Thanks for this. I bought your Domestika course and it taught me a lot and this a really good update. I’m so glad that the trend is moving toward more gentle retouching.
Wow you explained it way better than retouching academy free training. I'm new to dodge and burn and as a videographer I completely understand the highlight and shadow blending techniques after watching this tutorial. thank you very much. 🙏🏽
Thank you so much Kayleigh for putting your knowledge and making this great tutorial. I was looking for a simple and to the point explanation about this topic and I found you 🙏🏻 greetings from Colombia
Beautiful!!! the best way to retouch skin, i prefer this by far over frequency separation. I started retouching your technique after watching some of your older videos. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
I like this WITH frequency separation. Do the texture on the texture layer, keeping it preserved, and all of the color changes on the blur layer. The combo will produce a unique quality.
In this case you don't need to in my opinion as the model has a beautiful skin already and also the lighting is good, it would be pity to over do it, as the skin here looks 100% natural as it should look like anyways, in some different situation it would probably help the frequency separation.
I never comment, but here I had too! Thanks a lot for this very clear explanation. I watched a lot of different videos about dodge & burn and FINALY i get it! Thank you!
Kayleigh, this is a brilliantly simple dodge and burn technique. I’m going to move to this for my landscape work. I think it will be much more natural than HDR.
wow! this was great!!!!!!! thank you. I'm going to watch more of your videos. I would LOVE some tips for lighting shots on location. No studio, so how to set up 1 or 2 lights for a man's shot! Thank you!
Thank you so much for really helpful video 🥰💖 could you give some tips how to edit skin with a lot of acne and orange peel like skin pores, how to do it in non destructive way? Is there any way to recreate or create a new skin texture? 🤔 Thank you in advance, your content is amazing 🤍
Thank you for sharing your techniques. It's interesting and useful. Have you tried doing any of this in Capture One? There are dodging and burning tools there too. Do you find those to be less precise?
No worries Rick! Yes I have tried dodging and burning in Capture One too. It's another great alternative, but I think I just usually prefer Photoshop's interface and tools for this part of the retouching process. 🙂
So my approach would probably be: after D&B is done, mask the skin and add it into a group, add a Hue adjustment layer or (curve if you're getting pink skin), adjust the hue for the skin. use the brush tool, set the hardness to 0, any size you like, opacity 100, flow between o and 5, click the layer mask next to hue and sat, background to black and start painting over those areas or part of the body where the color shifted, when done cmd+ I to invert the layer mask. Be gentle with it. change the blending mode accordingly maybe something like lighten etc.. hope that helps.
No I prefer to do this at the end of the process as a finishing touch. Each to their own though, I just prefer this method as sometimes dodging and burning alone can remove some of that unwanted texture, whereas the clone stamp can appear a bit more destructive if used too much, so I always use that method very light handedly and as a final step. 🙂
@@haies09 It could potentially be an option depending on what you’re retouching! You could also use the standalone method of the clone stamp if it’s super basic skin work, (like for ecommerce imagery.) 😊
I don’t really think it’s necessary for dodge and burn, I personally prefer this method as I’ve found it gives me the most detail and control, but each to their own!
Wow, that’s a super long-winded way of setting up your dodge and burn layers. Do you not like the grey layer set to overlay and painting with b&w? That’s so much better way imho, since you don’t have to switch layers and it’s incredibly simple to press x to swap between b&w. Also, no mask is necessary.
It’s the way I’ve always set them up and it’s a really common method. I personally don’t like to paint with the grey layer as I don’t believe it offers enough control and I prefer to have the option of utilising masks. But I do think the grey layer can still be a useful method depending on what you’re retouching. Plus each to their own. 🙂
Hi Tomasz! Do you have the layer mask selected, (attached to the curves layers,) when you start to dodge and burn with the brush tool? When the healing tools are also used initially on a new blank layer, you have to ensure that the 'sample all layers' option is selected in the top toolbar. Hope that helps! :)
Thanks for this. I bought your Domestika course and it taught me a lot and this a really good update. I’m so glad that the trend is moving toward more gentle retouching.
No worries at all! I'm so glad you're finding the course helpful! 😊

Thanks Jim! I've tried this out with landscape work in the past and really liked how it turned out! Give it a go for sure 😊
Girl, you trying to have us at the computer all day? 😂
I'm so glad I found this channel.. so intuitive.. thanks alot
Hello, great video. May I ask you, how you decide how far you drag up or down the curve for either the dodge or burn layer. Many thanks

Amazing work, bravo!
Thank you ever so much you have a really great way of explaining things I did learn a lot about dodge and burn

Excellent. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much Kayleigh for the tips and another awesome tutorial! I learnt a lot! God bless you!
No worries and thanks for watching Nate! ☺️
Great tutorial, narrated at a pace that is easy to absorb - is there an erase brush to restore areas that maybe have been taken too far?
I wish you showed how did you work with eyes as well. Great video!
Thank you so much for making these - lol I did not know how to do this. You’re the best - again thanks
No problem! Thanks so much for watching 😊
This is great
So happy I found your channel, awesome content I really enjoyed this video. Perfect level of retouching IMO, you're fantastic!
Good work bro❤️
beautiful
Very Nice Video🥰
thank you for video!!))

what does transfer do in the brush options?
Brilliant

I would like to paste two images that have common portions. Is there a command to overlay common areas? Thank you.
Sometimes when you are dodging and burning, there is a slight color shift in those areas that you've d&b'd. Is there a "best" technique to fix that?
So my approach would probably be: after D&B is done, mask the skin and add it into a group, add a Hue adjustment layer or (curve if you're getting pink skin), adjust the hue for the skin. use the brush tool, set the hardness to 0, any size you like, opacity 100, flow between o and 5, click the layer mask next to hue and sat,

can i buy this raw? i have already bought your course on domestika
So is capture one separate thing to Photoshop ? and do I have to pay for it?
do you use a tablet or a mouse to retouch?
I use a tablet! :) Thanks for watching Perla!
which one is better for quality skin spot healing or healing brush ?
For quality, the healing brush usually works better as you have a bit more control with how it is applied to the image 🙂
Hey what camera did u use
Huge question!!! Have you used an iPad for any of these
No I haven't! 🙂
❤❤❤❤❤
Wouldn’t you do the clone softening before D&B?
No I prefer to do this at the end of the process as a finishing touch.
Each to their own though, I just prefer this method as sometimes dodging and burning alone can remove some of that unwanted texture, whereas the clone stamp can appear a bit more destructive if used too much, so I always use that method very light handedly and as a final step. 🙂
@@KayleighJune understandable, I was just thinking if it was before, then maybe the D&B process would be quicker 😊

Why don't you use mixer brush tool for dodge and burn? Why the normal brush?
I don’t really think it’s necessary for dodge and burn, I personally prefer this method as I’ve found it gives me the most detail and control, but each to their own!
Plzz image provide in description becoz all people pratice

There is also scripts that let you assign keyboard shortcuts, to switch between layers, so you don’t have to move your mouse to the layers palette 😊
mine says "your layer is empty" how can i fix that?
