    This is actually the first song I learned from Led Zeppelin. Still playing it at 63 yrs old. Thanks Mark.

    You are right about "What is and what should never be", it is a gem.. It is richly textured with a blend of jazz chords mixed with hard rock and slide blues licks..

      Yes, that slide solo is really beautiful as well. I love the whole song still today!

      Add to the above that Zep really knew how to use dynamics, as demonstrated here in the "soft" verse and "agressive" chorus. I can't think of any other hard rock band that perfected this like Led Zeppelin. And Robert Plant had the perfect voices for both.

    If i remember correctly that classic Page riff at the end would pan left and right in the speakers creating an even cooler sound effect

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  14 днів тому

      Yes, it pans left and right. I think Dazed and Confused does too at a couple of points.

    I love Zeppelin so much I've learned all of Jimmy's and of Joan Paul's stff and been playing for so long. Jimmy's the best. Led Zeppelin II is my favorate album I think for the bass and guitar stuff

    Long been one of my favorites, just a great guitar song with a lot of guitar things going on in it. Intriguing that they threw the album together in fits and starts while touring the first album.

    Well done Mark! What always struck me about this song was the whacky panning on the final guitar riff, coupled with the outrageous Gong. Truly original stuff.

    They say that Joe Walsh told Jimmy that he needed a '58 Les Paul besides his dragon Tele. Jimmy agreed, so Joe sold Jimmy one of his '58s. (Believe it or not.)

    Thanks Mark - your enthusiasm for Zeppelin, is rekindling my own love from my childhood for the band and, as a guitarist, especially Lord Page of the Riff. Such a great song rhythmically and musically that brings together intrinsically simple ingredients, like a great Italian chef, into a satisfying whole that somehow excites the musical taste buds. Magical :)

    Great lesson on this great classic. There's many reasons that I've said for many years "Jimmy Page" is the greatest guitar player of all time.
    Even though they stole 26 tunes. He does so many different tunings, and his technic's were miles above others of his day. I personally liked his original tunes better that the one's he stole. Like "10 Years Gone" "No Quarter" and many others. But IMO he owned everything he lifted. Many of his tunes are quite complicated too. You did an awesome job touching on these technics. Thanks Mark. Peace.. Joe

    • @MarkZabel

      Yes, it's probably because they aren't that well-known and popular. Plus, "All of My Love" is sort of uncharacteristic for Zeppelin and "Fool in the Rain" is freaking difficult! (Same for a couple off of Presence.)

      Oh man ... I don't know. It may be that the crowd was looking for Jim Croce and you pulled out "The Immigrant Song". Getting what the audience wants is the main thing to having a show that's enjoyed - with everyone singing along or dancing. Also, making sure YOU'RE having a good time up there.

    Hey Mark, in thoroughly enjoy your program but of uncovered something I never knew and I just like to share it with you about John Bonham. That there was a song that he simply refused to try to play at any concert because it took way too much concentration. Remember the song Dyer maker and John Bonham would not play that song in concert just thought I'd share that with you Mr Mark an interesting fact

    Interesting detail re: Whole Lotta Love riff, which is often missed. Page slightly bends the second note (D) on the fifth fret, simultaneously playing the open D string. Same notes, but with the slight bend, it creates a tiny bit of dissonance in the riff. Usually not transcribed that way. Can’t remember where I came across that but think it was an old guitar magazine interview with Page where he shared it.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  14 днів тому +1

      Yep, you'll see (and hear) that's what I'm doing in the video. I need to bend upward (toward the ceiling) to avoid blocking the open D string. That bit of dissonance is so cool!

    Quite by accident though.

      @@MarkZabel It was based on Killing Floor. From Wikipedia: “In December 1972, Arc Music, owner of the publishing rights to Howlin' Wolf's songs, sued Led Zeppelin for copyright infringement on "The Lemon Song". The parties settled out of court. Though the amount was not disclosed, Howlin' Wolf received a check for US$45,123 from Arc Music immediately following the suit, and subsequent releases included a co-songwriter credit for him.”
