I have to say, Mark, I've been enjoying your videos since your early days, and while they were always terrific, it's amazing to see the growth and progression in your playing, teaching, and overall production of your videos.
I love your insight into the simplicity of signature players . I have always tried to keep my style simple .Even primitive . Complicated pieces are sometimes just too hard for me . So I keep it simple .
Great short (yet nicely condensed) lesson on Dickie and utilizing the major scale (with the twist!) in lieu of the tried and true minor pentatonic, M.Z.! Brothers & Sisters sealed the deal for me, but I really started catching on with the Filmore and especially Eat a Peach. Amazing telltale strength and popularity of any band that sadly loses their esteemed leader (Duane to that horrific motorcycle accident) and not only doesn't miss a beat and even thrives for decades after! Jim C.
"Jessica" is the first time I asked, "Dang! Who are these guys?" When I heard it on the radio. LOL! I fell in love *BEFORE* I even heard "One Way Out"! Yeah, they're just the best. I like "Brothers and Sisters" a lot, but losing Duane ... it hurt for sure. He made everyone better.
Jessica and Blue Sky are my favorite Allman tunes. I'd heard their earlier work and really liked Eat a Peach. But it was the Brothers and Sisters album that really won me over because of Dickey's style of playing.
That double pick method he uses really give it a finger picking sound ! Its amazing ! Cant wait to experiment with it !!! Something I never noticed,,,TY Mark !!! I come here to get smarter and you never fail me brother !!! 😎✌️🎸💕🎶💕🎶
@MarkZabel Indeed Mark ! I have been at this for over 30yrs, I am finally retired and can now really get into it, it's great !!! Wish we had youtube when we started out hey ? 😎✌️🎸💕🎶💕🎶
Love the work that you do Mark, which I have only just discovered. I am a beginner guitarist and so I am reluctant to say that I believe that their is an error on2.29 of your video when you refer to the Major Pentatonic but the diagram shows the E Minor Pentatonic. I hope that this is helpful to you. If I have wasted your time, I apologise.
Thanks. Yes, I noticed it earlier and I'm editing a correction. Unfortunately, UA-cam doesn't allow editing (except in a very rudimentary way that wouldn't work here). Thanks for pointing it out. Here's the correction. ua-cam.com/video/nhDJ5tqhmIE/v-deo.html
Great job Mark. Being a Peachhead for more decades than I care to recall, your comment about Dickey and the fiddle is spot on. I read somewhere years back that a music producer heard Dickey’s playing and commented that Dickey’s father must have been a fiddle player. Dickey’s playing, for me, is so melodic, example of Blue Sky, the playing is uplifting in a sense. Hearing many players over the decades, I find that only a handful can really move me, Dickey can move me with one note. PS: listening to At the Fillmore East shows how fierce the ABB was at that time. Duane’s playing was sensational and on those nights, Dickey was truly on fire.🔥
Thanks, and that's great insight! Yes, I love the Fillmore East recordings and not just for Dickey and Duane. The Allman Brothers had so much drive in their music. As great as Duane and Dickey were, the band in total was so much more. They truly produced some amazing moments, both exciting and emotional. "One Way Out" is a great example of this. (I think it was on Eat a Peach, but recorded live at The Fillmore.) One of my favorite songs ever.
Not much to add other than this is a great lesson. Described perfectly for this eternal intermediate player. This will surely add a little wow, that sounds sweet to my playing. I know I'm enjoying it anyway and that's what really matters. Thank you much !!!! PEACE from Philadelphia
Thanks Mark. I studied Dickey's style for some time. I certainly have improved but never quite sound as good as him or you. Dickey has something special in his brain/finger connection. It is a sound worth striving for however. All the best.
No doubt all of us would benefit. I saw Tab Benoit recently - one of my absolute favorite players today. He described his own play as a Crayola box with only 4 crayons in it. "But they're BIG crayons" he explained! I dug that.
Great vid! Dickie is one of my favorites. You did it appears misplace the E major pentatonic on the first graphic. You show the minor form starting on 12th fret
I've always focused on Duane but ya, whenever Betts takes a solo it's a nice contrast. His style is very fluid and enjoyable - he's got plenty of great lines!
Have you thought of illustrating the harmonic lead parts of Elizabeth Reed? I see you have the ability to show two guitars at once. Just a thought, Mark!
Thanks. The download is available through a link in the video description. Here it is for your convenience. FREE Tab for this lesson here: tinyurl.com/MZFreeTabs
It can be whatever you like when improvising, but in his solo on Eat a Peach, he does not hit the D flat 7th even once. The scale he used is most often called E hexatonic, which does not include the flat 7, and so is by no means E myxolidian.@@johnlove7203
The pattern of picking that's used. If you listen to what I play there, you'll realize Dickey did it constantly. Many bluegrass players use it to imitate the fiddle.

Yes, I agree. Something about Duane elevated everyone in the band. My all-time favorite is (well, *today* in any case ... who knows what my mood will be tomorrow) is One Way Out from the Eat a Peach live recording. Dickey's solo on that is absolutely superb. And then the break where they trade 4's ... and then Duane's slide solo is just out of this world, not to mention Gregg's singing and the rest of the band's drive too. Amazing performance. But then, they had many such "amazing" performances. For me, they were the best.

I always loved those bright singing harmonies Dickie et al did on those songs! \m/
Dickey bets had the best melodic sensibilities of anybody in the last 50+ years. I’ll die on that hill

Over the E you can also noodle with the major 7th (D#), but just be sure to avoid it during the A chord.
Blue Sky is really E mixolydian, not E major. So Dickie uses D natural, the flat 7th, on the rare occasions he hits a 7th.
It can be whatever you like when improvising, but in his solo on Eat a Peach, he does not hit the D flat 7th even once. The scale he used is most often called E hexatonic, which does not include the flat 7, and so is by no means E myxolidian.@@johnlove7203
You nailed it on this one.

Any tips on how Dickie harmonized the 2 guitar part solos? I know they were not the same note on both guitars.
Absolutely! I did a video on it about a year ago. Here's the link. ua-cam.com/video/z5SLbyrgxVc/v-deo.html

You're welcome!
MARK, adding the A note to the major pentatonic scale is the 4th scale degree?
Yep. A is the 4th of E. Major pentatonic omits the 4th and 7th
Yes, the 4th.
Awesome
Great lesson. I'm not sure what you mean by "shuffle picking" in the last section. What characterizes shuffle picking? In that example?
The pattern of picking that's used. If you listen to what I play there, you'll realize Dickey did it constantly. Many bluegrass players use it to imitate the fiddle.
