Years ago, I had a break-in and a 30-30 was stolen and the police charged me for having a gun not locked in a safe. I told them that it had a trigger lock, and it didn't have to be in a safe. They argued with me that I was wrong that they had been properly trained by expert and they charged me. I contacted the chief firearms office in New Brunswick and told them that the police force in Ontario had charged me and that they were wrong. and he told me that I was correct. He had to contact the police force and explain them the law and only after this was done that my charge was withdrawn with no apology. YOU WOULD THINK THAT THE COPS SHOULD KNOW THE LAW!
You WERE wrong because you disagreed with the police. Ethics and even laws be damned. The police don't need to know the law although it really comes in handy. There are tons of them and they are all armed, even if you are also armed, there's only one of you.
Note that in some jurisdictions you are _required_ to answer certain questions under some circumstances and could be arrested if you don't. In NZ, for example, if you're driving or in custody then you're required to give the police your name, date of birth, and address if asked. And yes, the police are definitely not your friends.
the problem with the NDP is that once you don't own your own home and the government does - you get to own no firearms and if you disagree with anything they do then those "Greedy Grocery CEOs" likely will be barred from doing business with you just like how the Truckers had their bank accounts frozen. You see there is a very clear reason the NDP is anti-hunting and for controlling the food supply. It is to help you to conform to their planned reality for Canada which entails "attempted communism" the most deadly crime related to human rights because whenever it's attempted more people die than in war or under any other circumstances.
The police weren’t repeating questions for ensuring, they were trying to trick him into contradicting himself, or answering “wrong”. They were fishing.
A VERY old psychological technique used by the police. Actually as old as the hills themselves. It has evolved to a more sophisticated pattern of tricks over time.
Most principal s are leftist. They are only worried about covering their a$$and keeping their job. If it means throwing someone under the bus "oh well!
repeatedly answering _"I don't answer questions"_ for everything will almost certainly guarantee they'll come back for the charge of *no cooperating* lol because C-68 lets them search without knocking and without a warrant. lol its all written in there very plainly.
You're negating the idea that the person he talked to might have been an undercover cop/asset looking to score points (if their income depends on that, what do you think they might try because lol IT MIGHT WORK LOL PAY for those conviction tips) . If you talked to person X and the cops come knocking on your door... don't talk to that person ever again. The police in Canada have gotten a bad reputation for manufacturing crime.
Totally agree. Like you're following the law in Canada and we have a long tradition of hunting. Personally it's not for me and I don't think I'd really want them in my home if I had the choice but also if they're properly stored, who am I to tell you you can't hunt.
Some people have actual productive jobs and pursue their interests in their spare time. Other people have harmful jobs and they work full time. It's not surprising that propagandists get the advantage.
That's the attitude I have. I feel like we need to talk about this stuff without fear so that it's normalized. But yeah, you need to weigh that against the possibility of having your life literally ruined just because someone is a Karen.
A friend of mine was target shooting on his farm in Pennsylvania. A neighbor called the cops on him. The police told the neighbor “You realize that you both live on GUN CLUB ROAD, and you’re calling us about gunfire?” and did not even respond to the call.
This is the proper response. I used to get calls of a man in camouflage carrying a gun walking on the road. Usually during hunting season. I never looked into any of these calls.
@@TKN_Story Umm yeah… You do realize the OP was in the US where there is a constitution and bill of rights right? Nothing illegal about owning a rifle and camouflage in the US.. lol. Guys walking with firearms wearing camouflage isn’t out of the ordinary during hunting season.. lol Depending on the location you might see children as young as 6 wearing camouflage and carrying firearms out on a hunt with relatives.. lol. I understand this video is about something that happened in Canada.. But the comment you responded to is about the US.. If firearm ownership was truly a problem in the US it would be well known.. The US government can only guess to how many firearms are in the US because manufacturing your own firearms is legal in the US and has been since the US became a country.. Their estimates on factory made firearms alone, which is very low by the way makes the US citizens more armed than any military on the planet if you just count small arms.. US doesn’t have a firearm problem, it has a society problem and that was intentionally created and by design..
I would say the most likely scenario here is that... he was talking to a cop and he didn't know it. The cop or "RCMP informant/asset" gets compensated by giving them their rat leads. So getting a knock on the door just might have ended up in a significant "$ TIP $" for any convictions and opened them up to obtaining anything confiscated as that's written into the informant agreement - a certain percentage of assets recovered. Do you want a free gun? That's how it's done when you're an RCMP rat. Isn't the RCMP great at manufacturing crime? They've been known to manufacture crime before.
As a wildlife biologist in Kentucky, this is appalling. Kids go hunting in the morning and show up to school in their hunting clothes all the time here, and there have been exactly zero school shootings in these communities.
There are zero school shootings in almost every community. The U.S. statistics include gang violence as school shootings, which take place mostly in the same few cities, and the odds of a school being attacked in a given year by someone shooting indiscriminately in the U.S. are 1 in 130,000. In Canada there have been _five_ such shootings since 1975, making them so rare that it's hard to calculate the odds. If we go with the 21st century only, the odds are 1 in 345,000. If you include _all_ fatal school shootings in Canada since 2000, including universities, the odds are 1 in 38,000.
@@Bacteriophagebs If the shooting happens in a school, it doesn't matter if its a gang or a deranged person, it's a school shooting. But keep trying to spin the facts you turd.

I was behind an Edmonton Police officer at Cabelas and she wanted to buy a shotgun for her boyfriend, the guy behind the counter was trying to explain that she needed a PAL but she didnt seem to understand and kept showing her police id saying that they had issued her a gun and thats all she needed. I took out my PAL and showed it to her and said you need one of these if you want to buy a shotgun or rifle etc.
Not surprised at this lack of understanding of the requirements to purchase and own a gun by a law enforcement officer. When I took my training for the PAL our instructor mentioned that law enforcement officers do not have to take the training as they are granted the ability to carry and use with lethal force by their employer. They are trained on the laws of gun possession, but not on what is involved in acquiring one. It is very sad that this officer, although not required to have this knowledge, would still be this naive as to think they could go in to a gun shop and purchase as a civilian a firearm for someone else. It is quite ridiculous that we have become this controlled on firearms when the crimes committed by law abiding citizens do not reflect this need, and the appearance is our police forces are more focused on controlling the owners that register and follow the laws, and not the criminals. Such confusion here on a very simple issue.
Am no lawyer but am a retired cop and our days with how the politics are in this socialist country I tell you, never, never say nothing to cops, only thing that should come out of your mouth is, I have nothing to say, do you have a warrant? Do not open the door, do not let them inside at all.
we do not live in a socialist country. even our "labour" party doesn't believe in socialism. if you're going to complain about the government at least know what it is that you don't like about it. incredibly embarrassing coming from a retired cop but somehow, not surprising!
@addghvsdxvbhgdxcbbgdxvbvcddd Are you in the UK? This is a Canadian channel hosted by a Canadian lawyer, and this is a Canadian concern. We don't have a "Labour Party" here. We have a "Liberal Party." Sadly, they've become extremely socialist over the years. They now preach socialist values, use socialist manipulation tactics, and even invited a former SS officer to the HoC. The only things they lack are the designer uniforms (tho I suspect they may call Hugo Boss for that too) and Fearless Leader's mustache. He was spot on. Cheers.
I guess one question I have that seems to me to be a huge issue for 99% of regular folks is….where and how do I find a lawyer to call when the police are at your door asking questions!?!? WHO DO I CALL? HOW DO I FIND THE LAWYER IM SUPPOSED TO CALL!? Most people are not calling lawyers on a regular basis. I would honestly like to know.🤔
The public image of the RCMP is well deserved, that's why recruitment is down so badly. Canadians by and large don't respect them. Only people who've never been on the receiving end of the RCMP's perverted sense of justice have anything nice to say about them. Besides the obvious short coming of a federal police force, the RCMP is structurally dishonest, deceitful and has sponsored some pretty heinous things throughout its history.
I listen to the Nightime podcast and the whole series on the mass shooting-blew my mind. If I were you folks I would demand it to be dismantled. As a US citizen, I thought they functioned like the FBI-a federal investigation force for inter-provincial crime. Sadly, it’s VERY different. (Not saying the FBI has not and won’t have issues, it’s a large bureaucratic organization, but most of us are pretty happy with them, extremely well trained, intelligent folks.)✌️
@@justkiddin84 Rotten Carrots and Mashed Potatoes. That's what RCMP really stands for. @@justkiddin84 LOL no, the RCMP ARE the local police all over the country, aside from a few urban municipalities that have their own metro police. Some provinces have provincial police that are pretty much just traffic cops, otherwise it's just another division of the RCMP. There's no real oversight of the RCMP because they are the only police force on all levels and they investigate themselves, and any "civilian" oversight committees are stacked with retired RCMP looking out for their buddies. The Canadian Firearms Program is so much worse because, while they are technically a division of the RCMP, they are treated by the RCMP as being unrelated to them- the CFP have their own (made up) rules, internalized oversight structure, and also a different stack of archives as well (meaning they will keep and use any records or baseless accusations against you forever while the regular RCMP may be compelled to remove them). And who are Firearms Officers? They ARE NOT RCMP officers. Their only requirement is a highschool diploma and they have been woke enforcers for as long as I have ever dealt with them.
When he stated that his kid understood gun safety, the police are hearing "firearms trained" and probably flagging him as a higher threat. My understanding is that the police will take the negative aspect of anything you voluntarily offer up.

Only naive fools think they have nothing to hide. As Dzerzhinsky said, "Your clean record is not your achievement, it is us not doing our job well enough"
Everyone has something to hide. The problem is, some idiots think no lawful person does or should. If that was the case, then a "person with nothing to hide" would be willing to share their banking information, their SSN/SIN, ect. What is made worse is, saying something like that is seen as pedantry, which is a level of dismissiveness that gets you in to "I've got nothing to hide" autie mentality. A Right to Privacy means you have a right to your secrets, with the only caveat to that being safety and security of other people. Merely owning a firearm and talking about shooting does not fall under that caveat. Nor does a great many other things that fall outside of personal information.
I am a public school teacher in Canada and all my students know I love hunting and fishing. We need to normalize firearms and outdoor activities in Canada. Share your hobbies with people.

It is normal. If you read the other paragraphs of the law, you'll see that everything these people are complaining about applies only in areas where the regional and municipal BYLAWS don't allow hunting or shooting on your property. If you live in a rural setting, you can have an unlocked varmint gun handy under the control of a 12 year old as long as the ammunition is separated from the gun. In the wilderness, a 12 year old can have a loaded gun unlock and handy.
I went to a military high school. We were taken to a small military base with a 200 yard range every spring where we received instruction and fired M-1 Garands for record. I qualified with an M-1 in the 8th grade. We also had an indoor 50 foot smallbore range where we regularly shot .22 caliber target rifles. I hunted on weekends and vacations with my father. My friends and I talked about hunting and shooting all the time. I guess this anti-gun, anti-civil rights attitude in Canada has migrated from the UK; I doubt that it comes from the United States. This is a sad situation; a once free and reasonable country is now on the slippery slope of socialism. Imagine having to tell your children never to talk about firearms with your friends. Wow!

@@GamesFromSpace It's interesting to me that media in other countries hide so many murders in their own countries. The British, Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders are getting close to learning the same lessons the hard way. But they voted for it "democratically," so I guess the tyranny is perfectly moral since they voted for it.
I have concerns about what happened to this Canadian. However, Americans have a warped and twisted attitude towards guns which results in daily mass shootings and deaths of children, old folks, folks shopping, folks in church, folks at the movies, folks at a concert and on and on and on. I used to get a chill down my back when I heard about mass shooting in the US. Now I just shrug it off and put it down to a society in decline. I find it hard to comprehend how much things have changed in Canada during my lifetime. I remember in the 1970s going out hunting after school with firearms either left in vehicles in the school parking lot during the day, or taken into the school to be locked up in our lockers until school ends for the day. My High School even had a biathalon team who would have their Anschutz rifles in those same lockers for practice after school. Although my school didn’t have a range in the basement, the kids would use the range at our local armouries as the coach had an agreement with the Militia Commanding Officer. In fact, the Hunter Safety Course was taught after school in Mr Bailey’s science classroom. He was an avid hunter and trapper, and taught us how to skin a muskrat as part of a biology lesson. We never had anyone shooting up a classroom, and the expression “going postal” was unknown to us. Police are famous for twisting the words of suspects to get the almighty conviction. They aren't concerned about you or your innocence only getting a conviction. It's a sick system. Best to maintain silence when dealing with police. I learned this the hard way...
Thanks for this video Ian, it's one of the best videos. Having the actual person tell the story and you jump in with comments is a great learning experience.
How do you find lawyer resources? I mean in the heat of the moment, where to do you even look for these resources and know you have a credible number that will answer the phone?
Get firearm legal defence Canada insurance. They will provide you with a lawyer who specializes in firearms law and pay for any fees that may be incurred all for only $95 CAD per year. Definitely worth it!
Is insurance worth it though? Anyone have experience using them? Not against the idea but do they respond, are the costs really covered, are they any good... Could be throwing money away??
Any man with a brain can go to a hardware store and leave in a van capable of leveling a city block. Yet it never happens. Its almost like the person is the danger not the tool.
No you can't. I tried to buy a bit of tree stump remover many years ago, they refused the sale and then cops showed up and confiscated a variety of non-related personal effects such as my musical instruments, recording equipment, and a wide variety of expensive and effort-intensive hobby projects and equipment. Great video Ian ! Way way back in the 80s I went to a shooting range in Coquitlam with my father because he collected hand guns and felt I should know how to operate them if they were in the house ,but mainly I was never allowed to speak about those guns to friends ever or punishment would be fierce.
I lost any respect for the Canadian police when they first threw a plaster to the ground for holding church services and today for allowing a 50 year old man to claim he’s a 13 year old girl and shower with them
That was terrible; heartbreaking and shocking for the pastor and his family. Could this be Canada? I was recently disappointed in a matter where the police brushed off the fact that someone I had hired to walk my dog got into my bank account. I could get a lawyer but I do not have that kind of money. So criminals are getting away with it every day. Do we have to go back to the wild west days when people go around armed? If a store owner drew a gun it is likely they would be charged. People advise get a lawyer... impossibly expensive... legal aid is out of the question unless you are unemployed or really really poor. Law and order is weak even before Trudeau and imho it continues to slide so just blaming him is not the answer; thievery and crookedness is nothing new from what I heard from my parents; my grandfather was robbed by a live in couple who were hired to take care of him... cleaned him out and that was fifty years ago. How to deal; perhaps children should be schooled in reading writing and self defence.
My high school offered students in grades 9 through 12 the PAL/RPAL course through the Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education program (though only those old enough for a minors license and up could actually apply for a firearms license). Talking about hunting and bringing in game meat for lunch was common practice. Sharing hunting stories with teachers was also common. Nobody would have raised an eyebrow back then.😩
Hunting isn't just an "indigenous" cultural tradition. EVERYONE has hunting as part of their heritage whether they participate in it or not. The school is full of nutjobs as usual. Also, FFS I hat the whole "City folks don't know nuthin" schtick.
Thanks for doing this walk through Ian. I was watching this when it came out and thought it would be great if you could break it down. So much valuable information.
To the best of my knowledge there is no storage requirement for ammo. You could store it in a heap on the floor of your kitchen. That being said I lock all my ammo because the firearm storage regs is where they get you. You are allowed to store ammo in the same locked/opaque/not easy to open or break into container as the firearm, but if you have a firearm trigger locked and out in the open there cannot be ammo in proximity to it "readily available". My non restricted firearms are not always in the cabinet. They are locked with trigger locks when out, but in that situation if the ammo is locked they can't charge with unsafe storage. There have been cases where people have been charged for unsafe storage because there was a locked firearm in proximity to live ammo that was of a different caliber and could not be fired from said firearm, but it didn't matter. They charged that person anyway.
the reg actually reads it can be stored with firearm if locked, just not loaded into said firearm, no idea what the unsafe storage BS he is talking about refers to And there is no requirement to lock up ammo that I have ever heard of............. so unless someone can show a reg to the contrary that crate of 7.62x39 stays where it is.
@@TimPennell unsafe storage he is referring to is ammunition being readily available. A spam can of x39 is not exactly readily available as it takes time to open it. I use cheap combo luggage locks on 50cal cans. They can't say shit then.

Yet, the RCMP couldn't do anything in the case of Gabriel Wortman when a citizen TOLD THEM "I saw guns at his place" while it was known to them that he was not supposed to have guns. Fish. The smell of fish.

I don't have a Lawyer on speed dial. I don't even have a Lawyer that I know to call. How does the average law abiding Citizen "Call a Lawyer" when put in this situation.
I totally agree, I'm a 23 year veteran and always abide by so many levels of laws, and have never had need for a lawyer. I am open and honest to a fault out of my dedication to my country therefore the law. I am now seeing how nieve I am I am now seeing the corruption being weaponized against good people. I for one really enjoy what he has to say, if for no other reason than to compare and contrast the laws of Canada and the US and its state laws. I may never have a reason to visit Canada, but if I do I know that I am expected and required to obey Canadian laws irrespective of whether I personally agree with them or not, as I am in the US.
Although this took place in Canada, one MUST BE cognizant of the fact that American law enforcement, be they local, county, state, or Federal, are just as ANTI-gun as their Canadian counterparts. Always, remember, and take this fact to heart, NEVER, EVER co-operate with ANY member of law enforcement, they are NOT your 'friends', and any time that they contact/speak to you, they are on a "fishing expedition" in the hope of having you incriminate yourself for committing a crime. Law enforcement IS the single greatest threat to our Constitution, and the RIGHTS enshrined within, that we face in today's America.
Absolutely. It's our greatest threat and our most serious danger -- holding our lives in its hands with almost total immunity to punishment. It's largely corrupt, cannot police itself and as such fears an armed citizenry.
I got a feeling this isnt over for that guy. In my experience those cops wont just "let it go". He's smart just keep it the way it is nice and legal but those cops are gonna come back.
It's sucks use law abiding Canadians have to worry about this stuff. A family member went through the same thing with his son when you lived in a city.
PAL/R-PAL owners are vetted each and every day from the time the license is issued by a system called CPIC. Any interaction with police and mental health institutions, the information is going to be added to the CPIC system.

They knew the law. They just wanted to lay charges. It's what they do. Makes them feel like big men. For most of them it's a power trip.
"YOU WOULD THINK THAT THE COPS SHOULD KNOW THE LAW!"
You would think that... but many decades of living life has proven that assumption to be false.
Law Abiding gun owners/citizens are the problem duh, and hunting rifles are being used in drive by shootings by criminal and gangs.
You WERE wrong because you disagreed with the police. Ethics and even laws be damned.
The police don't need to know the law although it really comes in handy. There are tons of them and they are all armed, even if you are also armed, there's only one of you.
this is done on purpose, they don't tell me the actual law so that it easier to F people
Never ever talk to a cop, or let them in your door. You have the right not to answer questions. The cops are not your friends.
Note that in some jurisdictions you are _required_ to answer certain questions under some circumstances and could be arrested if you don't. In NZ, for example, if you're driving or in custody then you're required to give the police your name, date of birth, and address if asked. And yes, the police are definitely not your friends.
Not necessarily your enemy, but not your friends. Even if you are a cop.
You have a right to ignore knocking at the door, doorbells, and phones. That's a great way to prevent questions!
the problem with the NDP is that once you don't own your own home and the government does - you get to own no firearms and if you disagree with anything they do then those "Greedy Grocery CEOs" likely will be barred from doing business with you just like how the Truckers had their bank accounts frozen. You see there is a very clear reason the NDP is anti-hunting and for controlling the food supply. It is to help you to conform to their planned reality for Canada which entails "attempted communism" the most deadly crime related to human rights because whenever it's attempted more people die than in war or under any other circumstances.
They certainly aren't stopping by to see how you're doing and have a cup of coffee...
The police weren’t repeating questions for ensuring, they were trying to trick him into contradicting himself, or answering “wrong”. They were fishing.
About the second time the cops asked where the guns were, I would have asked, "Do you have a license for this fishing expedition?"
Or just "he's behaving nervously" to allow for the patented super cop sense.
The cops were fishing, fishing ithout a license.
A VERY old psychological technique used by the police. Actually as old as the hills themselves.
It has evolved to a more sophisticated pattern of tricks over time.
Exactly!

There is no right to intimidate or threaten, and the mere act of owning a gun is a threat to those around the owner.
@wmdkitty by that logic, the mere presence of knives in the kitchen are a "threat" to everyone in the house.
What a stupid take.
Canadian gun owners being totally silent is how anti gun rhetoric works. Staying silent for decades has been quite detrimental.

Of course not. The kids are armed. ;-)

That's incredible.

They ( firearms) were completely normal in the 60s, and even into the 70s. Then the world turned into a bunch of pussies , children had to be bussed two blocks to school, everyone needs a support animal, anything that went wrong has to be someone else's fault, and on and on....
We use to talk hunting and guns in high school but today Karens and Kens have destroyed the world.
Wow!
@@charlesnash2748 The Russians have had military classes one day per week in highschool where students are trained with AKs and grenades on a range, kind of like cadets. @@GamesFromSpace It's interesting to me that media in other countries hide so many murders in their own countries. Britains NABIS and Australia's ABS have stats clearly showing what happened when their governments stole guns from legal gun owners and then proceeded to ban any meaningful defense. Of course, the Soviets, Cambodians, Cubans, European Jews, Mexicans, Venezuelans, and plenty of others learned the really hard way what happens when only the criminals and government have guns.
In just a few decades, we have the RCMP being called out to shake down a law abiding citizen because he wished to pass on his hunting skills to his children, and thereby teaching them how to be self-sufficient adults. It’s sad to see our country today. Catching bad guys is hard, but harassing the law abiding is easier. If you look hard enough, you’ll find something overlooked that you can charge him with and keep your arrest statistics up. Good Cop…here’s your doughnut. I know there are decent cops out there, we have many of them who shoot recreationally at our range however they are overshadowed by the over-zealous and crooked ones.
When I was a kid in the 50s we had three types of guns in the house.
1. Toy guns that we played soldier with.
2. BB guns that we did target practice with.
3. The 22 rifles in the closet that we did not touch.

The term "Readily accessible" was thrown out of Ontario Supreme court in the Ian Thompson case as there is no legal definition of "readily accessible". Is there an actual amount of time it should take the owner of a firearm to access these firearms? If you want to clean a shotgun, should it take you an hour to take it out of the safe? What is the legal definition of "readily accessible".
I’d guess it can be accessible enough for the owner to grab it, but not another person or a child.

I am not sure when "ammo storage" came under the Firearms act. It used to be "not stored with a firearm" Clay
They charged that person anyway.
the reg actually reads it can be stored with firearm if locked, just not loaded into said firearm, no idea what the unsafe storage BS he is talking about refers to
And there is no requirement to lock up ammo that I have ever heard of............. so unless someone can show a reg to the contrary that crate of 7.62x39 stays where it is.

In my experience you are right on. Especially publicizing this is going to irritate someone.
Saw the original, glad you covered it.
It's sucks use law abiding Canadians have to worry about this stuff. A family member went through the same thing with his son when you lived in a city.
If you're a firearm owner in Canada, aren't you basically being monitored 24 days for any red flag incidents, regardless how minor?
Restricted license yes
we're more watched then a serial child grapist, because we're scary!
@@darrenpaches3731 Pretty sure it's any class of PAL.
We are monitored in any number of ways whether we have a firearms licence or not. You know about the truckers protest, right?
PAL/R-PAL owners are vetted each and every day from the time the license is issued by a system called CPIC. Any interaction with police and mental health institutions, the information is going to be added to the CPIC system.
I have nothing to hide AND NOTHING to share.
Completely rediculous to have to tell your child not to mention guns at school so as to not face a warrant less search this should be a lawsuit against the school
Solid review Ian. I saw the beard gentleman's video yesterday and was hoping you'd comment. Thanks for your insight.
“It’s for you own good”
We’re from the government and here to help ….. lol 😂
A Karen from the neighborhood could call in a "welfare check". Be careful, never talk to police.
