    Brings a tear to the eyes, listening to this, being reminded of long ago times and those who are no longer with us.

    Like everyone else here, the memories of being a kid in the 60's awaiting mum's Sunday dinner with this on the radio, came flooding back. The sound of all those - what seemed to me then - 'exotic' locations beyond our shores. 'SAC Bloggs' at RAF Brüggen, BFPO 42, little did I know then that a few short years in the future I would be at RAF Brüggen BFPO 42 myself.

    Part of my childhood. Listening to this on a Sunday at noon with Jean Metcalfe in London and Bill Crozier in Germany followed by the Navy Lark or the Clitheroe Kid. Great to hear this clip.

    The more of this I listen to of this, the more the tears well up in my eyes. I had a favourite uncle and aunt who were based in Singapore, and it was wonderful to hear a message and request on the programme.

    When my mum died recently, I found myself thinking of all the happy memories of my parents (dad died 10 years ago), many of them from when I was growing up in the 1960's and 70's. One such memory was of travelling from Kent into London to visit the grandparents for Sunday lunch and listening to Two Way Family Favourites on the car radio on the way. Hearing the theme tune brings it all flooding back. Happy days! Thanks for the upload.

    This brings back so many memories, wish they could repeat this programme. Didn't realise what we had at the time.

    Wasn't it wonderful to be sat in the kitchen listening to this with the smell of Sunday lunch wafting through !!!........I don't care if I am accused of "rose tinted glasses" syndrome.....it was better then, believe me !!!

      Totally agree. How this programme brings back memories of roast beef and jam tart with custard, walls dripping with condensation. Somehow a feeling of contentment. Of course we were young and carefree back then. But life got in the way and Sundays changed. Now in our early 60's and retired it seems too much bother to do the full roast at home so go to the local and eat there. No buying, cooking or washing up but not the same. Yes, it was certainly better then.

      You don't see neighbours tinkering their motor bikes and cars either on a Sunday..........Cars now are that full of electronics you have to take them to a garage....everything is a rip off......People used to get their wages weekly and could budget, then they brought out monthly wages so people thought they were rich when they got paid, and ran out of money half way through. A perfect time for the introduction of the credit card to use till next month.. all cleverly designed to put everyone in debt........I have just seen a survey showing that the Brits are the worst sleepers in the WORLD......Worry about debt and the designer trainers for their spoilt kids....The only designer item I had was a snake belt !!!........Nowadays everybody has everything, but nothing at the same time......So very sad that we have allowed the liberal lefties to ruin this once great country............

      And "Educating Archie" (radio ventriloquism!), with the inimitable Beryl Reid as Monica and Brummie, Marlene: "I've got a new boyfriend. He sends me." Hancock, Round the Horne, The Goon Show, The Navy Lark (early Ronnie Barker!), The Clitheroe Kid (not all Sunday lunchtime, of course). Look them all up on Turnipnet for some nostalgic fun!

      Kevin Heming, I absolutely agree with you and Robert Parkes, they were indeed better times. Not about rose tinted spectacles, they really were good times. I'm a child of the 1970's, everything brand new to me, everything to look forward to. Great films like Grease, King Kong remake (1976) TV was far better then than it it is now, 321 and Tom Baker as Doctor Who, The Incredible Hulk. Music was much better, Slade, Elvis, Bowie, Gilbert O Sullivan. Great Summer of 76. My father and my grandparents were still very much alive, now they're gone, just like the good times, I'm nearly 50. The music is terrible now, all about drugs and rape or rave and Bomp Bomp Bomp. TV and films have more gratuitous violence and swearing and sex. Never mind, I still got my mother, and a family of my own, and tunes just like this to take me back in my mind when I close my eyes, I see my family and a time when I was safe. The music of the 60's, 70's and 80's invoke the times of when I was growing up in South Wales, I know live in Dorset as my former home town has declined and not as vibrant as it once was back then. No, it's not rose tinted glasses, it really was better then.

      Listening to to this reminds me of when my wife and I were newly weds in the late fifties. We'd go for a long walk before settling down in our, sparsely furnished living room, my wife knitting, me reading the paper, and listen to 'down our way', 'sing something simple', 'Melody hour' , 'Life with the Lyons'... Happy times; we didn't have much, but we were strangely content with life.

    • @leswestley6581
      @leswestley6581 6 років тому

      Yes :) The past generations complain about the present and sigh over the past, but when you look at what is going on these days, we 'oldies' didn't get it too wrong. I would love to go back to the 50s where there was a greater amount of innocence and satisfaction - relatively speaking of course. Mum and dad had the light programme on all day and from that I gained a big appreciation of current and past music, especially the Big Bands.

      Got quite emotional when I listened to this.It took me straight back to when I was young on a Sunday with my Mum and Dad and brother.Eveything was better then .What have we got to look forward to these days ?

    • @leswestley6581
      @leswestley6581 6 років тому

      'What have we got to look forward to these days'. I used to say that in my mid 20s when I saw how things were changing and not necessarily for the best. One day a workmate introduced me to Jesus. I gave my life to Him and 50 yrs on, I know what there is to look forward to ---- being with Him when my time here is finished. I have never regretted my decision to Follow Him. If you feel there is no future Lesley, turn to Jesus. You will see the world in a totally different way. God bless you.

    Yes, Robert, all sitting at the table for Sunday lunch and listening to this wonderful programme. I remember it like it was yesterday. Unfortunately, nowadays we aren't encouraged to celebrate special occasions for the honourable members of our armed forces.

    Family Favourites was the only time my mother would put the radiogram on during the week. She always used to get all the housework done in time for 11.55am, so she could get the valves warmed up and tuned in to 1500 metres long wave in time for the first burst of With A Song In My Heart followed by either Sandi Jones or Jean Challis. We would never listen to Jimmy Savile's Old Record Club on 247 metres (R1).

    This and all of the programmes (until the 1980's) had memorable theme tunes, most of which far outlived the shows themselves.

    It's already been said on here but we were sat in the kitchen while Mum cooked the Sunday dinner and Dad was down at the pub a Sunday lunchtime tradition in our house and always remember a female presenter which I presume was Judith Chalmers, the Sun always shone in those days.
    Bill Crozier became a presenter here in Sheffield in the mid 70s

    The theme tune was re-recorded in the 1960s with a different arrangement but, as Ed Stewart said, it wasn't the same as the Andre Kostelanetz version. Not the same at all.

    • @RandomRadioJottings
      @RandomRadioJottings  Місяць тому

      As far as I know the 60s version was arranged by Brian Fahey. A different version was used in the 70s credited to Norman Candler (real name Gerhard Narholz)

    People who swear in public places, should be punished by receiving an on the spot fine of £60 and if not paid within a reasonable time, they should be arrested and appear in court, to explain why their fine had not been paid and to further explain why they are antisocial.
