Here is a much-improved, more complete and comprehensive Meruem analysis: ua-cam.com/video/moXTmhpbb1k/v-deo.html It doesn't speak as much about the emotional side, but it is a much more significant and all-encompassing thematic/character analysis than this video.
Johnathan russell Gon at that point may have been on the same level of the king but I don't think he could beat him i still think that no one could which makes his turn to "good" all more surprising
Great character study. One important thing to note is that Meruem only *seemingly* reverts back to his old self when he comes to the (at this point) strange conclusion that might makes right and that he will kill Komugi. Imho, he actually *doesn't* revert back to his old self, but rather *lies to himself* because he isn't ready yet to openly admit that his own self-identity has changed. Being able to re-adjust one's own self-identity by re-evaluating ones's own ideals, goals and place in the world is arguably a sign of "true adulthood" and/or wisdom, and Meruem is more like an angsty, insecure teenager at this point in time.
Yep,, agreed. It wasn't a true reversion, just a temporary relapse during which his newfound humanity (maturity, by your analogy) was trying to come out.
After finishing the Chimera Ant arc, I can safely say that Meruem, in my opinion, was THE protagonist of the arc. It's a real shame he died of poisoning. And his death, with Komugi by his side, was just *weeps and sniffles* too much. It broke me when I first watched it. The effects still linger when I ponder it.
Holy shit, I didn't realize that the eagle attacked Komugi because he was in a panicked state after feeling Meruem's aura ! Even after watching it, this show never fails to surprise/amaze me with its attention to details ! Oh and by the way your analysis is spot on ! Good job here, you have yourself another sub :)
You know what's REALLY amazing about his change? That little moment where Meruem kneels down in front of Palm. The King himself, the strongest character in the series, the supreme violent ant bows down in front of someone a lot weaker than him, begging to tell Komugi's whereabouts. What a pure heart he had at his final moments, this is indeed one of the most humane things he's ever done
The thing about bleach though is that they showed us characters past. So we understood their character development. Look at kenpachi from a kid to now. Yamamoto from his old days. Aizen from his downfall.
I must say that your review of Meruem is beautifully structured. I really love how you point out the key details of his life. Meruem reminds me of Ulquiorra during the later parts of Bleach, too bad that all good villans that actually learn their lesson seem to get killed way too fast. Anyway, I can barely wait for part II of this character review. Keep up the good work man!
Thanks very much my friend. I felt like that was the best way to tackle this analysis - he develops very slowly and gradually over time, so chronological felt like the way to go. Part 2 should be up within a couple of days! :)
I think that an underlying motif of Meruem is that his design goes from his cold, robotic/animalistic feel to a more humane air while still being intimidating. Its subtle in the way that his eyes become rounder and more expressive to the point that the earlier Meruem is jarring to me. Its that good of a development.
EXCELLENT AMAZING VIDEO SIR! If I may add on to what you said, I think another thing that's important to mention about the greatest character of all time is that in universe he's the smartest being to exist (that we know of or at least had the fastest growing intelligence). This fact is key because even through he just followed instinct and naive to the world at the beginning he had an extremely clear and concise understanding of that instinct (his nature) to the point that when he would berate someone he would often do it at the *philosophical* lv as well. (One of my favorite quotes from him came from this early period "in the hands of an incompetent power brings nothing but ruin") This is really important both thematically and narratively. It's important because a living being needs a grasp on what it means to have a place in the world (a philosophical concept that requires a lot intelligence to even fathom much less question) before they could question it. For example an animal doesn't question it's life purpose but just lives and tries to reproduce. The fact that meruem had such a clear concept of himself and his role at the beginning not only makes his eventual change that much more interesting and rich (and some other of the ants as well) but it also is a early sign of just how much humanity he has from the very beginning despite his lack of conventional compassion. He doesn't just rule cause he believes he wants to rule but that he has a *Right* too, a concept normal animals don't have, showing an inseparable linkage between the ants and humanity. Basically that was a long-winded way to say that in just looking at meruem from a character standpoint, even though he comes off 1D at the beginning he's always reinforcing the theme's of the arc :D
Great point to add on there, my friend. Despite his lack of understanding in some aspects, his sense of self and purpose was super important to integrating with the arc as a whole. Thanks for bringing that up!

Meruem, easily my second favourite character right behind Hisoka. Such a fantastic character and such an arc it utterly blew my mind and this is a fantastic video~ Being made entirely from humans but being a chimera ant and having to combat these two polar points was insanely great to watch and utterly enthralling, the more you think about it the arc couldn't really end with Meruem doing anything else besides dying. He couldn't exist soundly by being a sound minded physical God who is entirely human in the body of a chimera ant Also Meruems early line about humans and cattle still sticks with me even now~

That compliment means a lot to me, thanks very much. I've had more people compliment my voice (through these videos and in real life) in the past 2-3 months than I have had before then in my life. It's very nice to hear. As for doing it as a profession - well, I'd need quite a few more subscribers before I can even think about that, unfortunately. As for now, I'm sure UA-cam works just fine as a passion rather than a profession. :)
remember when you watched the original anime and saw the ending of the last episode where gon sees kite [we only know him as the guy who hinted at gon to become a hunter at this point] and we would all think he was gons father. at least thats what happened to me :P

Mugen Ittoryu Thanks! And for sure, I will definitely do one for him.
It is 2021 at Chimera Ant arc is still the peak of HxH
I think meruem is my favorite character in all of media
You, sir, have a very nice voice. I cannot stop listening to your videos in the background when I do work. You should really think about doing such videos as a profession. We need more of your voice :)
I have never cried so hard like meruems final moments
Cole McGrath Clannad AS?
Meruem is a beautiful character
yo thx for this amazing video i loved it
Thanks for watching :)
Loved this and your berserk video!! Subscribed !!!
Thanks very much!
Am I the only one attracted to Meruem? Yes?....ok.......
Yup
No
In the manga he has quite the bulge, censored in the anime.
Alezandxr you have made another good video.
Yeah Meruem is so well done
Okay video. Runs the risk of just retelling the story but you avoid that pitfall by adding your insight here and there.
I love Meruem's character in this arc
remember when you watched the original anime and saw the ending of the last episode where gon sees kite [we only know him as the guy who hinted at gon to become a hunter at this point] and we would all think he was gons father.
at least thats what happened to me :P
CC translates "Meruem" as "Marijuana" LOL
I think the lesson he learned was "Sure, I could kill this girl. So could a billion other people or animals. How does killing her or anyone else make me special?"
It's been a while since I have heard Protecting my Devotion. I am surprised it's for meruem.
Omg thank you so much. I've been waiting for this. You are even doing a 2 parter. You the man 😆 btw love the way you did the episode. It was kind of like a biography.
Awesome, glad that this is something you've been waiting for. Thanks! I felt like a biography-ish style would work best for this since he goes though so much subtle development over time.
Keep up the good work. What a very extravagant way of showing your understanding of this amazing character. You definitely earned a sub and new viewer. I look forward to all your future endeavors
Thank you, glad you enjoyed.
I just finished this arc & Nah he not popular enough. Barely anyone talks about him.
Thanks to your videos I love HXH even more, thanks mate and keep it up
Cheers pal. :)
