Meruem is the most REVOLUTIONARY villain in anime

- Today I explain why I believe Meruem to be the most revolutionary villain in anime. Togashi again succeeds in breaking the mold of what it means to write an antagonist.

Meruem made me feel genuine affection towards a character in a way that even few protagonists have. Truly transcendental type of writing had to be done to make him. Kudos to Togashi.
Absolutely
@@truenahr excellent video man, if you keep making content this good youll be guaranteed to blow up 💪
Appreciate the love brother
Togashi is a god of writing
Meruem doesn't feel like a vlliain togashi make complex and amazing character
This arc was pure genius. The contrast of the purest character of the series in Gon slowly devolving into something of a monster and the most monstrous character the series had in Meruem becoming human was brilliant to watch.
Idk why people keep saying this. Gon expresses human emotion as well. Revenge is a characteristic shown by humans all the time. People will make sacrifices to their health to avenge loss 😂 Meruem was still going to be a dictator and take over the damn world
@@pandabear1576 no one said Gon wasn't human the point is that Gon stripped himself of all logic and feelings other than anger making him more of a moster who is acting on instincts rather than logic
While Meruem was opposed he was stripping himself from his monster side for logic and feelings making him more of Human
This is the contrast between those two characters
@@Granglife all meruem became was slightly less cruel. He was still going to take over the world and through coexistence was still going to select and control human based on their quality. Gon doesn’t become like a a monster at all is my point. He’s just an angry child who is dealing with trauma. There is no contrast. Meruem is still an asshole while Gon was just a little kid throwing a tantrum.
@@pandabear1576 ignoring every point 🤦🏾
And I saw you in under every comment just hating on this series
What is your deal with HxH really 🤔
@@Granglife I love HxH and even read it today. You’re misunderstanding my viewpoint. Constantly there is this split between fans of Gon becoming an animal and Meruem becoming a human and that’s not true! Gon displays the same human emotions that come from seeing someone you know be murdered. Those emotions are hatred and killing intent. Meruem wanting to understand but at the same time still kill Netero for the assault on his plans and harm to his only friend doesn’t make him a human. Neither does his understanding of human potential for growth. The one thing I agree with is his understanding of the fact he can/will die and be beaten by humanity’s potential. That tied to his friendly love for Komugi doesn’t make him human though imo
I was always amazed how Meruem became the more human character in this arc.
I adore him. I always have.
He was able to learn not only from his surroundings but also from his mistakes, he could admit his errors and misconceptions and own weaknesses and learn from them and also do something about it. The way he changed from self-centered to fully empathic and understanding of his and others circumstances and values...
Jesus Christ what a character.
Remember when I first saw him all I thought of him was as a cheap Cell knockoff, but damn did that change quickly, went from hating the character to one of the all time favorites.
Ultimately why he died.
Ego is only an emotional hurdle. Taming it ideal to attain evolution of character and mind (being able to switch from one state of mind to the next, in order to effectively adapt and match the present situation).
@@Human_01 Ego is not always a net negative and shouldn't be looked down on upon when there's actions to back it up.
@@Human_01ego is simply one’s view of oneself. the more in line with the truth, the healthier the ego.

One of the main themes I picked up from the Chimera Ant Arc and the main things I got from the characters of Komugi and Meruem is that humanity is non-fungible. Once you become "human", there's never really anything that could ever take that away from you. Meruem is an all mighty king, still the most powerful character we've seen in the series, but he is the result of all of the humans that the Ant Queen ate and he'll never be able discard that aspect of him. Komugi meanwhile is a prime example of someone who would be called a subhuman by certain fascist and/or eugenicist ideologies, being poor, physically disabled and possibly neurodivergent. Despite all of this... she's still human and has the right to stand as an equal to Meruem in certain contexts as well as the right to be loved and no one can ever take that away from her. This dynamic between the two really is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read in a manga. The Chimera Ant arc really feels as much of a condemnation of humans and our society as it feels like a celebration of it. It takes a really mature writer to handle all of this as well as Togashi did.
Well put. So many writers just do the "humans are the true monsters" conclusion and leave it at that. Togashi is like "humans are monster alright, but they are also noble, kind and wise". He really explores this duality with Its nuances and contradictions, he was very thoughtful about it. No wonder it took him 8 years to complete it
I cried for meruem in the end.
I dont watch a ton of anime but it was the first one to ever bring me to tears.
Same. I was crying when he asked komugi to hold his hands while he sleep. And then he never wakes up. 🥺
@@vikramjha1794 🥺🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Listening to this makes me cry again.
I think we all did
this is the only villain that truly made me cry 1st when he bowed down and 2nd is when he found komugi and spend their last moments together
I always thought of Meruem's and Komugi's relationship as a platonic love story rather than a romantic one. I also really love how they never really express their feelings or emotions towards each other but they both have an idea of what they mean to each other. My favorite moment of that was when Meruem was explaining that he is toxic and being with him would mean death, but Komugi smiles and continues playing.
It was beautiful. The two could feel the change they had made within each other. She chose to stay by his side and enjoy one last game with the person who gave her the most challenge. The one she had found a true friend in. It was one of the most beautiful scenes. Meruem's change and acceptance of his fate was just incredible writing.
@@LuciferArc1 it’s a friendship built on a lie though. She doesn’t know she’s speaking to an ant due to her blindness hence her reaction to Killua picking her up.
@@pandabear1576 not really the king didn't need to explains who he was to Kumugi and Kumugi didn't care since he was the kindest person she ever met to her
Their relationship isn't about race it's about what they ment to each other
@@Granglife and he only means something to her because she doesn’t know he’s a murdering ant bro lol.
@@pandabear1576 I'm sure she knows as far as him Being a killer they literally dragged her out probably killing who ever stood in their way and don't forget how many times he told her he will kill her before literally ripping his own arm of in front of her
And she still loved him what makes you think she won't except him as an ant when she already didn't care about all those stuff 🤦🏾

As someone that doesn’t really watch anime but has seen a lot of film, Mereum is the best fictional character I have come across. I can’t think of any character that even comes close.
I’m in the same boat as you
Also, Meruem means "the light that illuminates everything", this reminded him of Komugi and this is why he was afraid to die.
He was afraid to die because death meant "lost potential". Komugi represented only one aspect/component of the potential experiences he could have had and lived through. He was born only a few days, he was hardly in his prime... which is extremely frustrating.
Meruem is truly inspiring, to have that humility and love in the face of death. Thats a true king!
Wow.
Meruem is such a great, great character. One of the only villains in all of media I truly respect and root for. I actually came close to crying at the end. Seeing him become human was amazing to watch.
The parallels between Gon and Meruem are honestly great, and it made sense why they never met.
Gon is a pure being, one that was born wholly good and kind. But as he grew in this arc, he became filled with malice and revenge. His interactions with the ants made him lose control and give up all the kindness in his heart
Meruem was born as a natural force of evil and arrogance. But through each of his losses he became more capable of understand and respect beings other than himself. His interactions with humans gave him a purpose and meaning
everytime komugi and meruem talked you can see its like an adult trying to understand a child, but in their last conversation this dynamic flipped, meruem calling for komugi again and again just like a child reassuring his parent is there when hes about to fall asleep
As strange as it sounds, though he doesn't cave into his expectations the Chimera Ants have for him as king, the self reflection of what it means to be a king might've made him more worthy as a result. Though originally he only strived for power as he lived longer he developed ideals and genuine care for people which are also ideal traits for a leader. Even in his death he wished not to die as a ruler but to die living his last moments in peace.
In a way, he became a better leader because he gained the humility to accept his own faults and the empathy to truly care for his subordinates, rather than rule by fear he was on the path to rule with trust and genuine love. If the Hunter Association didn't interfere with Meruem I wonder how he would've developed? Maybe he'd ask Colt later on in his life about his name in his journey of self discovery.
Edit: Basically the whole thing about people who want power typically don't deserve it while people who don't want power pftem are the best leaders, while Mureum was powerful in his journey of self discovery he became a better leader.
If I edit again probably just grammar edit's, but if I have more ideas I'll put edit *insert corresponding number*.
I don't think meruem is a villain. It was just nature being crazy. People forget that humans are the main species of this planet. We're on top of the food chain. The chimera ants were strong and intelligent enough to challenge our place and that doesn't make them villains. They are just a whole other species that see humans as food.
This arc shows you how there isn’t truly a hero in this show. Man can be good or bad, because that just apart of being human. Netero committed an evil deed for the sake of humanity(just like Gon) and Meruem’s newfound emotions made him want to change humanity.
Netero did not commit an evil deed. He killed a superhuman ant that commit a genocide against an entire country. Gon seeking revenge at the sake of his lifespan and energy isn’t evil either. They’re both forces of good and Meruem was evil regardless of if he began to understand things about life lol. What are y’all even saying in this comment section?
@@pandabear1576 you seem very small minded if thats all you took from this arc🤦🏾♂️
@@quanpcpcquan4077 netero blowing up mereum wasn't evil. Him creating the hunter exam to kill off thousands he deemed as unworthy sure evil immortal. Gon was consumed by hatred and was shattered as a child who couldn't comprehend the cruelty of real life. I don't think him killing pitou was completely evil in that moment if he didn't sacrifice his nen pitou would of killed him. Not to say Gon was acting moral either. My personal opinion by the end mereum wasn't evil however he still posed to much of a threat to humanity despite his change of heart that doesn't change him killing children and playing god. At the end he decided he'd allow few to live he deemed worthy like he was telling netero sound familiar it's literally netero same philosophy.
@@ChimpRevolution what would be your reasoning for saying Gon wasn’t acting morally in killing Pitou? Also, given the criteria you use Meruem has to still be evil. Finally, did Netero create the exam? I don’t recall this being stated
Meruem makes me cry. I love him so much.
Oh??? ... Alright.
I never knew why i felt so touched when Meruem died. Imo he was the purest caracter ever. AS ge was only himself and TRULY only himself.
That last game they played slapped so hard.
I have never yearned so much for the death of a character other than Meruem and later when he actually died, I cried for him and felt it to be unfair, yet satisfying and fulfilling.
thats how great this story got me.
This video impressed me on so many levels. Flawless analysis that actually made me realize why this arc was so emotional for me beyond the obvious surface level stuff.
Your analysis is so clear and concise and still feels nuanced and fresh at the same time. As someone who's watched HxH many times, and as an enjoyer of video essays like this from time to time to hear how others break down parts of this franchise that I love so much; this was so good. I liked Meruem before, but this made me both appreciate the details that I have missed in the past and honor and respect Togashi-san that much more for his character writing prowess. Instant sub.

Meruem was the unexpected story arc which became my favorite. I feel exactly as you said in the video. Thank you. Maybe do one on Reiner some time in the future? I feel he too has an interesting arc. From a side character to an antagonist to a protagonist. Would love your thoughts on this.

It's the norm, lol (for the time being).
Vengeance will be terrifying, but it will be executed fairly and justly. The West can hide all the blight that consists their culture, and train of thought, as well as their influence upon other cultures (but excuses can only protect one for so long, this applies to Japan, and relative apathy and covert, racist attitude/white-worshipping ways).
Pretty shameful Japan; and that Camilla [7DS] neglect is all noticeable. I wonder, what is Japan without the US army for support??? Just a small Island with an ego complex. Despite its excellent anime and videogaming industry and history [gaming track record], Japan is still surprisingly backwards. Japan's gaming and anime industry, the former is ideal with AI/VR technology, they will be basis/foundation for mech-like technology, albeit it droned. Skells, as depicted in the xenoblade chronicles X series is feasible... Mechs, skells, and handheld tactical nukes, launched as thought they were grenades. A mech only needs to be versatile -springing and bouncing from one area of the battle field to the next, unleashing a concoction of smoke grenades [coupled with fireworks for the "flashy, effective distraction" - a moments distraction is all it takes to cost your average soldier their life on the battle field or in civilian spaces], and the occasional handheld tactical nuke-the usual recoil and side-effects will not harm them so much.
And yet, this is all pretty small scaled. Vemas: a mythical weapon of Indian origin will make the perfect weapon of choice for the future! It will tame the skies, dissect and quarantine the land and habitable spaces. It's terror will be sufficient to arrest nations. The future will be a sweet one, and narcissism, willful, pointless egoes (and destructive borderlines), 2D sentience and codependents will be suppressed, so that only genuine intelligence can be cultivated, fostered, and allowed to blossom well into the future and beyond!
AI is the power that will facilitate all of this!
chimera ant is masterpiece. no wonder togashi need 8 years to finish it
The second he started to kneel to Palm... I was broken.
Truly impeccable and great analysis of a great character… keep it up, Brother.
Glad you enjoyed it brother!
Oh man you just helped me tremendously to appreciate the character
Great analogy for how our relationship with artificial super intelligence might play out
I love constant hunter X Hunter parallels so much. When Meruem was born he was evil, cruel and had no humanity in him, where as Gon was still very much kind and innocent, he still had his humanity. By the end of the arc Meruem wants to save the world and protect the weak, he gains his humanity, where as Gon throws away all of his humanity to destroy the person who killed Kite. He not only doesn't care about protecting the weak, threatening to kill the innocent Komugi, only to get his way, he also acts recklessly, nearly ending his own life only to obtain a few minutes of unmatched power.
One of my favorite moments is when he saves Komugi from the birds and questions why himself why he did it
Humanity the virtue is an 'instinct'.
I think 'Meruem' is my favorite character in all of anime (he, along with Aizen). Meruem is the most relatable. Providence? Ahaha.
I’m just glad that there is somebody who appreciates him like I do! I really liked him because he starts out as this giant doosh that you want to die, but then he becomes a sweet empathetic caring person at the end, but it’s super sad because he had finally found the real reason to be alive, but it was too late then, because he was nearing the end of his life

Leave it up to an INTP (💛❤) to write the most compelling story, while accurately demonstrating the nuisances of complex characters to utter perfection! I knew INTPs had vast potential; they are like INXJ. They are the third/second (if INXJ shared in spot) in terms of the latent potential residing within those brain-formation/neurons of humanity and society. Their "MVP-enneagram" is they key to selecting the most successful and effective among them. It also applies to other neuropersonalities (besides sensor-feelers).
MVP-enneagram: 1s, 2w1, 5, and 8. These enneagrams are particularly powerful among their respective neuropersonality/brain-formation.
HxH won people's hearts with two great villains: Meruem and Phantom Troupe
I'm not even Upset Netero lost the battle. He was very old and Meruem is kinda broken, and was born to be that strong thanks to his mom consuming countless ppl. Meruem grew on me. Wish he could have lasted longer.
I wouldn’t say Komugi doesn’t have an ego. I’d say she’s very egotistical, just in the exact opposite way of meruem. She views herself as practically worthless, and attaches her value as a being to solely her personal skill and performance of gungi. I’d say it’s a clash of mental hierarchy, someone who views themselves as the lowest of the low against someone who views themselves as the highest of the high.
this analysis is top tier, one of the best character analysis videos i've ever seen. Keep up the good work!
Kind words. Thank you my friend!
the holy grail of character writing, MERUEM !! All hail the King
Honestly I started out thinking it wasn't anything special but walked away questioning my own humanity
He just didn’t live long enough I think he would’ve turned good he had a heart a lil
Meruem was born prematurely. Of his own volition. Imagine how much stronger and smarter he’d be if he waited a few months to be born fully.
Yup.
Though no one might read this; When I first watched this arc it’s whole tone was darker than anything before. The past arcs have had a sort of innocence to them never going to deep; then this arc took your fuckin heart through a blender as you watched (spoiler) Gon become a monster and a monster become human. This arc in my opinion will go down in anime history as one of the best well written/told stories ever.
I think what made HxH a master piece is that all characters are humanized by their own limitations of humans own imperfection.
Netero finds it necessary to kill Meruem because the villain would never be truly human and he wandered between human and chimera. However, Meruem himself wished that Welfin could live life as a human. Meruem was already more human than chimera and this transition was much more natural than Netero could have imagined. So a concept that I see repeated in the anime and what makes me feel more life in it, is this feeling that at the time the "X" character needs to do what he has to do the way he has to do it. And then there's always the feeling that it could have been different. That bad feeling. And that gives a lot of life to the anime, because all of this is generated by the character's need to do something, but not being able to do it the way he wanted to. Netero wanted a better world, Meruem could really be a great force to help with that goal, but from his experience of a long life, Netero knew that he couldn't trust Meruem with that purpose and so he needed to annihilate him right there, or the world could "end", or close to it. But even the president of the association felt empathy for the villain. And then, at the moment of Meruem's death, when he was "100%" humanized by his own perception of his own limitations, where the only thing that mattered was not power anymore, but spending time with such a "lesser" girl compared to him, but that's feeling.
Conclusion:
Netero was wrong to think that he would not be human enough to help the world. But in the end it was proved otherwise. So there's always that feeling: "it could have been different.". The villain himself told Netero that he would reach justice through pain and fear, but these are already human limitations, because he could have done differently, if the conversation had been 1 month later, or 1 year later, because Meruem was doing a completely natural transition from chimera to human. Then Meruem's sentence also brought his doom, so that Netero would not let him go.
Then again, it could have been different.
the concept that made the audience think:
1. things have to hapens in that way (by moral judgement) (netero --> meruem)
2. then realizes that they'r wrong (and feel sentimental) (meruem --> humanization)
3. and by the end, thinks that things could end different (emotional attachment to character and/or plot)

13:10 Highly relatable. This is the greatest anime, and most meaningfully crafted animated story of all time! The author is clearly a genuine genius. Keep it up, you guys, you are brilliant! Underrated, and yet so effective and vital in humanities development! Where advancement is the INTP is always present. The ideal support for the INXJ (truly a golden pairing, particularly as work colleagues)!

This arc was outstanding
The Chimera Ant arc is still one of my favorite things in fiction ever.
Please analyze and deconstruct the main villain of dungeon meshi!
I think it is one of the best anime arcs ever.
I actually don’t like Hunter all that much...
There are many flaws with the story and characters and setting that both contradict and ruin the story for me... not to mention how absolutely simple a lot of the plots are. Like how the creator literally made Alluka as the biggest “easy out” for Gon after he made a decision in the last season (I won’t spoil)
But one thing I will say.
Is that I like this villain because of how unlike he is from many others. Especially Anime ones....
He doesn’t have a long, tragic backstory or a complicated world view per say. Rather he is just a straight up villain with a particular goal.
I also like how unique he is because even though he is so obviously evil... in case we couldn’t tell from a particular scene in a village he visits.
We can still understand the logic and respect it in some form. It’s very simple and in many ways not entirely wrong.
The main issue of the story in relation to him. Simply had to do with his ignorance of the human nature. Something Netaro points out... for all the advantages and true points he has. He knows nothing of humanity... he’s a villain born out of a misunderstanding of humanity... rather then being an actual full on monster....
Or a sympathetic villain. He is nether. Which is why I can actually praise this as a very good work on the part of the creator.
Not more revolutionary than Lord Pain from Naruto. And is he even over Aizen from Bleach. Idk. Meruem a God tho
