HYMN - All Creatures Of Our God & King LIVE (All Saints Day svc) Sine Nomine postlude improv

  • Recorded on Sunday November 6, 2011 All Saints Day at The Cathedral of St. Luke (Episcopal) Orlando, Florida with the cathedral choir and a packed cathedral to sing the very popular final hymn 'All Creatures Of Our God And King' and I also improvise on the opening hymn (which I didn't play), Sine Nomine or as it's better known, "For All The Saints" as the postlude.
    For all of you critical You Tube arm chair critics with pen and pad in hand to note when someone has missed a note, or used a stop that you don't like, you know who you are, the I don't have a video uploaded myself types who MUST offer their unsolicited opinions as though they're experts, to you folks particular, you in some of my other videos have made it a point of scolding me for my timing WHEN I'M NOT LEADING A CONGREGATION OR A CHOIR in those particular videos, especially when my response has consistently been that I play at any speed that I wish ESPECIALLY since it's just me practicing alone and not leading voices.
    I've had members of that crowd say "Oh, that's not how to lead a choir!" when there isn't a choir there in the video to lead. Well for you folks, this video is how I lead a choir and/or congregation when I have to, and perhaps this ought to quell your concerns about my timing at least until the last verse where I fell behind slightly (that's what I get for not singing along). Besides, I know that my timing stinks, something I readily admit.
    If you appreciate my meager efforts, I’d appreciate your efforts by supporting this channel with whatever comfortable donation you can contribute, and you can do so at:

    Thanks again for your kindness.

    Psalm 150
    “Praise the Lord.
    Praise God in his sanctuary;
    Praise him in his mighty heavens.
    Praise him for his acts of power;
    Praise him for his surpassing greatness.
    Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
    Praise him with harp and lyre,
    Praise him with timbrel and dancing,
    Praise him with strings and pipe,

      Wow Fr. Wallace, that's incredibly generous of you! I can't thank you enough and of course Ben Lane my longtime generous friend. I really enjoyed playing those three services. Because of health issues, I haven't been able to practice in months now and miss playing that organ. I hope to return to practicing at least, thank you so very much and such a pleasure to hear from you!

    Rev. Dr. KING Ferguson! (Yes...because you preach from the keyboard...you operate on each tune, disecting it and putting it back together, and you are the KING of the king of instruments) I was in need of a spiritual lift while I work this morning. I was meandering through a variety of genres here on UA-cam...attempting to find solace and then I remembered...BigDaddyMark. Now two hours in, my work is flowing, I am singing and my soul is free. How I sorely miss the Canon Musician Benjamin Lane whom we lost a handful of years ago, what a "stand up guy" as we say in NYC, he was. Rest well Ben and thanks for your terrific friendship of 30 years and allowing me endless hours on that superb IV/88 that another terrific late friend of mine Gilbert Adams, did some revoicing on that organ making it as wonderful as it is. Thanks to you both and Rest Well gentlemen.

      Sine Nomine was played at my grandparents' memorial service (they passed within hours of each other). If you have a recording of (or would consider one) of "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" it would mean a great deal to me. Both my grandparents were musicians (grandpa an organist and grandma a pianist). The last words I ever heard my grandmother speak were the first lines of "Great is Thy Faithfulness", which she sung at the piano before she she was hospitalized with a terminal prognosis. Thank you so much! I know these hymns are being sung by the saints in heaven :-)

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God" (Heb. 12: 1-2).

    It takes a lot to control such a magnificent instrument as the organ and this man here is gifted. My father in law is the organist for Providence, Rhode Island's Catholic Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Sir Philip Faraone. He is in charge of the church's mighty Casavant manual tracker organ with around 6600 pipes up to 32 feet. If you are ever in the area check it out. It is an organ that goes in noticed, I believe it is the largest manual tracker organ in North America and every pipe even the ones on display have a purpose. This is my favorite of all time hymns. And your improvisations are fantastic.

      That’s the problem recording at the console which is about 15 ft from the facade, so it sounds rather loud when out in the nave it isn’t. Some people here (those know it all UA-cam armchair critics) think that I’m drowning out the choir and congregation when I’m not at all. When recorded from the nave, the organ sounds wonderful. Thanks!

    I was an organist for most of my career of 50 odd years. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your improvisations! During those decades, I played at many churches and directed the various choirs. One of my first tasks was to convince the singers that I set the tempo, not them...
    For a "self proclaimed" amateur, your performance is quite marvelous and inspiring.

      Fr. Leaming,
      I can't thank you enough for your very kind words as they're very most appreciated indeed. I'm an amateur because I never took the steps to become a professional sadly, like taking piano and organ lessons, learning to read music, and thus developing strict discipline.
      At now 65 years of age, it's way too late (I believe) to begin now unfortunately. I'm merely playing for fun, and I share that with kind and generous people such as yourself.
      Thanks once again and all of the very best to you kind Sir.

      Unfortunately, I am not an organist. "The pipe organ at St. James' is a 57 stop, approximately 40 rank instrument comprising pipework of the builders Miller and Able, Hillgreen Lane, and Peragallo. The Peragallo company rebuilt the instrument in 1994, reusing pipework from the previous two installations, some of which dates from before 1900. It is a three-manual and pedal instrument housed in a 1960’s era Austin console. It is tonally most at home playing the French Symphonic repertoire, but handles a wide variety of styles well, and due to its two expressive divisions, is an excellent instrument for choral accompaniment. The current instrument was tonally redesigned and expanded in the American Classical tradition by the Peragallo Pipe Organ Co. of Paterson, NJ during the mid-1990s. Some of the pipework dates back to the original instrument of over a century ago, with enclosed swell and choir divisions. All of the pipework is located in the east wall of the chancel behind two facades, with the console partially hidden from view below. " Taken from our website: www.stjames-longbranch.org I do have a great appreciation for organ music, especially church music. I am the Coordinator for Liturgical Ministries, Co-Chairman of the Historical Committee and a former Senior Warden. I greatly appreciate your talent. God Bless

    @rsmorganjr Thanks, if the choir is good and hopefully mostly professionals, they can carry the tune through any 'treatment' as long as they're good. Every organist/choir director deserves a good choir. I'm neither the organist or choir director/master at this Cathedral, but I was very fortunate enough to play and accompany a really good choir with a high percentage of professionals in it AND a congregation that sings, and likes to sing. Thank you again for your kind comments. Cheers,

I'm sure the worship services in which you play allow all worshippers to enjoy the presence of God through your gifted hands and heart for music. I only wish I could have been in the service. Yes, this hymn is easy for me only because I know it well NOW, but there was a time when I DIDN'T know it so well so perhaps I DID answer your question by suggesting practicing. Listen to your favourite hymn over and over and try to duplicate what you've heard. Try it in different keys too >>
