HYMN - Crown Him With Many Crowns (DIADEMATA) #2 LIVE w/Choir & Congregation

  • Recorded on Sunday November 20, 2011 at The Cathedral of St. Luke, Orlando, Florida followed with a Postlude improvisation on the hymn tune 'Diademata.' At 3:38 UGH!!! THANK GOD the 'Underboss' couldn't make it, he would've fallen over from laughing at me over that slip and then I'd be forced to disown him lol!
The re-harmonization credit goes to Hector Olivera (one chord), Mark Husey (about four chords), and the mind of BDM for the rest. Thank you B.L. for being such a good and generous friend the last 20 years!

Pure, unadulterated musicianship! That was spectacular! As for 3:38, find me the professional organist who doesn't do things like that from time to time! Your playing as an 'amateur' out-classes many who would regard themselves as professionals Greetings from the Liverpool Organists' Association, UK

I wish they had You Tube when I was growing up so I could have recorded my Dad playing the organ at church. You remind me so much of my father back then. I only wish that I had spent more time with him and learned to play the organ when I was younger. I lost him at age 17. God Bless You beautiful work.

At 3:38, that wasn't a mistake. It was a spontaneous harmonic improvisation in the style of Paul Hindemith. I do them all the time !

      🤣🤣🤣🤣!!
Yet another Sloppy Mark goof up. I'm so glad that my son wasn't there to hear that slip, as they'd have to carry him out of the church as he'd be laughing so hard at me.
I don't what's wrong with me now as my playing is even sloppier. Thanks for your hilarious comment, I greatly appreciate that! Take care!

I make those mistakes all the time. Not out of carelessness, but my fingers slip off the keys easily. I just laugh and say I added a bit of jazz to spice things up.

When it says amateur organist this very demeaning and an insult. He is who he is.he has great imagination and a spontaneous delivery that is a natural gift not an amateur show. He is what he is. I have heard some well educated organists who could not play the doxology without the music in front of them. Bruce

@JamesEncliffe Thank you Sir! I FIRMLY believe in using the TOTAL tonal resources of the organ as I'm not a timid player at all as demonstrated. The applause at the end demonstrates that this church enjoys organ music, and for one of the Priests there-at full blast. He told me one Saturday after practicing that he LOVES it when the organ "shakes the building!" If you'll notice me pointing and laughing at the audience, I was pointing at that Priest as he was leading the hooping/hollering lol!.

As they say, "If you are going to make a mistake, DON'T make a timid one!" I find that most of the people in the pews wouldn't notice a mistake in playing if it smacked them in the face. I love this hymn and it made me want to sing even though I'm at work.

The re-harmonizations I've heard you do on a few hymns have left me breathless to say the least. Not since I was a teenager going to Riverside Church in NYC every Sunday to hear Fred Swann TEAR UP hymns on that mighty Aeolian-Skinner V/206, have I heard such fine service playing as you provide making 38 ranks sound like 98 ranks! Generally speaking, I don't do requests because I'm an amateur organist who's not professionally trained and plays by ear. If I know the music that you request, I'll do my best to play it and do it justice. I haven't played the organ in nine months or so due to health issues, so I'm not sure when I could honour your request.

Thank you, and your son will be a far better organist than I am (I'm an amateur). Good luck to him and encourage him to keep at it as we need more great organists in our ranks. Have a terrific New Year!

To Scott Robelot, so very sorry for the delayed response as I got your question on Google + and oddly, not here on UA-cam in the comments section of this video where I could've answered it sooner. Also, your question only shows up on my phone and not on my desktop, so go figure....
The 32' Contra Bourdon is actually a 16' Bourdon that is capped, and the 32' Contra Posaune is 1/2 length, but good especially C, C#, and D. Have you seen the stoplist? You seemed to be familiar with it.

Oh, okay that's a good place to find information. I'm glad that you got my reply. This and the earlier videos shot from the gallery don't do the organ much justice although oddly enough, my latest videos sound far better than this one (perhaps having the camcorder on the right side versus the left side of the console makes a difference) but the absolute best is called 'Come Labor On Rehearsal' which was recorded from the nave floor away from the organ with the acoustics of the room really making it a spectacular sound in my opinion. You get to hear the organ as though you were walking around the church as my son (the cameraman) was nearest the Altar with the organ at the other end in the gallery. Check out that video and you'll hear the difference, and how effective the 32' Posaune really is and just how fiery the Trompette en Chamade is too on its low wind pressure. Thanks!

Big Daddy Mark I am truly one of your greatest fans, you did an incredible job as always, how you can play everything without music (to the extent you have to have the choir director remind you which verse you're on) is beyond me, but absolutely incredible to watch and listen to. You are a true master, and you are also hilarious when you make a minor "typo" when playing, you about fly off the bench and flip off the keyboard hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Abe! You keep disappearing then showing up out of the blue LOL. How are you? I hope all is good with you. Thanks yet again for your kind words as always. Yeah, I didn't have the hymnal open to follow the verses and forgot where I was in numbers of stanzas. Yes my reaction to my stupid mistakes has been taken notice of by MANY with them finding great humour in it. My son is the ringleader, and LOVES to see me make mistakes so that he can have a good laugh to my predictable reaction. Stay in touch buddy, and take care!

Hey Mark! So sorry I don't always reply to your vids in a timely manner, even though I am subscribed to your channel, your newest vids don't always show up in my new vids to watch queue! I will have to watch more carefully, because you are one of the greatest organists I have ever seen! And yes, I can understand your son loving it when you make a mistake cuz your reaction is always priceless and to be honest, your "mistakes" are usually so minor no one would ever notice! And I still can't get over how you never use music yet you have every hymn completely memorized, and you can completely ad lib entire processionals...AMAZING talent!!!!! Thanks for sharing, and bringing much joy!
      Abe

Thanks Abe, and don't worry about prompt replies either, it's no big deal. I've had the same issue with not being notified that a channel I'm subscribed to has posted a new video. I wish that Google would get their act together....

Mark, I'm back, and I'll be ready to get your CD this Wednesday. I wish I'd not had to wait so long, but it really was a bit difficult year. At any rate, I want to send the CD to my nephew and his family. They're very involved with their church (also Episcopal), and he's in their choir. I don't have to wonder whether they'll love this because I know they will.
I hope life is treating you well, good sir. It's so good to hear your music again. :)
