Hey quick story I thought you guys would enjoy: I actually lived in Póvoa de Varzim for a great part of my life, right by Caxinas and Coentrão was my neighbour (2 buildings to the left) for a few years. I saw him in his balcony all the time and most of the time he parked his dark grey Ferrari California in front of the building, I love cars so I was always in awe of it. Once during a local celebration, he even came out to the balcony to greet the people and everyone chanted his name. That region is very talented, Bruno Alves lived in that same street as well, alongside his brothers and father who were also pros. He was really nice and I even asked him for his autograph once. And Luis Neto who played at Zenit lived in the same building as me for a bit. Helder Postiga is also from that region supposedly but I never saw him.
Many footballers after retiring they get depression because all their life they were been train and brainwash that they were born to do that for their rest of their life. Coentrao on the other hand found peace by going back to his roots and where he came from :)
Coentrao is actually one of my favourite Mourinho signings in Madrid, I also remember him playing exceptionally well in Euro 2012. Definitely very underrated and a key player of Real stopping Barca's dominance.

As a Benfica fan, he was one of my favorite players back then. He played a role in some of Real Madrid's wins but in terms of individual performance I would still say that the best season of his career, by far, was 2010-2011 at Benfica. He often gets praised for being a great full-back defensively, but he was also phenomenal offensively. Prime Coentrão would've thrived in modern football as a wing-back in the 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 systems. He was tireless and had the physical, defensive, and technical attributes to pretty much fill the whole left flank (full-back + winger roles) on his own oftentimes. I'm still convinced that if in 2011, when he left Benfica, he had left for literally any other team in the world (including the best Barcelona team of all time) he would've been an indisputable starter. But he went to Real Madrid, who had Marcelo, pretty much the only full-back in the world at the time who was good enough to bench him.
