How good was Mario Jardel actually? #GOAT
New video about one of the most controversial and naturally talented players we've seen over the 1990's in football. In this episode we take on Mario Jardel who played for Porto, Sporting, Galatasaray, Bolton and Gremio for most of his career.

Brazil had Ronaldo, Romario, Ronaldinho, Elber, Sony Anderson, Jardel all to choose from in 98-02, which is absolutely insane. A magician like Djalminha barely got play because of the same reason. It's mindfuck how Vampeta or Edmilson got a WC2002 call-up but neither Elber or Jardel did (Romario was snubbed due to his Copa America 2001 drama)

Jardel was probably the best finisher i’ve seen in my lifetime. Sublime in the air, could score with both feet and was deadly in front of goal, but was rather clumsy and slow. He could only do one thing on a football pitch, to score many goals. The most “pure striker” ever.

Jardel was unbelievable and unique. Sadly for him to demonstrate all his best abilities you would have to build a team and a tactic around him. In Portugal both in Porto and Sporting this was incredibly efficient, and having Jardel would pretty much guarantee you'd win the title. The problem with going to a Real Madrid, Barça, Inter or others is that these teams would have bigger stars that would not want to play exclusively to serve Jardel. But if any of those teams would have done it we would probably be looking at the highest goal scorer of all times, I have no doubt about that. Imagine what this guy would do with a Figo, Zidane, Beckham, Rivaldo etc. crossing balls to him...

Thank you so much for this very informative video! I used to read about Jardel's exploits in the newspapers all the time as a child and I always wondered why he didn't have a longer run in the Selecao....maybe his drug problem was the reason why he was not picked more regularly?
The next step for me would be to look for footage of him so I could see in action the things I used to read about. He did very well to mentor Cristiano!

I first heard of Jardel when he was at Galatasary and he scored both Galastasary's goals in a 2-1 win over Real Madrid to win the UEFA Super Cup. As Brazil refused to select him he could of had become a Portuguese citizen and switched to Portugal like Deco did. I wonder if he played for Portugal he could have saved them from 1st round elimination in 2002?

Great Jardel, my "countryman" from the Ceará State in Brazil, I had the pleasure to see him many times when I worked at the President Vargas Stadium, in Fortaleza, circa 2014. Always restless, agitated, sniffing his nose, a shadow of his former self physically, but always impressive, with incredible commanding posture around fans and politicians trying to snap a photo with him. That was right before he moved to the extreme opposite of Brazil, thousands of miles alway, to the city of Porto Alegre, home of his former team, Grêmio, and became a state congressman there, and soon thereafter was impeached for corruption... One of the biggest failed promisses in football history.
