    I am from Croatia and we had a TV show called Petica (Five) that every Monday showed match highlights from top 5 European leagues, I always especially loved the Premier league segment and watched in awe the amazing goals scored, many of them by this guy playing for Southampton and with a French sounding surname. Le Tissier became for me synonymous with crazy goals outside of the box!

    Despite his lack of strength, speed, and agility, and incredibly unassuming look - Matt Le Tissier was one of the most technically skilled players that English football has ever seen.
    So underrated in fact, that as a midfielder, he would genuinely outscore some of the best strikers you could think of in the 90s to early 2000s and even set records that had never been done before.

    Youngsters do not understand just how ridiculously talented Matt Le Tissier was as a player. He literally forced the game to be played at his own pace, regardless of what was going on around him. It was almost magic. Some of the goals he scored at his peak are genuinely astonishing. Especially in the era of football we're talking about, he's a true example of what people mean when they talk about a 'one-man team'. ❤

  • @SonnyK248
    @SonnyK248 3 дні тому +12

    Le Tisser was world class. I'll never hear any different. All the negative press he got was just made by dinosaur English football journalists who had no idea what they were talking about. There are maybe a room full of people in the history of the game who could do what Le Tisser could do with a football. His technique was completely maxed out. As for the criticisms about his laziness. He wasn't supposed to track back, that was just lazy football journalism. No one ever said Cantona doesn't track back enough or Bergkamp or Zola or any of the number 10's playing for the big European clubs like Baggio or Mancini. They were luxury number 10 players who you always gave the ball to and they made stuff happen. Between 1900 and 1995 Le Tisser scored 85 league goals in 5 seasons. That's 17 a season as an attacking midfielder. He was an incredibly consistent scorer and single handedly saving his club from relegation and people were calling him lazy... For me he has a case for being arguably the greatest goalscorer who ever lived. Maybe no player in history has a top 30 goals list that matches his. How England didn't exploit this is beyond me. Personally I'd have built the team around him in the early 90's but at the very least he should have been on the bench every game. If you needed a goal in the last ten minutes, get him on and tell EVERYONE to give him the ball because he's one of those rare players that can get you a goal from less than nothing.

      I'd argue that it had more to do with Venables.
      It was pretty clear that, after his knee injury. Gazza wasn't the player he once was, and that if Le Tissier could prove that he could do it for England, he'd take Gascoigne's place in the international team. When Gazza broke his leg in 1994 and was out for a year, Venables trotted out every excuse in the book not to pick Le Tissier in his place, and left him out of the Euro 96 squad.
      By the time Hoddle took over, there were a whole raft of younger players coming through, and Le Tissier was pushing 30, which was pretty much the end for international players back then.
