Wondering which cool flowers you should only count on for one round of blooms? Today, Lisa and Layne discuss their list of "one and done" cool flowers and explain why this list of plants may differ depending on your climate. They cover why each of these plants is considered "one and done", why they are worth growing, approximately how many stems you can expect from each plant, and tips for succession planting. Listen to the podcast and learn which cool flowers you can remove after their first round of blooms and which you should plant successions of!

Good Morning y'all. I'm loving this early morning video riding from Long Island to Brooklyn. Pack with great info! You guys are amazing. My seeds came and my blocker came from you guys ❤️!!!!
Such a fun way to start your day! So happy you enjoyed this episode ☺ Sounds like you have all your supplies ready for a bountiful garden this year - hope you love soil blocking as much as we do! Have a great day, and thanks so much for watching 🤗
I absolutely love soil blocking. I learned to do it last spring & early summer, I practiced succession planting. I had so much better success seed starting, it was so exciting. I did make some mistakes, over or under watering, leaving plants too long - not planting out when they were ready. The experience of learning to seed start in soil blocks was so valuable to me I didn't let the failures get me down. I hope you have great success, and as much fun with the soil blocking as I did.
Thanks for all of the great info as always!
You are so welcome, Bernadine! Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment! 🤗
Thanks for all the great information. MORE!
Love these ladies! I am a backyard flower lover, no farm here in Zone 8A. I retired and have renewed my gardening love. Could not have done this without these ladies and Lisa’s Cool Flower Book!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Always happy to meet a fellow flower-loving home gardener 💚 Wishing you a beautiful spring garden, full of cool flowers! 🤗

Thank you so much ladies! So many plants I thought I'd failed because they didn't last long! Now I realize I just didn't understand them. I really appreciate how generously you share your knowledge. It renews my confidence in being able to grow a beautiful garden. I'm so glad you share that powerful feeling with the world. 🙌🙏✨💕🌱💐🌻
You make such a great point, Cheryl! So often when people have seed starting or gardening "failures", it is simply because the plants were not being grown in the conditions they needed to thrive 🌱 Thanks so much for sharing this inspiring message, and have a fantastic day! 💚🤗💚
Thank you! You, too. I recently said I'd never grow Stock again even though I absolutely love it, yet with the info you shared here I might try again! 🙌🌱💐😍

Awesome episode! Took a page of notes. Had to listen twice to get it all down! Thank you so much.
So happy you enjoyed this episode and that you had your notepad handy! 📝 Thanks so much for watching and for the positive feedback 🤗 Have a fantastic day!
Love these videos!!! They're so helpful. I try to watch them at least twice so I can take good notes the second time. I'm a beginner flower farmer but I've been gardening for years across the US (Montana, California, North Carolina). I had never heard of flowers like Stock, and most of the other cool flowers until a few months ago. I planted some stock seedlings outside in November 2022. I'm in Zone 8A in Eastern NC. We had a cold spell of 12-18 degrees at night for about a week over Christmas and I was shocked they all survived and they look amazing right now. (I had Agribon 30 as cover.) Even more shocking to hear they're only winter hardy to Zone 8. Tough little plants and so much fun to grow. I'm having so much fun reading your books and watching your videos, Lisa!!! I never thought I would have a complete career change from dietitian and diabetes educator to flower farmer and I am absolutely loving life!!! Please keep these wonderful educational videos coming!!!
Thanks for the positive feedback, Emily! ☺ Please take as many notes as you would like 🗒 Glad you have discovered the wonderful world of cool flowers, and I am thrilled to hear your stock survived the cold spell! 🥶 Thanks so much for watching, and have a lovely day! 🤗
I am very inspired by you! You are very positive and motivating. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Bernadette! Wishing you a fantastic day and a beautiful spring garden 🤗
Great video! I always enjoy these:)
Thank you, Madonna! Glad you enjoyed it! 🤗

thank you for great information
Great show
I’m so glad I found you Lisa! I have totally revised my planting calendar and is this spring going to plant out my hardy annuals 6 weeks before my last expected frost date (27 April). I’m also going to start using my soilblocker, which I’ve had for two years. I live in southern Sweden and this hardy annual stuff is totally new for us. /Love, Anna
So excited for your cool flowers garden this spring, Anna! Best of luck with your soil blocking, as well - hope you love it as much as we do 💚 Thanks so much for watching, and have a great day! 🤗
So helpful!! Answered many things I haven’t been able to understand. Thank you!!
I appreciate all of this information. Lisa you are a wonderful lady.
These women know their stuff!!
Thank you
Thank you! I am learning so much and have been adding some of your beautiful flower seeds to my collection. My husband says I should have bot more acreage lol!
😂 I can totally relate to that! Wishing you a bountiful spring garden filled with as many cool flowers as you can squeeze in ☺ Thanks so much for watching, Darlene!
This episode was awesome! This type of information is so interesting and practical. I took lots of notes to help me plan for future years. I especially appreciated you including the usda hardiness zone for each plant
So happy you enjoyed this episode, Tori! Thanks so much for watching and for letting us know it was helpful 🤗 Have a great day!
This was the best podcast! It prevented me from planting the right flowers at the wrong time and in the wrong way! I soaked Bells of Ireland seeds and was ready to start them inside tomorrow instead of seeding them outside next fall. You saved me time, disappointment and valuable bed space. Now I can grow other cool flowers that DO like to be started in very early spring in 7a-b. Whew! That was a close call.🌻😅
So happy to hear this was helpful, Barbara! What perfect timing 😂 Thanks so much for watching and for letting us know you found it useful! 🤗
Thanks so much for this information. It is all so valuable and I love listening to the eps over and over again. I do have a question about stocks though. Do you have thoughts/advice on selecting for doubles? Thank you!
This information was super useful. Knowing what to plan successions for and what to not even try until fall has saved my cut flower patch. I’m new to flowers so widespread failures may have dissuaded me from gardening altogether.
Feverfew is also my all time favorite 😍.
Yay - a fellow feverfew lover 🥰 So happy you found this episode helpful, Kellie! Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment 🤗
I'm so curious why I get so many stems from my stock flower plants! I just counted, and I've got NINE stems in my vase that came from ONE plant. The main flower in the middle is the big one, but all the stems off the side are nearly as long as a ruler. Fills up a vase beautifully, but I keep hearing they're supposed to be a one flower plant. Maybe it's our sub tropical area.
I know this is not about sunflowers but some of my sunflowers came up and some of them didn't. I started them on the heated mats but some of the bigger seeds did not come up. Should I have started the larger seeds in more soil?
Would love to grow Larkspur but it never seems to germinate for me, even with pre-freezing the seeds. What might be going wrong?
How long of a stem for commercial use is desirable?
💖💖💖💖💖💖😊👋🏼👏🏽
Thanks so much for watching, Merlita! 💚🤗💚
One question gone completely left out - does a plant attract pollinators?
I think this is a great idea for a future episode! Thanks for watching 😊
