So I made my husband come watch one of your garden tour videos with me, because I love how you do things and I think it's a lot how I'd like to grow flowers. I love how you grow your cut flower "farm" more like a garden with thick borders. I live on .4 acres. so not huge, but definitely room to work with. But It's also my home and I'd like it to look beautiful as well. So a question I have for you is about support. A lot of flower farmers say you have to use netting for things like snapdragons, bachelors buttons, and others. How do you work around that? Do you find it's not necessary if you have clumps of different heights that are supporting each other? I do remember you saying your Amaranth got knocked over last year... Just looking for any thoughts you have from your experience of growing flowers a little less "farm"-like.:-)
Hello flower friend! I have done a few variations of support in the past. The first two years I grew to sell to florists I corralled all my long beds. Those were where my veggie boxes are now. I do net my snaps, ammi, bells of ireland, and cosmos. I coral my zinnias. I only sell at our farm stand now so I don't have to worry about perfect stems. By the time that garden tour was filmed all those had been harvested and what you are seeing is more of my "for us" garden. You can see the corralling I used in the best annuals to start from seed video I made. I think it really depends on what you goal is - do you want to sell each and every stem you grow to a florist - definitely coral or net because you will need the strong straight stems and won't want to take a financial loss if a row falls over. But if you are just going to grow for the joy of cutting bouquets for your family I would just stick the plants in your border! Some plants are more likely to fall over than others - my bachelor buttons always topple over - but I don't mind because they don't bring alot per stem - they are just filler. I have never netted things like lilies and glads and they always stay up fine. I hope that's helpful and not confusing!

Here it is November 2021, and I'm rewatching this one for a great refresher on Cool Flower planting! I'm in Texas, zone 8, and we're always a couple months behind all of y'all up North. So even all the way into November I'm just barely "on time" to plant my Cool Flower seeds outside. For instance, today my high temperature is forecasted to be 79°, and our lows this week are 54°. The soil is still warm enough to plant seeds, and the nights are still mild. I will be crossing my fingers for continued mild temps like this, the weather could turn on a dime, but hey, it's definitely worth a shot! Thanks for the great info in this vid!! ❤

I zone 8a I did winter sowing Bachelor Bottoms and also direct sowed seeds in Feb..both did great. I am going to experiment with direct sowing other cold hardy annuals next year to not have to worry about winter sowing and seed starting inside

I was looking in my garden the other day and I identified a sunflower seedling! I planted some sunflower seeds from my sunflower in October to make it think it self seeded. I planted 20 and so far I saw 3 come up! I’m in Connecticut and we may get a frost tonight so I covered the seedlings with a cloth. I was surprised that no animal found it and it came back on its own. I’m ahead of the game and it still isn’t time to direct sow yet. Maybe in a week. I took your advice on starting dahlias early indoors and they look like they’re doing well. There’s green leaves on them and the stem is red. They’re are dinner plate dahlias. More shoots are coming up. Wish me luck. Thanks for the tips!
So happy I found this video. After reading a couple of books on Cold Hardy flowers I was still a tad confused and afraid to try it. Planting things in spring are a real struggle here in 8a, where temperatures routinely reach the 100s and there isn’t a lot of rain at all. As a side note, do you remember where you bought your coat? I am 8b, and the winter here most of the time is basically slug topia -- certain things get absolutely mowed down. What are your methods of choice?

Hi! I live in zone 8 and tried out the fall planting cool flowers for the first time. One thing I would like to share with y'all is that we had an extremely warm winter this year, and we just had our first frost in January. The temperature drooped from 70F to 25F in one day!! The plants that were supposed to be hardy did not take well with the sudden drop of temperature. I lost 1/3 of snapdragon, 1/3 of straw flower, almost all of the Victoria blue sage, which is a perennial in my zone. I am guessing either the seedlings couldn't take the sudden change of weather (just like without harden of period), or maybe the longer than usual grow season had bring the baby seedlings to their "teenager" age, and tricked them to think it was spring already. Any thoughts my fellow gardener friends?
I’m in 8b and I rarely have luck with this method. I don’t know anyone around this area that has much success with it either. No idea why. This year I started some love in a mist and poppy seedlings early indoors and set them out already (mid Feb). I’m going to try a frost blanket for when it dips down quickly and see if it helps.

Ok, so, you basically ignore what the package says, right? Also, I have about 2 and sometimes 3 inches of mulch on my garden beds... tossing some seeds in the fall will produce flowers? Hello! I grow in zone 5b, and am looking to start some early blooming flowers! I grew a beautiful summer crop last year, but the wait for those to bloom leaves me many early months of no growth! If i planted these hardy annuals in the fall (after my summer crop is dead), would these bloom before i need to sow seeds in the spring? I know they overwinter, but my hope is that ill have blooms before i need to sow seeds in May. I'm sure two gardens would be ideal for this option, but i only have one. So im trying to squeeze in as much growth as i can, during the months when my garden doesn't produce. Thanks so much! 🌱💛

Is it possible for snapdragons to bloom when dahlias are in bloom? I'm in Southern IL and I'm looking for some flowers that will bloom and look good in a dahlia bouquet. Thanks!
Hi Brandi! What zone is that? You may be able to get a rocket snap to bloom then unless your weather is still very warm. Since Dahlia's bloom later things like zinnias, sunflowers, celosia, ageratum, amaranth, black eyed susan, gomphrena would be blooming at the same time. You could also plan glads to bloom at the needed time.
This is my first season starting different varieties of hardy annuals. I started them back in February. I am wondering when I should plant them outside? I garden in zone 5b. We have had beautiful weather for March, but I am sure we will get another frost. So I am just wondering when I should plant my seedlings out?

Do you harden off to cold the same way you harden off for full sun? I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that you can take a seedling raised indoors and put it out for an hour in 30 degree temps and it won't die. I knew some annual seeds were hardy as certain plants always comes back the next spring, but those seedlings are used to the cold as they have germinated in the fluctuating temps.
Hi Vanessa! I'm so sorry I am just seeing this now! I'm not sure why but youtube seems to only notify of a handful of comments on the latest video published. Bachelors buttons should be direct sown either 6-8 weeks before your first OR 6-8 weeks before your last frost. So you can still plant them in very early spring this year - they will just be a pit shorter than the fall sown ones.
How do you harden them off? Is it the usually process? Couple of hours each day?? My Love-in-a-mist are almost blooming, can they go out too? I’m in zone 6A in Northern Connecticut.
About how many of each plant do you start inside? For example zinnias or snapdragons or any other cut flowers? I'm just not sure where to start since this is my first year. I have an 18 x 30 area set aside for flowers but I will also be sowing perennials in little areas around that and around my yard and vegetable garden

Do you put foxgloves and other toxic flowers in bouquets for sale? Do you add any warning? Personally I'd prefer not causing alarm to people who don't understand that a large percentage of flowers are poisonous and who might overreact. If we didn't use poisonous flowers there would be so many not available to us. How do you handle this?
On those feverfew- is that from just one seed or do you sow several seeds together? Its hard to tell if thats just one plant. I've never grown it and am growing it for the first time this year.

In Cedar City, Utah a neighbor always had pansies so early; now, I know they must be a hardy annual. He planted them in the fall.

Hello! I grow in zone 5b, and am looking to start some early blooming flowers! I grew a beautiful summer crop last year, but the wait for those to bloom leaves me many early months of no growth! If i planted these hardy annuals in the fall (after my summer crop is dead), would these bloom before i need to sow seeds in the spring? I know they overwinter, but my hope is that ill have blooms before i need to sow seeds in May.
I'm sure two gardens would be ideal for this option, but i only have one. So im trying to squeeze in as much growth as i can, during the months when my garden doesn't produce. Thanks so much! 🌱💛

Thanks, lots of good information. I am in zone 6b here in the Denver area and found that many fall planted flowers really do seem more hardy. Since you sell your flowers, can you do a video about how to figure out how to price your flowers? Hi Brandi! What zone is that? You may be able to get a rocket snap to bloom then unless your weather is still very warm. Since Dahlia's bloom later things like zinnias, sunflowers, celosia, ageratum, amaranth, black eyed susan, gomphrena would be blooming at the same time. You could also plan glads to bloom at the needed time.
This is my first season starting different varieties of hardy annuals. I started them back in February. I am wondering when I should plant them outside? I garden in zone 5b. We have had beautiful weather for March, but I am sure we will get another frost. So I am just wondering when I should plant my seedlings out?
But if you put Snapdragon seedlings outside 6 weeks before the last frost.... That's a long time. What happens to them when it freezes or snow?

I don't mulch anything initially until it's up and growing at least 6 inches. Then I will come between rows with shredded leaves.
Do you harden off to cold the same way you harden off for full sun? I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that you can take a seedling raised indoors and put it out for an hour in 30 degree temps and it won't die. I knew some annual seeds were hardy as certain plants always comes back the next spring, but those seedlings are used to the cold as they have germinated in the fluctuating temps.
Now that it's getting to be fall when I'm watching this, what date should I plant bachelor's buttons for zone 7a?
Hi Vanessa! I'm so sorry I am just seeing this now! I'm not sure why but youtube seems to only notify of a handful of comments on the latest video published. Bachelors buttons should be direct sown either 6-8 weeks before your first OR 6-8 weeks before your last frost. So you can still plant them in very early spring this year - they will just be a pit shorter than the fall sown ones.

Hi Sharon. It depends on the flower, but generally I do about 42 cells of each flower per succession. I direct sow zinnias.

Do you put foxgloves and other toxic flowers in bouquets for sale? Do you add any warning? Personally I'd prefer not causing alarm to people who don't understand that a large percentage of flowers are poisonous and who might overreact. If we didn't use poisonous flowers there would be so many not available to us. How do you handle this?
On those feverfew- is that from just one seed or do you sow several seeds together? Its hard to tell if thats just one plant. I've never grown it and am growing it for the first time this year.

Hi Susan! I do have bunnies and squirrels, but they seem to leave these things alone. Sunflowers are the main flower I have to protect.
