I've had the Hilton Surpass for 2 Years now, and it's no secret that I love Hilton Credit Cards, since Hilton Honors Points have been what has allowed me to book 5 Nights at the Playa del Carmen all-inclusive resort during my honeymoon. Plus, in addition to that, I specifically used my Hilton Surpass this year to earn a Free Night Certificate that I used to stay at the Waldorf Astoria Cancun.
Despite the value that I've gotten, I have reached a breaking point with the Hilton Surpass, in which I've had to make a major decision. So, in the video, I'll break-down the Good & the Bad on the Hilton Surpass, my rationale for why I decided to downgrade my Hilton Surpass & my plan to potentially add the Hilton Surpass again in the future.

The HH card is pretty underrated. For no AF, you get status, highish multipliers, and no FTF. It’s pretty rare. The new surpass is a good example of what CGP Grey called “missing middles”. Mid-tier cards have a hard time cutting it anymore against the valuable no AF cash back cards or the luxury cards that pack a big punch.
Completely agree Elliott! The HH Card still gives you an opportunity to rack up a sizeable amount of points with the bonus too. Definitely a good argument to be made that you should either start with the no fee lower tier cards and then just jump to the luxury cards with a bunch of benefits. Thank you for your support!
I feel the opposite, actually. I feel the middle tier is the best. The HH only grants silver. With automatic Gold status from the Surpass you earn 4 times as many bonus points (80% over 20%) and the free breakfasts/hotel credits will basically pay for the membership fee.
Really, if you stay just 5 nights at one place and get free breakfast that's probably close to $100 savings before anything else. I would assume if you are signing up for a hotel credit card you're probably staying in a hotel more than 5 nights per year. I travel for work. Not extensively. But usually 5 or 6 times per year for 2 - 5 days at a time each. For me, the free gold status and free breakfasts more than pay for the annual fee. Everything else is gravy.
Loved the overview of your experience. I’m looking to move into the world of hotel cards at some point next year. Thinking of getting the Hyatt card and hoping Hyatt releases a premium card soon!

It makes sense to downgrade and get the upgrade offer. Similar to what I'm doing with my Delta cards and I might actually get the Hilton Honors card again and wait for an upgrade offer while keeping the Hilton Business and the Aspire

Great overview of your experience Matt! Yeah, I think the Surpass is great for that $15k FNA, but because you already have a Hilton Business card too, it's almost like having the same card twice! And right now the Hilton Business has the lower annual fee and no statement credits, but I'm pretty sure that the Business card will be getting refreshed soon. We'll have to see what happens!

The Hilton Business & Hilton Surpass are just so dang similar that yeah there’s too much crossover for me haha. Totally makes sense, that’s why I downgraded the Surpass last year. Double dipping status for no other benefits other than the welcome offer.
I probably will still downgrade her’s after using some Gift cards with the Hotel credit but I think like you, probably not worth it, might as well go Aspire.

Yeah exactly, so much crossover between the Hilton Business & Hilton Surpass that in my opinion it just only makes sense to have one of them. Luckily I was targeted for a 50k upgrade offer so I’ll probably be adding the Surpass again sooner rather than later haha. Thanks so much Anthony! I got it recently for our tax payment. I’ll keep the card as long as they have the FNC for $15k.

The Surpass makes sense if you stay at Hiltons every few months. I get $30 F&B credit every night. I also use the $50 quarterly credit. Id make 300+ Dollars if I just stayed once quarterly.
Absolutely! Yeah if you can organically use the $200 Hilton Credit, the Surpass makes a ton of sense.
I’m sure having the Hilton Business card made the decision a lot easier. Gotta keep the Gold status to get free breakfast or the food and beverage credit

Gold status for international hotels for the win. Other UA-camrs dont value this simply because they don't (often) go overseas.
