I delivered my bachelor's on Wednesday, and celebrated by finishing War and Peace. I still have two exams left (and two years to go), but it is so nice to be done with that. W & P was so good and now I can't wait to read Anna Karenina

*We get Pierre's character just through the way he smiles* : Yes, read Nabokov's lectures on Russian writers as well as what he wrote on Dickens and Joyce and Flaubert.

I wasn’t able to join in reading War and Peace these couple months because of my schedule with school, but your vlogs make me so excited to pick it up eventually! Probably on a break lol. I did decide to pick up Oliver Twist early as it’s a much shorter read and really enjoyed it!

My two favorite translator are the Mauds, and Pevear and Volokhonsky! Each pair are a married couple, and I found both very approachable! I also recommend finding a sample of different translations online, or maybe stop into a bookshop if you can to see which you prefer! I hope this helps, and happy reading :)

Only actors don't match the characters. People aged 40 and 50 playing 20-years old ones was not the best idea...

you should watch war and peace 1966 russian 4 movie series. imo its the best adaptation. and imo ludmila savelyeva, is the best natasha. its even online in official mosfilm youtube channel with english subs. and there are of course fan edits and clips.

Carolyn, I hope you don't fall in love with someone like Prince Andrei! A man can be complex, deep and interesting without being supercilious, arrogant and cold. He must be an extreme Aquarius. It runs in his family, look at the old prince, how he mistreats his daughter Princess Maria, how he does not bother to conceal his contempt for the little princess, and the cruel treatment he gave Natasha when she visited after getting engaged to Prince Andrei, it was an ultimate insult, so calculated, pointed and aimed to hurt. And then, Count Rostov, who never takes his duties seriously and is only keen on enjoying good living, failed Natasha on two crucial occasions: one being his escaping from a difficult situation and leaving his daughter to fend for herself in such icy coldness of Prince Andrei's family, the other being when Natasha was being seduced by Anatole, under his very watch. I want to scream! Well, that's why Tolstoy is such an incomparable master. On the one hand, there is a man who despise women; on the other, a man who is too weak to stand up and protect his women.
