- Hello Friends!
The time has come...War and Peace has been FINISHED!!!
It feels like I read this groundbreaking book in the blink of an eye. At the same time, it has also felt like a lifetime!
I never want to stop talking about this book, and I honestly don’t think I ever will!
I knew I would love it, but I didn’t expect it to grow and change with me as I read. War and Peace takes place over many years, chronicling the evolution of its beloved characters. It felt like I, as the reader, also evolved with them in my own way.
All I can say is, Thank you Tolstoy!
If you’re waiting for a sign to tell you to finally pick up War and Peace, THIS IS IT!
holds up a big sign that says “Read War and Peace!”
Sending you my very best wishes!
Carolyn :)

Classics have my entire heart! I am new to your channel and have been binging your content...you were meant to do this! I cannot wait for more Classics content from you and I could listen to you talk about books for hours. I am old enough to be your mom(well, maybe not quite) but to have found someone who speaks so well of a genre that I love so much, well, all I can say is I'm glad you're in the world sharing your love with all of us.
omg i've never seen the illustrated covers for persephone WOWWWWW so stunning
It's been a treat to be following your journey with War and Peace. I love how true you are, like a character from a Tolstoy novel. And you are not emotionally destroyed, you are discovering parts of your soul you didn't know existed, Russian soul ❤️
Yes! It is the lyricism of the words that encompasses the true beauty and genius. Well said
Omg this is great!!! Having carolyn and emmie post a vid on the same day!!! ♥️ Stay safe, old sport!
yesh i just watched emmie
exactly how i responded!
Watching these videos of people who finished war and peace while I am just starting 😅
I love how passionate you are about classics! The hidden gems classics sounds great 👍 Hope you have a good vacation!
I read Eugene Onegin after War and Peace too, I think you'll like it!
Why is the War and Peace debate video private? Would love to watch it. ❤
Going back to watch your video. I have just finished reading War and Peace. Loved it. Thank you to you and Emma. It was a great journey reading War and Peace and watching your videos.
I love what you said on the value of the actual writing and not just in what happens. ❤️
Currently I’m reading Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. I’ve been reading over the course of 3 months and I’m now 70 % through. I loved the musical so much and saw it 5 times on stage. Hugo is tangential at times but I do love the in depth back stories of the characters. Im just loving it!
Awww, another Les Mis fan! I've read it this year too and I really loved it!
It's my fav book ever! I also liked The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
hey! i’m from Russia, and to be honest, it was a pleasure watching your video! i’m glad people from another countries reading our literature and love it! 🥺
as about me, i adore Tolstoy and his art! also my favourite authors are Nabokov, Turgenev, Chekhov and Bulgakov🫂❤️
You just made my day 💛📚
Love Persephone Books. I used to adore going to their London bookshop and was quite sad when that closed and moved to Bath, but I’m sure I’ll take a trip down there one day as my daughter is going to University in Bristol which is nearby. Beautiful books and lovely staff. Thank you for your lovely videos. Melanie 🌺
Thank you for sharing and enjoy your vacation!
I’ve loved your War and Peace reading vlogs so much!
Your voice is so calming ♥️
I would recommend Somerset Maugham as an underrated classics author! The only two I've read of his are The Razor's Edge (which is incredible please read it!) and Of Human Bondage (which is also such a good book!), but he was such a prolific author and has written so many good novels as far as I can tell from what I've read or heard about him. I'm excited to read more of his work and would encourage anyone to read him! The movie adaption of The Razor's Edge starring Bill Murray is also excellent :) Cheers and happy classics reading
watching this again while i wait for your next upload :))
More classics content? Where do I sign in? Wait... I've already signed in... ^^'
Keep being you, Carolyn, you're great! :D
Great job, Carolyn!
Hello. if you love russian classic, I think Gogol, Chehov, Dostoevskiy, can be interesting too. And about "War and Peace", Sergei Bondarchuk made a movie in 1965, its beautiful and good picture.
An amazing book series for your hidden gems series would be The Five Little Peppers books by Margaret Sydney! They follow a large, poor family as the kids grow up and they’re just beautiful 🙏🏻 perfect for an autumn/winter read
I did get your thank-you note! The end of the school year was stressful for us teachers, too, so I didn't get a chance to reply. :) I'm so pleased that you love the books that much! I just got a few new Russian classics, myself. I'll send you a picture soon so we can compare.
I am loving these videos
Hi, I would love to watch the April and May "War and Peace" by Tolstoy Debate, but when I click the link it says the Video is not available.
Your videos make me so happy, Carolyn.
In case you haven't seen it, Eric Karl Anderson paid you some really nice compliments in his latest video!
it is so strange to see the other side of your reading room!!
I miss Long Island. I didn't live there but, as a Queens kid I preferred going east to LI than west to Manhattan.
You can reread it.🙂
"great comet" is a musical. songs are good but adaptation of segment of story, imo, so so.
there is also an actual opera "war and peace " by prokofiev. which mainly cover same segment as musical, though andrei and war are there. not his best work, but its good when well produced..
after reading eugene onegin, check out the movie onegin 1999 with ralph fiennes, liv tyler. imo its good
of course , there is eugene onegin opera by tchaikovsky, one of the greatest operas ever . there are many productions on line for free. but you probably should check out the ny met's production from 2017 with anna netrebko etc with gergiev conducting.
Hello again 🥰 @carolynmariereads
I’m grateful you kindly replied to a previous comment of mine saying you had technical difficulties uploading the war & peace debate, but (all being that you still have it saved somewhere 🤞) I beg that you please please pleeeeeeeease try & reattempt uploading again? There is so much excitement & build up to the ‘debate’ on this video that I’m at just dying to watch it and it pains me to know there is a 3 hour video of Emma & yourself not being shared with world! I beg you… please.. thank you 🥰😂🙈 🤞🙏😩🥴❤
Have you tried Chekov yet? His short stories are wondrous, like Middle March, find great meaning in the "mundane". And, with the exception of his famous plays, his stuff is commonly read, at least by readers in the west.
The Swimmer is a 1968 film directed by Frank Perry and stars Burt Lancaster in his finest performance. It's an adaptation of a short story by John Cheever and is highly recommended for swimmers and land-lubbers alike! Also try to listen to Kate and Anna McGarrigle's version of The Swimming Song...."this summer i went swimming, this summer i might have drowned, but i held my breath and i kicked my feet and i moved my arms around..." Hope the vacation went swimmingly.
Hi! I'm very new to your channel, this video being the second one of yours that I have watched. (I am enjoying your channel, btw!) I just wanted to say that while watching you, I had the strange feeling that you were from LI so cut to my surprised face when you said that you were! haha I'm also from LI so we must be able to sense fellow dwellers I guess. haha
I know Jane Austen’s clothbound pocket sized books I had it as a box set of 6 from Amazon the font was tiny, so is that book war and Pice, Anna Karina, and crime and punishment got the same tiny font the Jane Austen books? Want to read if so I wouldn’t get them but I do want to read war and peace, Anna Karina and crime and punishment one day:
I'm also going to read Pushkin soon🥰 I saw a portrait of Tolstoy in the back, and Lermontov next to him? sorry if there are grammatical errors here😅
когда-нибудь я буду писать по английски без переводчика и с уверенностью, но не сегодня ехехехнх🤚🏻
Главное это попробовать и не бояться 🤍

UK publisher Virago books specialises in feminist, post/feminist fiction with an emphasis on neglected works by female authors. If Persephone pleases (and i'm sure it will!) then i'm sure that Virago will appeal. With thanks and warmest best wishes from ye olde England.
What translation do you recommend?
Give 'Quiet Flows the Don' by Mikhail Sholokhov or 'Dead Souls' by Gogol a try. I could go on and on but I don't want to put you to sleep.
Hi Carolyn.
Pushkin - the is the best - and 5 * for Eugene Onegin - but you need to get a good translation - some are poor -
Alas, I feel Penguin is not the best ! its okay - but try the translation by Tom Beck - ISBN 1-903517-28-1
Also for greater insight get hold of Volume II - Commentary and Index by Vladimir Nabokov ISBN -691019045
Btw. It's pronounced "Oněgin" in Czech. lol
Hey
You are too cute; pay attention to not get trap in the fiction-)
