These guys have been a dream to work with. Just truly kind people who make amazing amps. Hope you all enjoy the video.
Love the amps those guys build. It's just not in the cards for me. Maybe hopefully one day. Ugh
That amp sounds so good! I definitely dig this video!
Dr Z!
My experience as well, just awesome people. I think I'm up to 7 amps and 4 cabs now. Not quite sure how that happened. 😇
Awesome video, thank you!
I bought a Dr Z attenuator and I was so blown away by it that I knew their amps would be amazing and they are…just a killer company.
Loved this idea, grateful to have been a part of it, and happy to have got this amp in the hands of a monster player!
You guys are far to kind. Thank you for taking so much extra time on this so we could share it with everyone. I'm already planning my next Dr.Z amp :).
I enjoyed your proper IPC MIL STD soldering ;)
Also you don't see a lot of tower soldering these days, this is very old school :)
Great video! I used ot work for Audio Note and have worked with a lot of Russian valves, the pins have a coating that may go dull but still conducts very well, spraying them with deoxit is fine but you shouldn't file them as you're actually reducing their life.
Someone has built an amp or two..cool vid!
This is AMAZING! How could one not respect and want a product of this quality and integrity?
I LOVE things like this. As a hobbyist builder it's always so fascinating to me, plus seeing the "smaller shops" is just great.
Why is watching someone build an amp very relaxing? At least it is to me.😎
Spent 26 years in the Electronics Industry as an Engineer! As I said, many activities are difficult if not impossible without the Skills and Training! As I used to tell my Apprentices, when watching me and then saying " well that looks easy" my next line was "OK, try it" they never said it again!
Twenty years ago, I built a dual 6L6 "California Dreaming" amp from scratch: punched and drilled the chassis, mounted components, sockets (ceramic), transforms, orange drop caps, pots, and terminal strips, point-to-point hand wired all... a labor of love... and it worked, too! - in short order I blew out the spare stereo speaker I connected to it! One difference; I checked unloaded filament, grid and plate voltages before inserting the tubes! 🙂Still stored away. A labor of love.
@prajnana Wow that's a lot of work to get that close and not just finish it up, it's a shame that it has been abandoned to storage for so long. Why not bring the amp to a good tech to get the last bits sorted out if you can't figure it out yourself ???
@prajnana, U B interested in selling by chance?
Fabulous video. Glad to see it is handmade. No mess inside either.
Hellz yes .. props to Dr Z for keeping tubes alive 🤘
i mean Dr.Z is of course great to the community but tubes will keep themselves alive.
Tubes are obsolete.
@@vorpalblades maybe you should look up the definition of obsolete.
I'm glad Dr z is still doing his thing
This video was so great! Thanks for putting it together. Makes me want a ZWreck…. Love seeing the care they put into building their amps. And what a cool thing to have a video of your own amp being made by Dr. Z!
Oh Man! This is right in my wheelhouse!!! I repair and build versions of tubes amps!! Fantastic collaboration with “Z” Robert thanks for this video….
Wow. A Dr. Z Maz 18 amp inspired me to explore building my own amps. After about 10 years of trial and error, tweaking and modding, I finally had a build that sounded "as good as a Dr. Z", heh, my opinion of course.
Almost 20 years ago I was at a local blues jam, and someone asked me if I would play through his new amp so he could hear what it sounds like out front. It was a Dr. Z Maz 18.
When I got up to jam with the band, during one tune as I was finishing up a couple takes during my time to solo, the jam master motioned to the sax player to take it. Instead, he said, "no, I want to hear some more of that sweet guitar tone again", and bowed motioning for me to play again. Really, that is what happened, and really, that little amp blew my mind. When you get that kind of tone in the feedback loop between your ears, fingers, and the amp, it really does feel like you can play better. It is more something you feel and not just what you hear. And even with only 18w it cut threw the mix at a jam that would get "stupid loud" at times.
I did a deep dive into Dr. Z amps, and concluded I just couldn't afford the $$, so I started a quest to build my own amps.
I did enjoy learning and building, but the main lesson I learned was, that in the long run, if I had just bought the Dr. Z "I couldn't afford", it would have cost me less $$. Personal amp building is a deep rabbit hole, time, struggle, pain and $$ consuming process.
wow, this is great video showing the craftmanship and attention to details that goes into those amps. Great respect !
Excellent video, Robert! That hand-written log, though... priceless!
Having built a hand wired 5e3 kit myself, it's definitely a process.
Great video! I have Dr. Z Route 66 and I love it. Mike told me to never get rid of it and I won't. Their amps are built like tanks.
Dr Z amps are 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Hell yes! My Route 66 and ‘90s Carmen Ghia are so freaking wonderful. I had played plenty of amps before, but the first strum through my Route 66 about a year and a half ago made me feel like I was on the London scene in ‘66. Lots of players might hate this word, but there’s definitely a certain “mojo” that I haven’t felt in other amps. It’s like they care about and love my guitars. They let the pure voice of my instruments shine, but impart just a bit of their own inherent characteristics without being the “whole” sound. I know there are more models in my future.
Mike was so cool to do this video for you and mentioning you as well. Great video! I love knowing how things are made especially amps, pedals and guitars. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
It was nice to hear the jargon from when I worked at Raytheon from '62 to '66.
Damn Dr Z is way too cool for words. Not to mention the sound Dr Z came up with is staggeringly great. Long live Dr Z! Great collab Robert!
This is really cool. Love videos like this! 👍
You got #700!
Watching him build that amp was awesome. Any video on how this stuff gets built and the care that goes into it, is always fantastic.
Awesome to see him log all the builds with paper and a pen. No computers or spreadsheets…. Just thought that was cool. Thanks Robert! 🤘
Having worked in electronics all my life and started with valves (Tubes)
I still think they are the best for a warm smooth sound that very few solid state
amps can emulate.
As for building them by hand, i was doing that from my early teens including making
the chassis and cabinet.
It is geat to see that some are still doing this, but the prices make your guitar weep!
Very cool video. Very much enjoyed watching the assembly of the amp and how they burn them in and the QA. Really Cool! Thank you Robert.
Amazing. Great idea for a video. The “electronic” side of guitars, pedals and amps has always intimidated the hell out of me. The assembly of something like this amp, is really impressive, but then to think of these guys having the knowledge needed to actually design it, first, is mind blowing. Cool stuff, thanks for sharing.
Great idea. And the build is looking good!
Cool amp build! So cool insideof her and the pride! The tone is great you piaying blues on it sounded so good!
The benefit to a hand wired amplifier, as opposed to a PCB, is that it is vastly easier to repair. A hand wired solid state amp would be just as good as this one, but much more affordable. But people don't want to believe that they wasted their money on snake oil. So, they fool themselves into thinking the tubes are superior, despite the fact that nobody has ever been able to detect the difference in a blind test. It's all marketing to sell something at a premium price.
Depending on the PCB, they may not even have so much if any advantage in repair.
Such a great video, great work Robert.
What a great idea! Here's to you and Dr. Z.
That was awesome! Much love and respect for Dr. Z and his crew! Every time i went to buy one something financially came up and wasn't able. Happy for you Robert! Very cool!
Robert Baker, This made me so happy! I liked and subscribed!
Falling further down the rabbit hole! I love building tube amps. Robert you got to do this on your own!
This is not rocket science .. but, it takes quite a lot to build an amp like that, I have all the knowledge to build pedals and amps I have built amps and currently building pedals, but it´s not enough to have the knowledge, it takes perfection and extreme determination to be able to build such a great amps as Dr Z or any other amp that is built by human hand, when it all comes around its not really expensive to buy a hand built amp for 2-3k. When I build my pedals I spend about a day on each pedal because I start with an empty PCB, also the pedal is tested for about an hour before its packed up and shipped out to the customer. Thank you Robert for sharing this process from such a good and great company as Dr Z, those amps sounds absolutely fantastic.
I know me some rocket scientists.
Dudes ain't touching my amps.
Or my guitars.
Spending all day building a pedal sounds like a lot of time' how much does a pedal sale for?
@@BryanClark-gk6ie 300 Euros at the minimum.
Fascinating to watch. Great video idea. 👍
Very cool to see. Thanks.
I would love to apprentice for these guys👍
Thank you for letting us ride along on your Z Wreck journey, ROBERT! Fantastic! Congratulations Brother!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Z amps have so much definition they force you to play clearer. All notes jump out, right and wrong. Tone wise they are AMAZING 🤩
Used to use them at a high end rehearsal studio. I have an original Z28. Would love to own another one, one day. Z Plus, Nova, Z Wreck, Maz 18jr MKII
Great video Robert. I appreciate you. Keep on rockin brother.
Thanks for that video, Robert. It was different, but very cool. There's something very satisfying about watching a master craftsman go about their work.
This was a great idea. Really enjoyed it. Thank you.
That was pretty rad to watch.
Great video, Robert! This is like guitar ASMR.
Love videos like this. Thanks for sharing.
I would love to do this kind of work.
So cool to see it wired point to point by hand, totally AWESOME! Got to get one now... 👍
Loved this. I did manage to convert a Hammond into Carmen Ghia successfully along with a number of Fender clones. I really enjoy building them but watching a master at work is a real treat and mine do not have that finesse that The Doctor builds into his.
Wow.. Amazing..
Love the concept for this video. Id love to see a Germino or Friedman done
Thx ❤ cool video
Incredibly cool. What an insight, thanks
Really cool, Robert, thanks for an awesome video! ✌️😌🎸
Dr Z seems like such a cool guy. Nice and chill.
Nice video Robert & congrats !!
How cool to see the Master at work! Thank you Robert for making this happen. Sadly, I have only worked on one Dr Z amp ... because they are made so well.
Love this! Hope you can make more vids like this
Im building a trainwreck express right now and the pacific pt has multiple ht taps. 250v and 285 i think. So tempting to add the speed and comfort switch after seeing this.
Outstanding video! Love this!
I very much enjoyed this video, that was really cool when he was scoping the amp signal at 20:25
I've been using Z amps for about 10 yrs. In my opinion they are the best bang for your buck. I have as my man amp an original Prescription.. the amp is 20 yrs old, I've probably played close to 600 shows with in , NEVER FAILED.. they are built like tanks.
I'm a ENGL guy but these bad boys are freaking amazing ,so rich and full
Fascinating!! And that makes not want to build an amp. Thanks to Dr. Z for the video !!! Incredible !!!
Nice playing Robert.
Sounds awesome, you found your grail amp
Great video.
great idea leaving on the hand written knob ID's. stuff like that sells product.
I like nichicon caps, i use them, film caps for coupling and electros for powersupply and also for cathode bypass caps. Never had 1 failure out 1000s of caps.
Great video! Doc is the best……my idea of tone and feel , and what I hear in my head, seems to be precisely what Doc hears, however Doc makes it a reality with his creations! Lucky me, and lucky us……thanks much …..
I have three Dr Z amps, the Z Wreck was my first, a DB4 was my second and a Maz 18, with reverb, was third. Once I had the Z Wreck there was no stopping. I have been playing guitar for 64 years and I have owned or played a huge number of amplifiers and Dr Z, Carr and Tone King are at the top of the heap.😎
Love this!!!
That is awesome! I have a 1972 50 W Marshall and a gentleman I work with resurrected it from the dead almost 20 years ago. Anyway a few months ago I had him put new caps and output tubes in it for me and it's funny the same day you put this video up I lost output from the amp. So I opened it up saw there was a wire disconnected I sent a picture to him ( I call him Dr. Bob) where does this wire go? Unbelievably he was able to tell me where it went just from the picture, so I got my soldering iron out and went to town by the way I forgot to discharge the capacitors so I had arcs and Sparks going on it was fun but scared the crap out of me long story short it's screaming now. But my point is these gentlemen that work on these old tube amps are a Dying Breed. I keep telling Bob that when he retires which will be soon he needs to show me how to work on these old tube amps. I hope he takes me up on the offer, because I'm no spring chicken myself I'm 52 years old. Again great video buddy!
@r1ckg Better the amp is screaming than you. Gotta be careful working with high voltages, dangerous stuff !!!
@@7171jay I hear you!
The z wreck and your glaser bender tele is by far my dream set up
I know you said in your recent video that you were going to play through a tube amp more often and this is sure a nice choice!
What incredible hand craftsmanship and attention to detail, makes the price more that worth it. Also… man those P90’s.
I agree I'd say most companies that do what they do charge way more. If Fender did this they would ask 5 - 6k easy
Building a guitar is one thing, but amps 🤯 Great video!
good stuff
This is very cool. Love me some Z amps. I’m planning on picking up the junior version of the z wreck next month.
Thanks for putting this together, Robert!
Tinning is winning baby!
Tubes got shock tested when he hand hammered that serial number on as I cringed.
The only thing I wish I would have seen was the smoke being pulled away with that fan that should have a tube leading outside pulling the smoke out of the building. I use a dryer vent exhaust hose with a 8" fan that goes to the bottom part of my shed and pushes it outside so none of that is in the area of my lungs. I don't build amps, but I do jewelry and I also solder guitars and basic stuff. Always protect your lungs. But as for this mans amp building skills is awesome!
That's really cool.
Love building amps i got 2 rooms of my house filled with tubes and amps i built, over 5 years ive built and sold some over 200 amps. Im a purest tube amp builder, tube rectifier, cathode bias. Nothing like natural tube sag in overdrive.
I enjoyed the video very much. Thank you very much for explaining solderingblike a pro. I am soldering once in 2 years, mostly with poor results. Hope I will remember next time.
Tremendous idea for a video. I hope you make more requests for similar construction/build videos, for other amps, and also pedals and guitars.
I actually ordered a Novo guitar that I went over the past few months a recorded it being built. It'll be up i na few weeks
Dream Amp man !!
BEAUTYFUL❤
love my remedy
Z Wreck is a great amp! Great video! The Doc Rocks! ✌️
Outstanding!!
Great video, I enjoyed that!
I’ve owned dozens of Z amps. Consistently a great product. The Z Wreck is next level.
Hey Robert .. I really enjoyed this video on how to build your own tube amp .. The only thing is, I more or less followed the instructions in the video, even though I had to substitute a few components, and the amp I built literally sounds not in any way similar .. Do you know if I maybe missed some steps or if maybe the humidify near my workbench might be causing some issues ..?
Fantastic review of dr Z . I wonder how close it is from the train wreck originally made. I loved seeing that priceless care. Care always pay!
Cool video. I love amplifiers more than guitars
I recently got bitten by the amp building bug. As a hobbyist, it's always great to see the pros work.
Cool video. I’d watch more.
I enjoyed his proper IPC MIL STD soldering ;)
Also you don't see a lot of tower soldering these days, this is very old school :)
Something about point-to-point wiring; lots of micro cross-talk, micro changes in impedance, voltage, etc. All those items give an amp a mysterious & desirable personality!
