    H/H match update for 1421 and preview of the week ahead:
    ...
    This is week 285 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455), so there are just *6 more weeks* after this one. These episodes were taped on February 10, 1979 and originally aired from March 26 through March 30 of 1979.
    This week, Brett & Charles are in their places with bright, shiny faces, and they're joined by one beloved semi-regular, one frequent guest panelist, and two new faces who will never have a chance to return:
    ~~~ *Betty White* (last seen in eps 1406-1410) returns for her 75th and final week. Yes, this will be it for one of most beloved semi-regulars! In the H/H, Betty stands at 47.1% (24 matches in 51 attempts).
    ~~~ *Dick Martin* (last seen in eps 1401-1405) returns for his 21st week (of 22 total). This will be his final week in seat #5, because he'll fill in for CNR during the show's penultimate week. In the H/H department, Dick has answered two questions without scoring a match yet.
    ~~~ Last but not least, *Lorna Patterson* and *Foster Brooks* become one-week-only panelists.
    This feels like a shaky week to me. Of course we have Brett and Charles and dear Betty for her final week, so it's definitely worth watching. Dick is alright, but he's not my favorite. And two brand-new faces who won't be coming back. I've been pleasantly surprised before by one-and-done guest panelists, but it feels like no matter which way it goes, it's a little disappointing. If they don't fit in too well, then I can't help but think of all the other great guest stars from the past who could've had one more week in their place. But if they do really well, it's also sad because we'll never see them as panelists again...
    Well, better get used to saying goodbye to old friends. Next week is Nipsey and Joyce's last hurrah. Two weeks after that is Patti's last appearance. And the following week (289) we say farewell to Charles! Those last two weeks without Chuck are going to be tough, I think. The only partial compensation for me will be seeing Orson one last time in week 290.
    *TRIVIA: Undoubtedly the single film featuring the most MG alumni is "Airplane" (1980): We've got: Leslie Nielsen, Joyce Bulifant, Barbara Stuart, Ethel Merman, Jimmie Walker, and Lorna Patterson! (I posted this this before, without mentioning Lorna Patterson.)*
    ~~~Today's action:
    A nice, clean start today, right at the top of a game. Foster's first answer is indeed lousy, but Lorna had the answer I'd thought of, so I have to say it was great! Foster redeems himself on the second question, and no one had my answer ("Women's Prison). By the third question, it really feels like Foster just isn't in tune with game. But that doesn't mean he won't be an entertaining panelist. There have certainly been prior first-seat guest panelists who were similarly out to lunch but still a lot fun - I recall Jim Backus for example, way back in 1973 (episodes 81-85), and others too...
    At any rate, our champion easily wins her second game.
    *Today's audience match question: "It's Only________"*
    My thoughts: (Money, Fair, Love)
    The celebs: Charles (A Paper Moon), Brett (Make Believe), Betty (Money)
    The choice: Money (She listens to the audience - this was clearly their favorite suggestion.)
    The answers: A Paper Moon, Make Believe, Money - Kudos to Betty for coming up with the top answer in third position!
    Our champ's first H/H with Scoey wasn't profitable. Who will she try with today?
    It's Dick. No double.
    Stats: This will be Dick's third shot. He hasn't scored a match yet.
    *Today's H/H question: "In Your_______"*
    (Face? Dreams? Face was my first thought, but it sounds too modern, so I'll go with "Dreams.")
    The champion looks like this one is tough for her. Dick, however, is quickly writing his response. Ding.
    She doesn't seem ready when Gene asks for her $5000 answer. She stalls a bit, repeating the question, which isn't a good sign, but it doesn't mean a good answer won't dawn on her at the last second... Not this time. She says "Life," admitting she can't think of anything. The stress of standing on stage has caused many a champion to draw a blank. The audience groans.
    Dick's not going to say that, but what will he say?
    He wrote "Hat." Okay. (A quick search online indicates this expression is mainly from the period 1920 to 1940, but I don't think it was ever terribly popular.)
    No H/H match today.
    ~~~Here's our standing leader board showing the 13 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she or he has "retired" from the show and their H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, the one with the greater number of matches is considered to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 matches in 4 attempts).
    (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts).
    Joyce Bulifant - 66.7% (4 matches in 6 attempts).
    (*)Debralee Scott - 66.7% (4 matches in 6 attempts).
    Charles - 50.0% (45 matches in 90 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 50.0% (6 matches in 12 attempts).
    Elaine Joyce - 50.0% (3 matches in 6 attempts).
    Betty - 47.1% (24 matches in 51 attempts).
    Fannie - 46.7% (21 matches in 45 attempts).
    (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 matches in 18 attempts).
    (*)Richard - 42.5% (373 matches in 878 attempts).
    Brett - 39.4% (41 matches in 104 attempts).
    (*)Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 matches in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1421, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. (Note: episode 849 was never produced.) These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036. These stats do, however, include results of episodes 1309 through 1317, found on channels other than this one. (For missing episode 1406, the results of the second H/H have been revealed and are included in these stats, but it's unknown which celeb played the first H/H, which was not a match.)
    I forgot how much I liked this show. Mr. Nabokov there. Zing! Coudn't do this today even though almost nobody got it in 79. Only other Nabokov reference I've ever heard was the police. I didn't get it all as a 15 yo in 79.
