Good video. '98 and on XJs had the harder fiberglass & resin headliner boards. Those you can scrub hard or use a wire brush to clean them. My '96 XJ was like yours. It has a pressed fiberglass mat board that had a harder shell that goes against the roof and a raw fiberglass layer that faces the interior. The liner is glued directly to the raw insulating fiberglass. You have to be careful and just use a soft scrub brush like you did. The original fabric was just like what you ordered - a cloth faced foam. The old deteriorated foam layer is what you are actually scrubbing off.
Another way you can tell which type it has is whether it has a speaker bar or not. They made the headline board out of the harder material so they could mount the speakers directly into the headliner board and eliminate the separate speaker bar. Easier manufacturing and assembly, which saved money.
Tip of advice!! DO NOT soak it with the adhesive because if it’s too wet it will not stick!! Light coats and wait a minute so it gets sticky!!
I love how the “hardest part of the whole thing....” isn’t videotaped lmfao
Whats the hardest part?
I watched this video for the first time 11 years ago. Finally time to replace the headliner on my 97. Thanks for the straight forward video!
A DA sander works great for getting the old headliner off and the backing cleaned up. Did probably 500 headlight ers at an upholstery shop. Also, lacquer thinner works great to degrease it before you spray the adhesive down. The better you prep the panel the longer it will last. 3M and DAP make great spray glues for this kind of thing.
It would've been nice to actually see you pull the head liner out and re-install it.
I've had to re-fabric my 1996 XJ headliner a few times and in my 87 Comanche. It's a simple job after you do it a couple times LOL!
Good job. Looks like a lot of work. I think I will use a helper when I do mine.
Great video dude. I'm about to start this on my sisters car but I was hesitant because I've never done it before. U made it seem easy. Thx man
That liner will be sagging in a few days. I have done a few and the canned glue is no good. I used to try to do it myself to save money. The best thing to do the remove and install but have a pro do the fabric and glue.
Great job... Looks excellent
Hell yeah man thanks you just saved me a bunch of money. I don't know why I thought there was way more to it than that.
Great info. Thank you.
Hey what is that rectangle section for at the back in the boot (1:52) - you also have the cables on the side hanging down? My jeep is the exact same - I have a small square light that goes there but why the huge rectangle cut out?
Good job man thanx for the vid
Well done
I appreciated your video. Thank you 😊
Good job !! You made it !
Thanks for saving me a gazillion dollars! And great work
What is that between the visors?
Good stuff man
What kinda seat covers are those?
How did you get your rear dome light and speakers off... mine has the weirdest little clips that cant be unscrewed
can you please tell me ware you got them seat covers please
Good job...
Thanks dude
Nice man thanks this help me with my 92 Cherokee Laredo cuz the ppl are trying to charge me like 300 hundred to replace it so I’m diy
To remove the windshield trim pop out the round plugs, the screws are under them.
How did you remove the dome lights?
I have A 1995 Jeep Cherokee is that hard to put that headliner in please let me know
That thing in the middle is for the TV Remote RF style key fob for remote lock
An extra hint would be to take a hard hand roller and use pressure to bond the of the fabric to the molded headliner. It takes a little more time but the bond is better.
What material is it made of?
At 3:09 he shows the bare interior roof. Thanks, I want to add Dynamat and wondered what it looked like under the headliner.
Thanks for sharing I'm about to have a go at my daughters Cherokee liner , so typical you run out of glue , it's nerve wracking and so hard to judge how much to use to actually have enough to actually finish , cheers big ears
I did the same exact thing to mine today. Literally exact same process as you. Except my material has a donut design lol
How has your headliner held up after 8 years?
Does anyone know of I can reuse the same headliner? mine is jus sagging but it's in pretty good condition.
link for the fabric?
2:20 that 93 or so it is a remote control sensor for keyless entry.
I actually kinda prefer the look of it without any of the liner.
and it makes it a bit more modular too!
I agree - rhino liner on the top would look pretty cool I think.
How many beers did you have before recording this?
Would be nice to know how to remove the trip by the front vents
damn dude thata awesome i had to rip mine off this looks like a new jeep lol
All Cherokees have wiring between the sun visors for an over head temp/lights etc..
that thing that you refer to in your video, is the power lock photo cell for the key FOB.
The thing in between the visors is for a key fob to unlock the jeep from outside without using the key.
Is your name Walter White Jr. by chance?
It's Finn
Exactly what I thought 😭😭
hahaha the sound of that wagon
Thanx! Now ill go ahead and do mine, and save about $400.
How many yards of fabric should a person get when buying fabric.
Too bad you didn't have a torx bit to remove the seat belt holders! But you managed anyway so what the heck.
Good video! ;-)
i bought a new roof, then I cutted the foam, glew it en put in preparated vacuum bag. I suck the air out of the plastic bag and all pussed good te dry the glew
If you don't mind my asking. Did the glue continue to hold or did the new material fall from the old foam eventually? I ask not to be a wise guy but I had issues with the headliner continuing to fall in my wife's Saturn. it seemed like the spray adhesive would start to fail on hot summer days.
its best to use 3m headliner spray glue. Spray the panel and liner then wait before applying. You don't want it wet, you want both sides to be tacky. With light pressure, place the liner to the panel. I used a soft desk brush to lay the liner on. Don't press too hard or you will create indentions. I did my '95 Grand Cherokee 4 years ago and it still looks new. Got the glue at O'reillys
I noticed that people comment here in the comment section and he doesn't reply but yet he wants people to subscribe. Correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen where he's replied to anyone. Great video but damn man REPLY SOMETIMES. I was gonna give it a thumbs up but I don't think he deserves it.
that little black thing is a keyless entry
Use a wire wheel drill attachment, takes seconds to remove the old glue.
Did you let glue/adhesive dry 2-5 min, before you put it on?? Can't tell from the video, and...ALWAYS order two cans of glue !!! otherwise, good job! youtheman=)
bro who many time i most let dry before put it in top?
You meant to type " Bro how much time should I let it dry before reinstalling" I'm guessing your not from this Country. But you speak my language better than I speak yours so don't feel bad. Take some classes will help
cool vid but my jeeps headliner isent needing to be replaced it just has to be re stuck
do you even understand what you are saying?
He talk like Walt jr from breaking bad
Nultari I fucking knew he sounded Familiar!😂
is this where you hide your weed?
The one thing I needed to see was yanking the headliner out .
save the oh shit handles
I paid less than $18 for all men mine has got the soundproofing material
John Green where did you buy the material and how much did you need ?
I love how this guy doesnt even know what hes doing half the time 🤣🤣🤣
Wished you would have shown how the trim pieced came off. So ...your video didn't help with the difficult part. Thanks anyways.
What the hell are you saying! !
Can't you understand him?
I could tell what he was saying just fine.
Looks like a big pain in the ass. I'll take mine to a Mexican and have it done. lol
so this vid is called "how to -installing a headliner in 1984-2001 jeep xj" and COMPLETELY SKIPS THE INSTALL SEQUENCE??
Lamest attempt I have seen in a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long. long time.
Jon Jones Where is your video on how to install a headliner? I didn't think so. Easy to criticize when you are just a YT troll.
