Mid-Kumo invader: mmdks.com/948a Fast-roll setup: mmdks.com/948n Considering how shields and poise are so good in this game, and how you need to be able to one-shot or one-combo to win invasions, I think mid-roll builds might be the new meta. Fast-roll is still fun for duels though. SoulsTube: discord.gg/CxxRKa4
I dunno, I'm wearing the Dark Mask, Wanderer Coat, Elite Knight Gauntlets and Dark Leggings with the Wolf Ring. Nets me 61 poise for Black Flame and decent defenses, so I wouldn't say that you HAVE to look like crap to be efficient in 1. But I'm SL65 so take that as you will. Honestly, I'd rather have dead angling back and remove chainstabs, and make it possible to cancel gestures, sucks that we didn't get that.
Sure, you can make a really good build with non-hideous fashion, but an optimized armor setup will still always be more efficient. I can't make myself use the waistcloth and mom mask either, but I know my build would be better off with them.
Don't take this as me looking down on low-level PvP, but things look a lot differently at meta SL. The great thing about low-level invasions is that you can get away with fashion souls and non-optimal setups because barely anyone has an optimized build when going through the game in NG. As I said however, at SL 125, you run into optimized builds 9 out of 10 times. Sure, you can do the fashion thing there too, but at least when I tried, I had a bad, bad time. Plus, I just really like minmaxing, but I realize that's not for everyone.
Nyff I like min-maxing too, to an extent, but I definitely would rather wear something that looks good than something that is efficient but doesn't. I'm not a big fan of high level PvP, I used to enjoy it, but since joining the SL90 it just feels samey to me. To each their own, though.
You have a good mindset when it comes to PvP and I'm happy that the all out "meta" way of approaching duels/invasions is becoming more and more widespread.
Tbh, when I started playing DkS 1 back in 2012, I was scrubby as all fuck myself. I thought mother mask, waistcloth, bs chaining, etc. were super "cancer" and all that nonsense. After playing Souls PvP for a long time through all of the titles, I've come to see that there is not only nothing wrong with going full meta, but it's actually the most fun you can have. Two scrubs honorably bowing, then walking up to each other and randomly pressing R2 until someone dies is just... mindless. But two (or more) players going at each other with optimized builds using all the means the game gives them is exciting af. At the end of the day though, you will always have new or more "casual" players who will go out of their way to find shit to hate on because they can't beat it. I'm also glad however that a lot of people these days have left those silly self-limitations behind and just enjoy the game to its fullest.
When I started playing the remaster I knew exactly what to make: a Mid-Kumo build. I played this build extensively on the PS3 and it was and it has always been one of the strongest meta builds there. Sad that dead angling is no more, so the potential of this build has suffered a bit, but it is still pretty strong if you know how to hyper-pivot and go for backstabs. Also, with this kind of build you are not supposed to roll really, but rather, as I said, pivot for backstabs and toggle-parries. If you need to roll, remove the armor and gloves and switch to the flip ring. That's my two cents on this. Nice video as always.
Thanks for the little shout-out, Nyff! True to form, I've got a half-dozen low-to-mid level lore invaders planned at the moment. Meta-level invasions/duels in DaS do have some appeal to me, though. Once my lore invaders are all up and running, I'm hoping to make a SL125 invader. But the Fashion Souls, Nyff. My god. I don't know what I'm going to do.
:) Looking forward to seeing what you can make happen at meta SL if fashion is what you're going for. :) I mean, Kali made me a somewhat optimal fastroll setup that doesn't use the waistcloth and mother mask: mmdks.com/94c6. But tbh, I feel like even this doesn't look much better than all the truly optimized setups and just really sacrifices so much efficiency. So I just caved and went full meta. But again, curious how you will be doing things.
I can really relate to you Nyff in terms of being a tryhard. No matter what game I play, I always want to make the most OP/optimal character using what’s in the game just to test the limits of myself and others. And once I hit a wall, with the aforementioned OP character alongside my wealth of knowledge about the game, the game truly becomes thrilling. Can’t you relate?
This is very late, but I honestly can't find a reason to fast roll except for speedrunning. Defense doesn't matter that much in Dark Souls, but not having defense means pretty much everything kills you nearly instantly, unless you sink epic points into HP, and even then, you would still have done better to just get armor. I PVP very little, but I do a ton of PVE. I've done a number of challenge runs. No shield, SL1, Guts, and a number of timed runs. In all of these, I have found the mid roll to be the most useful. You can move, you can dodge, and if you eat a hit, it's not going to lay you out. It's also very very easy to get set up with a very well defended mid roll build, even for very low END. For my SL1, I used a battle ax (+5 lightning), Catarina Set (+5 everything), +15 Balder Shield, RoFaP, and Havel's. I was still mid rolling with that. The Elite Knight Set is also the most broken armor in the entire game; pretty much anyone can get heavy armor protection from it with a mid roll at a fraction of the weight without the stamina penalty. I do use it sometimes for PVE, just for the hilarity of hunting down twink builds and other griefers. And also for being a really helpful summon for other low level players. But what's best is having a mid roll with POISE. In my SL1, I originally took advice about fast rolling... and using weak armors that let me do it just more or less lead to everything either 1shotting me, or stunlocking me on the first hit so I died anyway. Upgrading to a midroll build stopped that problem. When I plaid PVP more, I found that typically being able to take more hits, and not get stunlocked, was usually more helpful than a slightly better dodge. This was especially true for people who loved to spam R1 and normally could do it to more meta light builds. They'd run into my and my tough armor, fail to stunlock me, get parried, and die. I had a series of fights with one guy who was a flippy light build. I won all of them, not because he was bad, but because he had no armor, apart from Havel legs. All I had to do was not give him easy attacks to punish, and exploit his lack of protection to slowly wear him down. He met his death 8 consecutive times to my warpick, high END, and tough armor; I could eat a few hits and still combo him to death, and chase him down when he tried to evade. My personal note about what makes a good or bad PVP weapon is mostly how quickly it attacks. A slower attacking weapon is very easy to punish by blocking, evading, parrying, backstabbing, countering. This is why UGS's and so on are so rarely used; any slightly competent player knows to either give a parry to to roll under the strike and whale on the user. My most successful ever weapon in PVP was a +5 lightning broadsword. And lastly, in defense of low level and non meta invasions, it's part of the Dark Souls experience to get invaded, that little extra surprise challenge that breaks up the fixed monotony of bots always being the same every time. You get to be the part of someone's run, a great gaming memory, especially if they're new and you let them have a duel rather than just grief them. I also find invading non meta people to be more interesting. Meta gets hung up on minmaxing, fashions, and so on. You invade PVE players and you find all kinds of interesting things. A knight with a whip in his left hand and a morning star in his right, a pyromancer with a love of crossbows, and so on. It's far more interesting to fight people with their unique setups than fighting 15 giantdads in a row, only broken up by flipping katanas and mages. Tschuss.
Welcome to the Kumo club brotha! Kumo Pyro is one of my beloved build. I was rocking the Stone Greataxe for a long time as a Str char. 2HR2 catches so many players off guard! Exzellentes video. In invasions gibts keine Regeln und keine Ehre, nur den Tod! Kaathe wäre stolz! EDIT: 11:40 the lag switch returns.
Good shit mate, it's so nice to hear some positivity from the community about the remaster, I have a laundry list of "ease of life" changes I wish they made for this but in all honesty the re-invigorated community and improved connectivity is well worth the price of admission for me! Try-harder gonna try, twinkers gonna twink and gankers gonna gank, it's Dark Souls tradition at this point and I have learned to embrace it all. Its all Dark Souls all the time and I fucking love it!
Bro the moment i saw your video on my recommend i instantly thought about the saint riot quote and the fact you also mentioned that in the video made me enjoy this even more good shit my boi
gtabro1337 This is just how Dark Souls 1 works, it should also be said that Dark Souls 1 has a ton of pvp techs centered around backstabs, you probably noticed that he takes no damage in some of the backstabs right ? You can even roll out of them, toggle out, backstep etc, It is deeper then it looks but I would recommend you actually watch a video explaining it. So no, they are not " scrubs " . Dark Souls 1 came out 7 years ago, it was clunky and still is clunky, this is a remaster not a remake with the gameplay of 2 and 3. They removed a few pvp bugs but overall, this is Dark Souls 1. I prefeer pvp in 2 and 3 overall, but 1 is still fun.
Oh well like lil buddy said this is basically what ds1 players are they just don’t know how to have 1v1 fun duels they are just constantly going for that backstab with a great club with sunlight blade for that quick one shot just pretty great its very rare for me to find someone who is actually trying to have a fun 1v1 this guys build on the video is nothing original this build has been around for so long and thats the type of build you see everyone using NO ONE IS ACTUALLY TRYING TO HAVE FUN they are just trying to get quick easy kills like it even matters.
Gabz Fun is subjective, you cannot really say they are not having fun because you are not them, sure it might not be fun for you personally, but still. This is not a 1v1 video, he makes that clear. 1v1 though is different and there are tournaments that are worth looking at, backstabbing is still a major vital thing to learn and it has a lot of rules you need to work with.
DecoyBlackMage I’m already aware of all the tricks about backstabbing and can avoid it but I will rarely have a 1 v 2 or 3 and literally in most of my 1v1s its just people trying to go for that backstab I like to see a variety in combat I like seeing people use jumping attacks, running attacks, backstep attacks, strong attacks prople trying to parry when they know it’s a good time and not miss 20 parry attempts and finally parry me after I hate fighting people who are constantly trying to get backstabs or just literally grab their little falchion with darkmoon blade or gold tracer and just spam r1s like wtf are you even doing? I refuse to believe people that do that are actually having fun in the game do they not know that curved swords are easy to parry? Jesus I see no originality from the souls fanbase and the worst thing is this man comes in and literally shows us the same meta that we’ve seen 8 years ago like hes actually showing something? As for the tournaments yeah I agree whenever I see one that actually have good rules I try to join.
Gabz I do think your being a bit over zealous here, no offence meant with that, having passion about something is not a negative. But this is the first game, so the things learned from DS2, DS3 and Bb do not really apply here, and I think a lot of people where expecting it to be different, but if we get a DeS remaster it will pretty much be the same there, overall the first games are very limited in things you could do unlike DS3 and DS2 where you have so much variation to work with, hard to fully count Bb, because the developers did not intend duels at all to be a thing, we are hunters here to hunt after all :)
I've recently adopted this same strat, but with the great scythe. Whereas most would see it as necessary to fast roll with such a weapon, mid rolls are actually a good option. Because of the extra reach on the weapon, poise helps it a lot. On top of that, the preemptive sprint on the two handed running and strong attacks are not affected by weight, so you can still comfortably close distance. I use the full dark set with the black iron chest and wolfs ring for maximum edge and poise, and oh boy. The build is a monster. Or a reaper, rather
Funnily enough I feel like Mid Kumo received a bit of a nerf in the remaster due to removal of ghost strikes and dead angles, as well. Previously you could ghost or dead angle with that weapon incredibly effectively. Especially ghosts. Being able to hit through shields from that far away and for that much damage was amazing. That said, it's still a very, very strong build and nothing the devs do will likely change that. Kumo length, moveset, and damage are all still there and that's all it needs. I think that's a build that will remain relevant for the rest of the life of this game. I've been using Regen QFS myself which sort of become my main towards the end of PtDE, and that's probably been hit even harder by the removal of dead angles and ghosts, though. Still a really fun and pretty good weapon. With FaP+Havel I fast roll in full 77p Giants, with FaP+Hornet I can mid roll and fish or turtle if need be, or I can drop to 42p all while still being able to swap Demon's Spear on if I need to range and chip. In 1v1s it's a surprisingly usable and fun build, and with Replenishment it can trade pretty well with a lot of weapons (especially if you equip Ring of the Sun Princess before casting). The only real big issue is the lack of crit damage, which can become very apparent in some 2/3v1s. Also it can't 2h Stone Greatshield when people TWoP + WoG which is always a sad time :( mmdks.com/951d and mmdks.com/951e
Ye, dead angles and ghost hits being gone sucks big time. However, as I said in the video, for invasions, it's not that big of a deal. Still a shame though.
Fuck yea! I don't know you, never seen your videos. But this guy knows what the fuck is up. The remaster is exactly what I wanted. I bought the original Dark souls on release in 2011 with the collectors edition strategy guide and tin case. They left the game alone, made it run better, look better, dedicated servers, higher player PvP count, huge playerbase. I'm loving it and anyone who wants to cry a damn river can stop playing at any point in time. Nice video.
Also, after looking at your mid roll setup I have a few questions: 1) Why 77 poise and full giants? I get that 76+ poise allows you to poise thru a UGS R1, but why is that important exactly? You don't really want to trade with UGS anyways because depending on who swung first you could still get stunlocked and be forced to toggle. You don't need to tank a UGS hit to backstab them either - you can block BS or roll BS and parrying UGS is really easy too. 2) Why Black Flame over Great Combustion? I don't think this is a bad choice or wrong or anything, just wanted to know. 3) I have used something closer to mmdks.com/9b69 previously and I have to say, I didn't really miss having 76 poise over 62. I did REALLY like having the extra spell slot and 130 more HP though (I often just had Black Flame/GC in both slots although Fire Tempest can be strong against ganks with good positioning). Having played quite a bit with 3pc Giant's and 77 poise with only one spell slot, did the extra poise help that much or do you think you'd have rather had another spell slot and a bit more HP? Your giant's build does have about ~25 more slash defense but IDK if that and the poise would be worth losing the spell slot and 130 hp.
1) Just because I can. Plus, in invasions (I don't use the build for duels) you want as much poise as possible imo. 2) Black Flame does more poise damage (60) than Great Combustion (40), so you have a greater chance to stun people with it.
I don't know if you'll answer but what weapons would you consider viable with a mid roll build? I've only played the original for a bit when it was released but sunk like 200h into the remaster. A lot of invasions, but mostly a combo of fastrolling small leather shield / chaos uchi, sometimes the claymore. Are there any other weapons besides the kumo (god forbid the tracer/falchion spam) that could work with a mid roll poise build?
Why wouldn't I answer? Good weapons for mid-roll builds beside the Kumo are Chaos Blade, Estoc and Pike. For duels that is. For invasions, I'd recommend the Kumo over all of those choices tho. Maybe a good backstab stick like Great Club or Zwei could work too.
Low level invasions are my jam. Nothing gets me as excited as when I invade a squad of 3 dudes and have to figure out how to either kill the host or pick them off. Especially in Sens fortress. I'm not so cruel that I'll ruin a new player's experience by stomping them with a +15 weapon, I like carrying around weaker weapons in case I happen to run into someone who obviously has no idea what they're doing. I've never really looked into doing meta level invasions and such because it all seems really samey to me, where as I like a lot of variety and just kinda using what's fun. But if a mid roll build can be good then surely I can find something fun and do some meta level stuff. Good video friend!
so true for me. i walk through the game and i invade where i am as long i have red eye orbs. its just so much more fun than all these pimped mathematical builds clashing into one clone after another
I was focusing more on what he was talking about not his build. My friend was using a build that was fast rolling and demon great machete which is slow and because he has no armor gets eaten alive in pvp. I myself has experience with every weapon in the game and recommended better weapons to my friend but he is pretty set on this weapon he has. I also wouldn't recommend dual wielding in this game since its really not viable. Also all the armor in this game is ugly so...
I run a SL 110 with 55 str, full giants +5 and demon's great machete. 90% of the people invading me go for backstabs because they see me midrolling, but because I have such high defence it doesn't really hurt me when I'm backstabbed and I just start freehand swinging as soon as I get up. Tends to mess them up if they're trying to chain me and I can 2 hit most invaders with my high AR. If they try to circle me I just keep freehanding and as long as the netcode isn't fucked, they will die trying to go for that backstab. Feels good to be a tank...
Fast rolling was required for pvp back then? I never recall using a fast roll build and was commonly wiping the floor with people in the forest (as a solo host, not an invader). Dont remember what armor id wear but id use the DS Spear I honestly never knew fast rolling was "required" back then
You said that you would change the build if you were to focus more on dueling. What should I change about the build if I wanted to make a mid-kumo duel build?
You would have less endurance (and spend the points in vitality instead) and go for 61 poise instead of 76. So, the build would be 55 vit, 10 att, 40 end, 28 str, 45 dex. You would use Mother Mask, Giant Armor, Steel Gauntlets and Cleric Leggings, Heater Shield instead of Grass Crest and Dagger instead of Tracer. That would be far more optimal for duelling purposes.
Poise against Curved swords is kind of a bad thing, since if you poise through the 1st hit but get hit the 2nd time, unless its QFS, you get stuck in a infinite stun lock that you cant toggle out of.
If you're going up to ng+, I'd pick up another grass crest and make it fire, I don't remember where I saw that but I quite like the idea against a lot of builds with low stamina damage attacks and combusts. It seems like a bit of a trade-off between getting that bit of extra stamina fast with stability on dragon crest or playing the long game with grass crest when if the match has a slow pace and you avoid receiving burst stamina damage that the stability would otherwise save you from. What I think may put the fire-gss ahead of dcs as opposed to being slightly worse is of course that you can 2h and get the benefit. I haven't played much with it myself as I tend to use small leather for fashion and because it's light enough not to be a waste when I barely use it, but I'll try it on a more knightly looking character.
They had a golden opportunity to fix this game and remove the Oneshot Backstabfest that it was at dueling levels, and they preferred to install DSFix and call it a Remaster. Making Backstab work like DS3 ones and give omnidirectional roll on lock-ons would have made for a much less boring pvp experience.
That's funny, my build is a mid kumo with a ninja flip & Chaos Blade option too. I've still a lot to learn as I've always played with a fast roll build, infact I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how to deal with the chaos blade using a mid-kumo build
Hey Nyff, Very nice video. I checked out the build and I'm curious, why the 45 dex? the bonus damage from the extra 5 dex is tiny and extra 5 vit sounds like a better choice
As I said in the video, it's for max cast speed for Black Flame (cast speed scales with dex and caps at 45). You can combo a kick into Black Flame and roll-catch reliably with Black Flame with max cast speed.
I'm running a ninja fliping giant dad build at the moment but I can't wear the gauntlets otherwise I'd needed probably 99 endurance. I'm really considering changing the ninja flip to wolf ring, with that I'd have a fastrolling ~100 poise build with 680 AR
That's pretty overkill haha, normal giantdad would be better than the wolf version, but flipping with an elemental zwei can be fun lol, you'd have that ringslot for hornet in case you don't want to deal with someone's shit. And if you're going for optimization (You're probably playing a themed build), put on mask of the mother and take points out of vit to put them into end for the added weight, you end up with more hp as well as the option to switch it out for crown of dusk when that hp is gone anyway. It's so weird to me that MoF isn't better on an end-gouge
That's basically my Mage Knight build. Mid-Heavy Armor (like Catarina or Crystal) with a Catalyst and a Lightning Weapon. Does tons of damage with very few resistances. FAP and Hornet Ring are a given.
I agree, I've been saying this for years. Not that I am always midrolling but the poise and defense trade-off you make kind of tips it over, especially if you're going to be using the kumo
I'm slowly getting up to SL125, Ring of Favor and Havel's with mask of the child, chester's coat, black iron gauntlets, and Havel's leggings, still able to fast roll. But I'm now wondering if I should just dis the Havels and do mid rolls
That setup gives you 46 poise which doesn't make much sense, and it doesn't even have an open ring slot. If I were you, I'd seriously consider going either 32/36/41 poise fastroll with an open slot or 61+ poise with either Havel's ring for fastroll or Hornet with midroll. Also, Child Mask is garbage, the only mask that gives a worthwhile bonus is Mother.
Your last statement is objectively untrue. In the same way that you swapped to Crown of Dusk after taking damage, characters without attunement slots can swap to the Mask of the Child to increase stamina regen. Ask any old DS1 tryhard.
Nice to see you! I did enjoy the video very much. Especially because i love the idea of a mid-roll build rather than a f.r. one, and imo can work really well against gankers. When you talk about the people who are judging you to play only meta without fashion etc... let them talk, there is always someone against your ideas, dont listen to them. My pov is that noone should tell the others the way to play or enjoy a game because that is a personal thing. I rather prefer (pvp talking) invasions and my fun is not in meta and duels (even if i play them time to time). But I love to see others playing the way they play you know? And sharing the experience. So thats why I enjoy your content even if I dont play the way you play, because I find it interesting anyways! In the end, I think they could have done much better for this remastered, I love the new particles effects and stuff but there is too much work not done imo (like the almost 2d trees and the old textures stretched). And yeah, its still fun because ds1 IS fun. :) Cheers, keep up the good work 👌
It can get annoying when you keep facing people who's playstyles aren't compatible with your own, but I love seeing all the different ways to play what is probably my favorite game at this point. There's also plenty of cool tricks to learn from tryhards even if you're not gonna employ them to their fullest potential yourself, check out Kali for example :D
Unfortunately, I'm not playing Souls games anymore and haven't been since 2018. Also, there are plenty of guides on the existing Souls games out there, so I wouldn't really have anything to add.

I don't know if I'm the best person to learn from seeing as I have much catching-up to do as well. But I will certainly keep making videos. Absolutely loving the game so far. I hope you do too.
IMO in the remaster midroll is EVEN BETTER than in vanilla DS1 - and midroll kumo was an absolute beast in vanilla DS1. There's a surprising amount of situations where midroll actually allows you to punish mistakes easier and it just has a ton of raw power because Murakumo is an absolute monster in this game. I used a fastroll flip chaos blade build for invading for a while and while I did OK with it the endless gold tracer and Falchion builds would just ruin me - one mistake and it's a gamble on whether latency will allow me to toggle before I'm dead. Started running a version of this build and OH JESUS it's so much better. Midroll takes a bit of getting used to but it allows you so many more options since 50% equip load is so much more forgiving than
I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing but this is essentially hiding behind a mid shield while bs fishing. Meh..not rly a surprise it’s strong with the removal of dead angles
Sorry, but that's not going to happen. And let me assure you that you wouldn't enjoy watching that at all. I'm super OCD about picking up everything, I take a lot of time for everything, etc. Plus, I wouldn't have enough to talk about in a ~10 hour playthrough.
I have a mid-level character with good poise. He's working quite well, and I like his style. Hes a mid-fast roller, but his ring slots are taken up by the F&P ring and Havel's, so that's a downside. He works just fine, and does fine in both PVP and PVE. Midrolls in this game are fine because poise is a thing. Poise is a good thing.
It happens when both players backstab each other roughly at the same time. The player who presses R1 last can roll out of the backstab and then BS his opponent who is stuck in the BS animation.
Do you honestly think most of the people playing the remaster know about midroll kumo? They don't. 95% of players think that anything other than fastroll is crap in PVP. Midroll kumo is well known in the tiny community of dedicated DS1 players... all 50 of them.
It is an interesting commentary on Souls games in general that we're sitting here 7 years out from the release of DS 1, and try-hard duelists are STILL figuring out new ways to duel. Not sure if the mid-roll Kumo is an actual new discovery, or if it is a simple evolution of the rock, paper, scissors game (as certain styles become popular, other counters grow in popularity).
Midkumo (and midroll builds in general) have been a thing for quite a few years now apparently. Definitely nothing new. It's just new to me, since I stopped playing this game pretty much entirely after DkS 2 came out.
-be me -reverse hollowing to summon assistance from others -gets invaded in seconds -person is hardo and way over my soul level -dies -continues to solo the game on offline mode
Thank you for making this video, I really appreciate it. My friend and I STILL have debates over the curved greatswords. By the way incase you didnt know, Gravelord is the worst in the long run. We'd optimize tanky dead angling CGS characters and make them really OP. I like your build a lot, and I see youre saying your build is more for invasions. I can see tho, that you are using a +15 Marakumo. Now I am not judging you by any means, but if youre not going to weapon buff then there is next to no reason for it to be normal (+15). The damage output is great, but in a build where you want to have as much variety as you possibly could, I would go Chaos +5 and have 10 soft humanity. That, or go Lightning +10 and use a Chaos +5 curved sword in your left hand. Parry with the L2, L1 for that tiny bit of fire damage, R1 for riposte with Hornet Ring does amazing amounts of damage (NOTE: this combo only works on people with heavier armor, and works better in duels). Now, if you WANT to use +15 but dont want to put skills into Int/Fth, then I'd suggest making your build revolve around poison. Poison mist is VERY good at zoning your opponents (may be hard to set up when theres gank squads) and using the poison throwing knives through the poison can get you some free poison build up. A long with that, you can use other pyro's like Acid Surge for the same blinding effect. Add some Rotten Pine Resin onto your +15 Marakumo and youre booming!!! Works well with Charcoal, if you wanna make it fire based. Thanks for taking time to read this (if you did) and happy invading!
You can lightroll with 61 poise and a kumo just fine, there's really just no good reason to midroll. That goes quadruple if you're doing forest stuff past 125. A flip can help you a lot more with turtles than a banana sword with grass crest will.
Because SL 125-135 is the SL meta of this game. But the lower you are, the better for invasion activity, so invading at SL 99 is certainly not a bad idea. Except for the fact that you will run into lots of players with 25+ levels more than you have.
Nyff I might just level up then. Also what weapons other than curved great swords have infinite stun? I know the claymore use to but it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
Curved swords do, ultra great swords do too, Halberd has infinite hitstun, and there might be more. I wouldn't count on that too much tho, as time progresses, more and more players will learn how to toggle-escape.
Claymore doesn't, but it does still have running R1 => R2 => R1 true combo (if they stagger on your running R1) and you can true combo R1 => R2 and vice versa. Still a really strong weapon IMO.
Ah, how I've missed Backstab Souls. I used to do pretty well on the original with a Flamberge and Darkmoon Blade/Wrath of the Gods but now I can't hit anyone for shit. The only weapon I seem to do well with for now is the Winged Spear.
I didn't know what a brandon build was until you just mentioned it and i checked it up, and it seems like my custom build in really close to that, so sorry for any incovneviences if i was part of your toxic experience :
Omg Nyff made a video using the build I had planned on using, now I can't!!! Jk, mid-kumo is tons of fun. Pre-release I theorized that it would be the best build for me to win invasions with, and everything I've seen does support that theory. Now I just gotta get my ass off enjoying SL65 invasions so much and actually finish that build...
It has pros and cons. You get more activity, but you will run into SL 125+ players a lot. And those extra 35 to 45 (or more) levels really make a difference. Only at SL 125 do soft-caps kick in, enabling you to take on even max players without much disadvantage.
if you mean an invader build 80-90 would work in ds3 but here it is too high for New Game (you would be mostly invading people starting NG+). For invading end game areas in NG 60-70 is a better SL to stop at.
Mid-Kumo invader: mmdks.com/948a
Fast-roll setup: mmdks.com/948n
Considering how shields and poise are so good in this game, and how you need to be able to one-shot or one-combo to win invasions, I think mid-roll builds might be the new meta. Fast-roll is still fun for duels though.

how did you walk out of the backstab at 6:50 ?

Midroll best roll. Glad to see you back at it and having fun! Keep it up!
What is mid roll?
69 likes my man it is meant to be
I dunno, I'm wearing the Dark Mask, Wanderer Coat, Elite Knight Gauntlets and Dark Leggings with the Wolf Ring.
Asetoni 137 Oh yeah, I'm not denying that.
Nyff I like min-maxing too, to an extent, but I definitely would rather wear something that looks good than something that is efficient but doesn't. I'm not a big fan of high level PvP, I used to enjoy it, but since joining the SL90 it just feels samey to me. To each their own, though.
this comment gave me cancer
Hey Nyff!
I mean, Kali made me a somewhat optimal fastroll setup that doesn't use the waistcloth and mother mask: mmdks.com/94c6. But tbh, I feel like even this doesn't look much better than all the truly optimized setups and just really sacrifices so much efficiency. So I just caved and went full meta. But again, curious how you will be doing things.
Damn i love this. no whining no bullshit. Interesting commentary with entertaining+informative clips "German efficiency" as you put it.
Great to see you back man! Everything you said is so spot on, can't wait for more. Cheers!
Tschuss.
Great comment. I may be starting to change my zealous attempts to always be fast rolling. The mid-roll gives me options that fr doesn’t. Hmmmm.
Good to have you back Nyff
Welcome to the Kumo club brotha! Kumo Pyro is one of my beloved build. I was rocking the Stone Greataxe for a long time as a Str char. 2HR2 catches so many players off guard!
Exzellentes video. In invasions gibts keine Regeln und keine Ehre, nur den Tod! Kaathe wäre stolz!
EDIT: 11:40 the lag switch returns.
Hell yeah, this is the Souls content I need. Looking forward to more.
I know practically zero about DS1 pvp so it's awesome your gonna be uploading some ruthlessly efficient goodness. I'll give the mid rolls a bash!
tealeaf it's really fun to play and a solid build overall
This whole video is people waiting to backstab each other like absolute scrubs
The definition of cancer
gtabro1337 This is just how Dark Souls 1 works, it should also be said that Dark Souls 1 has a ton of pvp techs centered around backstabs, you probably noticed that he takes no damage in some of the backstabs right ?
Calls people a weeb, but using a murakumo.
『冬』Elly Yuria stfu weeb
dark souls itself is a japanese game lulz
I've recently adopted this same strat, but with the great scythe. Whereas most would see it as necessary to fast roll with such a weapon, mid rolls are actually a good option. Because of the extra reach on the weapon, poise helps it a lot. On top of that, the preemptive sprint on the two handed running and strong attacks are not affected by weight, so you can still comfortably close distance. I use the full dark set with the black iron chest and wolfs ring for maximum edge and poise, and oh boy. The build is a monster. Or a reaper, rather
Glad to see an upload. Can’t wait for more content, love and miss your beautiful voice and I’m excited for more of your opinions and gameplay
I'm not a fan of Souls PvP but your response was heartfelt, rational and frank. I love it
Funnily enough I feel like Mid Kumo received a bit of a nerf in the remaster due to removal of ghost strikes and dead angles, as well.
Also it can't 2h Stone Greatshield when people TWoP + WoG which is always a sad time :(
mmdks.com/951d and mmdks.com/951e
Ye, dead angles and ghost hits being gone sucks big time. However, as I said in the video, for invasions, it's not that big of a deal. Still a shame though.
I'm really curious to see how the change will affect these mid-roll hornet kumo/pike builds

Nice video.
best words: 'winning is all that matters'
"You come to me for ruthless German efficiency."
It's true, Saint is our Flavour King.
Love the make them suffer intro. Keep up the good work!
Also, after looking at your mid roll setup I have a few questions:
1) Why 77 poise and full giants?
Amazing video dude, I already thought that fast roll not so viable, but doubted this
Low level invasions are my jam. Good video friend!
so true for me. i walk through the game and i invade where i am as long i have red eye orbs. its just so much more fun than all these pimped mathematical builds clashing into one clone after another
Great video as always Nyff
Thx m8! Long time no see. Hope you're doing well?
yea been good my dude, we'll have to play sometime
Anytime man, just hmu on steam. Don't expect too much tho, still rusty af.
I think my friend needs to see this, he’s been frustrated with his build for pvp and I think this might inspire him and get ideas for his build
Good video I use mid kumo Havel mom and it's great nice to see ya back
I run a SL 110 with 55 str, full giants +5 and demon's great machete.
Excellent opening intro song!
Nice vid
Fast rolling was required for pvp back then?
I never recall using a fast roll build and was commonly wiping the floor with people in the forest (as a solo host, not an invader). Dont remember what armor id wear but id use the DS Spear
I honestly never knew fast rolling was "required" back then
You said that you would change the build if you were to focus more on dueling.
You're the fucken best man, thanks for replying.
Poise feels good especially when curved swords do around 30 poise DMG throw a wolf ring on boom 40 poise
6:18 blocking with weapons is some of my favorite defensive play
Poise against Curved swords is kind of a bad thing, since if you poise through the 1st hit but get hit the 2nd time, unless its QFS, you get stuck in a infinite stun lock that you cant toggle out of.
Three Inch Grinch huh good knowledge ty sir I want to test this
Sandman lol
Why are you using green blossoms when you have the grass crest shield?
subbed just because you used Make Them Suffer - Widower as your intro
They had a golden opportunity to fix this game and remove the Oneshot Backstabfest that it was at dueling levels, and they preferred to install DSFix and call it a Remaster.
Making Backstab work like DS3 ones and give omnidirectional roll on lock-ons would have made for a much less boring pvp experience.
I’m planning all my builds at soul level 130. Is it too high?
That's funny, my build is a mid kumo with a ninja flip & Chaos Blade option too.
I've still a lot to learn as I've always played with a fast roll build, infact I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how to deal with the chaos blade using a mid-kumo build
“I seek a challenge” just circle hornets everyone
The Murakumo has always been a favorite of mine. Underrated!
it was good in 2013 also. did you even play?
haha truuu
Hey Nyff, Very nice video.
I checked out the build and I'm curious, why the 45 dex? the bonus damage from the extra 5 dex is tiny and extra 5 vit sounds like a better choice
As I said in the video, it's for max cast speed for Black Flame (cast speed scales with dex and caps at 45). You can combo a kick into Black Flame and roll-catch reliably with Black Flame with max cast speed.
Ohhh, thanks for the answer. I must've missed that part. Thanks for explaining!
so, how would you build for duelling? as opposed to invading
"Stun infinitely" is the most beautiful phrase in this video.
My build is pretty weird in general, low str and dex, 40-ish vitality and 66 endurance. Just wanted to try that out, pretty fun also in PvE
Possibly
That's basically my Mage Knight build. Mid-Heavy Armor (like Catarina or Crystal) with a Catalyst and a Lightning Weapon. Does tons of damage with very few resistances. FAP and Hornet Ring are a given.
I never got to experience the height of pvp, picked it up just a few months after it started dying down, now it's time to rise!
I agree, I've been saying this for years. Not that I am always midrolling but the poise and defense trade-off you make kind of tips it over, especially if you're going to be using the kumo
What is that intro song? It sounds super familiar
Make Them Suffer by Widower.
Can you tell me the name of the song used in the ending of the video?
It's "Arpitanian Lands" by Enisum.
Nyff many thanks
Why Dragon crest should over black knight sheild for fire defense?
Black Knight Shield is awesome, but 6 units of weight is just too much to fit it into my build.
How viable do you consider mid rolls in PVE?
My only confusion is why are you not 2 handing that kumo?
Cheers, keep up the good work 👌
It can get annoying when you keep facing people who's playstyles aren't compatible with your own, but I love seeing all the different ways to play what is probably my favorite game at this point. There's also plenty of cool tricks to learn from tryhards even if you're not gonna employ them to their fullest potential yourself, check out Kali for example :D
Could you please make a tips and tricks for new PVP invaders?
Unfortunately, I'm not playing Souls games anymore and haven't been since 2018. Also, there are plenty of guides on the existing Souls games out there, so I wouldn't really have anything to add.
@@Nyffenschwander Then could you suggest some channels that have good vids for DS1?

@@Nyffenschwander Thanks, I appreciate the help.
Whats the meta pvp soul level? 120?
yeah im loving the remaster, you can never try too hard to be an invader
Man I have so much to learn. Pls keep the informative videos coming.
I don't know if I'm the best person to learn from seeing as I have much catching-up to do as well. But I will certainly keep making videos. Absolutely loving the game so far. I hope you do too.
Nyff I am enjoying it so far. It is much slower and more deliberate than DS 3. Combat feels more like chess and less like table tennis.

Would u consider uploading a playthrough ?
Sorry, but that's not going to happen. And let me assure you that you wouldn't enjoy watching that at all. I'm super OCD about picking up everything, I take a lot of time for everything, etc. Plus, I wouldn't have enough to talk about in a ~10 hour playthrough.
Nyff i get it like that sort of stuff but a doubt many other people would so fair enough
3:42 how tf did she flip like that
I have a mid-level character with good poise.
Your roll speed depends on your weapon. For example weapons like estoc and kumo do well on mid, but other weapons like claymore do better on fast/flip
Oh boy. Now I need a list of weapons and best roll type.
How do you backstab escape?
It happens when both players backstab each other roughly at the same time. The player who presses R1 last can roll out of the backstab and then BS his opponent who is stuck in the BS animation.
Boy that widower intro is lit!!!!!!!!!!!!
That Make Them Suffer intro though
I played a lot pvp in og dark souls with a midroll build and it was quite efficient as I was able to trade with almost everyone and had op shield.
I always used midroll back in 2013, never thought I had a disadvantage going up against fastroll players. (Maybe a little against Flip ring)
Twf you're a whole 3 years behind the meta and release a video thinking you've found something amazing
Lmao exactly the worst thing is he is proud of this cancer build he got going on there.
Do you honestly think most of the people playing the remaster know about midroll kumo? They don't. 95% of players think that anything other than fastroll is crap in PVP. Midroll kumo is well known in the tiny community of dedicated DS1 players... all 50 of them.
I have no idea who you are, but I agree.
did any of you actually watch the video?
Has a beer... tells life story
-be me
-reverse hollowing to summon assistance from others
-gets invaded in seconds
-person is hardo and way over my soul level
-dies
-continues to solo the game on offline mode
Does your characters from Dark souls 1 transfer to the remastered version ?
It does not.
You can lightroll with 61 poise and a kumo just fine, there's really just no good reason to midroll. That goes quadruple if you're doing forest stuff past 125. A flip can help you a lot more with turtles than a banana sword with grass crest will.
Can I ask why level 125? I’ve always invaded at level 99 and it’s pretty consistent.
So basically it’s poise backstabs... bleh
that intro is nuts, im pretty sure ive heard it in a song XD
I swear to god this sounds very similar to giant dad. But uniquely different.
Ah, how I've missed Backstab Souls. I used to do pretty well on the original with a Flamberge and Darkmoon Blade/Wrath of the Gods but now I can't hit anyone for shit. The only weapon I seem to do well with for now is the Winged Spear.
Greatscythe fastroll on sl60 still works perfectly
Why do I sometimes read your name as Yiff instead of Nyff?
its a low skill high reward build?
what is the Meta SL anyways?
Current meta SLs are 50 / 100 and 125. 125 is high end pvp. min-max builds
The only thing I'm baffled about is how they some how added more bugs than they fixed
I didn't know what a brandon build was until you just mentioned it and i checked it up, and it seems like my custom build in really close to that, so sorry for any incovneviences if i was part of your toxic experience :
Nothing wrong with your build, dude. And there's noting toxic about the experience. I just wanted to paint a picture of how it is at meta SL.
I for one am happy with the remaster. I'm glad they didn't try to make it into DS3.
I knew I couldn’t be the only one who does this.
SL99 fast roll with Steel Armor is my only build tbh
5:45 how do you not take dmg wtf?
Backstab cancel. We both backstabbed each other at the same time because of latency.
lmao intresting
What if I stick around lvl 80 or 90 for a build?
It has pros and cons. You get more activity, but you will run into SL 125+ players a lot. And those extra 35 to 45 (or more) levels really make a difference. Only at SL 125 do soft-caps kick in, enabling you to take on even max players without much disadvantage.
if you mean an invader build 80-90 would work in ds3 but here it is too high for New Game (you would be mostly invading people starting NG+).
For invading end game areas in NG 60-70 is a better SL to stop at.
Lord Drago of Kronstadt I see the problem is that I screwed up and gave the Lord vessel to frampt so I gonna have to go to ng+ anyway.
