@@ZeroTo60Tube you realize you could do the same build just use a donor shell M3 or standard 3. 8hp and make a build that is as cost effective as possible now that he has done so much testing you would have an excellent knowledge base to go from. You pull that off and you'll be in the history books. The e46 with a modern BMW powerplant= perfection !!!

I nearly had a Heart attack when I saw there was a new video!!! YAY!! Here's Hoping and Praying you are able to really come back and surpass. But I reserve any other thoughts for another time. Wow I have almost everything it would take to make this car. Well as far as the cars and engines go anyway. But I couldn't do the build myself. I would Love to swap the N54 from my 335XI into the E46 (I think I would anyway) then take the S54 from the E46 M3 and put it into an E30! LOL. Dreams! Good to see you here too! So the swap here is much better suited to the m3 characteristics than I first thought. Dan has used a “relatively” small turbo and it really comes in boost early and noise aside it just felt like a big NA engine. I’ll hopefully be able to spend some more time with it.
@@ZeroTo60Tube That's what I like and want from the small turbo set up or any set up. I want the low down power and torque so it's there right from the dig and then it's much more controllable IMHO. As well the size and feel of the E46 chassis. It doesn't even have to be the M3 version as the Chassis is identical before the drive train and suspension are assembled. The interior is almost the same if it's from a 330CI even. I am right on board with wanting to have a car with full interior and all the comforts of BMW over stripped out car which is noisy and has no creature comforts. Man it's so good to have you back! But I fear the hits may have done too much damage to allow you to climb out and get back into the drivers seat again. There are sponsors out the I'm sure of it that would love to support this top notch channel. I keep thinking that Ebay Motors would be one as they sell TONS of after market and OEM BMW parts as well as so much more. But as usual I've gone on far too much.

This is epic. I also have the Haltech Elite 2500 for my drag car. Can't wait to get that car done with the 4L80e, but this e46 is amazing. Can't wait to see it in person.

Drag car should be done soon, maybe a week or two. 1/2 mile event in AZ mid Oct and then we have family plans at the end of the month. If.... Big if... If things slow down and we're not doing 4 to 5 new tunes every day, I can try to visit in November. :-)

That was dans plan. Try and develop and work something out to sell. It’s taken him 18 months to let me film it. But he is pretty happy with it lately. And thanks man, it’s good to be back!

Drift HQ in the states did an n54 e46 a few yes back but it definitely didn’t work out the way they wanted it to. From my knowledge there is now a n/a 2JGE+T
I think it was too soon. Tech has caught up. The di is trash for us hobbyist. Port is the way. Now if you could pull it off with a more inexpensive ECU it would be mint!
Ohhhhh hadn’t seen the drift hq car. The one I saw was in Europe with a stock n54 dme and cluster running in the e46. Do you what drift hq had issues with?
@@ZeroTo60Tube I believe they just had a hard time controlling functions like @vgk46 said they did the swap very early in the release years of the n54. The car I'm talking about they still have and still have car and the videos on there page about the swap. The car was an orange E46 that's still has the similar livery.
@@ZeroTo60Tube that’s true, I’ve been meaning to say I finally got the 335i up and running. The o2 sensors, the china HPFP literally did the job on the n54. I ended getting tires from a local wheel works. And the alignment it needed since 2015, I finally got it. The car has been running great again. I got state reff though about 2 weeks ago in the 350z, freaking sucked. Three cops ambushed me because I was grabbing my jacket to show them I was on my way to work, one got scared and said I was reaching for a weapon. When they saw I didn’t have anything they let me go. But I got state reffed for legal DC intakes. Legal in California. And aftermarket catted exhaust with silencers. Cars you either blend or you get bent…

Seeing as index 12 injectors are now over $4k the port injection only idea seems really smart. I wonder if you could use it with a port injection controller only and not a full stand alone ECU?
Unfortunately not. The dme needs to be in control of most of the fuel due to fuel trims and the way the closed loop o2 works. There is nothing good about the factory dme, other than emissions controls. They factory dme is an amazing piece of technology. But the logic inside it was meant for 300-350hp and fuel efficiency. Removing that factory dme from the equation makes the tuning a lot easier. Aftermarket ecus are really there with drivability and cold start technology now. It’s something I want to explore more before making a definitive opinion. But if the di goes, the factory dme definitely doesn’t need to be there either.
@@GlennTrigger While this haltech works perfectly over the 18month dan has been testing it, he has another ecu in the works as well, which will work better with the e8x e9x chassis cars. Its the maxxecu.

Hi Andrew. Off the topic of the e46. Iv'e got 2010 135 N54 with bad injector issues and a 2010 335 N54 which runs nicely but is my donor car for my planned 135 850hp build in the next 6 months. Iv'e been lazily trying to load INPA onto my MacBook Pro in between loading VMware and attempting to load Windows 10 onto VMware to load INPA. I keep thinking of a shortcut. Swapping out the DME's and the injectors just so I can drive the 135 which I purchased a year ago and had the pleasure of racking up a meagrely 200ks. I'd like to drive it this summer instead of my 07 Elantra workhorse. DO YOU THINK this simple swap wood get me going with minimal problems till I get INPA loaded.? Love the content.
Swapping them would work. However you will need to swap the dme, dash cluster, cas and keys. Which is a bit of a faff. Inpa/Insta is a right pain. A pain on a windows native environment. I don’t think it will work through the mac and a virtual machine. The usb k/d can is iffy when it’s on windows. Unless you have a proper icom. Have you looked in to protools? It does injector coding….. I think.
We did. It’s been around 550whp for about a year. However the point was more so the common failures on n54s. I see way more people broken down or cars out of action for di problems, water pumps, mosfets compared with blown engines

Sorry to smash you with a question but you are the only guy that I would trust 😂 As an expert you are on these N54's as I'm a complete noob when it comes to diagnosing issues. It's a answer I can't get from forums or anyone.. Having a cracked or broken (rear) inlet... Can that cause issues with performance and spool time because it's "Sucking in" too much air and the turbo is basically working "too well" I think I have that issue if it is one, so I've put my stock airbox on but covering some of the air filter with thin plastic to reduce the air and now it drives like a bat out of hell, but when I take off the plastic covering it, it drives pretty lack lusterly back to what it was before.. Should I upgrade inlets or is it something else? Cheers Zero To 60 :)
Hey man, I don’t think you’d notice much difference with an open inlet. However one turbo may need less wdgc to meet target. We’re you getting overboost codes?

@@bslothed3211 definitely a strange one. The car has a map sensor in the manifold for vacuum conditions and a map sensor in the charge pipe as well which is used for boost. It’s those 2 sensors that will effect how much air the dme see’s. so changing anything before the intercooler shouldn’t effect it much other than restrict performance. It’s a new scenario for me, so keen to hear when you find out what it is.
@@ZeroTo60Tube it’s super odd, it’s a prolonged issue! By any chance, would you know any place in Brisbane or Gold Coast that I could take it to? A place that knows these engines, I’d love to take it someone to find the issue, I’m scared if I take it to any performance shop they will go idk lol
@@bslothed3211 Dan's shop Simply Tuning, knows the engines better than anyone else. The problem is it may take a 5 minutes to diagnose or it may take 10 hours. It might worth going to a maintanince type workshop where they have a flat diagnostic fee. It might be worth calling a few mechanics and see what they have to say when you describe the issue.
I’ve been debating on swapping one of these spare n54’s in to my e36. I need a wire harness and dme tho. Not sure if the e46 zf-6 I have swapped in there would work with it or not. Could I get some info on the stand alone he’s running? Who can tune them?
So this is a haltech, custom harness and tuned by Dan. He had a custom com box made up, to make everything in the chassis work as OEM. So it does add some expense. Dan is looking at testing some Maxxecus in the coming months, i will try and be there through the testing. Based on my small amount of knowledge maxxecu would work better than the haltech as you wont need the addition comm box.
Having full aftermarket control over the engine is definitely appealing. While the DI is good for fuel economy, and to be honest will make more power on pump fuel. But with ethanol blends available the DI is just a hindrance. This felt just like a factory tuned car but Dan assured me it’s making more power than a stock dme and was much easier to tune.
@@romierome6286 Dan has experimented with leaving injectors in the head and blanking plugs that can be fitted from above. Once the head is sealed, you need to remove and blank off the HPFP. Then you need a standalone ecu. If you are running it in a e9x e8x the maxxecu is the way to go at the moment.

The value of the S54. They were fetching 14k here in aus just for the motor back in 2020. So the sale of the S54 paid for most of the build. And it makes more than enough power as it is.
Actually as I have said that. That may have been for his e90 m3. These may bolt on…. Ahhh I can’t remember now. If your y need to know shoot a reply though and I will double check.
Send it to him , he will need a spare as safety measure. I'm not even talking about him losing it even if it just fell off the bench it would be not a good day. Also he could keep the business stuff on yours and the timing stuff on his !

It’s a wicked build. Dan really wants to tidy a few things up. But on the same note enjoys it on track with its current blemishes. He said one day he’ll fully restore it and tidy the engine bay, but then he’ll be too worried to park it anywhere.
So who thinks it should have a 8speed lamik swap?
I would love to see the ZF8 swap but maybe with a more standalone controller since it's already a motor swap. No offense to turbolamik
I havent seen any controllers that get close to the functionality of the lamik. Have you seen any that would work for a drift application?

Drift HQ in the states did an n54 e46 a few yes back but it definitely didn’t work out the way they wanted it to. From my knowledge there is now a n/a 2JGE+T
I think it was too soon. Tech has caught up. The di is trash for us hobbyist. Port is the way. Now if you could pull it off with a more inexpensive ECU it would be mint!
Ohhhhh hadn’t seen the drift hq car. The one I saw was in Europe with a stock n54 dme and cluster running in the e46. Do you what drift hq had issues with?
@@ZeroTo60Tube I believe they just had a hard time controlling functions like @vgk46 said they did the swap very early in the release years of the n54. The car I'm talking about they still have and still have car and the videos on there page about the swap. The car was an orange E46 that's still has the similar livery.

@@ZeroTo60Tube that’s true, I’ve been meaning to say I finally got the 335i up and running. The o2 sensors, the china HPFP literally did the job on the n54. I ended getting tires from a local wheel works. And the alignment it needed since 2015, I finally got it. The car has been running great again.
I got state reff though about 2 weeks ago in the 350z, freaking sucked. Three cops ambushed me because I was grabbing my jacket to show them I was on my way to work, one got scared and said I was reaching for a weapon. When they saw I didn’t have anything they let me go. But I got state reffed for legal DC intakes. Legal in California. And aftermarket catted exhaust with silencers. Cars you either blend or you get bent…

Seeing as index 12 injectors are now over $4k the port injection only idea seems really smart.
I wonder if you could use it with a port injection controller only and not a full stand alone ECU?

Unfortunately not. The dme needs to be in control of most of the fuel due to fuel trims and the way the closed loop o2 works.
There is nothing good about the factory dme, other than emissions controls. They factory dme is an amazing piece of technology. But the logic inside it was meant for 300-350hp and fuel efficiency. Removing that factory dme from the equation makes the tuning a lot easier. Aftermarket ecus are really there with drivability and cold start technology now. It’s something I want to explore more before making a definitive opinion. But if the di goes, the factory dme definitely doesn’t need to be there either.

@@GlennTrigger While this haltech works perfectly over the 18month dan has been testing it, he has another ecu in the works as well, which will work better with the e8x e9x chassis cars. Its the maxxecu.

ESS supercharger kits comes complete with everything you need to install.
And very reliable.
The supercharged cars are great. Still have the oem characteristics in regards to power curve and sound. Just a few hundred hp down on this setup.

Hi Andrew. Off the topic of the e46. Iv'e got 2010 135 N54 with bad injector issues and a 2010 335 N54 which runs nicely but is my donor car for my planned 135 850hp build in the next 6 months. Iv'e been lazily trying to load INPA onto my MacBook Pro in between loading VMware and attempting to load Windows 10 onto VMware to load INPA. I keep thinking of a shortcut. Swapping out the DME's and the injectors just so I can drive the 135 which I purchased a year ago and had the pleasure of racking up a meagrely 200ks. I'd like to drive it this summer instead of my 07 Elantra workhorse. DO YOU THINK this simple swap wood get me going with minimal problems till I get INPA loaded.? Love the content.
Swapping them would work. However you will need to swap the dme, dash cluster, cas and keys. Which is a bit of a faff.
Inpa/Insta is a right pain. A pain on a windows native environment. I don’t think it will work through the mac and a virtual machine. The usb k/d can is iffy when it’s on windows. Unless you have a proper icom.
Have you looked in to protools? It does injector coding….. I think.

We did. It’s been around 550whp for about a year. However the point was more so the common failures on n54s. I see way more people broken down or cars out of action for di problems, water pumps, mosfets compared with blown engines

As an expert you are on these N54's as I'm a complete noob when it comes to diagnosing issues. It's a answer I can't get from forums or anyone..
Having a cracked or broken (rear) inlet... Can that cause issues with performance and spool time because it's "Sucking in" too much air and the turbo is basically working "too well"
I think I have that issue if it is one, so I've put my stock airbox on but covering some of the air filter with thin plastic to reduce the air and now it drives like a bat out of hell, but when I take off the plastic covering it, it drives pretty lack lusterly back to what it was before..
Should I upgrade inlets or is it something else? Cheers Zero To 60 :)
Hey man, I don’t think you’d notice much difference with an open inlet. However one turbo may need less wdgc to meet target. We’re you getting overboost codes?

Yeah no codes man, it’s super odd.. I’ve just left the plastic on the intake as it actually performs the way it should but kinda wanna fix the issue lol but have no idea what causes it 😞
@@bslothed3211 definitely a strange one. The car has a map sensor in the manifold for vacuum conditions and a map sensor in the charge pipe as well which is used for boost.
It’s those 2 sensors that will effect how much air the dme see’s. so changing anything before the intercooler shouldn’t effect it much other than restrict performance.
It’s a new scenario for me, so keen to hear when you find out what it is.

By any chance, would you know any place in Brisbane or Gold Coast that I could take it to? A place that knows these engines, I’d love to take it someone to find the issue, I’m scared if I take it to any performance shop they will go idk lol
@@bslothed3211 Dan's shop Simply Tuning, knows the engines better than anyone else. The problem is it may take a 5 minutes to diagnose or it may take 10 hours. It might worth going to a maintanince type workshop where they have a flat diagnostic fee. It might be worth calling a few mechanics and see what they have to say when you describe the issue.
I’ve been debating on swapping one of these spare n54’s in to my e36. I need a wire harness and dme tho. Not sure if the e46 zf-6 I have swapped in there would work with it or not. Could I get some info on the stand alone he’s running? Who can tune them?
So this is a haltech, custom harness and tuned by Dan. He had a custom com box made up, to make everything in the chassis work as OEM. So it does add some expense. Dan is looking at testing some Maxxecus in the coming months, i will try and be there through the testing. Based on my small amount of knowledge maxxecu would work better than the haltech as you wont need the addition comm box.

Having full aftermarket control over the engine is definitely appealing. While the DI is good for fuel economy, and to be honest will make more power on pump fuel. But with ethanol blends available the DI is just a hindrance. This felt just like a factory tuned car but Dan assured me it’s making more power than a stock dme and was much easier to tune.
So what will i need do do if i want to delete my DI
@@romierome6286 Dan has experimented with leaving injectors in the head and blanking plugs that can be fitted from above. Once the head is sealed, you need to remove and blank off the HPFP. Then you need a standalone ecu. If you are running it in a e9x e8x the maxxecu is the way to go at the moment.

The value of the S54. They were fetching 14k here in aus just for the motor back in 2020. So the sale of the S54 paid for most of the build. And it makes more than enough power as it is.

Dan made up a custom set of brackets. Handy having a cnc machine in the shop.

It’s a wicked build. Dan really wants to tidy a few things up. But on the same note enjoys it on track with its current blemishes. He said one day he’ll fully restore it and tidy the engine bay, but then he’ll be too worried to park it anywhere.
