Why WOULDN'T you want to live in Nicaragua? I mean come on... A slice of heaven! The peace, the security, the people, the beach, the lakes, no snow, the culture... Ok, the driving here is a bit rough... but nowhere is perfect!
For those questioning the safety in Nicaragua.... It's the safest country in Central America. Been here over 9 years and I have never once felt unsafe. I pick up a lot of backpacking tourists and the women especially always comment on how safe they feel in Nicaragua.
My wife is from Nicaragua. While we were going through the immigration process, our plan B was for me to move there. Plan A worked out better but, we travel back and forth a lot when we’re able.
What an informative and interesting lecture I've seen on life in another country. So many considerations and also poignant points made about life overall, what makes it valuable, what connects us, etc. Pandema -era factoids and information included wow. Love it thank you! So much to think about. Also what a great thing to learn about Nicaragua as well, that although it's a poorer country economically perhaps, the locals still can go out and enjoy common culture. That doesn't seem to happen as much in the US. It shows that there are so many things to consider when considering how wealth historically has and hasn't, and presently does or doesn’t, affect a people's overall quality of life. LOVE IT. Thank you! Great video! Also love the love for language and desire to be connected to the people of the country through it. Expands the brain and heart and connections big time. I lived in Romania a few months a long time ago and found the people so sweet and absolutely loved the language! A cool mix of Romance language and also Russian sounds. An equal parts cozy, beautiful, and flowy language for me to learn, very fun to hear and speak. I also loved their traditional art. :)
Yeah I do fly my parrots free lol. I am the guy from Málaga that you gonna meet soon lol. One of my issue is to be able make sure I can bring my parrots with me lol. Looks like it shouldnt be a problem for nicaragua but it's so difficult to find info on Internet. And then I need to have a place like the one in the video next to the future house 😅
@@gmcryptom9721 yeah, you'll not find much info on that sort of thing on the Internet. I doubt that parrots are restricted here, as they are wild and not pets.
Thanks for another informative video. Nicaragua's location close to the US is also one of the reasons I'm interested in it. Although I've been unable to get a direct flight from Seatac and Portland areas. I spent 10 days in Costa Rica in February and my Spanish really improved. Not that I increased my Spanish, but I became much more confident in using the Spanish that I've learned so far. I grew up in an old farm house on Puget Sound, and I really miss being on the water. Not sure whether I'd be interested in living on the ocean or the lake (for kayaking). I look forward to visiting next year and checking things out.
Hey Scott, I was wondering what site you find your safety stats on. I was telling my friend about my plans, and she warned me about safety (funny since she’s Colombian). I told her how safe Nicaragua was. She asked me where I was getting my info from, and I was like, ummmm… from Scott..? Lol.. I did research it a bit on my own, but on the many sites I visited, I wasn’t finding the same ratings that you quote. I would like to be able to have an informed and accurate conversation about safety. I know many reports are skewed, so I would just like to know where you go to find accurate data.
The original sources from 2021 when we used to research cannot be found. Pretty much all data from then seems to be missing. But I've found some good sources for information that I'm attempting to put together for an episode.
Nice, Just saw video. I went to Nica 4 times and stayed up to 6 weeks. It is big decision, I find Nica a bit boring. I stay in Rivas - San Juan del Sol.
More or less kidding, but that area of the country is sparsely populated and has no major city and SJDS is a tourist trap / expat enclave. So while it is interesting for those of us who live here full time to go for a weekend and do something different, we typically actually find that region to be quite boring compared to most of the country. Very few people, much less going on in general and what is going on is mostly just a stream of backpackers which doesn't make for the most interesting culture.
Well not now, no. It's a war zone. Even my super adventurous south American travelers won't enter the country because they are scared. People who will go to Venezuela or Paraguay or Bolivia without a second thought, people who casually travel to Peru during the problems this past year. Ecuador is collapsing and no one should be looking at it for moving OR travel right now. It's legit risky for the moment. Like, it's currently the most dangerous place to be (outside of Haiti, duh) in the Americas right now.

Foreign residency status is not a factor in foreign earned income. This may seem counterintuitive but as residency is a loose, non-standard concept you could never use it. Residency is a status locally not foreign. Citizenship is a status foreign.
We home school, always have. Our kids have lived in eight countries so it is really important for quality and continuity of education. We lived in Texas before leaving the US where the education level is extremely poor so we never considered using the local school system even when we lived in the US.

I truly have not. And I am pretty adventurous. I'll go walking at night, hang out in the barrios, live in the middle of the city. I've really never been worried here. It's pretty green and lush, but the dry season is long and turns brown. You can see that in the video here. This is the end of the dry season so this is as dry as it gets. Once the rains hit in a week or two, it'll be super green. We are a jungle country but don't get quite the rain of Panama so they are just slightly greener. But we are pretty darn green.

Well, keep in mind that 6 months of the year we are totally without rain. It's very rainy for only half the year, and only for a few hours each day, not all day (which is still a lot of rain.) We aren't super humid. We are noticeably drier (5-15% on average) than Dallas, TX which isn't considered humid at all. And way, way less humid than Houston, TX which IS considered to be humid. Leon is on the humid side for Nicaragua and is very "middle of the road"... not dry, but not humid.

That would almost always be a terrible idea. Especially with a trailer. Because you'd be forced to either turn around and drive back OR to import the truck and trailer... as a single unit, it would be hell.
Most petty crime in Nicaragua isn’t reported. Some when reported isn’t recorded. Murder rates in Nicaragua are around the same as the US. All murders do get reported. Homicide rates went up in 2018, roughly 200 to 300 dead in the riots. Be careful on buses. Also, foreign residents are less likely to be robbed than tourists since some of us defend with firearms and tourists go home before the trial. Some of us have compared notes on being asked for directions when Nicaraguans with better Spanish were around. I’ve also had a bus helper show concerns as I was going solo to Managua. I spoke enough Spanish to reassure her that I could deal.
Murder rate / homocide rate in Nicaragua is under half that of the US. It's WAY safer in that aspect. Even in 2018 I think it only rose to "around that of the US" for that brief period.

Remember you are a tourist here, I don't know any country that governs homeschooling for tourists. I've lived all over the world and that's not really a thing. If you apply for residency, only then is it even a potential topic, and even there most of the world leaves foreigners alone in that regard for myriad reasons.

Where online did you see that? That's a requirement everywhere in the world if you are coming from a yellow fever country and if so you desperately needed to have it before going there. Where are you coming from? Venezuela, Colombia, central Africa?

Yeah, sadly just flights from Miami and Houston, I think, right now. So from anywhere in the USA you have to get to those cities first.
