I haven't stitched in 20 years. This was helpful. Think I'll stick with my old bobbins in a box method. Cheap, simple, and compact. You probably saved me a lot of money Thanks so much for sharing.
I just inherited my grandmother’s bobbin box. My mom does the bags and that is what I learned. I want to start using the bobbins and will look for your winding video. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this video and all the comments. I've been knitting for a long time and am tired of it and going back to Needlepoint. I have been trying to figure out how to keep my floss organized and this video has really helped. I'm going to wind the bobbins. For my last project I cut all my thread to 18" and put it on a Project Card. Now am wondering what to do with that. It's very convenient to have it cut but I don't think it will wind up well. Perhaps I'll put it in the snack bags.
My method is less pretty but it works for me at the moment. I spread open the skene and cut all of the cotton, once, which gives good lengths of cotton. then I very loosely plait the whole skene. I can remove a length of cotton easily. Down side - if I want to use one or two strands out of the six - I have a length of strands left over and not sure what to do with it. My heaping tangle is so, so much smaller with this method. Thank you for showing us the plus and minus of each method.
Thanks for the great information. I've tried all 3, and the stitch bows are my least favorite for the same reasons you stated. I do a combination of bags and bobbins. I keep just the lose thread in the baggies (I cut a 3' thread from the bobbin, pull 1 strand off for my work, and I stick the remaining 5-stranded thread in the bag for use later. I keep my floss bags on the metal hoops/mini-binders that Floss-Away sells to keep it organized. I keep the bobbins in a bobbin box for that project. For my floss not being used on the current project (I have the full DMC floss collection x3 (it's an illness, lol)), I can store the floss bags all in 2 photo boxes since they don't have much bulk. The bobbins are also stored in bobbin boxes. I have been using index cards for years. Since they are a little too big for the floss bags, I cut them in half first.
I love the bobbin method. All my floss is on plastic bobbins. I also found a case at Canadian Tire that was for screws but fit my bobbins., It comes with four biggers cases that actually fits one of each color. My extra floss i store in a roll cart separated by number in ziplock bags.
I have over 150 different colours in my current pattern. I say current - Ive been working on it about 5 years now. I use the bobbins in the boxes and arrange them in colours, ie a brown box, green box, blue box. I find it much easier to use tho it can take me a while to find a colour just to do a few stitches with it in that part that Im doing. Thanks for this video, answered the question re the binder, I wont be using that.
I did find bobbin binder pages by Darice. But the pockets face the spine n not "up" like my old ones.Im afraid they will fall out while flipping pages. So Im going to try somethin else...like bags lol.Thx!
I love the index card idea! I’m not a fan of the floss bags either and I also have a huge amount of un-numbered flosses- it’s an unholy mess! 😂 Super tips thank you!
Yes I have tried all the methods I hated the kinks the bobbins left, but I find the floss bags I use can be slippery, so I am now going back to bobbins ;0)))
I am currently switching from baggies to bobbins, I found Janilynn ones at Walmart 56 for .75 cents and bought all the ones they had. They seem sturdier than the DMC ones that were twice the price. I just need to get the plastic boxes now and I think I saw some at the dollar store. Thanks for sharing your info.
I like the bobbins too! I try the "boes" (don't write that word) the thing that i really hate about it, it's when i had a left over, and i didn't know what to do... I usually wrapped it into the "boe" but when I try to use that floss it was like a curly hair! So for me I use bobbins in the dmc floss, and as i don't have many silks or hand died thread i keep them in floss bags :)
FYI instead of acetone for removing ink try 90 proof alcohol (got mine at Dollar Tree). It takes Sharpie in (alcohol ink) off very easily and is easier on the plastic bobbin. It will make them last longer.
That's a really useful video thank you. I'm very much a bobbin girl myself for DMC threads. Do you think the bobbins would fray the more expensive silks that some charts call for?
Great video. I started with stitch bows then went to bobbins. I hated the bobbin box...I hated having to scoot them all back to add in numbers. I like the bags the best...I sorrt of miss bobbonating though. Inagree anout the tangles with the bags but the bobbin cause creases lol. I dont think there is a "perfect" way. I like the idea of the bobbins in the bags may have to try that..
Each method has its pros and cons. The lack of space in the bobbin boxes was the thing that made me stitch years ago... but storage space and cost has be back at the beginning.
That is one of the nice things about the Stitch Bows It is so fast to set them up. If DMC would have come up with a better way to store them I probably wouldn't have gone back to the bobbins.
Thx for yr informative video! Im a bobbin girl but I have mine in mini pockets (20 on a page) that fit in a standard binder. Each binder holds 5-7 pages but I cant get them anymore! I dont like the organizer boxes bcuz I think the thread rubs against ea. other. Will try smaller plastic bags n smaller storage containers.Dollar Tree here I come!;-)

So much floss, so little time. I am currently using bobbins. Years ago I had used the little baggies and that got cumbersome. Very interesting video.

equitime77 I am glad you found it helpful!
I like floss drops perhaps combined with baggies until I have enough inventory to justify the whole set in file boxes.
Thanks for saving me the time and money of trying these storage methods

Thanks for this video. I was debating about the stitch bo's.

Theresa Feeney Good luck! and have fun.
Thanks. I found the storage boxes today and am almost done winding so now I can get back to stitching. Thanks again for your advice, it is helpful!
How about trying nine-pocket baseball card pages. One bobbin per pocket
I like the bobbins too! I try the "boes" (don't write that word) the thing that i really hate about it, it's when i had a left over, and i didn't know what to do... Perfect video for me right now, thank you for posting it!
AgainEven I'm glad it was useful.

Deborah Lynch I have alcohol, so i'll try that the next time. :)
i love the plastic bobbins... ive been stitching for a longggggg time .
Thx for the video! I really prefer bobbins but I love your other ideas!
That's a really useful video thank you. I'm very much a bobbin girl myself for DMC threads. Do you think the bobbins would fray the more expensive silks that some charts call for?
I haven't done anything with silks yet so I am not sure on that one.
Great video. I started with stitch bows then went to bobbins. I hated the bobbin box...I hated having to scoot them all back to add in numbers. hi, I would make a piece of cardstock like the overdyed floss comes on & loop the skeins thru the hole to secure from tangling.
I always thought that you had to wind the floss over the stitch bows like regular bobbins. It seems very quick and easy.
That is one of the nice things about the Stitch Bows It is so fast to set them up. If DMC would have come up with a better way to store them I probably wouldn't have gone back to the bobbins.
Tried the baggy thing. Disaster. Now, I have almost 50 plastic craft boxes of thread, all wound on bobbins, and organized by color, and number.
Came across this video and it gave me an idea to use, as an alternative to snack bags, my used breastmilk bags. Thank you! 😊
is floss really good to stitch with?? is it really strong?
Thx for yr informative video! Im a bobbin girl but I have mine in mini pockets (20 on a page) that fit in a standard binder. Each binder holds 5-7 pages but I cant get them anymore! Margaret Bates The thread doesn't rub as long as you don't over pack the container. But everyone has to find what works for them.
Amo o ponto cruz vc faz um lindo trabalho bjs
adelia elen Thank you.
😍😍😍😍😍
love your video it help me out alot
I am a bobbins gal : )
