  • I've tried a few different ways to organize my floss.
I've linked some of the supplies below.
The two things that I were important to me:
    1. It has to be portable.
    2. It has to keep an entire set of DMC together.

Before coming to your video I'd watched a few videos on organizing floss. Having already invested in bobbins and boxes, I wasn't ready to spend the money on floss drops or the time on DIY floss drops. I'm so relieved to see how I can use my bobbins like floss drops. So smart! In fact, it was a "duh" moment for me, cuz I'm usually pretty good are making my things serve more than a single purpose. Thanks for sharing.

It makes me mad I never even thought of using the bobbins this way. The hours I've wasted weaving the whole thread, or better yet the pre-cut individual threads around the bobbins 😭 You have revolutionized yarn storage for me!

I was always undecided on switching to bobbins… but showing your way that it’s also a floss drop has totally converted me! Cant wait to try this😍

Oh, I hope it works for you or maybe you'll find some way to change things up that works best. But so far this has been the system that's worked for me the longest!

It looks as if the luggage tags weigh less than binder rings, and I think they would be easier for me to open, so that's a nice find that I have to check out. I also like the macrame loops.
I would find it cumbersome to carry around a master set, though. I suppose you do that to completely eliminate extra skeins, but I have been a monogamous stitcher most of my life, so it wasn't an issue to pull out the colors currently in use. Also floss came with the Danish kits that introduced me to cross stitching, so then I didn't need to pull any floss at all from the master set unless I was substituting colors. For me, I feel lighter, freer to have just the colors of a current project with me.
It makes so much sense to have the floss precut to the preferred length before bobbinating. I don't think I've seen that before. Because the thread is bunchier, do you find it develop less kinking? (I've never bobbinated; I'm just curious.)

My floss is in Floss-A-Way bags (they are the size of a snack bag). There is a box made just for these about the size of a shoe box. I think this is the simplest neatest way.

I sort my floss bobbins by colors. I label DMC by number. Other floss brands I label with an alphabetic letter before their number, and I have a chart telling me which brands go to which letters. For example, C123 would be Coates number 123.
Kits often don’t tell you the floss brand. They may say something like “light green”. I don’t label those left - overs. By sorting floss by colors, I can find unknown colors and use them where I need small amounts here and there. They blend in well as long as they are very close to the color called for. As in a forest scene with many trees and shrubs. I never use unknown floss if the pattern calls for big sections of a color because the color differences would show and if I ran out of the floss, I couldn’t get more very easily.

I am rackling my brain for DMC storage
    It makes me crazy.... 🙃🙃
For the moment, all my DMC threads are rolling on DMC cardboard and store in drawers.
Today I have sorted them by number instead of by color. It tooks me all the afternoon...
But maybe I will tidy in an other way in the futur... I think that rolling on DMC cardboard they get dammage. And cardboards are not robust, they broken easily.
I like the idea of drop but it takes place....

I have a very old wooden box that must have been used for photo equipment or some such thing. When I brought it home and wanted to put my floss in it I had been using little plastic bags but of course keeping them organized was a terrible disaster. But then my husband suggested taking some plastic and making a grid in the wooden box and then filing all my plastic bags by number as I had them but since they were in this wooden box they would stay in place. And I think I have every color DMC makes. I do have a few in a shoe box that are the higher numbers and I know where they are. Put the starting number on the end of the shoe box with a sticker so if I need to change the number I can easily do it. But have had my floss stored like this fir at least 50 yrs. I just take my skein of floss, fold it in half, slip it in the plastic bag after I have put a little sticker on the top left hand corner and put it in order where it belongs per the number. Goes quick. No bobbinating for me! To much work. When I need a color, I just pull out the skien and cut my length, pull the strand I need and bout the other 5 strands back in the bag. When I need another strand. It’s easy. Just pull out that loose strands piece out and pull what I need. And when I am pulling the colors I’m needing for a loroject. I put the whole skien in to a snack baggie and put a hole in it and put it in a smallish ring an number. I don’t tend to work on more than one or two projects at a time. If I go to see if I have a color for yet another project I and if the thread is missing I know to check my other 2 projects. And as I’m going thru my flosses and I see a low amount of floss in a baggie, will write it down in my phone and when I’m out, or I see a sale I will pick it up. And if the color I had started to go for is low, I’ll also list it up s as bd pick it up when I’m out shopping. I live about 25 miles from my local Joanns so I need to be very organized. Sorry this is so long but didn’t know how else to tell it all. Happy stitching!!

It’s very interesting to see the difference between storing embroidery floss for friendship bracelets and cross stitching/embroidery (I have most of my floss on the skeins in a bag and when I use it I’ll put it on a bobbin with almost the same technique as the first, just used completely different)

This is the best floss organizing idea I have found!! I’ve always used bobbins but started watching floss tubes where they use rings or plastic bags and, quite frankly, it looks messy and I don’t have that kind of space for storage. Thank you for sharing! This is brilliant!!

You are so welcome! I know that some people don't like that bobbins cause little creases in the threads when they go to use them. But it doesn't bother me and in my projects the creases don't show up once I stitch with it. But just something to keep in mind when deciding. ❤️

These bobbins will put CREASES on the floss. Placing them on rings is so much better
