  • This is a video of a Himalayan Alpine Climbing Course I ran in Nepal in November and December of 2022.
Since 2017 Karma Gelygen Sherpa and I have been running a Himalayan Alpine Climbing Course in Nepal through the nonprofit "Karma Project", which we run together (www.karmaproject-nepal.org). Students on the course are Nepalese as well as international from many different countries.
We started the course after Da Tenji Sherpa, a friend of mine and relative of Karma's, died on Makalu in 2016. Da Tenji didn't have the resources to attend formal training for his work in the mountains, even though he had climbed several 8,000 meter peaks including Mount Everest. He was found with his tent partner, Lakpa Wangel Sherpa, dead in his tent at Camp II. The likely cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning caused by running a stove in an unventilated tent. Ta Tenji's death might have easily been avoided were he given access to basic mountaineering training.
In honor of Da Tenji, Nepalese students on the course are provided with a scholarship to attend the training which covers the cost of their transportation, food, lodging, and most of their equipment. International students pay a fee to attend. The training is 30 days long and includes training in mountain navigation, high altitude medicine, rock climbing, ice climbing, crevasse rescue, and expedition leadership. Students also climb a 21,000ft. peak as part of the course. Nepalese students must pass an exam to receive a certificate. All previous Nepalese students have gained work in mountain tourism following the course, with most opting to work on 8,000 meter peaks such as Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Manaslu. Many international students use the course to further their recreational climbing abilities, to gain experience that is applicable to their guiding careers, or to engage in a unique cultural exchange and mountain climbing experience.
