Will They Change Advance Wars Most DIFFICULT Mission?
#nintendo #advancewars #switch
Rivals is the best idea ever.
Eagle: Hey Andi, we suffered through a long and hard war, wanna throw more people into the meatgrinder as a friendly competition?
Andy: Sure.
Eagle: Also since this is a friendly competition to find out who of us is the better CO, I'll get an entire army from the start and you not. And I'll also cheat through the FoW.
Andy: I hate you?
That's to compensate for Andy's defense bonus.
@@arcturus64 lol
Only to compensate for the first turn advantage
@@vevans0009 yo when I read this shit, I started screaming
If they just get rid of the Fog of War, it’d at least make the map playable. At least if you could see Eagle’s movements you could plan against them, as opposed to the current one where he jumps you in the alley.
With the entire city
I hope they can fix that like DoR Fog of war.
They either need to get rid of the fog of war or make it so that the AI is subjected to it the same way humans are.
@@sergiomendoza251 That would be ideal. DoR made FoW maps in the campaign interesting to play rather than a slog where the AI cheats constantly.
Did something different it looks like. Now AI no longer cheat in Fog of War. This gives us a little bit of breathing room at least.
Rivals be like:
Eagle: Andy, I challenge you to a game of Chess
Andy: Okay, Chess isn't too difficult.
Eagle: And it'll be on EQUAL terms. We settle our rivalry
Andy: Sounds fair
Eagle: Except I start with 50% more pieces, all of my pawns are Queens, and only you get to experience Fog of War
Andy:....wut?
man needed 10 queens to make it equal against Andy :D
Well, someone is more EQUAL than others, as always
One of the biggest problems of the mission is the FoW advantage Eagle has by being a CPU, and Im still amazed it took until the 4TH GAME to actually have CPUs really be hindered by FoW, so making the CPUs just as blind from the fog as the player is should be a no brainer change, a change to the mission specifically could maybe some pre deployed Anti-Air to survive Eagles first assualt
Funnily enough, I believe that Super Famicom Wars also made the AI respect Fog of War rules, with AI-controlled units frequently getting themselves trapped on their enemy's (i.e. the player's, though not necessarily always) own units if the AI didn't have line of sight with said enemy units.
Considering how consistent the missions in the Reboot footage have been, I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same.
I hope they learned from Days of Ruin
The AI might be better in some way, which could make it harder, but perhaps fog of war cheating is removed.
Advance Wars 1 really feels like a launch title, despite having an extra three months before launch. It has that quality roller coaster where it repeatedly goes from A+ to F- and back to A+ again in rapid succession. Not nearly Sonic Adventure level (which actually as a launch title) but very wild.
They might change how it works to avoid your situation. Finish mission 20, get the credits and a final ranking, and THEN mission 21 becomes available. They might even call it something like Bonus Mission, to separate it further from the campaign.
This mission is very much beatable, but just like almost all of the advance campaign, it's only because the AI is exploitable. If they improve the AI to make it dual strike level or better, they are going to need to rebalance more than just Rivals
I'm waiting for the day we face a neural network AI and they actually have to handicap the player instead.
The only thing then can fix the battle is fix the fog of war bullshit as they made in Days of ruin.
@@sergiomendoza251 What you mean by that? I would know more about it (Viewer, who don't watch Days of Ruin lets play)
@@endlessplayer1636 the IA units are blind in Fog of war like the player, the air units attack in the next turn after the apear.
Funnily enough I actually beat this mission on my first try and it took me exactly 83 in game days to beat the mission and the game still gave me a bit of points for the "speed" category to get a better rank. The game is absolutely brutal with the speed requirements and you basically need to win as soon as possible if you want to get an S-Rank but apparently the developers knew what they were doing since 83 days still gave me a bit of "speed" score. They were expecting players to sit there for hours beating this single map.
I'm hoping that they keep it in, but that they give players some sort of skip option for it.
Perhaps even make it so that if you get defeated Andy just takes the L (but of course, those who want to beat the map can just reset)
It’s now only unlockable *After* you properly beat the game, at least.
So much for a "friendly sparring" match.
Given the toy box aesthetic of AW1+2:BC, it kinda makes more sense now.
Wonder what WhoIsThisGit will make of this...
Probably experiencing ptsd and realizing there are no game sharks for this switch games
Well, he better get his fork and knife ready, because he got a rad fresh load of steel to chew.
@@squeletoon27 Whoisthisgit is so funny

I feel like they shouldn't change the mission gameplay wise becasue it would lose it's infamy. However, it would be cool to see it turn into a War Room Mission. But you still have to beat the Advance Campaign to unlock it or something like that. That's just my take on it
Part of the difficulty comes down to the fact that the AI (in at least AW1, I don't remember about 2 or DS but this definitely does not happen in DoR/DC) cheats in Fog and can see the entire map save for hiding places, vision ranges be damned. I feel like I heard somewhere that this might be corrected in RBC but I'm not 100% certain. If it is, then that might be enough to make the mission... tolerable. Or not, but fingers crossed.
pretty sure the only AI that doesn't cheat FOW is days of ruin.
in AW1 and 2 the AI has full map vision but still has to put units next to forests and reefs to attack them. in AWDS the AI knows where your units are however they can now only attack units inside their units vision range. AWDoR AI is blind in fog, I would argue that fog makes maps easier in DoR even.
Lmao, you accidentally unlocking the insanely hard rivals mission reminds me of something that happened to me. Been playing some game and there were like two routes, one was the normal way and the other was some hidden secret that would give you a few cool new things but it would also make every subsequent mission *insanely* difficult. And somehow I went the secret path without even noticing and then I just assumed that the insane difficulty spike was just intended, I didn't even know about the normal path. XD
I actually had more trouble with Kanbei's Error than I did with Rivals. That being said I would prefer a lot of balance changes, but Max having 50 percent attack still suggests we won't get any fundamental improvements to the gameplay.
The best improvements then can be fixed is the fog of war itself.
Considering how faithful all the other maps have been, I not only think it will remain the same, I actually think it will be HARDER since we could have better, less cheese-able AI to fight against.
Man, I can't even beat normal mode Rivals 💀
We suffered, why shouldn't they?
I hope you're joking.
Nobodys suffering in the youtube era
SUFFER AS I HAVE SUFFERED
Of course. Because nobody is ever allowed to have it better than you.
If you truly suffered, you wouldn't wish it on anyone else
Easy way to fix it would be to give Andy a simple Yes No question at the end of the Sturm match. They could even get a little dig in by having Eagle call you a coward if you say no. Alternately, they could have the end credits and the end-of-game bonuses unlock first, and THEN begin the mission.
They changed the unlock requirements, now you must clear every branching path after beating the campaign, at least that’s how it works in the normal campaign, I haven’t tried the advanced campaign yet
Getting rid of fog of war on this map would make it easier without sacrificing any predeployed units for the challenge. Maybe they can turn fog of war back on after the first 5 days if you really want to.
I will say it could use minor changes to make it easier for people to fight. Also make people get more hints to the unlock of the mission.
I hope they fixed the issue where there was at least one mission in the hard mode where it was impossible to get a perfect score.
Imo it should be there, but there should be an option to skip it or something optionnal to handicap the player.
I watched the original Rivals stream when it was live, I was the guy mangs roasted for having a bad router lol.
I’ve played Advance Wars since the beginning, and got 100% on normal campaign, not even bothering with Hard mode because I wasn’t THAT hardcore of a gamer at the time. I remember struggling a little bit with Rivals on normal, but managed to beat it. I only just recently heard of the insane difficulty of rivals on hard mode since the reboot came out. Did I spare myself a lot of suffering or did I miss out? lol
If they're planning on staying as faithful as possible to the originals, expect AC Rivals to remain unchanged. I do have to wonder, though: will the AI have that strange random seed that's determined right at the start of the campaign that can render even a turn by turn guide obsolete if the wrong seed's chosen, or will it behave consistently every time?
I cannot wait for this. I hope they keep the difficulty up. There's a reset turn button now so can quickly go back on really bad turns.
Not sure how far back it goes. It would not be as helpful if it did not undo enemy turns.
I remember that stream. Mangs raged a lot.
As I understand, you can change the difficulty at any time (or at least that's what the preview seems to imply) meaning you can turn rivals into it's normal mode if you're on hard
my respect for the poor bastard that had to beat advanced rivals when playtesting the game.
he is the true gigachad.
One of the earliest things I learned about with this series was Kanbei's Error and Rivals being insanely difficult in Advanced campaign. I remember it being arguable whether Kanbei's Error was harder or easier. But considering Mangs would have needed to beat it as a kid before losing to Rivals, I am supposing that Rivals is the hardest.
Kanbei's Error is a big wall for most players since it is one of the few missions that can't simply be brute forced (Kanbei just wins on day 5 if you don't know to interrupt his cap). However, once you figure out that all you need to do is make his island anti-air move onto one of the neutral properties, the map becomes a lot easier to manage, since Kanbei now has to invade one of YOUR islands and take over the property (and since he can't produce new T-copters, all you need to do is kill the ones he starts with, and you've effectively won the map).
Rivals on the other hand, is just a RNG fest.
The AI being forced to play fair in FoW would already go a long way.
It would also help with the travesty that is Kanbei needs Bases! in Hard Mode…
They seem to be very faithful about the gameplay so they are most likely not gonna change rivals
HOWEVER the ai doesn’t cheat in Days of Ruin so there is no reason it does in this game since the AI cheat was due to technical difficulties
So I’m betting unchanged rivals with an AI that doesn’t cheat
FOW has been confirmed to be changed.
They seem to have changed the way map ranking works for the AW1 content, so it feels like nothing's stopping them.
Maybe validate the campaign as "finished" once you beat mission 20 and still offer rivals after that ?
That would be a simple way to have everyone relatively happy at a pretty generic cost
I'd love to see a follow-up to this
My hope is that Rivals will not bc the hardest map bc they added new, even harder maps. I might just be dreaming but it would be cool.
I hoped they changed rivals, difficulty is a thing, but hard mode rivals is just an awfully designed map
I’m going to say, if the rest of the game hasn’t been radically rebalanced, it shouldn’t be changed. Partly as changing one mission if you haven’t changed the rest of the game feels wrong, partly to preserve the weirdness of this radically difficult mission compared to the rest of the game. And partly as it’d be funny to leave a ticking time bomb in the game for some poor sap to stumble onto.
But they should give the option to skip past or decline the mission and get your hard campaign clear.
New Mangs challenge: Beat Rivals Hard with no unit deaths.
If they keep it the same in the challenge mode, imagine the horrors that will come from the Master Mode version...
I forgot that was going to be a thing. Oh god.
Anyone that unlocks Rivals is in for bloody hell. Seriously.
Any other campaign map when yielding: 'I see that you've lost. Let me give you some legitimate advice with a smile.'
Rivals: *'git gud scrub'*
This mission's a dick.
Quick question, isn’t eagle the best choice for the right side of the final battle considering kanbei’s error makes it very unlikely that you’ll beat it in time?
No, Eagle is an awful choice because Sturm starts with 249823928 fighters. Kanbei is the best choice, followed by Drake, then Eagle, then Sami imo.
Well at least drake has neutral strength ground units
@@Mangs1337 I wouldn't get Drake over Eagle in the final battle. Sturm only starts with 4 fighters and half the time he just moves all of them into range of all your initial missiles and anti air if you position them well and you can just shoot them all down before they do any serious damage. Eagle is a great CO on that map as the map design with its terrain heavily favors air units. on top of that Eagle's starting force is by far the best you can get on that side brining a total 129k value on the field. Kanbei comes close with 120k (100k if you ignore his increased cost) and he's overall still a very strong CO on this map, while Drake only brings 75k of unit value (24k of that being in missiles btw). Drake doesn't do too much aside from occasionally draining Sturms funds with Tsunami and having 20% weaker air units pins him on the ground where he pretty much does the same as andy. Sami is most definitely the worst CO on that side as the map is too big for Infantry to do much. I'd argue that Kanbei and Eagle are fairly even on that map though. on a side note you have to play the 4 consecutive green earth missions with sami to get eagle in the final battle not all the eagle missions (which is impossible anyway cause in the first eagle battle you only have andy available) and also the dialogue you get from playing max on the second eagle mission (sami's debut) is hilarious as well
@@dewottgaming1507 Yeah but those 4 fighters give Sturm a ton of power-charge and it's better to just not have any air units since you can use Sturm's own fighters against him, letting them clog up the field and making it hard for his MD tanks to reach you. Kanbei is the superior choice for obvious reasons, but Drake is pretty insane too, Tsunami reduces Sturm's total army by 10% every time it comes in, and I also like Drake's starting forces. You're just better off not using air units against Sturm for the reasons I mentioned above.
A friendly match between rivals where only minimal casualties of around 20,000 men per side were incurred, definitely not a big loss considering that the conflict with Sturm had just ended, so it's not even comparable really
Rivals is a textbook example on how not to make a video game level, so I hope the developers nerf it (though I unfortunately kinda doubt they will)
The AI in Advance Wars Reboot camp could have a smarter or less skilled AI compared to the previous GBA games.
Maybe if you bought everything else in hachis shop. You can now purchase the ultimate challenge and enjoy this mission.
Perhaps they should give players the ending and then give them the option to play "Rivals".
Eagle has 3 infantry positioned by 4 bases in the beginning crushing you instantly with in a few days!
Can't even make a dent to capture one base in the middle of the map! It's insane. Glad I'm not the only one struggling. Feel a little bit better now considering this is the hardest mission in the game. 🤯💀
not just the game! the whole damn franchise lol
A way they could avoid the issue, would be that the player can unlock Rivals on Hard Mode. However, Rivals is its on separate mode. It is not part of the campaign.
its a huge slap in the face for using probably the best co for the final battle and they throw you in the meatgrinder for using him
i know this is the most difficult mission but i beat it just by building a lot of T-Copters and it was strange how eagle did not atack any of them, was it a bug?
they totally should change Rivals but I doubt they will.
i mean would it be fair to deny the players the 'authentic advance wars experience' that traumatized you as a kid, i played this mission as a kid as well... and i also... gave up after failing 40x...
would it be a more cruel fate to not allow the younger generation the true advance wars experience than beating Rivals on hard? It's a more cruel fate then Andy finding out he's been using airports wrong the entire time... and that his question of 'what's an airport' was actually based on truth lol...
If they fix the AI to not see in fog, than it should be al lot more manageable than before
make a video on how you would try to balance Rivals while still keeping it as the hardest mission
I don't think they will change the map itself but they could possibly make the AI fairer like needing to play dog of war like a human player would.
2:28 - Lol, "Funny bitch".
The only thing then make that mission more enjoyble is fix the fog of war as they made in Days of Ruin.
Mangs, this mission doesn't unlock by playing all eagle missions with sami, is unlock by playing the entire green earth arc in the campaing (that means drake missions + wings of victory), just to know
I would make it skip-able. An unfair mission can be fun, but not to players without enough experience.
By Eagle missions, you mean Green Earth missions. Use Sami in Captain Drake, Naval Clash, Wings of Victory, and Battle Mystery in the original AW1. Eagle then becomes your 3rd CO in Final Battle. Then Rivals appears afterwards. In reboot camp, you get to pick your 2nd and 3rd COs in Final Battle, but Rivals doesn't appear even if you pick Eagle as your 2nd or 3rd CO. Instead, after clearing Final Battle, I think you have to play all the other side missions that you didn't choose. If I'm right, clearing all of those missions should unlock Rivals.
This mission prevented me from 100%-ing Advance Wars...and nearly made me throw my GBA in anger.
Not sure if I'm glad or disappointed that Rivals was removed from Reboot camp
Actually I take back what Ive said.
Rivals mission still exists, it unlocks when you have cleared all the AW1 missions except for that one.
Clearing this mission unlocks Nell from Hachis shop I believe
Reboot Blue Moon mechs look like they're carrying paintbrushes.
The map is unfair straight from the get go but on top of that AI cheats by ignoring spotting and FoW. I remember watching a YTber clearing the FoW and playing it like a normal map just to see how much force Eagle start with. He struggled but then decided to try and beat it like it is intended to do. Getting air raided by several bomber when your economy is low and you have literally no AA while having to spread your infantry to capture nearby city WHILE ALSO having to speed up before the tank and medium tank reaches your island, that is just bullcrap.
Wait, this is the same map to unlock Eagle? Is the map different in normal mode cos I don't think I ever played it on hard mode?
The map look similar to what I remember but it was a longer looking map and less islands in the middle?
I remember beating it by accidently therefore didn't get a good grade. All I did was getting an infantry to the factory the bottom part of the map. Build a helicopter or APC to transport that soldier to Eagle HQ and capture it!
When the guy making all the Advance Wars videos says it took him 2 hours and 5 resets, you have my attention.
I wouldn't mind if they trim down the difficulty in Advance Wars 1 missions though, because lots of them incredibly hard. The AI should be harder but, those amount of units are ridiculous
Well, there may be more than three difficulty settings. Maybe they have it like newer Fire Emblems where you are not expected to beat the hardest difficulty.
AC Rivals in a nutshell
Eagle: FU Andy
Andy:?😭
I’d like to see Wayforward take their own spin on Rivals and completely reinvent it, still make it stupidly hard of course.
I think this mission and Kanbei's Error? Should be changed. I get faithful reboots and that's great but some things need to be changed. Keep the final battle. It's the last mission. Keep the Sonja missions. They're tough but overall manageable. Change this though.
oh no , not this mission , i have really bad PTSD on this one
WayForward rigorously playtest their (own) games, they know Rivals will be super difficult without changes.
If Nintendo managers allow WayForward leniency, and not 100% faithfulness (which we've seen with the chapter order), they will change Rivals.
Since it's an optional mission anyway, maybe give andy the option to turn it down after the first attempt, but make it the same difficulty.
heres what the do after the final mission eagle challenges andy and you can choose yes or no yes is rivals and no just ends the game
inb4 there's simply a "refuse the challenge" option
I'm thinking keep the ai pretty much the same, but maybe improve the level layout a little bit😊
They shouldn't change it. You could just put an question "do you want to face the hardest mission ever or just finish campaign" and that's it.
You should do a video on HOW you would fix this mission.
They could choose a middle ground and make this mission optional in order to not lock Eagle if players made the same « mistake »
May be campaing will be more like wargroove where you can select the mission you want and changue difficulty?
I think they definetly are going to tune down AC Rivals, the AI will be definetly be smarter, so it would turn crap into full b*ship
I'm more curious if they'll chance the Colin mission in AW2 where you can win by doing nothing
In my opinion they need to rebalance the AI. On the one hand you should no longer be able to exploit it by making it always attack transport units. On the other hand the AI should be fully affected by fog of war the same way a human player would be. Letting the AI cheat is just fundamentally unfair.
Rivals itself shouldn't be changed but they should probably just let you bow out and count it as a win for the campaign if you got there accidentally since it's basically the akin to a super boss.
They should also probably change the story to make it so that it's clear that this is a war games exercise fought with dummy rounds and that soldiers aren't dying just as part of some test of manliness between Andy and Eagle. That was always my head-canon.
I never unlocked the rivals mission. Primarily because I always chose Max over Sami as he seemed way more powerful as a CO. I also started playing Advance Wars 2 shortly after beating the advance/hard mode campaign (as I did not start playing the original game on launch the second one was already out), thus I didn't bother looking up how to unlock the remaining CO's either.
I am legitimately worried about them improving the AI but leaving the maps the same in general. AW2’s normal campaign was tough enough for me with the crappy GBA AI. Yeah I’m bad at these games, sue me.
i tried to fight ac rivals as campaign sturm with hacks, and not even brute force with him can win
so i turned him into hachi on ten tonnes of coke zero and just got it over with cause i didnt want to deal with it
Yes, change the damn mission. It has no purpose being this hard.
Oh man, all those green earth bombers would have been super helpful in 2.
I really hope it’ll be changed. The amount of awfulness in that mission design is just insane.
Especially the advantage of fog of war for the IA
They should keep it the same, except the AI has to be made by Kartal. If you beat it, you unlock Dual Strike DLC.
I hope to make this one fair, RNG based levels aren't fun
I know missile chan was happy to help!
That Mission not only it should be Completely Optional, it Should NOT be nowhere near is difficult as it was in the original and also NOT based on Luck.
if they make the ai better, well...gg i suppose if they leave it the same. Messing with the ai was prob the only way to beat the advance campaign so if they just buff the ai of the game but leave the map the same, it might be unbeatable.
Just include an option to abort the mission without ending the entire run.
