The Special Bonds Between Nail Artists and Clients | See You Next Time | The New Yorker Documentary
“It’s personal and it’s intimate, that’s just my time.” Perfectly describes why I do my nails every Sunday. The week just doesn’t start right if I haven’t taken that time.
i appreciate the color grade of this more than you KNOW. beautiful
I know right!!
in Brazil, clients and nail artists are more like friends. they talk a lot about life and stuff, a really special bond
I don't know if anyone noticed but she was using a metrocard to slide under the acrylic nail to pop it off. Thought my nail lady in Chinatown was the only one who did this...very new york lol
It’s actually bad for your nails and makes them fragile. They’re suppose to soak them off and file the remaining off. I’m not a fan of many Asian nail salons because they don’t follow a lot of the nail salon protocol
Were the interpretive dance shots weird or am I just grumpy today
i thought obvious/ condescending, why such literal symbolism
Someone at the New Yorker wishes they majored in dance.
I had to skip through them, they were bugging me :/

It shows the ridiculous relationship between someone who would beat you for $25. You not grumpy
This was filmed so beautifully
Why is there an interpretive dance. What recent film grad made this
Lol! We love it tho
Thought it was just me like 🤔😆
I think this beautiful an Asian American and melanin American alliance , that's not spoken on much. When I was in Hawaii I saw how much each culture inspired each other . .more of that
Wow, thank you for a comment, Nichoal. I must say, as a Black and Asian woman myself, I definitely watched this thinking about the two cultures that I’m so familiar with, close to, and live in. And for real, it’s really special to see Black women and Asian women in this relationship that was portrayed, explained, and shown here.
@@broookehunter Did they even have a relationship? They didn't even speak to one another,.
@@everythingviral972 They didn’t have to
What a beautiful piece. It reminds me of Wong Kar Wai movies.
Very interesting relationship and beautiful to see.
I miss getting my nails done. 😞 Had been going to my girl for over three years!!!
I love my nail artists Susan and her husband Johnny. They are beautiful people inside and out! ❤️🥰
This is incredibly ASMR-like
This is very well shot! Great job!
I hate when they take your nails off with a MetroCard. It hurts!!
Girl get a new nail tech, you should never pop of nail enhancements!
@@courtney2590 absolutely! I learned my lesson and no longer go to salons that pry your nails off. It’s barbaric and insane!
Had it done once, never again and won’t step foot in that shop.
Aaaaah I hate long nails on my hands I feel like a dragon but I love the sparkles and colors so cute
Algo diferente, eso se agradece, y muy bien presentado.
the interlaying images of the intimate dance performances were phenomenal
It was pretentious and disruptive
Love this film, just DO NOT go to this salon for the sole fact your are never, EVER, suppose to PRY any type of nail enhancement.
It can be a spiritual experience.
I don’t understand the clips of the performers in between cuts of this doc.
Kiss brand has the most beautiful brand of fake nails for under 10 bucks. I haven't had my nails done in years. I even wore them to my wedding. It beats spending up to $100 for gel nails.
I love this
she said purr💅🏾
Most ordinary people simply want to have transactions with other people to make a living, and have neither time nor energy for intentional racism.
Doesn't happen in spanish harlem. There is almost no talking. Clients come in disrespectful, loud and obnoxious. They bully the nail girls. I'm glad I'm not into nails because that relationship is more weird than it seems.
Instead of ripping off Yumeji's Theme, why not just pay Shigeru Umebayashi's for usage.
What is up with all that weird dancing in between??🤔
Do they dance at the nail salon, too? This piece is incoherent. The story is not told at all. All over the place.
The subtitles 😂
Is there uncorrect translation? 👀
I like going in, getting my nails done and leaving. Having the tech to focus on doing a good job without talking is my goal. I usually wear earbuds.
Yay you? 🙄
I just left Quincy Massachusetts...🎸⭕🌌
Amazing
We live in a time and culture that cares more about what it looks like than about what it is like. - j q t -
Or, as Henry David Thoreau put it so eloquently, "I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes." - h d t -
She's been getting acrylics since she was 16! What!? Her nails look in very bad shape. I think it is time for a break
I used to get my nails done by a white chick who filed with & like a saw then spray with formaldehyde ?
hurting like crazy. The burning! She told me stop being a 'titty baby.'
On my way to next appt I was at an intersection, noticing a family turning into a shelter/food bank. An old beat up car, no air conditioning in the heat & humidity of Central FL.
I told her it was my last time getting my nails done. I'd get paper cuts every time & spraying an agent to make pain worse? Nope. When I told her why, she told ME I was an idiot.
I was always typing on the computer but nails slowed me down quite a bit. Personal hygiene involved contortions and soap. Try as I might, I never felt super clean.
Seeing others with such nails, I have seen the lurkage of gross things.
Yellow dyed's...Sly uncle passed 💅
been together for a long time, so... ^O^
Get this: Someone got paid to go to a nail-salon, take a 10 minute video, then edit it along with some stock video of dancers. Crazy ha?
If it’s so easy why don’t you do it?
Paid*
Ok but the interpretive dance was unnecessary and out of place to me. Or maybe I’m not cultured enough in regards to film to be able to appreciate it. Either way I just wasn’t feelin it
whats up with the people hugging and stuff
Why not?
It's showing how intimate this really can be cause you legit have sometime touching you and doing your nails that makes you want to come back again
And it's also trying to show you the bond really between the two
I think this person is talking about rona lol
This is bull! They don't like us! They just like our money!
Very stereotypical, this comment is racist you should be disgusted with yourself.
Grow up Le'oncia; people are people,; Look in the mirror!
I dislike it when people generalise. One bad experience doesn't mean everyone's bad
I said what I said!
There's nothing racist about telling the truth. Stop believing everything you see looking through your rose colored glasses!
maybe its just you.

Very tone deaf piece considering the documented excessive use of violence by Asian shop owners against their loyal African-American patrons, in New York City.
I agree, but it's also true that there is tensions because of the communities interaction with America in different ways. We dont respect how they move in America and they dont respect how we move in America. If we can respect each other and Asian people can get rid of thier anti blackness, and black people not get upset for Asian people being "sneaky and fake" we could have better relations. We both surving america it's just America prefers Asian because of proximity to whiteness and anti blackness.
Cinematically, this piece is beautiful. But the context is out of place. The Black & Asian dancer scenes were supposed to be symbolic, but in reality it comes off as tone deaf. There are present racial tensions between the two communities, and it is not all fuzzy and warm as this piece makes it to be. I’m a doc filmmaker/doc student myself, and so I appreciate the way it was shot. But, I believe that it is the duty of the filmmaker to document the truth. This ain’t it.
The Black Asian relationship is multilayered. What type of Asian are you talking about? Filipinos, Samoans and other South Asians are very close with Black people. In places like Oakland, San Francisco,LA and all over America, these communities are blended with many marriages, close family friendships, being like Family. Chinese, Korean and Japanese Asians are where the problems lie. They tend to be Racist against Black people and the other darker Asians I mentioned as well. So it boils down to wt-ness and the obsession with wt skin by these particular groups of Asians🙄
What's with the interspersing of Asian & Black female models getting all cuddly with each other?
❤️🍊💖🍌💕🥬💓🫐💖🍆💘
The edit of this video is weird.
