- Jenny Nguyen, 29, is the owner of the JennPaintt Nail Lounge in Downtown Los Angeles. Her star-studded clientele includes the likes of Hailey Bieber, Kourtney Kardashian, Paris Hilton and more. Jenny immigrated to the U.S. from Vietnam in 2016 with her three younger siblings. Within the span of 6 years, she has been able to help pay off all of her family’s debt with the help of her nail business, which brought in over $600k last year.

How I Built A Nail Business That Brings In Over $600,000 A Year
Loved the part where they highlight that the family’s immigration paperwork costs put them into debt. I don’t think enough Americans realize how expensive it is to immigrate and why not everyone can afford to immigrate.
Would love a longer video on her story because it’s not just hard work. She displays business acumen, she knows what it takes to motivate a team, be a good boss. She understands she needs to expand her business beyond just providing a service by starting her product line. She probably had to take a lot of rejections before she got any photographers to allow her to practice her craft on their photo shoots. It takes gumption on her part. She’s a go getter. Being a hard worker won’t get you far if you aren’t making the rights moves for yourself.
Also, never underestimate the determination of an immigrant who has to make it work because there are no backup plans. This is what drives her forward.
At least she did it the right way. We need more like her.
It's only expensive because the US charges 1k+ per application. We're talking about 1k USD, which is a big sum in their local currency. It's simple power economics really. For an American to emigrate? So much "cheaper" and easier. Passport privilege, nationality privilege, earned currency privilege, literally all in your favor.
The average vietnamese makes the equivalent of less than 300 USD a month. Think about that. Even with the higher cost of living, when your wage is also much higher, you still end up with much more global purchasing power than people in third world & developing countries, as a national of a Western country.
Exaxtly! Immigration costs A LOT. It's not just financial - a cultural difference, oftentimes a language barrier. It's a challenge.
I don't care if not everyone can afford it. Figure it out. Do not come here illegally. My family was poor and immigrated LEGALLY. Do not make excuses for those breaking the law. Also educate yourself. It is majority fighting age men coming here illegally. I know because I live in Texas and have seen who is coming over.
@@Grwenhuhc exactly figure it out, the dad made a big sacrifice came over in 2012 saved up money probably working labor jobs and eventually got enough to bring his kids over.

I love her mindset about treating her employees right. Workers will work hard if they feel like their work is being valued and appreciated, and they're treated with respect. Good for her for building such a successful business.
Ask any boss and they will rhapsodize over how their employees love working there and it's like a family. These comments are full of gullible, naive people.
Compensation drives performance.
Starting a business in an expensive city is very difficult, and even more so when English is not your first language. This is an incredible achievement.

It is unbelievable that she did all this in few years. Went to university without knowing english, dropped out , then teaching and magically becomes this celebrity nail person.... this story doesn't add up for me. Unless..... whatever!!! 😅
Just go to disenfranchised communities like Black neighborhoods and sell weave and do nails.

good job. The nail business is very saturated, especially in dense areas like LA. For her to step foot in a business which has matured 15 years ago and still coming out on top is no easy feat!
15 years? My aunt started back in 1983.
Saturation in big cities had my family move to rural Louisiana. It's still a big money businesses.

@@phoso1 and your point is? There is a different between when it start and when it became mature and overly saturated. Back in 1983, there are probably less than 100 Vietnamese nail shops in the entire US. Now there are literally 25,000-40,000 nail shops throughout the country.
Especially paying 10K in monthly rent. That's crazy!

Congratulations to Jenny! The nail business is a multi-billion dollar industry. And it has helped so many of my fellow Vietnamese find a financial footing. It's smart that she found her specific niche--vegan. Because a lot of nail businesses are not concept-driven.

I’ve been to this nail salon before as a walk in and had zero expectations…it’s been 2 years now and these are hands down the best nails i’ve ever gotten and the staff is always amazing 100% recommend this place…had no idea about the back story makes me want to be a more loyal customer

Not as glamorous at it seems. She is right about that. 15 employees being paid the California minimum wage of $16/hr for say 30 hrs/week/per year = $374,000 hypothetically. If you subtract that by the $10,000/mo lease ($120,000/year) for the shop rental then the net is $95,000 before any other expenses. Hypothetically. Definitely respectable and the growth potential is good. However, these videos makes it seem like people are netting these flashy incomes.

Hi hater. You sound like a dummy living under a rock. Employees don’t get paid an hourly wage. It’s straight profit splitting. Mens haircuts in LA are $50-75. How much you think girls are spending in a nail salon? It’s not just services, they also have merchandise sales. Clearing 600k profit is nothing for a business this size.
Don’t forget her mortgage or her own rent that she pays thanks for posting this you’re absolutely correct. People never wants to talk about exactly what they’re making. It’s always for “show”

yeah the numbers aren't adding up here. $600k revenue but the rent is $120k, then you have loan repayments, utilities, insurance and the massive one - wages. I can't see any way this is profitable. @@hannesRSA

I hate that the media labels people like paris hilton and kylie kardashian as self made.
Not to take away their success..they do have their own very successful businesses which i respect.
But this woman in this video is truly what “self made” means to me - someone who became something big from nothing..i also come from nothing and havent made it big yet..but i hope one day i can be like her.
This is so humbling & an inspiration for entrepreneurship. Even looking at the timeline, it took a decade (granted 2020-21 restrictions) for the entire family to be complete again. ❤ She is amazing!! Her drive is so focused.

My mom did nails for 35 years and made some decent money but she also breathed in a lot of chemicals and nearly worked herself to death trying to accommodate clients. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in July and it’s likely that it’s from the chemicals that she breathed in. She’s thankfully still here despite being on death’s door numerous times now but seeing how sick she’s been, I would not advise anyone to go into doing nails. The money was nice but it’s not worth it imo in retrospect.
That's really heartbreaking. I appreciate you trying to warn others from seeing their loved ones go down the same road.
What if you wear some type of mask to prevent you from breathing in said chemicals
I would love to see cute gas/particle masks being a norm in nail salons, now that you mention it… you know how when you get an x-ray done, they drape you in a metal apron and run and hide in another room to take a snapshot? Because I fully believe those chemicals contributed to your Mom’s ill health, I can’t stand being inside a nail salon with zero fresh air flow nor dust collectors. If the masks were pink and cute, I believe it would be a hit and no one would be scared away by it.

What an inspirational story. The best part of the story for me is how much she cared about her family and siblings. Her parents must be so proud of her. I wish her continued success with her business and in life. If an immigrant who came to this country with no money and limited English can succeed, I don't want to hear any excuses from those who were born here complain about how impossible it is.

@@ArianaBerkeley I personally know friends whose parents came to this country with only a one-way plane ticket, a few hundreds bucks in their pockets, and all of their possessions in a suitcase. After many years of hard work, they built a successful fashion clothing business and bought a million dollar home in Encino about 25 years ago. You can imagine how much that house is worth today.
I have a relative who came to America and started out as a dishwasher in a restaurant. He didn't know English, so he studied and memorized the dictionary in his spare time. He eventually saved enough money to invest. Many years later, he bought several apartments and houses. When my family came to his country, we rented one of his homes in L.A..
How is it possible to move to the U.S. with little or no money? People borrowed money from friends and relatives. They spent the next 20 to 25 years paying off the debt a little at a time. Since they typically work 7 days/week with no vacation, they hardly went out or spent money buying useless things. They toil all day so their children can go to top universities and have better opportunities in life. I can go on and on with similar stories. You just need to open your eyes and mind and not assume Asians people are born rich or smart. Their success has more to do with their attitude about the value of education, work ethics, and the willingness to sacrifice and forgo instant gratification for a better future.

I do the books for my mom's nail salon and she brings in 1/3rd the revenue with 4 employees and pays 1/3rd the rent. Jenny here has 3x the revenue and 3x the staff and her rent is 3x. Her take home ain't much. $600k revenue, 60% will go to employees which means there is 240k left. half of that is rent so there's 120k. Half of that is easily nail supplies and maintenance. Our girl Jenny here brings in $60k plus tips...in downtown LA. Hope her side gig is doing better.

My other half works for woman who made millions by turning a similar vertical into a luxury.

I can't imagine how hard it must have been for the family to immigrate without their mother. She must have been so happy to finally reunite her family because of her nail business.
Green cards can take that long. Legal immigration process can take years or even decades.
Depend on country, for Vietnam it take 14-15 years for the process.

There is an article attached to this video which explains all the details. She got her license for $9k online and it took a few weeks to complete. She started out on social media such as tik tok and instagram doing some free nails which got her tracking then was able to make a bit of money which started getting her jobs. Using this as a springboard I imagine she put together a business and received a business loan to start up her shop.

These nail women are the hardest working people in the world. I have a Vietnamese friend that owns her own salon. She puts in 10 hrs a day at work and then goes home and cooks for recreation and to relax. Not an ounce of fat on her. The work ethic is amazing ...

@amanifields464 remember she did social media. She does work for celebrities so I am sure that helped. She probably went viral. They get paid after awhile depending on how much viral videos you do. Even though it may not make you rich it may be enough for whatever she needs.
Not everyone is as lucky doing business like her. It's karma. She's been a kind person who always takes care of others (cause), in return, god gave her wisdom and luck when she determines to do anything (effect).

The customer isn’t always right, we as employees and the company have a policy and we know what we are doing with our work, not them. We don’t need insults to tell us how to do our job. What a wonderful person. An important lesson in her story is to see how dificulties build resilience and make us become a better person. The obstacles of life are only hard if you never had bigger problems to cope with. Life in Brazil, my country, is hard, but I've seen some people coming from poorer areas in Brazil or from other poorer countries who said that life here is easy because, in their own words, "you only have to work". What a humbling lesson. I think she would totally agree with that about US too.

Does anyone else feel like there's a ton of information missing? How did someone without a college degree teach? How did she manage to pay the immigration debt, pay for three years of her schooling, pay for her siblings' schooling, and afford $10,000 rent on a studio working as a substitute teacher? Like obviously she worked hard, but a lot of immigrants work hard, and 99.999% of them don't end up making 600K.
