Just to be clear, JavaScript and Java are completely different things. JavaScript is a programming language that runs in web browsers, Java is what RuneScape/MineCraft/This game are made with, it's for like "Desktop" applications. There's nothing inherently wrong with using Java, but being that it's just a programming language and not a game engine it means they either need to reinvent the wheel or lack a lot of features. Love the content, just wanted to be that guy in the comments.
Just to be clear, all game engines are just programming languages with a fancy UI on top and pre-built features / tools. What the Haven&Hearth team have essentially done is built their own custom game engine based on Java, this is appealing to many devs as it allows them to have full control over every step of the process and build features from the ground up specifically for their games, it also usually means less compatibility issues or development headaches as well as more optimised performance. It also means you are not reliant on the game engines devs to implement features you need, for example Ray Traced Shadows, many devs had to wait ages in order for third-party games engines to introduce it or to add it post launch in patches, whereas studios with their own custom engines like DICE with their Frostbite engine are capable of just implementing the feature themselves, instead of waiting.
And it's not like UE5 actually can do what this does. This is a very light-weight engine made to build a large sandbox experience with tons of people, a fully persistent online world, while downloading all assets on demand. The bare bones UE5 project with nothing in it takes more than this entire game with all its assets and code. Though the devs made it very clear they hate working with Java, and it's all over the (open) source code. I doubt they'd think C++ is a better choice, though. In any case, the main point of the Java was to open a website, click a button and play anywhere.

I started playing Haven and Hearth way back in World 8 or 9? I think? Back in 2016. Its a great MMO and really has some unique experiences. The feel you get after killing your first Boar in a current world is amazing, I know people normally cheese it in a boat but in a straight up fight its the best thing ever. One of the unique experiences was when me and a friend made a house and a palisade near afew friendly neighbours but we were alerted that a zerg of people were killing in the area, my friend didn't make it back in time and got killed, a day after that happened we pack up and moved. From then on, I have a rule of thumb; always travel at least two hours away from spawn in any direction. Also as small as they may be; never try to fight ants as your first combat experience, they will mess you up.

The first public release was in 2009 :) It's still in continuous development by the same two guys. Though technically this is the second "version", built on a new 3D client with deformable terrain and all that (the original only had mining in caves). This is never going to be a mainstream success, so why bother updating the website? It's proper XHTML at least :P
If you're up for reviewing this, you should look into 'Salem the online mmo'. Originally created by the same team long ago, before being sold off for someone else to pursue, however, it maintains this level of survival mmo, but in a less pvp focus and more pve adventure. You'll find a lot of similarities, but it's more enjoyable on a user friendly level, especially knowing how the combat works, and all while still maintaining nearly the same level of depth and secrecy that you enjoyed here.
I love H&H! If you want it really hardcore spawn at the winter. Snakes and ants wont follow you to water. Healing is by walking in the swamp getting leaches on your body. They will drain the red health bar, but have a chance to raise the yellow health bar. I had a chest full of leaches just for healing. You should see the game after reset when communities are raised by working together and people focusing on specific works.
running it on java holds it back, and server wipes can make it have less appeal to those who want their time with the game to feel valuable. having to re-grind not only upon death, but server wipe upon success, may get old after a while depending what you're looking for in the games you play. If you're all about the grind and don't mind re-grind then this game would be great for you
I played this game years ago before it was semi-3D and when it was a fixed map with almost no water except at spawn. The crafting timers make more sense when the game is busier. Gives you something extra to guard. Also it used to be the case that some processes (steel making for one) required a multiple people to keep the process going unless you woke up in the night IRL.
I was super obsessed with this game back in the day, even the fear of being hunted by the russian clans was a thrill, didnt even recognuze it from the thumbnail lol
I recognise where you spawned, that's the Lobberg Thingwall. My base is/was a couple of lakes SE of there, between a lake and the coast feel free to loot it there might still be some stuff there.
@@TheAnon03 I’m going to wait for the fresh start I think , it’s been fun learning the game but I’m looking forward to the chaos of other players , cheers for the offer though
@@sawmanUK Yeah I'm waiting for the restart as well, work got in the way and I wasn't able to put enough time into the game to keep my base up. Is there still a stone house just a bit NE of the Thingwall? I built that too to act as a trading storage house but I never got around to using it.
The player count thing is real. I purposefully avoid the game around wipe since the most dangerous animals in the game are not the bears or the moose, it's other people! :D So you actually picked a great time to learn the game. It just has such a steep learning curve, if you don't have the H&H wiki on your second monitor there is no way of figuring out things by yourself.

OMG! I love the art style!
I love that you take shots at new world every chance you get lmao
And why should not unlike in new world they land
Nice to see more HnH content on yt, can't wait for the steam release
I love H&H! If you want it really hardcore spawn at the winter.
Snakes and ants wont follow you to water.
Healing is by walking in the swamp getting leaches on your body. They will drain the red health bar, but have a chance to raise the yellow health bar. I had a chest full of leaches just for healing.
You should see the game after reset when communities are raised by working together and people focusing on specific works.
i hope youll remember your main fans once youll be famous
You just opened a bag of memories man.
running it on java holds it back, and server wipes can make it have less appeal to those who want their time with the game to feel valuable. having to re-grind not only upon death, but server wipe upon success, may get old after a while depending what you're looking for in the games you play. If you're all about the grind and don't mind re-grind then this game would be great for you
The way he runs and stands looks like he couldn't afford a backpack and decided to use his ass as a storage area.
I played this one as well and it was indeed crazy hardcore..
Omg I remember playing this game on the browser when I was a little kid
The player count thing is real. I purposefully avoid the game around wipe since the most dangerous animals in the game are not the bears or the moose, it's other people! :D So you actually picked a great time to learn the game. It just has such a steep learning curve, if you don't have the H&H wiki on your second monitor there is no way of figuring out things by yourself.
hello, i just found your channel from a daoc video, ps screw camelot unchained and liked this video too. because i know comments help, instead of searching have you tried asherons call? that was my jam until like 02 do to life then i came back in like 09 and it was crazy. im so sad its gone now, ive messed around on private servers but the vibes just arent the same. love your content and i just found you!
Love your chanel, keep you great work with this kind of content
the ants attack sound is literally hydralisks from starcraft1 lol
this game is really good, it makes me feel like a kid again, learning and discovering things....
Yo, what were the first 2 games in the intro? Nice to see different content about MMOs than just videos about "next big MMO list" or "this new MMO is insane..if it comes out and it is not a dissappointment in the end". Got yourself a sub
Wow, I played it like 10 years ago with few friends and heard many good things about it since.
Bro getting molly whopped by the dear is the first video to make me actually laugh in a while!
My first thought was Eve: Online, that game will tear you down to the core
HELL YES! NEW SAWMANUK VIDEO!
Video starts 3:25 Lol
this game is fun and not even closed to runescape
Looks like a blast!
Wow this is a blast from the past.
That sponsor transition had me rolling lmao
This looks like fun, maybe I'll try it when I am caught up on my other games lol
Honestly , it’s a pretty decent time waster , especially if they keep it free
o i remember playing this, walking 10 h in a direction to find a rabit that never apeared so i could not start playing the game and starved, twice.
i love some sunday morning sawman. ty for the great videos.
The reason no one heard of this gem is that they charge a monthly sub for it... back when I played it years ago...
oh haven hearth. I loved it. Played it for a long time!
Sprucecap spotted, bring out the siegema! Haven & Hearth will always be one heck of a hardcore game that I will probably never touch again after W14. Too stressing for my liking after pvping for realms and bases. It was fun deleting everyone's characters with a sick Q490 B12 though lol.
oh man, we getting a new runescape like game in 2024. im ready to grind endlessly and cry after dying
Been playing for years, it’s definitely addictive. Need to have some self control with your schedule if you decide to play.
Holy shit, I remember playing this WAY back in the day! Been playing a shitload of UO Outlands so I might check it out again!
underrated sandbox harcore pvp mmo.
MAN, that piano music and song around 26 minutes ... Is that from the movie Perfect Sense? I think? Either way that movie still gives me feelings and I seem to be the only one that's seen it lol, least here.
