  • In this video I show you guys how to push start your bike if it has a low battery or for some reason it just doesn't want to turn over. Sorry about the brightness, I am always fighting with my lighting and I seem to go from too dark to too light in all my videos haha.

    Key start, shift to 2nd gear, pull clutch, push bike, release clutch. push starter (or just rev throttle), bike should start then quickly pull clutch and jump on the bike.

      Or if you're lucky like me
      Hold clutch, it into second
      Push dead bike down hill gently and let it pickup speed while riding
      Rev throttle

    After you posted video 12 years back, I watched to know exactly how we balance the bike while punching to jump start it, because whenever I push it I feel like dropping the bike on the other side.
    So was it's definitely.
    Thanks for your work.

    Luckily, I havent had to do this in a long time, but I always jump on the bike just before I pop the clutch, this way your weight is on the rear wheel giving it traction, and the bike cant pull away from you once you pop the clutch. I never hit the starter button either, getting a running start and popping the clutch should be enough to start the engine. I really do miss kick starters as a backup to the stater button, besides they were cool to use when people were watching.

    I see a lot of people tip the bikes over trying this too, when my battery died on my ninja I got my truck and used jumper cables and jump started the motorcycle, which also works for smaller people that have a hard time holding the weight of the bike up.

      you can also start it by your hand by center standing the bike and turn the wheel (it should be in 2nd or 3rd gear)...do it with caution... if that wont start easily you might need to increase the idle speed and readjust when it starts...

    On my 250r, I can't push start in first at all, it locks the rear tyre and skids to a halt - even tried it off a hill. Also, it's impossible to get it into second because of the "positive neutral finder" it has - so what I find is I start to walk with the bike - when it is moving I am able to kick it up into second (which is a bit tricky while you're moving), then pop the clutch and it starts :)

    logic,
    rear wheel drives the chain drives front sprocket front sprocket shaft to gearbox gearbox to clutch clutch to crankshaft.
    release the clutch and your rear wheel will drive the pistons,
    dont forget to switch you contact to on haha
    when changing gears of your bike whilst not running, push it back and forth. This way the (schakelvorken) will push the (tandwielen) into place.
    sorry i do not know the english term of these two.
    From a motorcycle mechanic in holland!

    Thanks, nice of you to share your experience.
    You can also sit on the bike if you're fortunate enough to be on a hill or have someone give you a push. I've also waddled along after straddling the bike. For me it feels safer to be sitting on the bike.
    Also, similar to a push start on a car, I just make sure the key is in the 'on' position and let the clutch out once I'm up to speed but haven't had to engage the starter, leaving me with one less thing to have to do to get it started.

    on most bikes, if the clutch is out and its in first, it WILL NOT let the starter turn over. I didnt hear the starter turn at all in the video on this bike. it is just getting started from the weight of the bike turning over the engine and then firing. its pretty easy to do. anyone who rides should learn this trick.

    @gsxelf correct , if you jump on the bike and "bump" it i.e run , swing you leg over , sit on the bike with it rolling then stand up on the pedals and sit down pretty fast while releasing the clutch at the same time , you will do it "safely" because you will have better control of the bike

  • @SharonzachariasLouis
    @SharonzachariasLouis 5 років тому

    I tried it many times since I started motor cycling. Best way is turn on the kill switch and turn the key on.Then find a place where the motorcycle is easy to roll on.Change the gear on to first gear then get on the bike ,start pushing forward when it starts moving enough fast then release the clutch.100 % works...

    I just had to push start my 07 FZ6 last night when it cut off on me at the traffic light and it wouldn't come back on :(. Luckily the crossing street was going downhill, so I just sat on the bike and pushed it with my legs on the 1st gear then released the clutch, gradually. It didn't start right away until the 3rd attempt - I guess I didn't have enough speed at first. Now I have to figure out if it's the alternator or the battery, but at least I am now back home with my bike :)

    Before pushing it, you have to have it in HIGHEST GEAR with the clutch
    pressed of course, push it, then release clutch ; and press the clutch again to keep engine alive.
    Higher gear will make the engine turn more, and bump is less too.
    Easier push start.. Lower gear will resist turning the engine and bump more.

  • @steelsporty
    @steelsporty 11 років тому

    Agreed on not using the starter motor. Once you've got a bit of speed up pushing the bike, leap on the bike sidesaddle (you may want to practice riding side-saddle before you have to do this, so you feel balanced and comfortable doing that, and don't fall off to the right!). As your weight hits the saddle, dump the clutch. The jarring of your weight will stop the rear wheel from skidding and turn the motor over. Be ready to pull the clutch lever in immediately the engine fires.

    ok for everyone who is about to try this dont!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    you dont press the electric start while moving (its dead remember :D) it could damage the starter motor.. just put it in second, run as fast as you can and jump on the bike!!!! dont just walk beside it!! then dump the clutch out and wen the engine starts turning pull the clutch back in and give a little throttle!

  • @etraderx11

    I also used to push-start my 99 Bandit (long time gone) and it was a lot easier than my FZ6. I would only need a very little speed to get that thing going, although I don't remember if I was doing it on 1st or 2nd gear. I did my FZ6 at 1st gear last night - and it was hard. Now that I am thinking, I should've tried it at 2nd - it should have less resistance and make it easier to crank the engine, but I could be wrong. Maybe I'll try that next. :)

    @hootini88 that depends on the piston's size and the compression ratio, the bigger the piston and comprssion, the more speed you have to gain so the force is enaugh to move the pistons.
    P.S. I didn't say that you have to push the bike to an exact speed.

    @zombies8alaska no , you shouldnt do it every time , you should bump start it to get you back home then find the problem and fix it. I dont reccomend trying to bump start it all the time (thought it is possible) but its just an inconvieniece , and for what? the price of a trickle charger? If your bike starts with a kick start you shouldnt have to do that tho , ever , because no electricity is used in starting the bik (no electrically generated spark)

  • @kutsy3785

    Just for the OP's information, you were not able to put it into second because the bike was stationary.
    Alot of kawasaki models have this feature where when stationary, you can only put it into neutral and first gear, not higher. This is to make it easier for people to put neutral instead of going into 2nd gear when shifting up.
    Since you pushed a bike slightly, you were able to put it into 2nd gear.

    Ya you said release the clutch and "hit the starter." Should have said "roll on throttle." I also do not recommend the off the seat method, too much can go wrong. Best way by far is to have a helper push the bike with you on it and walking it too.

    When I saw the Title, had to see you were going to put into second, not first. I like to get a good run, hop on Bike then let out the Clutch. Maybe drop my butt down hard on seat, at same time as letting out the Clutch, if a dirt road, or sand on the road so tire doesn't skid. Seems safer than letting clutch out, standing on the side. Better Control, for me anyway. One slip of the throttle may get the Bike away from you.

  • @MrSlowestD16
    @MrSlowestD16 12 років тому

    Why it doesn't want to go into 2nd? lol Sequential gear boxes rely on them being moving. If you try to shift gears on a bike while it's still, what you do is: Put light pressure up/down, roll the bike one direction or the other. It'll click right in, yes, even if the clutch is disengaged. You're not supposed to be trying to shift gears with it stopped...so you move it a little to mitigate this :).

    This video will trick you.
    He uses the aid of the battery. So its not a TRUE PUSH START! His battery was not completly dead. It turned the motor over, but not enough to keep it running.
    If your battery won't even turn over the motor. Put your bike in 3rd gear, run fast as you can holding the clutch, pop the clutch (hold throttle slightly) and jump on the bike. I noticed its easier to push start in 3rd gear than 2nd. And the rpm will be low enough that the bike won't take off.

    Lol. Push the starter button after your rolling huh? Go ahead Einstein. All you're doing is burning your starter up after you engage the clutch. WOOO HOOOO! Plus the whole running with the bike thing is halarious.
