I am watching your Videos since the beginning, but this is the first time I am meeting this man Johnny FD and he is a mighty warm and charming and appealing guy! What a honorable man you are, Johnny! I am so glad you took us home with you and you and your parents allowed us to visit! I can understand their belongings are precious to them, it is the world they had to create after having to leave everything behind. It gives them comfort and the memories connected to every piece makes them happy. Your mother did a wonderful job arranging all very tastefully. Please tell her I enjoyed the visit and I love her home!
I'd say the past two videos are probably the best so far! It's not as much about an adventure as maybe about regular life. Some folks in the east, maybe think that everyone in the west might be living a grand life, but in reality everyone has hardships. It's all about how hard you will work to overcome them and improve your life and surroundings. Keep up the good work dude✌️
I can totally relate to what you were saying about families growing up poor and now wanting to keep everything. I come from Mexican parents who grew up really poor and I can tell it's hard for them to let go of things. Even the living room looks similar. There's only three people living in the house but they have seating for 12, "just in case they get visitors".
It's really touching to see your sweet parents, your home, food, your garden, there in SF, Johnny FD. Sincere thanks for sharing your nostolgic memories with us. 😊😉
Nice tour of your down to earth family, I see the values they installed in you, and how you love and help them the best you can. I think it was good you visited home.
Johnny I know you don't need our validation here or anything dude, but you are a good son to help your Mom and Dad like that. They seem really nice and still proud parents! :)
Very touching and real. Thanks for having the confidence to share it with us. After having downsized from a house to a condo once already, I don't envy whoever it is, when the time comes, to go through all the stuff in your parents house and decide what to throw out. Will probably end up being your sister given you will be out of the country. They have accumulated stuff over many decades, like many families...and it shows!
Bless your parents. My parents grew up poor, and we grew up working class. Amazing how much your Chinese retiree parents in San Francisco house looks like my European retiree parents house in middle America. They hold on to everything! I always wished my parents would get out of the frozen tundra and move south to Arizona or Texas, for more sun and cheaper taxes. I'm sure your folks are sitting on a goldmine if they bought that house for $200k. I wonder what it's worth in SF now?!? They could buy a bigger house with a pool in Florida, have less chance of getting mugged as well, but I know how it is. You're a good son, Johnny. You're parents are proud, you can tell.
My family went through a similar life moving to Albany CA from France. My father did whatever work he could find as he was in his 60's and my mother worked at I Magnin in SF. They scraped together $2K for a down payment on a house in Albany.......My family home just sold 6 months ago for $1.1 million, my parents bought it for $18K in 1961, and no, unfortunately we did not own it any more!
Absolutely the sweetest video. Thank you so much for telling us about your childhood. The love and respect for your parents came through loud and clear. I'm developing a new appreciation for you.
Very good video Johnny and I understand how your parents are being 73 myself.I used to collect and hoard stuff but had a rethink and got rid of a lot of clutter, but I can understand your folks as when you reach our age you tend to get very set in your ways.
Johnny, I was born and raised in San Francisco (1949 to 1971). Several of my high school friends lived in the Sunset District. My home was on Delmar St. in the Haight-Ashbury District. My mother had to sell her beautiful house because San Francisco's real estate taxes were higher than her retirement income. San Francisco was an absolutely beautiful city to grow up in, sadly it is no more.
@Al I also grew up in San Francisco - went to George Washington HS. Several of my friends lived in the Sunset District. Memories! Sorry to hear about your mom having to sell.
@@tomikainitaly Hi. I'm curious if you stayed in SF. In 1971 I left SF, went to Southwest Louisiana where I met my future wife. Finally ended up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I'm 73 so I remember 10 cent DC comics, 5 cent candy bars, and being able to spend the day at the Golden Gate Park museums without crowds of tourists. I also remember the amusements at the Clif House. For that I will always have very fond memories of San Francisco.
A lot of respect for you my friend for supporting your parents like you do! Made me think of my own parents and the sacrifices they have made for me and my brother. God bless you
We have the same hoarder mentality amongst my parents and grandparents generation in Finland. We laugh it off as the "war mentality" from the war times when everything was in shortage and you had to save and use each thing as long as you possibly could. I inherited it a little bit, but it's not as bad.
My parents are English (from England) and were born right after WWII. They find it very hard to throw things away as they were taught to save and reuse. Nothing gets thrown away if it can have another purpose.
Yeh my grandparents who were alive during the war in England were exactly the same. My Grandad served in North Africa he also had a allotment in his back Garden and used to grow everything. Potatoes, carrots, cabbages parsnips even some Chickens. That’s why when you look at postwar council houses in the U.K they all have huge back gardens. Because the government wanted to encourage families to have their allotment or a small holding, so if war ever broke out again families could be more self reliant.
Thanks for the tour. I've always wondered what a family house in SF looks like. I've only known single people with apartments in SF. None of it looks cluttered or messy-- it just looks comfortable and lived in. It must be so nice to still have your parents, living in your childhood home. Enjoy your visit and go see them often.
It's quite heart wrenching to throw away personal belongings which has so many memories attached to it, it's like ripping your chest apart because that's life written all over it...
What fantastic parents you have Johnny ,i can see a warm , loving and caring mum and dad , wonderful family home too, you are blessed , Good family is precious , thank you for sharing a little of you life with us all 🙂
Your house reminds me alot like my parents house when I visit in CA, my dad is the same age has a garden with figs that he barely maintains because of his age, when I go back to my bedroom it never feels the same, its a weird feeling.
Great Video Johnny FD, I remember the first time I ever seen you, I think Bald and Bankrupt was doing a trip to Belarus I think ? And he said he was taking in his muscle and he was a bad man. That was when he introduced you.
I think you had a nice upbringing, a home, and a family that loved you. We really don't need more than that in life. Yes, as we age we have chapters to look back on in our personal book of life. One day, things that have stayed the same will change, and it can be sad, like losing family members. It's important to embrace the people in our lives every day.
Really cool video.... That looking back, choked me up a little thinking about my parents home and all the treasures...and memories. Hope you find a great women and get to start your own family as well.
You're honestly one of my favorites Johnny. Being mexican and seeing how you do it all for your parents makes me want to do it all for my single parent mother that has raised me. You're awesome man! Also, trying to save $350 for an oculus.. 😂
My son is twenty and so lost with the changes, he is an entrepreneur at heart, until someone stole his shoe collection few months ago. Four years in makin and crushed his spirit ...keeping pressing the world is digital and to understand QFS and blockchain, inside and out. What is it you do to be able to help your parents. You are a wonderful soul, thank you for being a good human🌈❤️
Thanks Johnny. Fun to see a little peak into your world. Your parents sound like very wonderful people. We can all see a little of ourselves in what you shared. Your parents look so young.
Amazing story... Johnny I have a new found respect for you just because you help your parents... To me there is nothing that will ever be so important as family. Its truly the wealth in this life. To many memories my friend. Best wishes and safe travels.
I totally love your video Johnny. I just found it. I too am a Bay Area native. I grew up in Pacifica in the 70s. My wife is Korean and she grew up in Chinatown. Thank you so much for sharing your life. Your friend, Steve.
Thank you for the tour of you childhood home and ALL the SF videos. Have enjoyed getting your perspective on current state of the city. Sad, distressing in some ways, but a lot the same from what I remember. Used to live there in mid to late 90's. Much different time (and much cheaper!), but not without problems then, too. Kudos to you for the respect and love you give your mom and dad. A mark of excellent character. :) Related note: While I lived IN SF in mid 90's, grew up south of there. We'd come up all the time when I was young. When I was a teenager, we'd sneak up for punk shows. You think SF has issues now, nothing beats the gnarly scene of trying to see 80's, early 90's punk shows (east bay, too). SF deeply changed in the late 90's with the first dot com boom, and subsequent bust. SF has always had boom/bust cycles since forever. Ebb and flow.
Thanks for sharing another part of your life, Johnny. I see many similarities between you and my CAL roommates that grew up in SF Chinatown. Family is everything so hold on to those memories. Even now when I think back on my College years I remember our Dimsum group lunches in SF. Be safe as you return to Ukraine. I hope to finally make it to Bangkok this year. Cheers, Bryan
Hmmm, lotus soup! My parents are from Taiwan too. They came to the US in the 70's with so little and yet they've built such a nice life for themselves and for us as kids through their hard work and determination. This is why the US is still the land of opportunity! All of us immigrant kids owe our immigrant parents a great debt of gratitude.
Wow Johnny your family is so typical of the Asians in the US, their struggles and hardships and their ultimate achievements. Much respect for your parents and their hard work. My family is exactly the same ....i feel like I'm watching a mirror of my own family. Thank you for sharing.
We are really enjoying your San Francisco series. I grew up in the same neighborhood and also attended Herbert Hoover and Lincoln High School (glad they didn’t change the school name as considered last year!). I attended 30 or so years prior to you however.
Johnny thanks for sharing where u grew up and letting us meet ur mom and dad. I have actually been to your neck of the woods and walked on ocean beach--great area!!!
A very honest, heartfelt video. Enjoyed seeing you reminiscing and the memories come to the surface. Something everyone experiences when returning to the old home...memories that seem so far away but are still so close. Cherish them and the new ones you've made on this return trip to visit your parents. Safe travels and good health to your parents and you....
Not many youtubers open up and show their family. you say cluttered I say a home full of memories, imagine if you got back and it was sll cleared. My mum and dad's house was the same . And that's what you have my bro a home open for you whenever you visit home . . Wish my mum n dad where still here :( Great video 🙏👍
My buddy, he is an avid Star Wars collector, and as a result he still owns a Laserdisc player. But yeah, I agree with you Johnny, not everyone owns a Laserdisc, when I was growing up in France and Lithuania, my family did not have Laserdisc player, but we had VCR though.
Nothing could be richer than proud hard working parents raising a successful sibling and receiving the love back for doing so. Congrats to you and your parents. Nice family Johnny.
Randomly had your videos pop up. Turns out we grew up in the same community. It’s amazing how similar our childhood homes are. Not sure how you convinced your mom to let us get a glimpse into her home. My mom would never allow such a thing. Thank you for showing me there were other kids who grew up with childhoods very similar to mine. Life is always full of different seasons and adventures. I wish you all the best in yours.
My aunt and uncle bought this type of house on Uloa. It is a great house to this day. They have a style with the covered arch entry patio. One huge bedroom downstairs by the landing. Two huge bedrooms upstairs. Skylights. Tall ceilings. Corner fireplace. Huge kitchen with dining. The garage holds like 2-1/2 cars …tandem..the length of the house. A sweet classic SF house.
Your parents are so warm and hardworking. Looks like they provided such a stable environment for you to grow. When I had my own daughter I learned that if you provide stability, your children will have a secure attachment and feel confident venturing out into the world because they know you will be there when they need you, and they could predict your behavior. Looks like your parents did this for you since you have traveled the world and felt secure doing this. This also reminds me of my Asian friend in Chicago. Asian guys in America with immigrant parents can struggle to find their place. He said he struggled with girls too, but just needed to grow a bit older and more confident. Looks like you have found yourself as well.
Thanks for sharing. I really think they should replace the TV stand with something more modern and take that 60" TV! I know change is rough but their QOL will drastically improve.
Man I wish I had that Hifi setup. Older people know the value in old stuff and waste. They worked hard to buy it and it reminds them of the good days .
Reminds me of my upbringing and my parents - both passed away within a year of each other in 2019 and 2020. They were set in their ways, had similar living room TV and stereo style stuff, and cluttered. I miss them terribly.
Hey Johnny I don’t know how I found your videos! I am in Sydney Aust. Your parents are so cute. Love that they have so much fruit and call you to have a look at their haul. My 14 year old son has an oculus too. My parents are in their 70s and garden a lot too. You are very child like which is great and I can’t believe you have so many different levels to your life and so open about them. I Hope there is peace in Ukraine. I have two great grandparents born in Ukraine! Good luck I hope you find what you are searching for!!
The amount of stuff in your parents is similar to my parents who are south asian. I think a big part of it is that they are actually not materialistic but they grew up in poverty, so they hold on to memories contained within the objects and they value the items more. And when they buy eg furniture it's for the long-term and not just while fashionable. Even when items are not used anymore they keep it in case it's needed later, rather than feeling the need to replace with the most 'up to date' versions. I think it's interesting and something v. endearing about that!
Thank you for sharing a small piece of your life. I know the feeling and have family members the same way. I grew up in the South Bay and I have had a similar experience as you did growing up.
Its nice you share you early life with us and get a peek into your family and how you grew up. Those connections are always part of us. It takes some inner work to write books as laying it on the line if it flies or crashes. I'm too shy about it even though my friends have been pressuring me for years to write about my life. I understand going through self actuation has it moments, yet it takes some drive to become. Being different people at different times opens our minds, helps center us and I think deepens our understanding of self to the rest of the world. Very cool......Thanks for sharing it!
Grew up in Reno...SF was popping in the 70's and 80's when we would make monthly road trips...Candlestick Park for Giants and Niner games, concerts, horse track, etc....Today I would not set foot in that place....Thanks for the videos.By the way if that yearbook is Lincoln HS Mustangs, we at Reno High School played them in a basketball tournament in 1975-76 timeframe. Cool.
This was good Johnny! You are doing good for your parents. The hoarding of obsolete tech is definitely a generational thing. Are you still planning on going back to Kyev given recent events? Or are you waiting it out?
Brilliant video Johnny. Watching from the UK. Just to say it’s tragic what is going on in Ukraine. We support a Ukraine. This video was so heart warming. It’s so kind to bring us into your personal world and where you lived.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing your life. One note on hoarding. As we age, we automate a lot of mental processes. A lots of daily tasks become automatic in our minds. A lots of responses to stimuli are automated. This takes to least amount of energy in our brain. That's why we hate changes as we get older. For automation to work, the environment needs to stay the same. Throwing things away change the environment and change our mental model of the world. The routines suddenly don't work anymore. It takes a lot more energy to solve a problematic encounter. It takes more energy and time to create a new routine. People hoarding is an attempt to keep the environment the same, but inertia has gone overboard.
That old stereo equipment is such an old people thing, my grandma's room looks like that lol, we had to twist her arm just to get her a new flat screen TV.
Johnny! My half-brother had the same yelling father childhood. I had him screaming WHAT IS THE CAPITAL OF MAINE?! less than 10yrs before. Such is life. Love you bro.
There’s nobody in the world who loves you more than your family. Your parents have done well by you making you the lad you are. I am sure they are proud of you.
You know about the realities of housing in San Francisco. My daughter lives in San Francisco, and lived for several years in a garage "in-law unit" in the Outer Sunset. Her rent was "reasonable" by San Francisco standards...we live about three hours north of the Bay Area, and her rent was more than the mortgage for our three bedroom house.
Hey Johnny, thank your parents for allowing us in their home. I was always amazed about those tiny alleyways between the houses too. They tend to exist in so many cities where the houses are just packed together. When you get back to Ukraine, consider having a sleep study done. It could save your life. I'm sure it will be inexpensive there, and they will be able to get you some better equipment than those sleeprite strips, if needed. Better than stopping breathing while you are asleep.
You are a good man and speaks for itself how you supplement your parents income/taxes. Me and my brother do same for our mom. Dad has passed. 😢 Bless you always 😇
Some of those CRT TVs are quite desirable for retro gamers since it is difficult/impossible to truly replicate the image and motion of a CRT using a modern display. I would investigate selling before dumping it.

. Wish my mum n dad where still here :(
Great video 🙏👍
Hi from the Richmond district! Your parents are adorable and what a great family visit. Just found your channel. 🙌🏼
This was truly heartwarming Johnny your mom and dad are amazing and did a perfect job of raising a respectful gentleman
Enjoy the time you have with your parents because I lost both of mine over the past 3 years and I miss them both very much
Thanks for sharing. I really think they should replace the TV stand with something more modern and take that 60" TV! I know change is rough but their QOL will drastically improve.
Very nice to see your humble background Johnny! Great video buddy 🙏🙌
What a lovely, loving tribute to your parents! And I'm glad you're safe away from poor Ukraine - we're all praying for them.
Thanks again for allowing us to get to see what it was like for you growing up. Blessings brother. ❤️
So sweet to share your family home..God bless you all 🥰
Great video of so much family love......you won the lottery when it comes to family and I know you won't ever forget that.
Thank you for sharing a small piece of your life. I know the feeling and have family members the same way. I grew up in the South Bay and I have had a similar experience as you did growing up.
I love this video because of how well filmed it was, and editing is quite nice. Paying homage to your family like this is beautiful. Much respect 🙏
Cool.
This might be your best video ever. THis is so relatable.
This is so beautiful to watch! Many more new discoveries and sweet memories for you , Johnny. Stay well and keep safe ❤️
This was good Johnny! You are doing good for your parents. The hoarding of obsolete tech is definitely a generational thing. Are you still planning on going back to Kyev given recent events? Or are you waiting it out?
Kudos, Johnny, for taking care of your parents. Great retrospective videos!
I love this video! Thank you for sharing your earlier life. It's great to know your past and what made you the person you are now
House prices in Vancouver are just as ridiculous. The average house price now is C$1.25 million (US$1 million) and many are just not worth it.
Fantastic. Johnny Jen, thank you, family is amazing. Great to see where your roots are
Very Cool Johnny !! Thanks for sharing, you had a very good upbringing with humble beginnings and it shows in your good character
Brilliant video Johnny. Watching from the UK. Just to say it’s tragic what is going on in Ukraine. We support a Ukraine. This video was so heart warming. It’s so kind to bring us into your personal world and where you lived.
That was very enjoyable and I could relate to so many of the things that you shared. Thanks Johnny!
Your best video so far!!! Loved the way you did it and how you are not ashamed of your parents lifestyle at all., again, loved it.
I love how you honored your parents! Beautiful.
Johnny! My half-brother had the same yelling father childhood. I had him screaming WHAT IS THE CAPITAL OF MAINE?! less than 10yrs before. Such is life. Love you bro.
The Video Opening looks like a ' People Under The Stairs ' album... Your Home looks like Hip Hop... 1997 down to the Lazer Disc. Love it!
Cpap ;)
@@snoozinglion8596 Maybe not the sexiest of things, but those machines are very useful.
You are a good man and speaks for itself how you supplement your parents income/taxes.
Me and my brother do same for our mom. Dad has passed. 😢
Bless you always 😇
I love this your Mom and Dad did great they have a lot to be proud of bravo Johnny
Some of those CRT TVs are quite desirable for retro gamers since it is difficult/impossible to truly replicate the image and motion of a CRT using a modern display. I would investigate selling before dumping it.
