- I've been using the Scoop Free litter box system for many years now and it's a very reliable system that saves me time. It's easy to clean up after my kitties!

@@Jazz-ji9zuthis is the non clumping litter unless you meant the traditional litter, the clumping one? If so, I have my doubts since those lumps get a big bigger and heavier. Hence, the mechanical system may not be able to scoop it to the tray pocket, and the pocket may not be able to hold the lump due to the size. Disclaimer: I haven’t tried it.
I have three of these. I have six cats. My cats make very regular use of them. I scoop out the feces and pour the litter into a five gallon bucket. The urine has become a powder in the bottom of the tray. I scoop that out and then reuse the litter in the bucket. I’ve found that Fresh Step crystals which are less expensive than Pet Safe and work well in the box so you’re not limited to pet safe litter. I love mine which is why I have three of them. You buy four or five for what one Litter Robot will cost.

Hi Jim, thanks for sharing that tip. I have never seen the urine become powder, so I wonder if I am not using enough litter. About how much crystal litter do you use in each box? I use crystal litter alone, but I had tried mixing the crystal with non clumping clay, and that was not successful either at controlling the urine smell.
@@mariewhitman8758 Hi. If you use the Pet Safe litter you may pour the whole bag into the empty litter tray, spread it out evenly and press the button to operate the rake. Anyway after the compartment is pretty much full of feces use a litter scoop and put into like a plastic grocery bag or something. Then gently pour the remaining crystals into a bucket. You may then see a powdery residue stuck to the tray. Discard that also. You can then reuse the crystals that you poured into the bucket. I usually fill to the small lip just below the motion detector. Also a bag of Fresh Step crystals might give you about two fills. I really like mine and the urine smell is very minimal. And also they don’t make the mess the clay boxes do.

They make clumping crystal litter but the clumping crystals cost more and are smaller crystals so it sticks to their paws. I'm going to try mixing crystal litter with the clumping crystal litter.

Thank you for the thorough explanation of this product. I just bought an additional unit, since we have 4 cats, and this system has saved our sanity. One of our cats had stopped using the basic litterbox, so we had to line the floor with pee pads, and it was a nightmare. Once we set up the Petsafe Scoopfree, I was shocked to see that he used it and has done so ever since without any issues. The system is not perfect, however, and we are still experimenting to improve its shortcomings. I found a crystal litter that is much more economical, since we re-use the disposable trays a few times. For us, this system was worth very penny.

@@rmreviews3000 Vibrant Life is the brand. $11.23 for 8 lbs. I can only find it at Walmart. If it becomes unavailable or rises too much in price, I will switch to clay litter. The price of SoPhresh crystal litter, which is sold at Petco, was economical before its price doubled.

Thanks for making the review, I've had one for 6 years and have been satisfied overall. I did NOT do my homework to see that you can just purchase the litter separately and have been getting the box 3 packs all this time. So much money ugh, but THANKS I will be seeking out just the litter on next purchase.
Thanks to others who have suggested alternative crystals to try, will definitely be looking into those.
Wanted to add that on my model if I sit the cardboard tray into the tray top (as you did), the unit doesn't seem to sit right and sometimes seemed to have raking issues, so now I just sit the tray on the floor.
I also saw someone mention using clay litter and was curious if anyone has any experience they could share.

I've been through many different automatic litter boxes over my many years of owning cats and I've recently switched to this one about a year ago, and this is one of the first reviews of this system that I've seen on UA-cam so I was very interested to hear your opinion. I agree 100% about re-using the trays -- I considered buying the "permanent" tray that they sell but 1) I didn't want to deal with having to periodically clean it and 2) amazon reviews of them said that the poop tray is smaller and overall it doesn't work as well. So I regularly just dump out the tray into a bag and then when I finally change out the whole tray (about every 3 months or so), I typically just drop the whole thing in its own kitchen trash bag and try and tie it up tight. But I like your idea of taping it closed better -- when I drop it in the bag the litter spills out in the bag and taping it just seems like a more tidy solution.
I have 4 cats, two of them are older and often have loose stools so I do end up having to change litter pretty frequently, but the crystals do a good job of reducing the odor. Interestingly, I've tried both the purple and the blue but I find the blue works better -- to each his own, I guess. I'll sometimes use Fresh Step crystals based on price/availability and they seem to work just as well.
The biggest drawback for me is that the litter is more expensive and it does seem a bit wasteful but by reusing the trays, it's kept the cost manageable for me.
I'd rather not clean the reusable trays, but you can definitely save some money.

Reusable trays work fine. Only downside is you have to clean them, but it's cheaper overall.

I purchased this system over 6 months ago and I have purchased the 6 count litter trays and also the 3 count litter trays. With one cat, I learned to watch the usage count the system shows before removing and cleaning out the used box tray.
I used to change it every 3 - 4 weeks which made it go over 50 uses. I noticed when it hit 50 uses my cat would stop using the box and go outside in my back yard. I just tried 40 count uses and seems to be the right number for her. I have one cat and the crystals actually work in keeping the odor to almost nothing.
This week, I notcied the box start soaking up a lot of urine so I put a pad in between the bottom of the box into the lid box tray to keep the urine from soaking through the main box to the lid under it.
That worked but I didn't like the mess, so I decided to get the additional complete PLASTIC tray and magnet which I found . Didn't know they had this, but after trying to figure out a better system than the tray, pad, lid combo....I started looking for a solution and Amazon came through again!!!! Love it! This actually works well and love the counter for use and the cleaner setting for how long to wait after cat uses it before cleaning starts. Great little system. Worth it.

Do you just use the plastic tray or do you put the cardboard inside it
@@sondraxcore I use the plastic tray alone. I do sprinkle a little arm and hammer pet odor urine control on bottom (just a sprinkle) before pouring in the crystals.
When I empty the tray, I grab a garbage bag, slide the tray into it, use the scooper to scrape it clean, wash it off outside with a hose. Very easy.
I do have the box trays but trying not to use them too often because I noticed that there was some leakage 2 different months from my one cat urinating a lot and I had to start to use the potty napkins under the boxes before I got the plastic tray. Seriously love it. Simple to clean and reuse.
No more hassle with the cardboard boxes leaking and having to improvise a potty pad insde the lid when under the tray etc etc..

Had this for over a couple of years. Works fine, would like a bigger poop cavity, my cat will fill it in a week. We have the crystals on order through Chewy...saves a few bucks and use a reusable tray.

There is a reusable tray you can purchase. I didn't have good luck with the disposables. I also noticed that litter gets wasted if you pour it all the way to the edges. I set everything up and then I pour the litter last, so it's not getting stuck behind the rake or under the poop area and going to waste
There are some good trays available.
Hello! I was wondering if you could tell me what the cardboard flap does? I'm looking into getting one along with the reusable tray for my disabled mother, and modifying it to push the litter into a bin below, but since I don't have any experience with this system, I'm trying to figure out whether the flap is integral or not 😅 really enjoyed this review, loved watching your cat chew on the corner on the box lol
The flap is magnetically attached to the plastic flap. When the rake scoops up the litter, it opens up and the poop is stored in there. It closes as the rake moves back.

Granted I've only had this for a couple of weeks but after initial expense of $350 odd, litter tray/permanent tray/litter, I think I'll find it cost me about $40 every 2 months? I'd say that's a pretty good saving!
I just got this litter box. It works great but has a lot of smell - more than when I was using clumping clay litter. Is there a way to reduce the smell? Does using the purple crystals really make a big difference in the odor control?
The purple crystals are a little better. I also sprinkle in some Rocco & Roxie Odor Eliminator. It's pretty effective if the box isn't too full. amzn.to/3Y9bouW

I think mainly the counter. However, it's a been a while since I had the old one so I'm not sure.
We find that most silica litters work fairly well and is much cheaper. The biggest problem with this unit is the insane price of the replacement boxes or their specific litter.

@@rmreviews3000 I'm in the UK so not sure if you would have this but I use tigerino crystals. Specifically the fun pink one as it tends to work in the machine better. Weirdly it's smaller size crystals work better than some of their larger sized crystals. Still works on the same way - with one cat it can last 3 ish weeks in the scoop free.
If you go to Pet Smart you can get a three set of the Lavender for about $42. The blue is actually more expensive. Just the opposite of what he stated in the video.

Guys is this worth it? I just started working again for the first time since I've had cats and I'm working 12hr shifts 5 days a week so I'm not at the house to scoop them. Found it on Walmart without the top cover for $140 does it work well? I have 5 cats I'm wanting to get one of these to go with one of those other ones that you just roll over to clean. What are the upsides and downsides?
The price of the trays have doubled since I purchased mines many years ago. I’m now investing in a litter robot. The scoop free always left particles behind and was messy to change.
How do you like the Litter Robot now compared to the Scoopfree?

I have one for 2 cats, but it needs more attention than 2 separate boxes. It really depends on how much space you have.

I saw another review video that said it was 14" x 14" and comments of cats up to 20 lbs using it.
Interior is around 16x19. My cats are around 10-11 lbs each. One is quite tall, but he fits ok.
Look for scentless crystals. Cats want to smell themselves, not lavendar or something.
I bought the whole setup, but if I were to do it again I'd just by the trays, or use crystals in regular litter boxes. There is no odor.
When the crystals start showing a lot of yellow, I dump them in my gravel driveway, and continue to use the box.
The crystals will melt / decompose.
I still follow Jackson Galaxy's advice, 1 box per cat plus 1 extra. My one extra is still clay, but they rarely use it.
You can get scented and scentless crystals.
scented crystals are fine i use it for my cats for 8 years and I’ve never had any issues with the cats not liking it.
Cats do not want to smell there poop…. That’s why they use the litter box..
I just got this and one of my two cats loves it and has had no problems with it. My orange male cat is throwing a big fit and refuses to use the litter box. I’m really frustrated waking up every day to see poop or pee on the floor and having to clean that. Any suggestions?? Is it the scent in the litter or maybe he’s mad about sharing?? But they shared a litter box before this. I’m not sure but I’ll try the scentless litter before I make any other changes

We have a first generation PetSafe Scoop Free litter box and now we see there's a second generation. Our one cat passed away and as we prepare to get two new cats, we're considering getting a second PetSafe Scoop Free, but we don't know which gen to get. Any thoughts on that?
There isn't a huge difference in generations in my experience. The first gen is cheaper and it works pretty well.
I had mine for 3 years, now I realized its not doing good in oder control anymore. It basically doesn't scope the no.2 into the cabins anymore, it just scoop them from one end of the box to the other. and I found the cabin where suppose to contains no.2 is full of clean crystals. Not sure how to fix it, we are looking at alternatives at this moment

How easy do cats become acclimated to the crystal litter after they've only been on clumping litter?
You can mix in some crystal litter into your normal box and then mix in more. My cats had no issue with the new litter.

I put my own hood on because its the original scoopfree and it fits perfecly with 6 pieces of tape i acely used acrylic shapes as tape didnt have Any.
I see there are different color ways, brown, purple and grey fronts. Is there any difference in this?
No mechanical difference afaik.

I don't think clumping litter will work with this. I'd try another crystal style litter.

The litter and tray have been increasing in price every few months. I had this for years but it became more expensive. I invested in the litter robot recently. Its been a lot less expensive. As a disclaimer, I have two cats. I had to replace the trays every 2 weeks. It was just too expensive.
It's not the cheapest solution for sure. I found the litter prices were high during Covid, but have stabilized again. Lots of people seem to be using alternative litter.
Just so I know I bought a litter robot worked great for a month now just a bunch of errors and half rotations. A big piece of garbage send it back now
@@sethterwilliger9434 I've had mine for 3 months and I've had no issues with the litter robot 4. As someone who used those trays for 9 yests, the LR4 is so much better. I can't smell anything. I spend so muchh less a month and my cats have had less accidents. I wouldve contacted supoort, they probably wouldve sent you a new unir or replaced your LR

I got it originally because I was away from home a lot. I'm home more now but I still use it along with another clay litterbox. Mine prefer using the clay but the Petsafe works as a good secondary for them and I'm not burning through as much crystal.

I have learned that you NEVER need to throw away your box of used litter WITH all the cat turds and litter in it! Just wrap it all up in an Amazon box and leave it on your front porch..... it'll eventually magically disappear!!

I had original pet safe scoopfree litter box. I tried to buy a hood for it but unfortunately, it doesn’t fit original one but 2nd generation 😢

Crystal litter sucks. I started to use arm and hammer litter. Even though the crap sticks to the metal rack, it still covers the smell very well which requires me to do less changing of the litter. Use a box of arm and hammer if using crystal litter to aid with the smell.

If this had double end cap ends where it move one direction each time to push the poop to both ends this would fix a lot of the problems you find with poop that breaks up. Having the ability to move to just one side in one pass allow there to be more time for stuff to firm up. Set the time to ever 30 mins to hour. All you would have to do is lift off the litter top which would expose a quite deep pan then scoop or dump the the entire contents. If someone made a litter box like this then I would be game for 150 bucks.
There's the Littermate system which is more sophisticated and more expensive as well. I tried another litter rake system a coupl years back, but for the price, I prefer the Scoop Free.
@@rmreviews3000 In the end I got a full warranty refund on my cat box and I spent a bit of time opening it up and fixing the wire problem that many people were having. While not the best wire job it still works and works far better than it did when we first had it.
I am going to run it in to the ground until I can no longer fix it before I decide to buy a new one.
I have not seen another version of the Littermate/littermaid cat boxes that are more sophisticated.

Isn't lavender (including the scent) toxic to cats?
I'm pretty sure this isn't real lavendar. I don't think they would create a toxic product. My last cat lived a very long life using this box her entire life.
This thing is hit-and-miss. It doesn't work on wet poo which sticks to everything including the rails. It doesn't absorb urine. The cat eventually decides to pee outside the box. It's expensive to keep operating. You will find feces on the rakes, and on the plastic parts and that's one more clean up job you've got to do.
Use a regular box, with unscented, clumping litter. Put baking soda in the bottom of the box to reduce the smell. Buy one of the scoops for poop removal. 😉
I was gonna say, you need a cat with consistently firm bowel movements for this to work, otherwise it's just going to stir littler and shit together
yes you need cats with normal bowel movements and the rake will not pick up pee. It’s not zero maintenance, but it’s less maintenance for my cats imho.

Help! I have an old Pet Safe box and usually my husband changes the box. Now I’ve gotten the waste receptacle cover off but I can’t figure out how to reattach it. I have the gray cover and the plastic piece w the magnets but don’t know WTH to do to reattach it. Help!!!

@@debknott3268 the pieces with metal on the lid go on the lid of the litter tray it's magnets? The other side with the little knobs click in the box and is what makes it go up and down. Should've come with instructions
There are little pegs at the ends of the cover. Just put them into the base. Pegs go toward the front of the unit.

I don't think it's real lavendar. It's just scented. My cats have never had any issues.

i noticed that you didnt mention the cost of filters,i see they can be expensive,maybe not the right thing to but if filters cost too much thats all.overall looks to be a great system other than filters and cat litter costing also.considerating these both things might be costly,my opinion only.

My cat doesn’t want to use it. She seems terrified by it and is only 2 years old. I tried to give her no option and only left the pet safe box out and she went all over my house instead of using it. I am now trying the method of placing her old litter box next to it to get her more comfortable and I plan to just let it get dirty. I’m just afraid she’s not going to adapt to this and I’m not sure what else to do or how long to give it.
My cat was scared of it for a while too. Turn it off, so it doesn't do anything for a month and let her get used to it. Then, when she's comfortable, using it, turn it back on, but maybe close the door so she can't see what's happening. Some cats are just generally kind of nervous. My last cat was very scared of everything, but after a few months she got used to it. When it started cleaning she used to swat it, but then she gave up after a while. Good luck!
@@rmreviews3000 just wanted to provide an update. I did have it turned off as u suggested for a couple days and now we have plugged it in. My cat is using it regularly even with it plugged in! She refuses to go in through the front because she knows that is what lifts when it rakes. We had bought the one with the cover but because she will only go in through the sides we will not be utilizing the cover. But I’m just happy she’s using it. Thank you so much for responding!

Have used this for years. My new cat pees standing up, so I’m having a horrible time with the smell because pee collects between the lid and the base. The only solution I have found is taking some plastic to the bottom of the lid so it hands downward. Not the perfect solution; It does have to be replaced every couple weeks and is time consuming. I’m hoping to find a better solution if anyone has figured it out.

Great idea but the amount you have to throw away and silica crystals aren't biodegradable. If it had a proper plastic tray that could be reused for years and emptied and had a biodegradable litter then this would be amazing.
You can get a re-usable plastic try, but the silica crystals are not recyclable.
Anybody tried wood pellets? They become powdery after meeting with liquid, don't they? Therefore, you can separate pellets from smelly powders, I guess?
I don't think wood pellets would work too well, but you could try and then report back?

No, odor control is pretty good with their crystals. Definitely equal to any good quality litter.
Have used for 6 years. We all have different tolerances of course, but I think I'm fairly sensitive and it's nothing noticeably bad after the waste solidifies and gets scooped into the compartment. I've also just used the basic blue litter, not the scented purple.

Yes - it doesn't work very well. I'm experimenting with different crystal litter and if it works I'll make another video.

I think hes getting paid for this infomercial! I have one, I think it sucks! With 2 cats it last about 4 days, 5 if your lucky! Then each cardbourd replacement tray with litter is $25!

I saw this review before I bought my litter box. I went with a 155.99 Nature Miracle cat litter box, the new version. While it is not the best a whole container of clumping litter will last 2 or more months for my single elderly cat. I opted to get that one because it was cheaper and did not have the crystal. The review pretty much are the exact same thing for every single cat litter box that is not some 1000 dollar fancy one. The other reason was the boxes and the price of the plastic box and the cost of the litter kept me from buying it. Every litter box says that it leaves behind poop, breaks up poop and everything else. Just go and read all the one star reviews and you cna sort the human error from the faults. After a while I pulled the side panels off and cut out the led lights as there is no damn on and off switch for them. Sorry it was just the stupidest thing ever. Then today it quit working. Emailed them and they fully refunded me per the warranty. I am pretty well versed in electrical, manufacturing and design that I opened it up and began testing every thing. Turns out that the ribbon cable broke down and is no longer good. I then fashioned a new one with some wire, glued, taped and tested it and its now all good. I am sure that with in a year or so my cable will fail as well. I will attempt to find something to make it work. If I had and knew how to use a 3d printer I would make a new rake that is just a bit longer so that it almost touches the bottom pan.

Sory but i dont recommend. I have 6cats and ITS really Not works as i have expected. Im looking for another Cat toilet.
6 cats is definitely too much for this or any single, tradtional litter box.
