Cat litter does make a difference, and choosing what kitty litter is right for you and your cat is also important, but keeping your litter stink-free has less to do with the type of litter than the way you set it up.
Nobody likes to live with that stinky smell all over the house, and you definitely don't want your guests to have to pretend they don't notice the litter box smell (or should we say, litter box stink) that multiple cats can bring to your household. And really, this is true for since or multiple cat households.
We believe a stink free, clean litter box is the greatest tool for cat owners to check on their cat's health daily. Because life with cats is better, and cats are family.
It's all about my secret ingredient, and my litter box 101 type maintenance routine. Keeping a clean litter box will be an absolute breeze!
In this channel, I share everything I have learned about natural nutrition and in integrating a holistic approach to your cat and dog’s health. If there's a particular topic you wish you have more info on, leave us a comment and check out our other videos.

Yes, I always buy big boxes of baking soda, just for my Kitty's box. My routine is I scoop his box out before I go to bed, because his litter box is in my bed room😱😂, and I sprinkle the baking soda on top when I get done. I clean his box out every 3 weeks or so. Problem is, he wants to do his business after EVERY time I scoop it lol.
So does he go right on top of the baking soda then?
I was gonna say mine don’t… but they did just that this morning 😂 I tried sprinkling it on top but I felt it was a bit too dusty!
@@MicolAndOtherAnimals I get the off brand baking soda from the dollar store, and it usually has little clumps in it to help with the dust. I'll also put a box in the refrigerator sometimes, to let a little moisture in it so it clumps a bit more. It doesn't hurt the effectiveness at all, and he doesn't mind it one bit. In fact, I think he likes swishing it around the box himself lol
@@youhustlinmeboy4989 Yeah, I think he likes mixing it in the litter himself when he gets in the box. I just put a light amount on top every evening after I scoop the box out.
@Tena Defiant that’s a great trick 😊 I’ll try it!!!
I grew up with cats and I did and do exactly what you present here : baking soda , scooping at least twice per day cleaning the box and disinfecting with Clorox. And I had people in my appt who are allergic to cats and had no idea that I had two. People are allergic to dirty cat litters and vacuuming the house just once per week. Good advice
Thank you ☺️ I also had allergic people come and visit and they seemed to be none the wiser 😉
Its not usually the litter people with cat allergies are allergic too. Its cat dander. Its gets on everything and you cant see it. Maybe you have short haired non shedding cats?
@@shecat1964 actually what we are allergic to it the protein in the urine and saliva, Most common is Fel D 1 protein.
Doggo in the background like “Ugh, THIS topic”
This is great advice but after hearing one particular ingredient I do have to make a disclaimer:
Cat urine contains ammonia.
If anyone here is going to be using bleach to clean their box PLEASE make sure it's very diluted and that the box has been thoroughly rinsed first. There are stories of people pouring a bleach solution directly into their empty, urine soaked plastic and that can create toxic fumes.
Personally I would advise to never mix bleach with anything except water but when in doubt google is your friend. Dawn would also work in place of bleach.
The baking soda is fantastic and I am excited to try this!
Exactly! This is why I use baking soda at the bottom of my litter box, then rinse and use a 10% bleach solution 😉
Love the door idea I’m going to look one up, I now clean cat box with baking Soda dawn dish soap and vinegar I don’t use bleach 👍 So glad I took the time to see your video, awesome good job 👍
One thank you’ your advice is the best of the Best! Cat sitting and videos really do help ❤❤❤❤
I use Dawn dish soap and a small amount of bleach to clean and disinfect my litter boxes. Works great. I let the boxes soak for 10 or so minutes, brush the boxes and all scooping tools, dust pans, and broom. Rinse very well, let dry in the sun or wipe dry. Kitties love it.
Sounds like a great routine 👍
@@MicolAndOtherAnimals Been doing the sanitizing like this for years. Works great. Thank you.
Be careful if you are mixing bleach with anything as it can cause a dangerous chemical reaction. Sister-in-law fainted and cracked her head open on porcelain toilet, bled all over the place. Luckily my other sister-in-law was there, and ventilated the bathroom using its window

@@MicolAndOtherAnimals last night my husband and I took in 3 (2 female 1 male) 4-5 month old kittens that were rescued off the streets 2 1/2 hrs from my home. Cool vídeo. I knew about the wonders of sodium, but never applied it to my cats' routine because I thought it might bother them. I use something that I can't say in English... those paper towels meant to absorb liquids that are sooo useful in the kitchen... I place two layers at the bottom, and use pine litter, which also absorbs odors truly well. I will definetely get your advice. Oh! And... subscribed!
Glad it was helpful, and welcome 😎
One caveat…. Two of our kitties developed alopecia (baldness) from the baking soda. It can be very irritating to their skin.
Thank you for sharing! I hadn’t heard of this, and while it clearly isn’t an issue for my lady kitties, I’d like to know more! Can you share what symptoms they had (other than hair loss… was it from overgrooming?), what they usually eat, and how you found out it was baking soda? It might be helpful for other kitty owners!

How did you manage to cut the perfect hole in it? I don't have any tools at home other than a pocket knife and I'm wondering if this is something I could use
The first time I did it, I just used a retractable knife and heated the blade! Best method so far😉

Stainless steel litter boxes are great, I have a jumbo size 24x 16 x 8" that my 3 raw fed kitties politely share. I keep a mister with distilled vinegar, peppermint soap diluted w/ water solution handy for wiping down dust and as an air freshener.

😂😂😂😂
I have 2 cats and nobody knows I have cats. The secret to (almost) odourless cat poo and pee is to feed them raw food. Processed cat food results in disgustingly smelly poo.
When cats eat biologically appropriate food, their pee and poo hardly smell just as God intended for their bigger cousins in the wild. Predators like tiger and lions cannot afford to have stinky poo as it will make it hard for them to move around undetected.
Yes it’s awesome how much good nutrition changes that, isn’t it?
@alya hamazah
What raw food do you feed them? I'm a first time cat person. And I need help.
@@linagervacio392 hi, I followed recipe from "Cat Lady Fitness". U can find her videos on utube and they r very helpful. Videos from "The primal pack" are also great too!
Did you check out my videos on cat nutrition? They might be helpful 😊
I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense to me to feed them anything raw unless it's alive. That's their natural thing; feeding them live mice and such. To feed them raw meat might lead them to get parasites.
Her dog behind her like
"When is it going to be my turn?"
Exactly 😂
I have a son who moved to my new house temp. and I can't stand the smell as he goes to work regualrly and not taking care of his cat. Now I stepped up watching this video I hope this works and anything you can share I appreciate it.
Hi Edelyn, daily pickup of pee and poo is a must for smell. Baking soda helps neutralize the smell, but the more the urine sits there, the more it smells 😉
Thank you. I have tried Baking Soda before but did not layer it.
I will try it again.
My Cat Litter box is by my front door too.
The right litter makes a bit difference, too!
Thank you, I'm going to try this out with expired product, should still do the job but not great for baking.
Absolutely Erik!
Baking Soda is the best. I've always used it in the Litter.
It really is! ☺️
Adding baking soda doesn't hurt your cat, but it only works to reduce smell if you are using a natural litter (pine based, corn based etc).
Most artificial climping litters are already designed to absorb ammonia by being slightly alkaline. Adding baking soda messes with the PH so that you actually make the litter worse at absorbing ammonia.
So the baking soda will clump around urine and absorb the liquid part but not the ammonia, causing the ammonia to slowly separate and vaporize. The Baking soda won't neutralize the vaporizes ammonia so much as just physically clump around it, holding it in.
You will see this the first time you scoop the artificial litter after adding baking soda.
The second you scoop into a clump of baking soda, you'll get an incredibly strong ammonia smell, stronger than anything you ever got with just artificial clumping liter, because the ammonia was never actually absorbed, just physically surrounded by the baking soda.
So everytime your cat scratches a clump of baking soda it will release that stronger ammonia smell.
Again you don't get this effect with natural litters but you will always get it with the basic artificial clumping litters.
If you want to keep using artificial litter (it generally clumps better) just go with crushed zeolite. That physically absorbs urine and the smell without separating the ammonia vapor.
Great advice, thank you. Also I have to say this lady looks just like Liza Minnelli!
You’re welcome ☺️ and thank you 😂
I never knew that about cats and bleach! Having 7 cats and a relatively big dog (he's only 120 lbs), I would be insane to even try caging them to eat while I "harvest" from the large boxes...
Ahahah I love “harvest”. Just the right word for it 😂
I can totally relate to you
I like how dog at the background seems like already give up life
😂
clean litter box every day.( more times a day if you have more than one cat.). onlytakes a few minutes...than yes one a month deep clean box.
Yup, and that’s the ticket to a happy cat (and happy cat owner 😎)
It takes way longer than a few minutes. Especially if you are in a multicat house.
Hey, thank you for sharing the secret! Will this also be helpful with wood pellets as litter?
Yes I believe it would work just as well ☺️
really nice work & video!
id like to suggest looking into using 'wood pellets' as cat litter instead of all this overpriced expensive marketed stuff; only thing is you'd need a 'filter' sorta like a colander to filter out all the saw dust. wood pellets are way more natural & eco friendly + you wont really need the baking soda but doesnt hurt to use it esp for the cleaning part
Thank you for sharing ☺️ I prefer clumping litter, since it allows me to keep my kitties’ health in check daily, but I know many people like wood pellets 😎
Hi where did you get your litter box from? Love the video btw! ❤
Thank you 🥰 I made it myself from a plastic tub I got from IKEA. It’s honestly the best litter box ever, comfortable for my lady kitties and easy to clean! I have a video where I show how I made it, if you’re interested 😊

Hi wow I will definitely try this to day I brought my cats a new littler box and it's good to start off good and thank you for the tip also do you have any advice on what best to use to get rid of the cat pee I have tried lots of things but my cat seems to go bk to spots even if litter box is clean
Hi Emma! Oh you’re most welcome! So, first check if there’s a vet issue there, sometimes kitties with UTIs will pee outside of the litterbox and that’s the only symptom they show! Then definitely get an enzymatic cleaner. I have one I have used in the past (didn’t realize Britannia has peed in the car while moving, so the spot had dried up already) but it’s only available in Europe. The trick seems to be to really soak the spot and keep it moist, so the enzymes can do their job 😉 I think I will do a video about this soon! I hope that helps
I use Cats Best litter, I have 4 cats and 2 large litter trays. I scoop both trays frequently every day scrub the trays monthly. There is never a nasty smell in my house.
Plus the litter I use is dust free because litter that is dusty can badly affect cats lungs, as can baking soda
Thank you for sharing! I haven’t found any indication that baking soda is harmful, but if you have links to articles or studies, would you mind sharing them here? The more we learn, the better we can take care of our animals 😊
@@bigorangcat54 exactly, plus using bleach is dangerous.
White wine vinegar is about the only thing that neutralises the smell of cat wee, so it’s great if your cat has peed where it shouldn’t, a weak solution of warm water, soapy suds and a couple of tablespoons of white wine vinegar, sponge on then either use a carpet cleaning machine to suck it up or a couple of towels to soak it up.
I like the cage you use for your cat. Where did you buy it?
There's a link to similar crates in the description. I got mine when I lived in Italy, but even there they're hard to find now. A small dog crate would definitely do the trick, too!

Hi there. I am giving my girls 2 kittens this Christmas and I was worried about this transition until I stumbled upon your channel. Thank you thank you!! Si many good information I’ve found here.
I am purchasing the litter you recommended and also the sure flap catflap but do you know which tags are compatible with it? I found two but it doesn’t say is compatible with the cat flap just the cat doors. Thanks for all!!
Hi Camila! What an incredible Christmas addition to your family 🥰 why are you getting the cat flap? If you only have cats, you don’t need to add it to your litter box. In any case, mine is will read to my ladies’ microchip
@@MicolAndOtherAnimals I am adding the flap to the litter box buca use of my 2 little dogs. I know they’ll get into it and I want to prevent it ;)
@@MicolAndOtherAnimals I appreciate you replying so promptly ❤️
Ah yes, we have that problem in common 😅😂 if your kitties have a microchip, then you’re set. Otherwise I believe they offer a tag you can add to your kitties collar that can be read by the flap 😉
@@MicolAndOtherAnimals Yes I found those and will purchase, I just hope they work because in the compatibility tab doesn’t mention the cat flap only cat doors. I hope there’s no difference…thanks again! Ill keep watching for more wisdom. God bless.
I am going to try this because I have two kittens and we are really struggling to keep the house from smelling like pee
Great! I hope it works for you like it did for us!
Great solution! Now please tell me…do you have a cure for the kitty that tracks litter all over the house? I’ve tried everything, including special mats to “catch” the loose litter, and indoor/outdoor carpet placed directly in front of the litter box. She’s terrible about tracking it everywhere!
Sure do! There’s 3 things I found that help: 1)I like a litter box with a “foyer” (like in my 2 videos, the scandi inspired litterbox and the Malm chest of drawers turned litterbox) 2) a good mat, I really like mine 3) the right litter, I used world’s best cat litter. This keeps tracking at an all time minimum 😉
Where did you find the box? And how did you add the flap to the box? Also wondering if the box was is too high for them to enter and exit without making a mess? They will need to jump in and out. But I guess the sand doesn’t go everywhere because of the walls. I also can’t find this litter in Europe so wondering if there is different name for it so I can find another brand that makes this type? It looks very different from regular types like this is sand and the other is like pebbles or something.
The inner and outer pieces are from Ikea, the litter is Worlds best litter which I can find easily here in Germany 😉 the combo of high walls on the inside litter box and the “kitty foyer “ really help keep the litter in. I cut the hole so they would need to lift their legs hit not need to jump 😉
I love 5 large boxes (for 4 cats) with puppy training pads. It keeps the boxes clean. The cats use one box for pee and the other boxes for poo. Is the bicarb ok for the cats too ingest when they clean their paws?
No it’s not
Baking soda is toxic if ingested even in small amounts
My veterinarian told me it's very bad for cat urinary health to put baking soda in their litter, as they ingest the powder later while cleaning their legs and feet and baking soda is very alkalizing, while cats need very acid urine because of their body chemistry. Baking soda alkalinity causes them to develop painful chronic inflammation, infection, and crystals (which act like razor blades in their urinary tracts). My cats stopped getting these kinds of issues when I quit using baking soda in the litter. Lesson learned, but not before a lot of agonized furry folk and a ton of vet bills.
My cats are raw fed, so their urine is naturally acidic, and the ratio of baking soda to litter is quite low 😉
Feed your cat a natural raw diet if you don't want your litter box to smell. It's like me as a human, if I have crappy McDonald meals for a week you are going to notice the difference in odor
Definitely! Thank you for sharing 😊
A raw diet? Raw what? I just got a kitten. He just eats canned cat food with a little hard food mixed in. His poop smells horrible.
Raw meat diet! It’s the species appropriate diet for cat 😊
Great video! so you normally only clean it once in the morning?
Thank you! 😊 Yes absolutely. I remove clumps and poos, and then flatten it out again, and I am good to go. It’s currently in our dining room and no bad smells disturb our meals 😎

@@dandydon6049 I have, and I mention it (and what I do and why) in my litter box 101 video 😉
@@MicolAndOtherAnimals thank you for your prompt response. I will check out that video. And you have a new subscriber.
@@dandydon6049 so awesome! welcome 😊
Thanks! How did you get your cats to eat in their crates? Mine is not food motivated at all and you have yours facing towards the door, how?!
I crate-trained them! My method is slow and easy, but it works! I share it in these two videos ua-cam.com/video/O1FhYcEihTs/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/IINY3SCVTaQ/v-deo.html . Check them out and let me know how it goes 😊
Be careful with baking soda my daughter’s cat got crystals and was painful, he got better after we get rid of the baking soda in the litter box.
Thank you so much for sharing! Was that a litter that already contained baking soda, or were you adding it? What was he eating (kibble? wet?). I am very curious, and the more we know, the better we can take care of our animals
And how about pine pallets?! Cheap, good smell and stuff… Baking soda still works with it?
Is it clumping? I think quality litter is important in keeping the smell down (for our cats as much as for us) and using a clumping litter is really helpful to monitor our cats health, too 😊 ultimately though, it’s what you and your kitty prefer 😊
I put baking soda in the bottoms of my 3 litter pans, 2 scoops of non clumping scented litter on top of that then 2 scoops of non clumping regular clay litter and finally 3 scoops of pine pellets. As you have noticed, the pine smell covers up the urine odor. I take the solids out of the pans and flush them. The urine breaks down the pine pellets into saw dust, making it easier to scoop out the solids. I have another set of the pans, already with the same levels of litter in them to change out once a week to allow myself to dump the used litter under our apple trees and in holes to fill them in. I then wash the pans and allow them to dry before putting litter in them again to change out after 7 more days. One thing I do, that is different it to put the pans, with the litter in them, into larger pans to catch most of the litter that my 3 cats try to throw out of the pans. I keep a dust pan and brush handy to sweep any other litter that gets on the floor.
Do you have a video of how you made your litter box? Please share?
Hi, I absolutely do! In this video I should you how I made it and how I made my current dog-proof hidden litterbox 😉 ua-cam.com/video/X8MHC6ooO_c/v-deo.html
I SEE YOU ALSO HAVE A LONG HAIRED KITTY!! Does the litter track or get stuck in their fur? I’m having an issue with picking litter
Hi! Yeah so… furry toes and extra furry butts are a problem all of their own, aren’t they? 😂 I am testing litters, but so far I’d still pick World’s Best (link in description). It the one that seems to track less 😉
The dog at the back dont give a fck 😂
I know, right?!?😂
Hi,thank u for the BS(baking soda) tips. I noticed that u have a lots of indoor plant.May I know what is the type of plants that is safe for indoor cats?
For a second I though you were sarcastic and meant B.S. instead of baking soda 😂😅 yes, I love my house plants 🪴 they are cat and dog friendly, too. I was thinking of doing a video on dog and cat friendly houseplants 🤔
I am sorry. I've edited the word. And please make a video for the indoor plant.
@@emmakhalif no worries 😉 ok I will then 😎
