Across all genres no one can touch them as far as originality and their ability to pass the verses between each person. Like you said their energy is good.
They came out a little after Run DMC. They both had Runs brother Russell Simmons as a manager. Russel and Rick Rubin started Def Jam who put out Beasties first record it was produced by Rubin who also produced a few records for Run DMC. The two groups were close and toured a few times together one being the Together Forever Tour. Early Beasties definitely got some of their flow from Run DMC.
@@shannongraham3055 The first Hip hop release could be considered Cookie Pus in 1983. I'm sure the Beasties would agree that Run DMC we in the rap game first.
This LP, Paul's Boutique, held the record for most samples in an album at the time with over 100 and was the impetus for much of the anti sampling laws that followed. This album is pure genius and was ranked #125 on Rolling Stone's list of all-time best LPs. Love this track
"Paul's Boutique" broke lots of ground and was a HUGE step forward for the guys... but "Check Your Head" was their start-to-finish masterpiece. I haven't heard another album that eclectic rooted in hip-hop--EVER! They just oozed talent and love of life.
Paul's Boutique was the follow up to Licensed To Ill. Not a lot of people "got it" at the time in 1989 and was a commercial failure...but it was innovative and set the table for their rise to hip hop legends. They used sampling right and it was the blueprint for guys like DJ Shadow to create masterpieces..."Endtroducing".
Beastie's were one of a kind. no one sounded like them and this came from Paul's Boutique which is a masterpiece of highly imaginative sampling and adventurous rap that continues to inspire anyone who comes across it.
Beastie Boys came up in the 80's rap scene w/ artists like Run DMC, L.L. Cool J, Public Enemy, etc. They were 3 Jewish kids from NYC and they knew they couldn't do what their peers were doing... so, they made their own style and flow. Decades later, their work still sounds fresh and not dated like most pop artists of that era.
Apart from the three rapping, the whole beat is all samples, even the GOOD GAWD parts. It's so smooth and funky. In the 80-90s there was no easy way to do that.
They came out around the same time as RUN-DMC but they had their own like old school "yes, yes y'all" style of rhyming and did it throughout their career and it worked.
One of their most complicated productions, incredible songwriting! And that sound youre talking about is "Rick Rubin", who was the Beastie Boys DJ in 1983 until 1986.
RUN DMC was about a year or so before the beasties ('84-85). We used to spit both their lyrics at each other at recess. They were both DefJam. AdRock got LL's demo to Rick Rubin not long later. The beasties admitted that their first hip-hop/rock album "license to ill" was kind of a goof, but an imitation of RUN DMC with their own flavor. It was a hit and they realized they had something. No beastie boys album sounded like the last. Their signature sound was doing something different every time, but they still brought positivity, story-telling and fun with each album. They were a blast and I miss them. RIP MCA
The official video to this is super funny too. Great reaction to a classic killer track. I think you both would really enjoy Shake Your Rump, preferably with video, but lyric video is fine. Great stuff.
As far as influences go, the Beastie Boys' biggest influence were The Treacherous Three. They were a hip hop group that literally consisted of 3 MCs (Special K, LA Sunshine, Kool Moe Dee) and 1 DJ (DJ Easy Lee) and were known for finishing each other's lines.
They were never super lyrical but they had such chemistry & such bold voices that you just couldn't help but love them. Never understand how no other hip hop groups ever bit their style/flowed off of each other like the Beasties. Definitely one of a kind
you can sometimes hear their old school roots like in this song- the wordplay style comes from groups like the treacherous three and other old school groups but turned on its head- like grandmaster flash on acid.
This song was on their record Paul's Boutique...an album with so many samples, it can never be recreated again. That record came out at the right time...trying to do it now would cost a lot just because of the amount of sampling used. It's a classic hiphop album.
On y'alls own time, watch the music video for this one. You think the track is animated, that video does the song justice! And their vocals sound as such probably because they used to be a punk band.
🔥Saw these guys play live at Maple Leaf Gardens back in the day, the next day during the hockey game the announcers were complaining the stadium still smelled like weed
@@joeday4293 Definitely not, Rush and April wine is half old people in the crowd and people sneaking in joints, Beastie Boys is 100% young stoned people lol
@@joeday4293 lol if you think there are as many people smoking weed at a Rush concert as a Beastie Boys concert you must have smoked your weight in pot!
@@CalixYukon I saw Rush three times, and I have never not smelled pot at a Rush concert. Your mileage may vary, I guess. Besides, all those "old people" would be baby boomers, who invented smoking pot at the concert. Respect your elders. LOL
This was from their Paul’s Boutique album, which was fire! In my opinion, it is their best album by far. You react to the whole thing, but Shake Your Rump is great and High Plains Drifter, Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun and Egg Man are just a few.
People have no clue how important the Beasties were to NYC and the rap scene. Just Ad Rock listening to demos while hanging around Rubin and bringing his attention to this kid rapping... that 15 year old was LL Cool J. That's how deep in this thing they are. Watch Check it Out live on David Letterman and the Glasgow concert. I knew them when they opened in CBGBs. Those days everyone was creating, NYC was broke and burnt. Hung out there, and the Loft, then the Fever in the Bronx... Everyone was hanging everywhere and it was glorious. Whether Melons, Silver Shadow, with the queens and all at Mudd, Danceteria or the lower East Side raves where Madonna (who was a waitress back then), would hang out. It was a great time. Too bad the young ones will never have that experience. Back to Beasties... We could talk the early tours, bringing in a new crowd, tours stretching out around the globe vs. local/US. Just the innovation in sampling, production, fish eye lens in vids... loads of innovations. Too bad you never saw them live, insane.
Remember the 80s was all about the video clip to go with the song. You gotta watch it while you listen, cause this one in particular is so entertaining.
Paul’s Boutique, in which this song came from, is the most sampled record ever. I heard that today it would extremely hard and expensive to replicate such a record…
Beastie Boys play their own instruments and make all the tracks that they flow over. They were a punk band prior to going hip-hop. Beasties and Run DMC are friends and if they sound alike it's because they respect each other's sound..
RUN DMC came first - I think the only similarity you're hearing is that there was a certain style about early rap which was just part of the genre and how it was back then. Beastie Boys were always unique and their passion for rap music made them innovators of the genre. Run dmc actually knew them before their first album debut - I remember a member of DMC saying they heard an advanced copy of beasties first album and knew it was going to be a hit. I think Beasties took DMC on tour with them for their first album
There's an album were The Beastie Boy's play Classical Instruments! I don't know what it's called but there is no way you would guess it's them. All instrumental. I would love to find it again.
They have two instrumental albums . First one is the in sound from way out which is a comp of their instrumentals from the check your head and Ill communication albums. They second one came out in 2006 and is called the mix up. Bunch mellow funky instrumentals . Both a very enjoyable to listen to
Paul's Boutique, wire to wire, is a legendary album! BJ was right though. Beastie Boys and RUN DMC did come up around the same time. In fact, they used to be on the same record label in the early days, Def Jam, produced by Rick Rubin and used to tour together. Although BB left Def Jam early on before releasing Paul's Boutique on Capital Records.
Rick Rubin produced both of them ( Beastie Boys and Run DMC) he also did Johnny Cash's last song right before he died the cover of 'Hurt' from 'Nine Inch Nails' And a million between... But that's probably the similarities your hearing. #Jukeboxpreacher
Beasties formed in the late '70s originally as a punk rock group. I can't remember name. Later on like 1982-83 they changed their style to rapping and change their name to Beastie boys.
Their videos are always really good! I know you get copyrighted a lot, but seriously, watch them on your own. They're usually goofy as hell and lots of fun to watch 🎶🎵❤️
It's really not a question of RunDMC or Beastie Boys, the back and forth rap style was the norm at that time and even before, that was the original Old School style.
