    TO ADD: First of all this is a genius idea indeed. This example is shown with a 1 bar loop. If you try it with the 2 or 4 bar loop it won’t work. If it’s a 2 bar loop, then you will have to set your length of re-triggers to 32 steps and increase re-triggers rate for better resolution. Unfortunately, this is not possible with more than 2 bar loops because the rate of the re-triggers don’t go up that high. In my understanding

    Wow. Brilliant trick man I would have never thought to do this. Before this I was putting in trigless trigs on the 8th notes and manually setting the start point of the sample to where it should be on each step…which did work but was a pain in the ass…this is much quicker and effective. Nice job!

    That was the one thing that paused me on AR - no time stretch given that it’s a flagship machine from Elektron, and you know they can add that if they wanted too. But, this is an excellent workaround!

    Great tip! Using the velocity ramp is genius. Technically it's beat slicing/chopping (nondestructive chopping in MPC terminology), not timestretching, hence the clicks and other limitations. But, because it's beat slicing, you can remix (flip) the beat by changing velocity of selected triggers (for the viewers: velocity mod let's you select a 'slice' using velocity).

    • @LouisSerieusement
      @LouisSerieusement 2 місяці тому +2

      you can manage the clicks by setting up a very smooth amplitude enveloppe (which would sound like a gate effetc if you overdo it), or, by masking them with amp overdrive

    This is a killer trick. Thanks so much for sharing. Considering the machine has the ability to time stretch like this. It’s a shame there’s no built in slice/time stretch mode built in that would function in much the same way. Can you imagine mapping a loop timestretched to the 16 steps automatically. But also trigger slices w the pads??

      @@HerrShield i rewatched what you do a few times now. what i dont understand: why ist the loop playing as it does? you retrigger 1/32 the sample. So it sets the start point with each trigger back to the 119 value? and thats keep the sample play in time. do i understand it right? thats why the "timestretch" sounds so nice and not grain like as on the OT. i realy whish that they had made more sample ram in the maschine. it could be my only instrument for playing live.
      my actual setup is the tr8-s, op-1, subsequent 37 and a macbook with ableton live. much to much stuff to get from gig to gig xD

    • @HerrShield
      @HerrShield  3 роки тому +1

      @@dankefurnichts Yes, for each of the retriggers the start point of the sample is used, and on top of that there is an offset applied that comes from the velocity ramp.
      I wouldn’t say that the quality of the Rytm time stretching can stand it’s ground next to the octatrack, for softer sounds the clicking that comes from the retriggers becomes quite obvious on the Rytm.

    @Herr Shield, noticed a lot of clicking when streching vocals, which is almost eliminated when reducing retrig rate to 1/4. Do you get this clicking too?

    • @HerrShield
      @HerrShield  3 роки тому

      Yes that clicking is unfortunately expected. With softer sounds it will become more obvious. The rate depends a lot on the content, for drums that you would want very accurate 1/4 might not be fine enough but might be fine with vocals.

    • @angelos808
      @angelos808 3 роки тому +1

      @@HerrShield thank you for your answer :) researched a bit about clicking, it is caused by the fact that grains don't start/end at 0 amplitude. Maybe your technique opens a possibility to use the LFO for this purpose and make it work smoothly. I will try it and let you know.

    • @HerrShield
      @HerrShield  Рік тому

      hmm, can you be a bit more specific? What doesn't work exactly? You need to make sure that you take the correct length of the sample into account, if it doesn't line up with 16 or 32 beats, you will have to do a bit of math to get the velocity mappings right. But I think it's easier to just cut the sample so that it can loop cleanly.

      @@HerrShield thanks for the reply! so if i just put the full unedited amen break on step 1 and follow these settings it wont be a perfect 16 step loop itll retrigger a few times then play the sample really fast. which leads me to think i need to edit the sample to line up with 16 or 32 beats? does this mean i have to stretch it in a daw? sorry if this makes no sense im still learning the terms and processes

    • @HerrShield
      @HerrShield  Рік тому

      @@VirtualOverride95 when you loop your current sample, for example in a daw, does it loop correctly? With the technique I showed, the re-trigger velocity ramps have a parameter how much velocity should increase/decrease, and this will control how far it will traverse in the sample. The re-trigger menu also has a length parameter, and this setting needs to match with the steps in your sequencer, you should only ever hear re-triggers and not the rest of the sample.
