Finally a musician’s perspective around how these instruments fit in various workflows! Thank you very much; I was really confused between Rytm and Syntakt and this helps a lot.
26:41 Fantastic comparison, thanks. It would be great to see a video comparing the sequencing capabilities of the Elektrons with those of the Deluge/Polyend/MPC/Roland/Perkons/etc varieties.
Thanks! I had thought about some of those comparisons in the past, but there is really nothing else that compares to the Elektron sequencers. Each you mentioned have awesome things about them (I had Deluge, MPC, and TR8s, and I still have a Perkons), but they are still miles behind the Elektrons and losing ground with every release. Even stand alone sequencers like the OXI One, Torso, and Hapex do some things better, but still can't easily parameter lock conditionally per step any parameter in the machines. The only way is with cumbersome CC messages that all have to be preplanned. The Elektrons are great for doing this stuff live. Thanks so much for watching!
I started with a Digitone because I was intrigued by the multitambral streamlined FM engine; I never understood the appeal of the Digitakt before that. Just grabbed a DT on the used market for an amazing price and have been absolutely loving the Overbridge integration for both. They really are amazing studio tools.
The undisputed Analytical King 👑. 😜 When three machines from the same company with mixed and similar features its not simple to give a 27 minute non boring lecture on comparisons Great video. 🙏👌👌 Thank you
Song mode for the syntakt is a game changer. I’ve been using it for live sets, looping sections and using it to keep major changes and transitions between tracks smooth
This was insightful. Thank you for taking the time to make the video! I have two Rytm MK I+II and have been curious about the differences between Rytm and other Elektron machines.
Actually, this vid is what I was looking for. Glad youtube understands me, and thank you for video, helped me alot. I have to save money for analog rytm now)
Thank you so much for bar none the most comprehensive video on youtube! Answered every question I had and expanded in a way I would have questioned later on. Thank you!
Thanks for the comparison! Nice to hear that the Syntakt is capable of doing 12 melodic tracks simultaneously too, that's something I haven't heard on the other videos.
I've had my eyes on the Digitakt for a little while now... but the Rytm catches my attention too.... this was very helpful! They all sound clean in comparison, but that rytm was pumping!!!! Im mainly looking for something thats going to sequence 808's in a trap/hiphop style...
Really really clear analisys..I discover now this channel for this comparison but I really enjoyed the approach you take on describe the gear...you have for sure a new subscriber, I see you have lot of interesting material
Hi, great video and analysis of one of my favourite synth brand ( I have DT, DTone, A4, AH) and I was quite happy with myself not wanting the Syntakt after it’s release, because I didn’t need it…until I watched your presentation 😞… now my mind is going to run in circle… Thanks anyway, this was very enlightening
Glad you liked the video. The amazing thing is that each piece of their stuff is powerful and unique in their own way, and we are free to mix and match to suit our needs. I have had all of their boxes at one point or another. The ones I use the most are the Octatrack, Syntakt, Analog Rytm, and Digitakt, but they all have their place. Also, it really depends on use and workflow preferences. Thank you so much for watching!
One thing I don’t like about using MIDI in Digitakt (and Digitone) is that all the tracks have to be set up per pattern. On paper that flexibility might seem great, but I don’t find it useful. I basically want my MIDI setup consistent, same channels with same CC mapping for every pattern, because my external gear doesn’t really change that often. I ended up making a project template in which I set up the MIDI in one pattern and then copied it to ALL127 other patterns, which was a bit tedious. I don’t look forward to updating that if I add any other gear. Otherwise though it’s a great MIDI sequencer in every way, love using it. I’m pretty set on getting the Syntakt also, just really want those dedicated drum synthesis machines alongside the Elektron sequencer, and the Rytm is just a bit too pricy for me. It’s funny, in your OP-1 Field video you noted that one could buy a Digitakt, MPC One, and M8 for the same price. This was exactly what I was thinking about Syntakt and MPC One, both of which I’ve seriously considered buying, but have been leaning toward Syntakt since its release. Your comment might be the excuse I’m looking for to think about getting BOTH. “Hey, they’ll cost less than an OP-1 Field!”
super clear explanations of similarities and differences of these gear. I would say the best on UA-cam, at leat I didn’t find anything better on the subject.
The RYTM is definitely a super powerful sound machine and at the same time very playable. It’s the only elektron box I kept. For anyone else who has been put off by the elektron interface and way of working, you don’t need to fear the RYTM. It’s actually really easy to use, super powerful and fun.
Yes, I had Rytm but got rid of it and kept the Cycles - added Samples just to try. Thinking of getting Syntakt and maybe Digitakt (I have so many other samples though, it's almost a joke considering more sampler-type ones...)
Hey, I found this walkthrough and explanation absolutely top notch. Thank you so much for taking your time to share your thought on the Elektron gear. I’ve got some thinking to do. Cheers
I have the opportunity to straight swap my syntakt for a blk AR mk2. I own a dtk mk2 and am in love with it, combined with syntakt i think is the ultimate set-up for me. I sold my AR mk 1 many years ago and have always regretted it. I will miss my syntakt for a while with this swap but i will buy another on the used market in time. I just think acquiring the ARmk2 at such a deal is too good to pass. Soon i will have all 3! Great video btw 🤙
Great review, I saw a guy making some really deep stuff on the Elektron Analog Rytm a few years back and fell in love. Don't own an Elektron yet but I think as you said, maybe the Syntakt for analogue and digital sound production.
Thanks for the thorough breakdown between the various boxes. I've been debating between all three of them to go alongside the Digitone Keys I plan on picking up as my first piece of kit (I like keyboards, I like FM), and it seems like the the one I keep forgetting about might actually provide precisely what I'm looking for (the Rytm mk II).
I find it surprisingly small compared to keyboards for example. Not that much larger than the takts when put next to each other but they feel much larger somehow
thanks man, its a great content because of experience and honesty! I would suggest to work a bit with lightings, its too dark, I cant see the details and devices I would like to
This was a great analysis. Thank you as always for such a informed video. I'd love to see a video about the A4, DT, and ST in the same video format. I appreciate the ending with sound samples of each as well, nice touch. I think I'll watch this again just to digest the thoughts presented here.
Thanks so much for your knowledge have a better understanding between both of the ST & DT now the midi audio info 8/12 between the two machines very interesting
you can get mki used for relatively cheap on ebay if you dont mind the crappy screens on them that all went bad over time even if the unit was never used.
Thank you so much! Great video. I am working on CyberPunk/Techno/Trance music. I have a Syntakt, Analog 4, Machinedrum MK2, Korg Volca Drum, Volca FM2, MicroKorg, Korg Wavestate, Korg Modwave, Korg Opsix, Microfreak, Casio XW-P1 and a Roland Gaia SH-01. I am thinking of getting an Elektron Digitone and ASM Hydra Synth to complete my setup and maybe an Octatrack and Minifreak in the future. I am also thinking of getting an Elektron Analog Heat. I love Elektron gear.
Another excellent discussion; thank you. I’m spending most of my time with the Syntakt, but I hope to pair it with my Octatrak at some point. I really like the idea of having the Octatrack always listening to what’s coming out of the Syntakt so that I can loop that while I’m changing gears on the ST.
Well, I have not actually done this yet, so I hope @SURCO chimes in on his setup details. But what I’m planning to do is feed the Syntakt outputs to a “thru machine” on the Octatrack so I can combine the sounds from the ST with samples and do typical cool things like pitch and time shifting, etc. Set up track 8 as the master track for the Octatrack and a separate track as a “pickup machine” that is constantly recording the last 64 bars (for example) of what is playing on the master track. I find using pickup machines a little complicated, but you can find details in chapter 9 of the Octatrack manual. Hope this helps.
@@michaelwalsh6913 sounds like a great setup. I actually use a performance template made by another UA-cam EZBOT. It has two ‘sides’ of inputs and three loop recording buffers recording the two sides and the master. Definitely check out his videos on how he made it. It’s where I learned and he’s much better at it than I am.
@@SURCOlive I'm not sure! I'm still trying to decide. I was set in the analog rytm for a month but now I'm ready to purchase I'm having second thoughts. Now I'm thinking of purchasing the digitakt & syntakt for about the same price as just a rytm. What would you choose between the two? Producing gnarly tech tunes, will be running a couple external synths as well. I started this journey looking for a drum machine.
For running other synths the Digitakt and Syntakt are awesome. Lots more channels that route too. Lots of room for expansion if you add any more synths over time. Rytm rules for sound design because for the sample/synth layering capability. Thanks for watching!
I have Analog Rytm and Octa along with Eurorack. I'm relatively inexperienced, but I find this a good combo. I have considered an Analog Heat. This vid is a very informative breakdown.
Thank you! Happy you got something out of it. I have a heat which I waited a long time to get. I was sure it wouldn't be as great as people said... I was wrong. I love it as an end of chain master for my live setup. Thanks so much for watching!
@@GuitarsAndSynths I asked myself that for years as I avoided shelling out for it. As soon as I tried one I was sold. It is unreal how it changes the quality of the output and I’m able to dial in my sound and save it as a preset. I love mine and wouldn’t play a show without it.
Analog rytm and Analog Keys does it all for me.. Still super portable setup really! I fit them in One relatively small Keyboard bag and I´m good to go!
I sold my DN because I just wasn’t using it anymore once I got the Syntakt. The AR is absolutely my favorite but the DT and OT both have things they are great at that the AR can’t do. So tough to chose as they are all great for certain things.
Ultimately, I have Digitone and Syntakt for drums or/and leads.. I use my Digitakt for whathever I want to sample from the internet, mostly vocal quotes from movies or series. Having the trinity brings many too many options. 😍
I recently discovered your channel, it is awesome and I really appreciate your perspective as a producer as it relates to all of the gear you talk about and your set ups, etc. one question can you recommend any video about high hats on the analog rhythm because all of the engines I just can’t get them to sound good so I tend to use samples. Thank you.
Welcome to the channel. I can't think of a specific Rytm hat video, but if I see any out there, I'll post about it. Let me know if you find anything. Maybe I have to make one. :)
Dropping comment for the algo, I need to go and find out more about the difference between digital and analogue and also how the Digitone fits into this. I have Digitakt, still learning that, but do feel I “need” another “instrument” type piece of kit. 😊
Great, so now I know I want a 1000+$ music toy.. thanks for the help.. Jokes aside, I like the fact you included some sound samples at the end of the video. Would love to hear the synth engines of the Rytm and Syntakt on leads on basslines!
i enjoyed ur chill/informative discussion. i bought a digitakt a while ago and loved the interface and industrial design but i dont really need a device like it. i had been looking for an analog drummachine somewhere between a drumbrute and a rytm. i almost bought an analoug four to use like that so i was quite excited when i heard about syntakt. a stripped down cheaper version would have been preferable for me but i still ordered one to try since functionally its exactly what i had been looking for.
never saw your vids before. instant subscribe. i recently got Syntakt with gigs in mind. loving it so far. my only complaint is 4-bar sequencer, but on the other hand, i have MC-101 for more bars.
Glad you are digging the videos. Love the Syntakt for live (along with other Elektron stuff too). The depth of the sequencer with probabilities, conditional triggers, tempo per track, etc all make the 64 step limit far less of an issue. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!
I’m very interested to see an in-depth video of your thought process and workflow when using the Syntakt’s voices for pure synth and melodic sounds. I find myself gravitating towards making drum sounds, even when I’m not trying to!

Rytm is my 100% favorite piece of kit.
I'm thinking of doing something similar, I got a force and kinda hate the workflow...
Nah. I have made hits on my MPC. MPC is time tested. Rytm is just a drum machine.

Ultimately, I have Digitone and Syntakt for drums or/and leads.. I use my Digitakt for whathever I want to sample from the internet, mostly vocal quotes from movies or series. Having the trinity brings many too many options. 😍
Solid setup for sure. Thanks for watching!
i just think of James Joyce when i see people wear those same glasses. Anyway gotta respect the hustle
Check out my most recent live jams. All of the melodics are coming from the Syntakt
i enjoyed ur chill/informative discussion. i bought a digitakt a while ago and loved the interface and industrial design but i dont really need a device like it. i had been looking for an analog drummachine somewhere between a drumbrute and a rytm. i almost bought an analoug four to use like that so i was quite excited when i heard about syntakt. a stripped down cheaper version would have been preferable for me but i still ordered one to try since functionally its exactly what i had been looking for.
I'm sure you will like it. It sounds like exactly what you were looking for. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching!
never saw your vids before. instant subscribe.
i recently got Syntakt with gigs in mind. loving it so far. my only complaint is 4-bar sequencer, but on the other hand, i have MC-101 for more bars.
@@SURCOliveSyntakt is my 1st & only Elektron box so far. anyway, i compare with such boxes as Squarp Pyramid or Oxi One.
I’m very interested to see an in-depth video of your thought process and workflow when using the Syntakt’s voices for pure synth and melodic sounds. I find myself gravitating towards making drum sounds, even when I’m not trying to!
Great idea. I’ll be doing a Syntakt drum sound design video first, but I’ll do one on melodics for sure. Thanks for the idea!
@@SURCOlive Yes! I'd like to see the melodics one for sure!
@@BrockDavisson will do!
Leaving a comment and like for the work you put into this to help your channel even those these are out of my price range. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for the support and for watching!!!
