Such a brilliant teacher ! In less than 2 minutes time I got a load of confidence to finally try tufting. Don't know why everyone else makes it look so damn difficult. Thanks for sharing!
This is a fantastic video. So clear. When my dog (or a friend's dog) "removed" a button I thought the cushion would have to be professionally repaired. For ten bucks of equipment I fixed all three (!), and just fixed one again. I usually takes a few tries to push the needle through the original hole, but it comes out like new. Thanks for posting this.
This worked perfectly, thank you!! So simple yet effective! Next step is to practice tension, but again lost a button just before selling a couch and such a simple fix saved me hundreds of dollars in loss not knowing how simple it could be❤
Fixed four buttons on the couch that my new rescue sibling pups removed. They decided that it’d be a fun game to disconnect the buttons, but thankfully not destroying the cushions or swallowing the buttons! Lol. Thank you for this video for showing me how to fix them. ☺️
I love a tutorial that is straight to the point! I just bought a vintage couch from the 60's and it needs a few buttons repaired. i was worried about doing it but its so simple!
By far the best tufted button tutorial I have found - thank you! Fixed my couch cushion with minimal effort and only needed to watch this once to nail it.
Just what I needed. I like your method. I have the special cording and 20 buttons lined up for reupholstered RV cushions. I'm using shank buttons and the only draw back is the fabric I choose a marine coated canvas has no give. I have experienced this problem in the past with other upholstery work that it's a bad idea to try to use a non stretch fabric in place of one that had some give to it. I had a sample of the fabric and thought it wasn't so stiff and had a softer hand than what I got after ordering 20 yards. So there you go...even when you try to think ahead some times plans don't go as PLANNED. As the saying goes life happens when you are making other plans. I've finished all 12 cushions and just need to get the buttons on. I'm not sure I want to follow the original button holes. I think they look a bit low on the cushion but the fabric is not needle or pin friendly. So I can see a struggle with the needle and cord process to begin with. Once of course you are onto both sides it should work out much better. I like the looks of your three buttons. My dinette seats would be wide enough to add a third button too. The sofa seats are better off with 2 on a side. I made the dinette seats to be flipped to either side so I want good buttons. I may for fun put an animal whimsical button on one side and the celtic dragon buttons the other. That way depending on which way my whimsical side is leaning I have two cute options. The sofa has a lip that wraps over a bar at the back top of the jack knife sofa frame. So I also added strips of velcro to prevent shifting and moving about. I redesigned the entire jack knife sofa so it now has 5 inches wider twin bed and yet will open up to a full or mate with the dinette twin to make a small King size bed for couples. We prefer to use it as two twins so no one has to climb over the other person to get to the restroom in the night. Thank you I like your demonstration the best of all I've watched and you make it so clear. I've done buttons years ago but it's been more than 30 I believe. I thought about skipping them because of the lack of give in the fabric but it's clear looking at the cushions back in the RV they would look more professional and finished. Funny how something so simple makes a difference. The fabric might not give well as it seems to behave more like a vinyl yet it clearly is not vinyl. The coating and weave structure of top fabric behaves like a lot of vinyls. Then again many vinyls give you some give. Thanks for your sharing such a clear and easy to grasp method.
Have to replace these to replace the foam in the sailboat interior cushions. I have been stressing over this for so long. You made this look SO easy. I basically need to buy the tufting needle and thread then.
I know everyone has said it, but this is brilliant! Thank you for make it so easy to replace the buttons on a couch with tufting! I didn’t have twine, but I used fishing line, and it worked great.
I just used your directions to re-button the back cushion and seat cushion of a rocking chair I was fixing for my Ma.. couldn't have done it without you! 😉🏆👍
Thank you so much ! Helped us fix a couple of cushions on our couch which the manufacturers wouldn’t help us with! Had never tufted anything before but after watching a couple of times we felt confident enough to give it a go with great results!!
Lifesaver! Thank you so much for sharing… had a look at a few others but tried this solution and it was quick, easy and end result looks professional! Thanks again for taking the time to share.
I really appreciate this information and the effort you took to explain it. It was straight forward and worked like a charm, not to mention, that it saved me a trip to the upholstery shop.
Best video ever!! Best customer service - EVER! I emailed them about the type of twine and they sent me a yard or so for free and also included a free COVID face mask. When i need furniture again I will be in contact with them. They absolutely rock what is important - thank you Brad :-)
Thank you so much! We just recently bought a new sectional that was pretty pricey. My husband fell asleep on the couch and jammed his elbow into the button just right to pop it. We to our local JoAnn Fabrics got the upholstery thread and 12 inch upholstery needle and had the cushion fixed in 5 minutes easy peasy!
Great video . . . I went to Joann's Fabric Store and bought the Dritz Upholstery Needles 4 pack and Dritz Waxed button thread . . . worked like a charm! Thank You!!!
I cant agree with everyone s comments on what a STELLAR instructional video this was any more. If only videos like yours was the norm vs. The exception. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME AND SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE. QUESTION: I have two long sofa cushions in which the upholstery got me all excited when I spied a zipper but was short lived with the realization that the fabric is still attached to cushions with over 2 dozen or so buttons per cushion Duh... Would it be to ambitious of me to cut all the button cords on a cushion at once so i can wash the fabric and then reinstall it and the buttons after? I have sucessfully machine washed other portions of this set such as cushion covers from a wing back chair (not tufted) so I dont have a concerns about fabric shrinkage or anything but just think it might be naive of me to not atleast consider there could be other factors I'm failing to take into consideration as this woul d be a 1st attempt at replacing a tufted cushion button ever. Any input or advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated I will try my best to be patient and show restrain and not just say F'' it - I'm going for it :) Thanks
this is a fantastic tutorial! is there any chance you have something similar for couches that are only tufted on the front side, when you cant poke through to the back?
Hi I bought a sofa, back cushions and side cushions have buttons and zips, but I can't find away to remove them to clean? Thinking oh they must clip off from the inside? No I can't seem to find away without damaging the covers, so why put zips on the covers, I think its stupidly not thought through properly, any suggestions would be much appreciated
Hey David- They put zippers because they have to get the foam inside the cover to begin with. Then the buttons go on as decoration. No good way to foam a cover without zippers. Bad news is you have to cut off the buttons to get the foam out and reapply the buttons again, but luckily you won't have to do it too often. Buttons only take a minute each once you have done it and have the correct needle. Good Luck!
Those will need to go to a local upholsterer for repair usually. We always have good luck for out of town repairs searching upholsterers on Yelp! Let us know if there is anything else we can help with!
Hey Chris! They make a button like that but we had issues with them always popping off when they weren't supposed to. Number of problem buttons went way down when we made the change. Thanks for watching!
Okay, but that's not a knitting needle. Knitting needles don't have eyes. People, FYI you need a long upholstery needle. Don't ask your knitting friend to lend you a long knitting needle, because it won't work!
Thanks so much, this helped me repair the sofa button I damaged before my wife could notice anything!
So glad it helped!!
Such a brilliant teacher ! In less than 2 minutes time I got a load of confidence to finally try tufting. Don't know why everyone else makes it look so damn difficult. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! In under two minutes I learned more than after watching many tutorials! Great job!
This might be the best video on youtube. I have never seen such a simple perfect tutorial on something ever.
Thanks for the kind words! Glad the video helped out.
Very helpful! I will try to repair mine

Oh no! Glad we were able to help out.
Yay! Thank you! It was way easier than I thought. A button was loose for so long, like a year, and I didn't even need a needle.

Worked like a charm and with a regular needle
Best video ever!! Best customer service - EVER! I emailed them about the type of twine and they sent me a yard or so for free and also included a free COVID face mask. When i need furniture again I will be in contact with them. They absolutely rock what is important - thank you Brad :-)
Could you share the details about the twine?
Brilliant! Who knew it was so easy. Thank you! Off to fun mine now
I puckered my button hole! Looks great, my husband loves it. Thank you!

Thank you thank you, great tutorial.
Thank you! I was confounded if I knew how to do it!

Awesome
washing couch cushion cover hook button removal
How do I get the filling out to wash the cover? Do I need to snap them all and fix them later?
Buttonhole.. 😂
Thank you. Great vid!
this is a fantastic tutorial! is there any chance you have something similar for couches that are only tufted on the front side, when you cant poke through to the back?
Unfortunately something like that you will probably need to have an upholsterer work on.
This video might be what you are looking for.. ua-cam.com/video/1xkS9jNwKnc/v-deo.html
Amazing video.. worked like a charm :) where can I find some good twine?
Just type in NYLON TUFTING TWINE to Amazon and it should pull right up!
How do I get removable buttons , in order to wash the covers?
Can u describe needle name or number and what kinda thread 2 use
Wonderful video, but I don't have that large needle, can I use anything else or it's indispensable?
Gotta have it. Can get one cheap on Amazon!
I have a motorcycle seat and the button is still there it's just the plastic part on top came off, Can you purchase parts of buttons
I’m gonna try this, I think the toughest part will be properly puckering the buttonhole
Aweome

What kind of twine should I get?
We recommend nylon twine. Just type NYLON TUFTING TWINE into amazon and it should pull up!
What about tufted seat cushions that use no button? I have one needing repair
Those will need to go to a local upholsterer for repair usually. We always have good luck for out of town repairs searching upholsterers on Yelp! Let us know if there is anything else we can help with!
Can you show us how to fix one on a couch with no buttons?
Sorry, little outside of my knowledge... will try and get a video next time I'm at the factory! They do it there all the time
What if there’s an intact button on the other side of the cushion?
May just be attached to the string and needs to be pulled out Or it may not be a true tufted button. Have a photo you could send us?
What if my sofa doesn't have buttons for the tufting? Thanks
Probably a pull then and will need to go to the upholsterer for a repair.
Mine is just A Big Circle
I don't understand why they don't put a clip on the buttons so that they can be removed for cleaning?
Hey Chris! They make a button like that but we had issues with them always popping off when they weren't supposed to. Number of problem buttons went way down when we made the change. Thanks for watching!
