This song is about what actually "goes down in the kitchen" (a lyric from Dollhouse) which provides a deeper look into Cry Baby's family life. Sippy Cup is about Cry Baby's mother murdering her father and his mistress. The sippy cup itself is metaphorical for the lack of being willing to acknowledge reality, the unwillingness to confront one’s own reality, especially when it comes to relationships. The "syrup", in this case, is actually alcohol, an allusion to Cry Baby's mother's alcoholism. Putting an alcoholic drink in a sippy cup doesn't mean it's no longer alcohol. No matter how much a person may try to dress up a situation, in the end, the problem persists. The lyric, "Kids are still depressed when you dress them up" describes how no matter what we do on the outside, our inner feelings remain the same.
I was thinking maybe the mother's teacup is like her own sippy cup. She would just walk around with the bottle and only drank it when she poured it into the teacup.
Here’s what actually happened. No Crybaby didn’t die! Her mom caught her dad cheated on her so she decided to kill both of them. Then Crybaby woke up and found her dad and his side chick dead in the kitchen (that’s why in Dollhouse is says “don’t let them see what goes down in the kitchen”) Crybaby’s mom drugged her so she wouldn’t remember what she saw that night. So she didn’t die but she WAS drugged.
The mother already knew she was being cheated on because otherwise she wouldn't be drinking and there was a scene where everyone was watching the T.v and she saw the lipstick mark and pulled out the flask.
aleksia rada No she was only drugged. Melanie Martinez herself explained what happened and she said she was only drugged so she wouldn’t remember what happened.
Also, Melanie actually experienced most of what she's singing about... Just not the family stuff. However, she grew up knowing people who were struggling with family issues. Hence, why she sings about them.
The mom killed the dad and the girl the dad was cheating with. And syrup stands for alcohol because if you put alcohol in a sippy cup it's still the alcohol no matter how you try to show it off to people. At the end the mom drugged crybaby so she would forget what she saw in the kitchen.
She didn't die. Her mum gave her the "syrup" which is a metaphor for the alcohol that her mum is obsessed with. If made her fall asleep and forget what happened
sad awards. Marina and the Diamonds, specifically the Electra Heart album. She also has music videos for that whole album that go in the order to tell a story
Not going to lie as someone with more mental challenges and some depression and anxiety and as well not having a great childhood Melanie makes me feel like I’m not alone even though she didn’t go through it it comforts me knowing someone is caring about our community and how she is open about her mental struggles.
I know many people hate when artistes write about situations that they never personally experienced, particularly sensitive subjects, but I don't mind it at all when Melanie does it. She is the kind of lyricist that isn't just putting her life on paper, but let herself be a storyteller. She's creating a complete story with characters, narratives, drama, character development/regression, etc. It's a complete story chronicling the life of a fictional character but instead of reading it in a book you get to enjoy it musically and visually. And it's the icing on the cake for me as someone who has experienced some of what she writes about to varying degrees is that I can see myself and people I know in the characters while interpreting it through my own lenses. The fiction of it doesn't make it less relatable for people any more than a fictional book would make what the characters go through less relatable. We've fallen into the trap of putting music into these boxes; lyrics should either be meaningless fun or autobiographical and that steals the creativity from the art. I don't think Melanie needed to have gone through these things for her art to be valid any more than Thomas Harris needed to have eaten people while practising Psychiatry to write the Hannibal books.
melanie also wrote a picture book to go with the album which tells the story too. theres a page for each song and i think it definately helps to understand the story better
This song is probably my favorite from Melanie just cause I feel so connected to it. The drug abuse from the parents aspect is something that defined my whole life extremely and I'm glad Melanie spoke about these things in her songs since there are people like me who can relate and feel really connected to her song and Crybaby in general...
i find her music relatable and comforting. it’s kinda like.. it takes away a layer of loneliness and feeling unseen, having certain troubles portrayed artistically. i could see how some who also relate may find some material triggering rather than comforting... with the sensitive yet heavy subject matters that melanie covers, i feel as if having both types of people is a given.
BRO I WAS JUST WATCHING YOUR FIRST PARTS AND WAS SAD BECAUSE THE NEXT PART WASNT OUT, I SUBSCRIBED AND JUST JAMMED OUT TO HER LIKE USUAL THEN I SAW YOU POST OMGG THANK YOU Edit: Also I recommend when you're done with this series, you could try reacting to K-12? Melanie made a film and came back with more songs.
Cavetown is very sad but in a different way. Robbie sings about mental health, depression and expression. He has a song about divorce and lemon boy is about depression. You should listen to him. It’s super calming but can make you cry.
As someone who didn’t have a perfect childhood and saw some things no child should see, I find comfort from melanie’s songs because it feels like she sings everything I feel and that she understands when a lot of people don’t
Funny how I found this channel today looking for melanie reactions, them watched them all refreshed my UA-cam and here u were with a new video 😚😚 sub well deserved.
You should listen to Alec Benjamin he has a lot of good songs even though most of them are really sad. At least I thought some of them were pretty sad.
Her mom drugged her so she wouldn't remember what she saw, crybaby sitting at the end of the video represents her childhood innocence dying, not her physical self also in the sad competition YOU GOTTA ADD TWENTY ONE PILOTS !! lol their self titled album hits different bruh
You should react to some AURORA 🥺 Her voice is ethereal and she always has great lyrical content. My recommendations would be Murder Song (5,4,3,2,1) at the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize concert, The Seed, Runaway, and Queendom. 🤗
THE NEXT SONG IS CAROUSEL also the mother killed the father and the lover of the father, she never kills Cry Baby only sleeps her The brother stopped dating why he was Melanie's boyfriend during Dollhouse and when they shot the video they were no longer dating
Sippy cup is honestly my favorite song of her. I love mel because she doesn't make completely different song, it's a whole story that leads on to one another explaining the backstory of everything.
The next one is Carousel, and the two people the mom killed was Crybabys dad and his side chick, and she only gave Crybaby drugs to forget what she saw
This song is definitely comforting coming from someone who went through hardships similar growing up. It feels like you're not alone. Even though she, thankfully, didn't have to experience these things it's nice to relate to something in mainstream media. Life is hard, and music that can portray the ugly stuff well is a beautiful thing.
hey! just wanted to say i really like your melanie react videos!! you pay attention to the videos and the lyrics and really get the message! :) also, just wanted to tell you melanie did have a good upbringing, no where near as bad as the character ‘Crybaby’ however it wasn’t perfect. melanie is bisexual and while she was growing up her parents made many homophobic jokes (they fully accept her now) and she felt she couldn’t talk about her feeling. you will see this in the song and music video ‘Soap’. hope you react to more of her music!! so yes, melanie did have a pretty good upbringing and isn’t crybaby but they are similar and based off each other. melanie also became famous off ‘the voice’ (the tv show). she didn’t win but got pretty far! her audition with toxic is absolutely fantastic, i would highly recommend it! anyway, keep up the great content!!
I did have a rough childhood. I really won't go into it but I love Melanie and artists like her. It makes me feel more of a connection to the music because it actually means something to me.
I didn’t catch it the first time I listened to this song at all but the lyrics “got weights in your pockets when you go to the doctor, your favorite candy’s cotton that’s why all your teeth are rotten” is a reference to anorexia I believe, it goes along with the theme of trying to put up the illusion of perfection when in fact it’s definitely not

The mom didn't kill her I think she put her to sleep and made her think it was a dream? And I think the angel is supposed to resemble her dead innocence
As someone who does go through things like this (no one was murdered in my household ) it is comforting to hear music because even if she hadent fone through this i know that this is a problem more common than it should be and that i am not alone
Melanie didn't have a perfect childhood, she got bullied a lot which is where the idea of the "cry baby" character came from in the first place, however she didn't grow up in a broken home. So next song for when you read this is carousel you’ll like it they actually used that song in commercial for American Horror Story, and no the whole family isn’t dead the mom only killed her husband aka Crybaby’s dad and his lover also the mom for the videos was once one of Melanie’s friend to get to know more about her please Google her you’ll actually love her music it’s not the usual music many artists use their music to tell stories
I think the “your favorite candy’s cotton” lyric might actually be referring to OxyContin (“contin” ~ “cotton”), especially since opiod addiction has become such a major problem in the last decades, and it affects so many small town / suburban communities where people don’t even notice until someone ODs...real sad but like that’s my interpretation, and it goes hand in hand with the mom’s alcoholism bc they can often be coexisting addictions...
MARINA's Electra Heart album has also a story as the songs on the album progresses. She created a character named Electra Heart and I really do believe that she's the third person you're looking for. After Crybaby, please do Electra Heart. ❤🍿

aleksia rada No she was only drugged. Melanie Martinez herself explained what happened and she said she was only drugged so she wouldn’t remember what happened.
Melanie grew up in a town where a lot of families weren't really what they seem, she had a good childhood tho.

Melanie didn't have a perfect childhood, she got bullied a lot which is where the idea of the "cry baby" character came from in the first place, however she didn't grow up in a broken home. "He does"
After you go through this album you should check out her recent album K-12 she created a movie of it but there is music videos that are separate!

The third person in competition is DEFINITELY MARINA, formerly known as MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS.
