The sippy cup itself is a metaphor for the lack of being willing to acknowledge reality and the unwillingness to confront one’s own reality, especially when it comes to relationships. The "syrup", in this case, is actually alcohol, an allusion to Cry Baby's mother's alcoholism. Putting an alcoholic drink in a sippy cup or another cup doesn't mean it's no longer alcohol. No matter how much a person may try to dress up a situation (any, not just the one shown), in the end, the problem persists. The lyrics, "Kids are still depressed when you dress them up", describes how no matter what we do on the outside, our inner feelings remain the same. Also, Melanie's character CryBaby with angel wings represents the death of her innocence after seeing her father's body 'Weights in your pockets when you go to the doctor's' - having an eating disorder and putting weights to make it seem you weight more 'Your favourite candy's cotton, that's why all your teeths are rotten' - This is a reference to OxyContin addiction, a slang term for oxy is cotton plus continued use can ruin your teeth, or it can also be interpreted as a reference to an eating disorder. A lot of people with eating disorders will eat cotton balls to satiate their hunger without having any calorie intake & obv eating disorders destroy your teeth as well (like constantly provoked vomiting). Very clever wordplay from Melanie. "Carousel" is next in storyline, recommend reacting to songs in order so it'll all make sense
I thought the "your favorite candy's cotton, thats why all your teeth are rotten" referred to an eating disorder (bulimia) as vomit can degrade your teeth or something. I didnt think of this.
@@Bughby I assume "Sex don't sleep when the lights are off" means that even if the sex is happening in darkness it still happened. Another interpretation I just thought of is that "lights off/out" is sometimes used to mean being asleep or unconscious, so it could also be a darker situation where a person is being taken advantage of while they're unaware ("The sex doesn't stop just because you're asleep" type of situation). "Of course it's a corpse that you keep in the cradle" could be referring to a mother whose baby died and because they are in denial, they keep the body in the cradle and/or take care of it to pretend that it's still alive because they can't handle the reality that their baby has died. Keeping on theme with the denial and stuff.
i love how dark and heavy this one is, not a lot of music artists have the guts to talk about the subjects that she does and i love that about her. definitely recommend tag you’re it/milk and cookies next if you want to see how dark this album gets, or if you guys want to continue in chronological order, so carousel next!
If you remember in dollhouse when Mel sings " one day you will see what goes down in the kitchen," so basically, Sippy Cup is showing what went down in the kitchen it's a continuation of Dollhouse and a deeper look into the family that she introduced in Dollhouse
also in the crybaby music video, we see crybaby's tears filling up the dollhouse, kind of setting it up for the second song/ video. the first three songs are basically a mini trilogy!
Crybaby’s song/video story in order - Crybaby (video), Dollhouse (video), Sippy Cup (video), Carousel (video), Alphabet Boy (video), Soap/Training Wheels (video), Pity Party (video), Tag You’re It/Milk and Cookies (video), Pacify Her, (video), Mrs Potato Head (video), Mad Hatter (video), Play Date, Teddy Bear, and Cake. Then her next album, K-12, has a whole movie with the songs in order and it’s Cry Baby more grown up and older in high school. In her current album, Cry Baby is dead, and she has reincarnated as an alien looking fairy. Enjoy this rabbit hole guys!
What I love about the “and syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup” verse is because sippy cups were designed to make any drink easier to drink but when you think of syrup you know it’s sticky and it’s not really liquid like so when she uses that verse it’s like it’s fighting against each other holding many meanings. Have always loved Melanie and I love how much of a musical genius she is.
LOVED THIS!!!! I love how every song that comes out, Eric says, “okay, THIS might be my new favorite” 🤣 Cry Baby is just an introduction to all of the real shit Melanie discusses. K-12 covers so many more. Can’t wait for more m!!!!
This song finally reveals the events that follow what takes place in "Dollhouse". This song is about what actually "goes down in the kitchen" (a lyric from "Dollhouse"). It provides a deeper look into Cry Baby's family life. "Sippy Cup" is about Cry Baby's mother murdering her father and his mistress.
Yeah!! They’re some of her best songs! I love A LOT of her songs!! Besides these two, other songs I enjoy are Dollhouse, Tag You’re It, Carousel, Crybaby, Alphabet Boy, Milk and Cookies, Training Wheels, Show and Tell, Teddy Bear, Cake, Principal, Lunchbox Friends, Sippy Cup, and Pity Party.
Great reaction as always you guys! Please do ''Tag You're It/Milk and Cookies'' next, it's also very dark in topic and yet very groovy and catchy, I think you guys will like it a lot
i started listening to melanie since i was think it was when i was 7-8 and i still love her to this day she not only puts a sad backstory to her songs and also puts up a cool beat and what people go through in real life but she tells her own story of what happened to her and what she does as a artist. i think shes very incredible as a singer and artist thats why she is my favorite singer. i relate to alot of her songs. and her as a person shes genuinly so sweet and nice to all of her fans and the world and she does so much for everyone and i just love her so much.❤🩹
I CAN NOT wait for “tag you’re it” & “milk and cookies” they have to be watched back to back and I remember watching/listening for the first time and thinking “wow this artist really touched on this topic and such an unique yet disturbing way, but not taking away from the message/issue”
Yall need to watch and listen to her songs IN ORDER, IT FOLLOWS A STORY, THINGS WILL CORRELATE A LOT MORE!!!! She has videos for all the songs in her first 2 albums, and he newest album the 3rd, ending the trilogy, she is making videos for them all too!
As a crybaby (a Melanie Martinez fan), my favorite thing about Melanie Martinez with her music, she is very relatable to a lot of people with different things. She says in the form of lyrics how some people with something that they are dealing with are feeling. Melanie has been my music idol since her song carousel and she has helped me with the number one thing I dealt with which is anxiety and having seizures. All of her albums are a story of her character crybaby, you're technically watching and listening to the entire story of crybaby.
The song is about how trying to hide something will not work, as you will always have the truth running through the back of your mind, and the fact that you must face the reality. Multiple metaphors are used in the song, the main of which is the subject of the song, the "sippy cup". This metaphor explains that pouring alcohol into a sippy cup to forget about your problems does not work, as the alcohol does not change to a different liquid in the sippy cup, symbolising that your problems do not change or disappear even when you try to ignore them or forget about them. In the story line and music video, this song is when Crybaby's mother kills her husband, as he is obviously cheating. The song explains "what goes down in the kitchen" (lyric from Dollhouse), and why her mother is an alcoholic. Crybaby experiences it all happen, but her mother gives her a drug to put her to sleep and forget about what she has seen.
I find melanie genius because it seems her music is intentional commercial-sounding. She uses catchy melodies and trending lyrics, I feel it draws in a big audience, and an even bigger and more intimate audience when you actually listen to what she’s saying
This song is so deep and it's crazy to think that I listened to her in middle school thinking I was already relating to her on a deep level but I'm just starting to realize now there was more to her and her music. She sheds light on things that need to be discussed and issues that need addressed❤️ That's powerful that she does that in her own style and be unapologetic about it. Loved the reaction sm guys and I'm so happy y'all are enjoying her and her music! Keep it up! If you go in order Carousel is next but I'd happily recommended Carousel itself, Milk and Cookies, or Mad Hatter❤️
I was expecting the fatality button when she said ‘all the makeup in the world won’t make you less insecure’ - love MM. glad you guys have checked her out and you enjoy her music.
Her music is truly amazing. She's not afraid to talk about mental health issues and familial issues in general that SO many big artists tend to turn their backs on when in reality SO many people are struggling with one or both to some capacity. Not saying other artists don't talk about it, but there's so much gravity to her music because of the lyrics and the music videos themselves. Please continue with her stuff, it's truly fascinating jumping down the rabbit hole of her music. And if you're interested in listening to more artists who openly talk about mental health and have a somewhat similar vibe, PLEASE consider checking out DPR IAN. He's a Korean-Australian artist who has bipolar disorder and DID (dissociative identity disorder), and his music is about said disorders, with some very interesting lore added to it. He has amazing songs, and equally beautiful music videos (he actually directs, edits, and produces his own music videos!!) that really help tell the story he wants to tell.
It makes me so mad that a lot of people dont see her artistic style, especially her topics and musics. She's really underrated and deserves so much more attention. I'm glad yall are reacting to her music!
Rykerroad just wanna say you are my favourite reactors ever! I love rap and I love metal and everything I listen to you seem to listen to aswell. When I got a notification to say you had reacted to Melanie Martinez I was over the moon. If you haven’t already, have a listen to Doll House. I love music that highlight the struggle of mental health and Doll House is great representing toxic families. It’s worth a listen to! Keep rocking you guys!

i love watching you guys react to melanie martinez! her music and videos are great. really hope you keep watching them in the "right" order and excited to see you guys continue this journey!
At this point, you guys should react to all the Melanie songs and albums in order, like pull up the tracklist and take it from there because both of you guys reactions are awesome! 😎👍👍 Keep it up, you two!
Deffidently do her trilogy in order!! This is her first song on her first album!! Her 3 albums are Crybaby, K-12, and Portals, they all follow this same character named Crybaby, theres lots ot hevay themes always sung and brought up in childlike ways. Shes an amazing artist, i know yall loved the Sleep token trilogy, and now billie eilish, and now Melanie Martinez, she will be a big hit on your channel for sure!
When i first heard this song, i thought it was about the mom accidentally killing the baby while she drinks to forget her husband's affair. "Hes still dead when your done with the bottle", the baby will still be dead when you come back to reality. "Of course its a corpse that you keep in the cradle". Literally the baby's body is still in the cradle, has been for some time. "Syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup". Immediately thought of how some addicts have given their kids cough syrup and alcohol in their bottles and sippy cups to keep them quiet/asleep while they partake of or go score whatever they're addicted to. Many babies and children have died this way. I had no idea that the song was about the mom killing the dad and his mistress.
Thanks for the reaction guys, I been waiting for this one! Sippy cup is one of my favorites of Mel's, she is just amazing at reflecting what she wants to say in her lyrics and videos. Next in order would be "carousel" and I think you'll like it! I recommend that you activate the subtitles on the videos so you don't miss anything Because the videos are very important to understand the History ;)
Hy guys! I commented on the last video but I guess it went unnoticed, but I suggest going through order since all of her clips follow a timeline and story Cry baby album + extras 1- Cry Baby 2 - Pacify Her 3 - Alphabet Boy 4 - Sippy cup 5 - Tag you're it / Milk and Cookies double frature 6 - Soap / Training Wheels double feature 7 - Pity party Extra: Mad hatter and Mrs Potatoe Head K-12 (There's an official movie where all the clips are compiled in chronological order) 1 - Wheels on the bus 2 - Class Fight 3 - The Principal 4 - Show & Tell 5 - Nurses Office 6 - Drama Club 7 - Strawberry Shortcake 8 - Lunch Box Friends 9 - Orange Juice 10 - Detention 11 - Detention 12 - Teacher's Pet 13 - Highschool Sweethearts 14 - Recess She went on hiatus for a few years after k-12 and came back with the new album last year So far we have: 1 - Death 2 - Void 3 - Evil 4 - Tunnel Vision 5 - Faerie Soirée Btw, loving the reacts guys, i don't miss any bmth react and now I'm very engaged in your opinion on Melanie, her songs are very deep and meaningful, especially when it comes to childhood trauma, politics and sensitive topics about the reality of minorities and women in general, its very nice watching you guys react to it, so thank you, its being an interesting journey
I love this song it is very dark as it's about losing your self to a point of not having a grip on reality and how it affects those around you are basically changed forever it is about like losing your family from divorce though in the video its from death which is how Kids see divorce it's a very heavy topic that causes trauma
All of Mel’s songs tells the story of Crybaby, her persona in a movie she made, the songs relate to her characters life and aims to relate to regular people. She made a movie about Crybaby’s story and listening to the songs with the music videos helps to put the story together! you should make a video watching the movie, it’s on YT i’m pretty sure. (idk if u knew this i’m just lyk)
I really hope you guys reacat to her K-12 album soon! I think you would both enjoy it for all the same reasons you have enjoyed her music so far, but seeing her evolution as an artist at the same time! She really steps it up with each release, and her Portals album is phenomenal!
Definitely excited to see more people go on the journey of listening to Melanie martinez, if you're interested in following the order of her songs as they were released her first album is Crybaby which includes all the songs you've listened to so far; Crybaby, Dollhouse, Sippy cup, Carousel, Alphabet boy, Soap/Training wheels, Pity party, Tag, your it/Milk and cookies, pacify her, Mrs. Potato head, Mad hatter, with the deluxe tracks Play date, Teddy bear, & Cake Her next album is K-12 Wheels on the bus, Class fight, the principal, Show and tell, Nurse's office, Drama club, Strawberry shortcake, Lunchbox friends, Orange juice, Teacher's pet, High school sweethearts, Recess Then there's the After school EP Notebook, Test me, Brain & heart, Numbers, Glued, Feild Trip, The bakery And lastly her latest album Portals Death, Void, Tunnel vision, Faerie soirée, Light shower, Spider web, Leeches, Battle of the Larynx, The contortionist, Moon cycle, Nymphology, Evil, Womb, and the deluxe tracks, Powder, Pluto, Milk of the siren Hopefully you enjoy the ride, I don't think there's a song of their's I dislike
I'm so excited for when you guys are done with Dollhouse and Crybaby (1st & 2nd album) and get to K-12 that album is an entire movie and it's just one of the most creative and deep things that happened in Popmusic this past decade
I’m glad you guys are reacting to this. I really wanna see your input. Please continue on with the series. Don’t forget this is her playing as a character so she’s going to pretty much start out and grow up. Try to stay in the same category just like Star Wars, just like twenty one pilots.
If you're planning on listening to the songs in her K-12 album, I'd recommend watching them in order, the whole album is a movie and every song is from a apart of it. Great videos, keep it up guys! 💪
Also, Melanie's character CryBaby with angel wings represents the death of her innocence after seeing her father's body
'Weights in your pockets when you go to the doctor's' - having an eating disorder and putting weights to make it seem you weight more
'Your favourite candy's cotton, that's why all your teeths are rotten' - This is a reference to OxyContin addiction, a slang term for oxy is cotton plus continued use can ruin your teeth, or it can also be interpreted as a reference to an eating disorder.
When I really break down dollhouse, I feel like the dollhouse is a representation of dissociation. I feel like that ties in with what your saying too.
I rather think of a eating disorder, some girls eat Cotton as a Snack we even see it in TV and Netflix shows and the bullimia Ruins your teeth
I want to know the meaning behind the lyrics sex don’t sleep when the lights are off and of course it’s a corpse that you keep in the cradle
I agree. But I love that she talks about it as most people are scared to talk about those topics
If I were to recommend any songs, it would be Strawberry Shortcake or Alphabet Boy, like the word play on Alphabet Boy
@@Ineedsleep5940 oh yes those are good ones to.
Yes exactly I love her music so much my God sister is 10 and loves listening to Melanie too the lyrics hit
I like how ur last name is Martinez!
If you remember in dollhouse when Mel sings " one day you will see what goes down in the kitchen," so basically, Sippy Cup is showing what went down in the kitchen it's a continuation of Dollhouse and a deeper look into the family that she introduced in Dollhouse
Ohhhh I didn't know that, thanks !!!
also in the crybaby music video, we see crybaby's tears filling up the dollhouse, kind of setting it up for the second song/ video. the first three songs are basically a mini trilogy!
Her songs disturb the comforted and comfort the disturbed
this is spot on
Melanie: *whispering* "in a sippy cup"
ERIC: *pulls out GIANT ass popcorn bucket and drinks from it* 🤣😂
the fact that she was only 16 when she wrote this whole album is insane…and she wrote it pretty much by herself
"If they say to kill yourself, then you will try it" is just heartbreaking.
LOVED THIS!!!! I love how every song that comes out, Eric says, “okay, THIS might be my new favorite” 🤣 Cry Baby is just an introduction to all of the real shit Melanie discusses. K-12 covers so many more. Can’t wait for more m!!!!
I TOTALLY agree!

When u realise why she's dressed like an angel
First time I saw that I cried
Mad hatter is a great one of hers!
YES!
and Soap
They should do it in order to
Commenting here because I suggested that combo on the last one. Agreed, they need to do them either together or in order.
i started listening to melanie since i was think it was when i was 7-8 and i still love her to this day she not only puts a sad backstory to her songs and also puts up a cool beat and what people go through in real life but she tells her own story of what happened to her and what she does as a artist. i think shes very incredible as a singer and artist thats why she is my favorite singer. i relate to alot of her songs. and her as a person shes genuinly so sweet and nice to all of her fans and the world and she does so much for everyone and i just love her so much.❤🩹

After sippy cup, come Carousel, in order in the album! You guys will love the conceot of carosel and the bass and all the cool music effects!
I find melanie genius because it seems her music is intentional commercial-sounding. She uses catchy melodies and trending lyrics, I feel it draws in a big audience, and an even bigger and more intimate audience when you actually listen to what she’s saying

This is probably one of my favorite songs off of Crybaby next to Teddy Bear. I cannot wait for you to make the adventure into K-12 🥰
sippy cup is a sequel to dollhouse !
That's why we love Melanie Martinez ❤
Pls listen to them in order! The story will make sense if you do so
Edit: In this song crybaby’s innocence has died seeing her dad corpse

Melanie is a great artist. Love all of her albums, and her most recent (Portals) is perfection.
This album and her one after all of the film clips are a story, they all join up, she is amazing

yessss I was so excited to see the reactions to this one! It still gives me chills
This actually the 3rd song on the album.
WHAT A MESSAGE! 🥺 👏👏👏✌️🫶🔥💯
More Melanie Martinez please. Thanks!
Loved it!
This is my favorite song out of Crybaby. Melanie is brilliant. I hope you react to all of K-12. (I'm binging your Melanie reactions).
Omg, She's Just Amazing!! 🥰
You should listen to Soap/Training Wheels. It's really good.
Can't wait for you guys to listen to all her songs
Thanks for the reaction guys, I been waiting for this one! Sippy cup is one of my favorites of Mel's, she is just amazing at reflecting what she wants to say in her lyrics and videos.
Next in order would be "carousel" and I think you'll like it! I recommend that you activate the subtitles on the videos so you don't miss anything Because the videos are very important to understand the History ;)

Btw, loving the reacts guys, i don't miss any bmth react and now I'm very engaged in your opinion on Melanie, her songs are very deep and meaningful, especially when it comes to childhood trauma, politics and sensitive topics about the reality of minorities and women in general, its very nice watching you guys react to it, so thank you, its being an interesting journey
Very nice!
Do “High School Sweethearts” Please!! 😭🙏🏻🙏🏻
This one as been my favorite since it came out❤❤❤
You guys should listen to “Tag You’re It” next for sure
I love this song it is very dark as it's about losing your self to a point of not having a grip on reality and how it affects those around you are basically changed forever it is about like losing your family from divorce though in the video its from death which is how Kids see divorce it's a very heavy topic that causes trauma
More Melanie ❤

Ohh can't wait for yall to look at her other great songs plz the movie!
YESS ❤
It's best to follow the album songs in order. You should def react to carousel next!
If you're planning on listening to the songs in her K-12 album, I'd recommend watching them in order, the whole album is a movie and every song is from a apart of it.
Great videos, keep it up guys! 💪
Tag You’re It/Milk and Cookies has some more dark themes, but really important and I love the music video. Definitely recommend those
My goodness, I love these tracks
