Dey, was a Bengali actor, singer and music composer and teacher born in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was S.D. Burman's first musical teacher and mentor. He worked for New Theatres in Kolkata until 1940. He is best remembered for his Kirtan songs.

One of my most Favourite Song by this Legendary K.C.Dey is " Teri Gathrri Main Laga Chor Musafir Jag Zara " From Dhoop Chhaon Movie.
Dey sang and composed music for movies from 1932 till 1946. He did also act in movies in the same period. Dey used to travel from Calcutta to Bombay (Mumbai) to take part in movies. In 1942 he moved to Bombay. Dey quit movies in 1946 after both his music and singing started lacking his previous quality. KC Dey died as a bachelor in Kolkata in 1962. Famous playback singer Manna Dey is his nephew.

We bengalees had produced K C Dey Pankaj Mallick K L Saigal (Whom I considered Bengalee) Kanika Suchitra ,Hementa Dedabrata Manna Manabebra Dananjoy Shyamal Subir Sen Kalim Sarafi Mohinujamman Chowdhury etc and musicians like Nachiketa Sudhin Das gupta AND SALIL CHOWDHURY etc but sad to say at present we are represented by Srikanta Lopamudra rupak raghab boal kalochita santanu moitra etc who has got no feeling realisation & musical education and sense and with them we have to live.
Among the latest musicians I consider Shantanu Moitra has capabilities to produce tunes like Salil Chowdhury, R.D.Burman, Illiaya Raja....rest are far away from old classic era.... reason is unlike earlier composors they jump into music directon without learning Indian & western classical music. Impatiens to earn money.
