Donadea 50k 2023 - A Runners Perspective

- The Irish 50K Championship is comprised of 10 loops of a 5km forest trail. I was very fortunate to pair up with Brian Buckley for the first 30K and we trotted along talking all things ultra running. There is a 5 hour cut off so the atmosphere in those final minutes was electric. Hats off to Anto (race director) and all the volunteers for putting on what is a very unique race.

Thanks Graham, I hope you’re keeping well. Yeah sometimes things just seem to come together nicely on the day and that was the case at Donadea. Don’t think I’ll be beating that time for 50k any time soon but certainly glad to have been able to put that marker down. I hope you’re own endeavors are going well 👍

Thanks for that, yeah running with Brian made the first 30k whizz by. It was fortuitous that we paired up when we did. That final finisher footage is classic and you gotta love the trophy she received 😊

That’s the interesting thing about the sport, you are never 100% sure about how you’re going to perform. Thankfully it all worked out very well on this occasion. I think the gel and water every 5k kept my energy levels in the right zone. Thanks for watching 👍
What a great day at the office Dave, bloody awesome performance, someone who can run as far as you do should not be allowed to run that fast!! Superb performance and top 10 in a National event is something to be rightfully proud off!!
Cheers Jon, I could not have hoped it would go so well. I think running with Brian set me up for success. I was able, thankfully, to keep that pace going to the finish line. The gel/water every 5k were instrumental also. So far so good in 2023. Only one more race left this side of the pond before I hit L.A. Thanks again my friend 👍

Well done, on your pace and the consistent place. Looks like it is quicker to do it in miles! That five hours is a tough time to get under, not sure I'd make it. Love the last place trophy, can't beat a bit of Irish humour.
Thanks Tadeusz, yeah that final-finisher-trophy is hilarious. I felt sorry for the very next guy who crossed the line only to be told he didn’t finish.

Thanks David, no, I have never done a back yard ultra and with the way my calendar is set up I will not squeeze one in this year either. 🤔 Or may be at the very end of the year 😉. I’ll get around to one eventually. There are so many races I want to do. Thanks for watching 👍
