"Little" Joe Weatherly was my Mom's cousin. My Grandfather always talked about his nephew the racer, who died out in California, whenever I talked about wanting to race. I didn't realize, until about 5 years ago, just who he meant.
this was the first track i raced on back in the 70`s......ran formula 'c' open wheel before going to stock! unfortunately my racing career lasted only 5 yrs.......i do agree with curtis johnson those cars back then were really loud and they made yer insides quiver ....loved every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was at this race sitting outside of turn #6. The sound track doe's not convey the reality of un-muffled monster 427 V8's, the ground shook & the sound was tremendous!
Fireball Roberts and Dave McDonald were both killed in races later that year, Roberts in s NASCAR race at Charlotte, McDonald a week later at Indianapolis.
Lol thats why the Wood Brothers were so amazing back then... the fact that they got 2 tires on and fuel in under 20 seconds was unheard of. Hell doing that under 40 seconds was considered good.
Look at Ken Miles racing those cars just before the Le Mans GT40/Ferrari fun, and 2 years before he sadly died at the same track. Back when you either had a crew cut and smoke 2 packs of reds a day, or you were a hippy. @3:24 RIP Joe Weatherly, turn 6 claimed a great driver that day. @2:42 Dave MacDonald 4 months later in a bad fiery crash at Indy 500. Lots of greats in this video that ran fast and burned hard.
Big difference in race broadcasting here in Australia. Almost half of this tape was the preliminaries and the rest was overwhelmed by the music. Here major sports events are usually aired live. During the broadcast there are no ads or pre-race bullshit. The networks use these events as a lure to watch other shows that do carry advertising.
05 is west coast racer dave james. he also ran 06 and 08. in 1968 he finished 8 th no brakes. my dad built his engines and i got to play in the car. dave was the silent partner in len heating and air conditioning in west L A ON Pico and gateway near Kelbo;s polynesian resturant also Billingsley's. Barbara Billingsley's son resturant [ leave it to beaver mom ]. west coast racer scotty cain finished 9 th.
I don't know much about the VHS set you speak of but I do know that this was filmed by Dick Wallen, one of the finest cinematographers American racing has ever known. Dick filmed USAC sprints and championship trail events, sports cars, NASCAR and other racing for nearly thirty years. His videos are available through his company, Dick Wallen Productions.
I actually really enjoy the music in this clip. I've been looking for the tracks for a year or two now. I've found Born to Run, Data Express, and Stress Factor. Now I'm just looking for the first two and the last two. On a racing note, I really do think Joe could've been an all-time great if not for his crash. He was the second back-to-back champion in NASCAR history, which is absolutely nothing to scoff at.

"Tragically, Weatherly died in the crash"
*upbeat 80s pop music continues*
RIP "Little Joe" Weatherly
1:32 For anyone who just saw Ford vs. Ferrari - that's Ken Miles
He sadly died at that same track less than 2 years later.

+104thDIVTimberwolf he was also a 2 time nascar champ
he was involved in the daytona 500 finish of 1959 - finished 5th
Is that true 104thDIVTimberwolf?
@@NascarProfan18 yes. Weatherly was my Mom's maiden name and is my middle name.

@VintageMotorsportCrashes Are you the death police?
I was a Riverside local as a kid in the 60's and 70's
That track ate up alot of hot drivers!!

Dave Macdonald in this.
And 4 months later on the 2nd lap in the Indy 500 😥

I marvel at what was considered a quick pitstop back in these days.

Has it not occurred that this was from a VHS released over 20 years after the actual race?
Tragically, Weatherly died instantly in the crash…
Now we head over to Kurt Loder and Martha Quinn for an MTV news update
Why is there such cheerful music when they cover Joe Weatherly's crash?

Buck Baker was actually the first back to back champ when he won his titles in 1956&57. But nonetheless Joe Weatherly was gone too soon.
Also where did you find the music tracks?

part of this is from 1963 - Ken Miles, Augie Pabst, and Bob Bondurant did not race in 1964
NoviRanger43 look at 2:39 that was also 1963 bc the driver that flipped is Danny Weinberg and he wasn’t in the race.

what is this music called 2:45

Who is the narrator? He sounds familiar.
I think Hal Halbrook.
Dan Gurney for President!
2:10 what this music?
Strong Arm by Derek Wadsworth.
now...if this is racingcars, why can´t they take a turn on the track without skidding around like Bambi on ice?
Only start for ken miles
It did show Ken in this tape, but Ken was in the 1963 running of this race, not 1964
Good 1966 film. Horrible '80's soundtrack
beloog99 it is a 1964 race
A good site to purchase Dick Wallen's videos from is coastal181.com.
Great video of the racing but the background music is annoying. It would have been better with audio of racing engines.
