I picked up a Hot Rod magazine in 1963 when I was 12 years old. This is in South Africa. I read about Tiny Lund winning this race in his English Motors Ford Galaxie. Became a fan of NASCAR then. Not so much anymore.
I recognized every car manufacturer by sight in this race !!! 🚘 If Nascar had kept to road car specs Detroit would be selling 2 door sedans today instead of SUVs 🚙.Our loss 😢.

Two High Schools back then (at least 10 now) and Fireball attended the "other" HS but dated a girl in my class. First NASCAR race was the 1950 Beach race. NASCAR is the only sport I keep up with. The fans are spoiled now with all races on TV. So they complain about everything. Back in the day we had only radio and not all races were broadcast. Many drivers were killed driving cars that were not constructed properly. A few years in the late 60s NASCAR allowed a few locations to watch the 500 on closed circuit tv. No major cities. In 1967 we went up to Macon, GA to watch the 500 when Mario won it in that Holman-Moody Ford Fairlane. In 1968 we went up to Columbus, GA to watch the 500 on CCTV. Yes, I believe racing today... with all the changes...is many times better. Better drivers now but I was a David Pearson devotee along with Bobby Allison and later with Davey. My daughter and I attended Davey's funeral and we still cry about Davey. The end result on safety is that deaths have been practically eliminated. Speeding on pit row...I saw Bill Elliot's right wheel changer totally crammed up into the wheel well and killed. Accumalated point system now...much better, no more 'point racing' just to have a "good day". No more knowing who the CUP Chmpion is with 3 races left. Races ending under yellow...robbing the fans of a good finish. Over time has made racing better. No more single file restarts...all the lead lap cars on the outside and the laps-down cars on the inside. Many dominating cars lost because of those laps-down cars. I love today's double file restarts with the leader getting to choose which line he prefers. No more races where the leader is 2 or more laps ahead of 2nd place. We saw Ned Jarret win the Souther 500 in 1965 by a 14 lap lead. Bottom line...we'll just have to agree to disagree. But seriously, go back and watch all the old races on youtube. Do it with an opened mind...you might have different emotions about the racing back then. It was mostly the same on the track then as now...single file with a few passes.
Those stock cars sounded more like warbirds in full flight. And to think there were WWII vets in the pits. Glad they made it home for a big day at the track.
..yes, not identical cars with painted-on identities made to resemble actual cars that they are not...and foreign makes don't belong in Nascar, either...
As a 90s kid and for someone that didn't get into the sport until the early 2000s have to say this is amazing stuff from back then. Really love the cars and the racing back then. Just cool.
Its still sad that Tiny died too soon. Tiny Lund was ( DeWayne Louis " Tiny" Lund ). BORN November 14,1929 in Harlan, Iowa , United States. DIED August 17,1975 (aged 45) Cause of death , Racing accident at Talladega . Achievements, 1973 NASCAR Grand National East Series Champion , 1968 Grand American Champion ,1970 Grand American Champion ,1971 Grand American champion. He also won The 1963 Daytona 500 Win and was a Daytona Permatex 300 winner . Awards ,International Motorsports Hall of Fame (1994) and Named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers (1998) 303 race(s) run over 20 year(s) .
One reason for that was that USAC finally allowed their drivers to run in the Daytona 500 in 1963. They had actually wanted to do so for a couple of years, but USAC refused. They finally relented in 1963, and the result was that the fields for the next few Daytona 500s, except for the 1965 race, had not only the best NASCAR drivers of the day, but also saw USAC's top drivers challenge NASCAR's best throughout the balance of the decade, with a few international road racers occasionally thrown in. Having a 50-car field also helped in that regard, because when they downsized the field from 50 to 40 cars for safety purposes, that diminished the number of drivers from other forms of racing that would attempt to qualify for the Daytona 500. Frankly, that's one thing I'd like to see return to NASCAR's biggest event
I didnt know that USAC was holding their drivers back. I thought it was NASCAR doing that. Letting them ALL come is what made this race GREAT. Im disappointed Jackie Stewart didnt give it a shot though (and Hill and Clark). I try to imagine if they had kept this up through to the 70s and we could see McCluskey/Nelson White, Tovella, Bowsher etc. in those Birds and Talledegasgoing head tohead.
And it took a crewman being crushed to death to slow them down. I remember when the death occurred. The pit reporter told us with his facial expression what he wouldn’t tell us with his mouth.

Man talk about these cars being REAL production stock cars, they still had the factory door handles and key locks in the doors! I think by the early 70s they'd brought in solid bodies.

It's good to see Firestone racing in NASCAR. The Wood Bros., Ford, and Firestone. No tire changes. I think this was the only time in the 500 or any NASCAR RACE BUT I old be wrong on that.

Nascar should return to STOCK CARS again. Factory cars with only exhaust and safety modifications. Cheering on your favorite car, or a car you own yourself, makes the racing so much more exiting, I would actually watch instead of turn the channel if it were Mustangs, Challengers, Corvettes, and so on racing! You people who lived back then are so lucky!! You could go down to your dealer and order the same car. Want a Ford 427 like the one that won the race?? Sure....we will have it here in a week sir!! An interesting note about this race is that the storm that delayed the start of the race may also have decided it's outcome. That's because the first 10 laps were run under caution to help dry the track. When the 49 cars took the green flag on lap 11 (Curtis Crider's car didn't even make it that far), the race went caution-free the rest of the way, and because of that, Tiny Lund, driving for the Wood Brothers, was able to make the distance on one less pit stop than either Fred Lorenzen or Ned Jarrett, and coming out of the final turn, Lund ran out of gas, but had enough of a margin to coast to victory. Had it not rained before the start, Lund would have had to make that extra pit stop, and likely would not have won the race.

This race, which saw it's first 10 laps run under caution, the 1973 race, the first 13 laps of which were run under caution, and that 1979 race, when the first 15 laps were run under caution.

@@eugeneschulte4950 Chevy's 427 was a new design running in competition for the first time, no wonder they blew up. By 63 Ford's FE engine had 5 years of racing under it's belt so any weak points had already been addressed. The top qualify cars that year were all Chevys with the front row being determined by the outcome of the twin 125's. Too bad Chevy was forced by GM to pull the plug on their Nascar Gen2 BB program after the race. The rest of the decade would have been far more interesting with factory backing from Chevorlet.

You know what’s huge now.. vintage motor sports. Using period engines and drive lines, chassis and suspension but with modern tires, brakes, fuel systems and driver safety gear I believe they would have a huge hit that would eclipse the present offerings. Start with a certain era, say 59-64. Then if it flies another 65-71,2or even up to 77. It would fill the stands if it was handled right and the use of period correct cars, engines and drive lines was adhered to.
In yourehands its priceless then. I totally get it. Im pretty sure he wore the same helmet over and over until it cracked then wore the next one over and over again. Priceless...
Man those Ford 427 FEs were badass and as seen here they dominated up until Chrysler came out with the Hemi and even then the 427s wedge and tunnel port engines were winning almost half the races going up against Chrysler greatest engine but we all know what happened when Ford put overhead cams on the 427 bill france seen it run 1 time in a Galaxie and saw how stupid fast it was and knew it was going dominate the competition once again and just like that the Mighty Ford 427 Sohc A.K.A.the Cammer was banned a few years later the same thing happened to the Boss 429s and eventually the Chrysler Hemi cars!!! #Blue Oval Nation
Nascar made some missteps starting with the 63 Daytona 500. They never should have let Chevy run their Gen2 BB as it would not become a true production engine for another 2 years. By doing so, Chrysler ran back to the drawing board resulting in the introduction of the very limited production Gen2 Hemi. Afterwards, Ford responded with their SOHC 427 which never made it into very limited production due to Nascar banning it from competition, although some SHOC 427's were supplied to their factory backed drag racing teams. Nascar was all about racing modified production vehicles from the beginning, allowing single application (racing only) designs like the Gen2 Hemi to compete was a step in the wrong direction. Had Nascar allowed Ford's SOHC engine they knew Chrysler would have responded with their on version and it would probably have been a DOHC design.
Jerry Watson - Actually Ford & Merc won more races in the 1960s than any other manufacturer. Ford 196+ Merc 19 = 215; Dodge 67 + Ply 123 = 190 (Ford alone won 6 more); Chevy 53 + Pont 52 =105 for GM. Hemi and Boss9 where built for two tracks Daytona & Dega. Ford wedge heads and running the 427 bore with a 360 crank would turn 7k all day and never skip a beat with the lower piston speeds giving great reliability. Many vehicles showed HP on the hoods vs CID as a distraction. The SOHC would have never succeeded in Nascar - Prudhomme's quote about never needing an oil change because it blew all the oil out on every run. Even though Pink figured out the chain stretch and was able to compensate cam timing differences for drag racing, I don't believe the technology was available to make chains that would have lasted for 500 race miles. The few gear drive designs may have worked but we'll never know.
Real racing with real American iron and no damn restrictor plates. Plus raced with real gasoline not this cheaply made corn squeasins called fuel. Stuff like this will always be cool.
Interesting. Send all the cars out after the rain, let em run 10 laps, drop the green. In 2019 it takes 5 track dryers 1/2 hour to an hour to dry the track then several warmup laps for the cars... then green flag. Put some treads on those tires, get the cars out there racing, and let them decide when they want to pit for slicks. Hell, you call a mandatory yellow anyway a lot of times anyway.
Racing lost a ton of drivers and crew members in those days . Much safer and more competitive now . Too bad the safety features we have now weren't invented yet back then . I'm happy that drivers survive horrible crashes today and walk away .
TO All y'all old guys like me ,,,,,,,,,, remember having to get a new oil can dispenser with a Sharp punch because of the new paper cardboard can's so they don't collapse after you try to push it into the can. ??
Then France Family can't understand why NASCAR gates & TV ratings are way down. Fans don't want watch very same over funded race teams win all time. This was back when with talent, hard work, and not much money you stand a chance to win. Now you can't tow a car into the gate much less try to race. That what fans want. Local people who did good stories not huge corps winning every race.

There HAS to be a modern documentary movie about this. If I were directing it, I would call it "Flames of Glory".
This is the stock car racing I grew up with. Today's version I can do without. Can't relate to the cars or (most of) the drivers.

The top qualify cars that year were all Chevys with the front row being determined by the outcome of the twin 125's. Too bad Chevy was forced by GM to pull the plug on their Nascar Gen2 BB program after the race. The rest of the decade would have been far more interesting with factory backing from Chevorlet.

Lunds last race at Talladega in 75. Passed after going to intrack medical centre after a huge crash. Brave drivers in those days.

You know what’s huge now.. vintage motor sports. Using period engines and drive lines, chassis and suspension but with modern tires, brakes, fuel systems and driver safety gear I believe they would have a huge hit that would eclipse the present offerings. Start with a certain era, say 59-64. Then if it flies another 65-71,2or even up to 77.
It would fill the stands if it was handled right and the use of period correct cars, engines and drive lines was adhered to.

Man those Ford 427 FEs were badass and as seen here they dominated up until Chrysler came out with the Hemi and even then the 427s wedge and tunnel port engines were winning almost half the races going up against Chrysler greatest engine but we all know what happened when Ford put overhead cams on the 427 bill france seen it run 1 time in a Galaxie and saw how stupid fast it was and knew it was going dominate the competition once again and just like that the Mighty Ford 427 Sohc A.K.A.the Cammer was banned a few years later the same thing happened to the Boss 429s and eventually the Chrysler Hemi cars!!! #Blue Oval Nation

Nascar made some missteps starting with the 63 Daytona 500. They never should have let Chevy run their Gen2 BB as it would not become a true production engine for another 2 years. By doing so, Chrysler ran back to the drawing board resulting in the introduction of the very limited production Gen2 Hemi. Afterwards, Ford responded with their SOHC 427 which never made it into very limited production due to Nascar banning it from competition, although some SHOC 427's were supplied to their factory backed drag racing teams. Nascar was all about racing modified production vehicles from the beginning, allowing single application (racing only) designs like the Gen2 Hemi to compete was a step in the wrong direction. Had Nascar allowed Ford's SOHC engine they knew Chrysler would have responded with their on version and it would probably have been a DOHC design.
Jerry Watson - Actually Ford & Merc won more races in the 1960s than any other manufacturer. Ford 196+ Merc 19 = 215; Dodge 67 + Ply 123 = 190 (Ford alone won 6 more); Chevy 53 + Pont 52 =105 for GM. Hemi and Boss9 where built for two tracks Daytona & Dega. Ford wedge heads and running the 427 bore with a 360 crank would turn 7k all day and never skip a beat with the lower piston speeds giving great reliability. Many vehicles showed HP on the hoods vs CID as a distraction. The SOHC would have never succeeded in Nascar - Prudhomme's quote about never needing an oil change because it blew all the oil out on every run. Even though Pink figured out the chain stretch and was able to compensate cam timing differences for drag racing, I don't believe the technology was available to make chains that would have lasted for 500 race miles. The few gear drive designs may have worked but we'll never know.

Interesting. Send all the cars out after the rain, let em run 10 laps, drop the green. In 2019 it takes 5 track dryers 1/2 hour to an hour to dry the track then several warmup laps for the cars... then green flag.
Put some treads on those tires, get the cars out there racing, and let them decide when they want to pit for slicks. Hell, you call a mandatory yellow anyway a lot of times anyway.
Now they are120 lb men driving.

Racing lost a ton of drivers and crew members in those days . Much safer and more competitive now . Too bad the safety features we have now weren't invented yet back then . I'm happy that drivers survive horrible crashes today and walk away .

Then France Family can't understand why NASCAR gates & TV ratings are way down. Fans don't want watch very same over funded race teams win all time. This was back when with talent, hard work, and not much money you stand a chance to win. Now you can't tow a car into the gate much less try to race. That what fans want. Local people who did good stories not huge corps winning every race.
That was the year Tiny had a 25 foot, 1" fuel line...6 extra gallons.
No stoppages due to stages among many other things. When it was watchable.
