To be honest I removed the whole front axle to put the pan back on after a RMS, but glad I did that because one of the upper control arms was damaged and a bit compromised. My new full control arm set is supposed to be here Monday and I’m probably gonna do as much of the front that will keep the new bushings from premature wear due to being beat up by worn parts.
Awesome video, very well explained. One thing I figured needed to be mentioned is that my track bar mount has also been rewelded but not because it was once broken. Its because when you get the less expensive 4in lift, it uses the stock track bar and in order for that to work you need to cut a square out of the stock mount and weld in a filler piece so that you can retap a new hole about 1inch over to the right of the old one. I found out when I swapped a new axle in and it was impossible to get it to line up and be centered. Plus the old mount will not allow it to flex past what it would as stock because the track bar hits the top of the bracket
Admiral Off-Road oh great. It must of been done. I thought I saw the pan looked wet. Did mine last year and it's it's a lot of work. Thanks for the jeep videos, subscribed!
Great video! I used this as my primary reference to swap my own axle. Just one question, did your driveshaft bolts go in really hard? I started feeling a whole lot of resistance about 3/4 of the way in and am scared of driving them down in any further out of fear that I'll snap them
Great video! I'm about to do this exact swap this weekend. Can you please tell me what exactly you picked up for $50? Obviously the axle, but when I pull mine from the junkyard tomorrow what all should I pull for the swap to go without any problems? Also what are the best years to pull from?
great video it's funny you said the track bar mount axle side was welded "not your welds" I had to weld the same mount last week I guess it's not uncommon to snap between the steering damper and the track bar on the mount I stuck a 2 inch piece of 5/8 round to make up the space between the two so it's probably better re welded even if the welds aren't that pretty I would keep and eye on those welds as I'm sure you know already welds when they tear tend to tear on ether side of the weld the 5/8s round really helped beef it up its a poorly design mount anyway great video. oh yeah what was the reason you swapped the axle ? Chase 92 CHEROKEE L.I.N.Y.
I swapped because i had the rear axle re geared so I needed the front to match in order to use 4 wheel drive. I picked up the new axle for $50 and the High pinion is a little stronger than the low pinion. The jeep is also my daily driver so i was able to drop off the new axle at a shop to be re geared and was still able to drive the jeep around and swap the axle in a day instead of leaving the jeep at a shop and being without a vehicle for 3-4 days
I was a little nervous about them fighting me, but i soaked them in PB blaster for a few days prior to removing the axle and they came out pretty easily
yes I had the 4.88s in the rear with the 3.55s in front. I just kept the jeep in 2wd and it was fine. I also removed the front driveshaft just in case which is why i didn't include removing the driveshaft in the video.
99 XJ rotars can throw you off too ! There are two different ones. Metal and composite ! If I remember correctly, the composites were the latest toward end of the model year ? Also has two different bearing hub assemblies ! The short and tall hat deal ! I want to think the short hats go with the composite rotors, but having a senior moment here ? Just be aware of it with 99's !
Why didn't you just remove the pads and press the brake cylinder in with a C clamp... I do that myself.. it'll save you from having to bleed the brakes
You have 33s with 4.88 gears? How is that after a year? Around town I guess it is good, more power, but about taking a long drive? I like the idea of taller gears so I can pull a motorcycle trailer.
How much lift? I plan to trim enough fender for Bushwacker Flat Fender Flares. I thought I would need the Notch customs Flares to fit 35s. I'm trying to keep the Jeep as low as possible. I'm at 4" now. I can adjust up another 2" easily, but I would rather not. I want a Low COG.
Matthew Jenkins I have 4.10 gears with 33’s, not nearly enough. Over the years we installed 4.56 gears in the shop with 33’s, not enough. You really need 4.88’s. Remember if you try and compromise either the street or off road is going to suffer. I bought mine from a customer and use it for a lot of long distance trips so I opted to stay with 4.10’s. I don’t over tax or use my OD on the hills!
Question. I have to do the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. Is this what I need to do to get access to the pan, remove /drop the axle? If so mine is gonna be tougher. A lot more crusty than yours Any info is appreciated Manfred
if you are not lifted, there is a chance that the front axle can get in the way of removing the oil pan. If so, then yes the procedure is the same as in this video
Its a dana 30. Didn't you follow along at all? Another dumby asked the same question but the author told him the same thing, dana 30. You could've got your answer there as well.
so is it just a straight swap? the diff in my 2001 dana 30 low pinion is pretty much ruined. i have a high pinion dana 30 on my old 93 xj and thinking of swapping them.
Bro if I lift my Jeep myself from Ford F-150 shocks and leaf springs and everything do you think I need to take it somewhere to get it like geared and ratios and changed because I hear if you lift your Jeep that you have to change a lot more to the Jeep
you would want to regear when you change tire size. depending on how high you go with your lift, there might be more to it than just new shocks and springs (track bar, extended brake lines, steering, control arms, etc)
I did a rubicon axle swap and if I try mounting the sway bar where it is supposed to be from the factory it now hits the coils and there is no way for me to put it on. I guess I'll just have to relocate it
Woofer Cooker very similar, there will be some slight differences, because the wj has different knuckles and steering. But it does have a low pinnion axle and you can swap it just like this. But the axle is a little harder to find with the correct knuckles. If anything buy the high pinnion axle and swap ur pre-existing knuckles onto it. Make sure it fits your wj though before swapping!!! Just because it’s a Dana 30 doesn’t mean it will work. But they are very universal.
with only 35s, one tons would be way overkill. It came down to price and ease of swap. The brackets all line up and the axle width and lug pattern matches the rear. I got the axle for $50 and spare parts can be taken from the old axle and used on this one if necessary.
I just have a 99xj with almost the same set up than yours with 4.88! just a tip Im currently running adjustable short arms with drop brackets and the difference is just amazing driving on or off road! keep the good vidz!
Man you make this look so easy. I’m about to attempt an axle swap tomorrow, this video definitely helps. Thank you
Thanks and good luck!
Dude, at minute 7:58 your Jeep started, AND BACKFIRED!
Haha I thought I heard that too.
My fucking xj aw4 lunged at me when I was messing with the starter.
HE FARTS AT 7:58 GG MATE

I think something similar had been done to mine, but i have an adjustable track bar so I was able to line everything up
pro tip: ehen putting the calipers back on secure the rotor with 2 lug nuts
Put a couple lug nuts on rotor to hold it in place until you get the brake calipers on
Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Great video. Sure would of been a great time to swap that leaky oil pan and rear main however.
I don't really have any leaking issues but i agree that having the axle out of the way would make removing the oil pan much easier.
Admiral Off-Road oh great. It must of been done. I thought I saw the pan looked wet. Did mine last year and it's it's a lot of work. Thanks for the jeep videos, subscribed!
When you take the caliper off you can put a pair of vise grips on the brake line so that way you don’t lose so much brake fluid just so you know.
He should have just bought a C clamp to push piston back in.
Hey great video guy. Definitely gonna use this as a reference when I get around to swapping mine out. Cheers!
So you threw a dana 30 back in?
I use a caulk gun with the tube holder cut off and loosen the bleeder for calipers
I'll have to try that next time!
Go buy a “C” clamp so you can squeeze the caliper piston back in.
Fantastic video. Thank you
i love the chopped off D links bro hahah so awesome
Great video! I used this as my primary reference to swap my own axle. Just one question, did your driveshaft bolts go in really hard? I started feeling a whole lot of resistance about 3/4 of the way in and am scared of driving them down in any further out of fear that I'll snap them
Very good video young man keep it up bro
great video...thanks for making the time.
Thanks!
So what was the donor vehicle. What kind of axle I guess I missed it
Thanks dude
Excellent video
tghanx man this was very helpful I'm doing my zj

Big fan
I wonder how much would I pay for this at the garage.
Awesome vid, tyvm for the post.

Really need to invest in cordless power tools. otherwise great video...Cordless tools also make a great addition to trail tool box/bag.
Did you have to get an alignment after installing?
Those control arms bolt always give me a hard time
I was a little nervous about them fighting me, but i soaked them in PB blaster for a few days prior to removing the axle and they came out pretty easily
Did you torque everything down (control arms, track bar and steering) with wheels on the ground, or while it was still on jack stands?
Nice job! I swapped out mine after I bent a lower control arm bracket. Did you dd with different gears in both axles?
yes I had the 4.88s in the rear with the 3.55s in front. I just kept the jeep in 2wd and it was fine. I also removed the front driveshaft just in case which is why i didn't include removing the driveshaft in the video.
Should have removed the cover on the brake reservoir ! Albeit it did pop in the vise ? Otherwise you blew through this one, KUDOS 👍

the track bar mount hole is considerable amount smaller then the bushing. wouldn't that cause alot a of play?
there is a metal sleeve in the bushing
Why didn't you just remove the pads and press the brake cylinder in with a C clamp... I do that myself.. it'll save you from having to bleed the brakes
Hello,
Are there certain years that have high pinion?
You have 33s with 4.88 gears? How is that after a year? Around town I guess it is good, more power, but about taking a long drive? I like the idea of taller gears so I can pull a motorcycle trailer.
Matthew Jenkins I actually have 35s but I really like them with the 4.88s. Plenty of power around town and not super high rpms on the highway
I want a Low COG.
im at 4.5
Matthew Jenkins I have 4.10 gears with 33’s, not nearly enough. Over the years we installed 4.56 gears in the shop with 33’s, not enough. You really need 4.88’s. I'm gonna swap your front axle ;)
I can’t get my track bar to line up. I left everything loose and jacked it up but it’s not lining up😬😬😬😬
what is your setup? any lift? adjustable track bar?
Admiral Off-Road sorry just saw the reply, I got everything done haha. I was putting a 4 inch lift on while replacing the differential.
what about the sway bar
Quick disconnect links
7:57 what's that sound lol
lol i was sitting on a skateboard, that was the wheels sliding sideways across the floor
jajajajajaj
Was that a fart on 7:58?🙄
No lower spring clips?
Apparently I had l lost mine on that side. I made a new one but didn't include it in the video
Question. I have to do the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. Is this what I need to do to get access to the pan, remove /drop the axle?
If so mine is gonna be tougher. A lot more crusty than yours

if you are not lifted, there is a chance that the front axle can get in the way of removing the oil pan. If so, then yes the procedure is the same as in this video
It can be done without removing the axle. Jack stands on frame with full droop of suspension. Alot of finagling and be careful of that oil pump.
What jeep did the Dana 44 come off of ?
Its a dana 30. Didn't you follow along at all? Another dumby asked the same question but the author told him the same thing, dana 30. You could've got your answer there as well.
so is it just a straight swap? the diff in my 2001 dana 30 low pinion is pretty much ruined. i have a high pinion dana 30 on my old 93 xj and thinking of swapping them.
yep, its pretty easy
Bro if I lift my Jeep myself from Ford F-150 shocks and leaf springs and everything do you think I need to take it somewhere to get it like geared and ratios and changed because I hear if you lift your Jeep that you have to change a lot more to the Jeep
You would change gear ratios when you change tire size. My stock gear ratio was 3.55 I changed to 4.88 when I went to 35s.
you would want to regear when you change tire size. depending on how high you go with your lift, there might be more to it than just new shocks and springs (track bar, extended brake lines, steering, control arms, etc)
Did you have to make any adjustments to get your sway bar on? Mine hits the coils and I'm not sure what to do
I'm not running a sway bar but longer sway bar end links should help keep the sway bar from hitting the coils
I did a rubicon axle swap and if I try mounting the sway bar where it is supposed to be from the factory it now hits the coils and there is no way for me to put it on. I guess I'll just have to relocate it
Do you have to change the whole thing?
Only the left side on mine is broken
You can swap just the axle shaft if that is what is broken
@@AdmiralOffRoad Ok, but that is if it is 4x4 correct?
What axle do you have in the rear?
Chrysler 8.25
What did I swap the axel with from Dana 30 to what ??
It's another Dana 30. The one I took out was a low pinion Dana 30 with 3.55 gears. The one I swapped in is a high pinion Dana 30 with 4.88 gears
@@AdmiralOffRoad is it necessary for gears to match front and back?
@@PeraPeraEnglish yes that must be the same.
Would this be the same procedure as a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Woofer Cooker very similar, there will be some slight differences, because the wj has different knuckles and steering. But it does have a low pinnion axle and you can swap it just like this. But the axle is a little harder to find with the correct knuckles. If anything buy the high pinnion axle and swap ur pre-existing knuckles onto it. Make sure it fits your wj though before swapping!!! How much did you pay to have the diffs regeared?
about 1300-1400
Hey what vehicle is that Dana 44 from ?? Thanks
This is a Dana 30 out of an older xj
What year xj
Dude you didnt had to take it off you did that because you want it too... all you had to do either clamp it or buy a ratchet clamp the caliper down
why swap an inferior axle instead of a 1 ton or 3/4 ton?
with only 35s, one tons would be way overkill. It came down to price and ease of swap. The brackets all line up and the axle width and lug pattern matches the rear. I got the axle for $50 and spare parts can be taken from the old axle and used on this one if necessary.
Nice 👍
Why did you swap out the axel? Can you get a different lug diameter?
i was changing gear ratio
how much off lift do you run on your xj?
+keziell sotomayor 4.5 inches
I just have a 99xj with almost the same set up than yours with 4.88! just a tip Im currently running adjustable short arms with drop brackets and the difference is just amazing driving on or off road! keep the good vidz!
Admiral Off-Road are those stock lower control arms? How are you at 4.5 lift
yes they are. I have drop brackets
Admiral Off-Road okay. What brand are you running?
Have you ever heard of AIR Tools?
+greg a considering I used an air impact in this video, I'm going to go with yes?
do you keep the knuckles and ball joints from your old axle or do you use the ones with the new axle?
I used the ones already on the axle
when did you regear the rear?
back in February when I got the 35s and made the fender trim video
