Word of advice. You should NEVER ask a shop owner to check your ticket. Happened in Oldham, UK about 6 years ago. Old dear asked her newsagent to check her Euromillions ticket. She’d been shopping there for years. It was a £1 million Raffle Prize winner. He lied and said it hadn’t won. He then tried to claim it himself, the lotto people weren’t happy with his answers about the ticket. They knew the ticket had been bought at a supermarket using a bank card. They traced her that way. On CCTV. Gave her the mill. Gave the attempted fraudster 30 months in clink. Result. Oh and the newsagent had their lottery franchise taken away from them.
Do you not find it highly suspicious that the first case of UK lottery retailer fraud was discovered in 2011? That's 17 years after the UK National Lottery started. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation investigation revealed that $198 million had been claimed by lottery retailers, employees, and their families over a 13 year period. The Ontario Lottery had 10,300 lottery ticket sales locations at the time, the UK has over 44,000. Camelot don't even randomly test retailer integrity by using undercover operatives with marked winning tickets worth $20,000+ like they do in USA and Canada. There was a group of about six guys at a place I used to work at who were in a lottery syndicate. One guy was left to look after the ticket buying and did so for years until the day their lucky numbers came up. The prize was well into the millions and the guys celebrated and partied, committed to some big purchases and really lived it up. They ticket buyer guy seemed to be taking his time in cashing in the ticket and the other guys started asking questions. It seemed he forgot to buy the ticket that week, or that was his story anyway. They got pretty upset to say the least and questioned him about where he had been buying the tickets. He named the place and they weren't sure if he was telling the truth so they escorted him the the store and asked the store keeper if he recognized the guy and if he was a regular lotto ticket buyer. The store keeper said he'd never seen the guy before. They didn't kill the guy but they sure wanted to. Management had to relocate him to another part of the factory for his own safety. Not sure what the final outcome was with that but I think there's a lesson in it for anyone in a lottery syndicate.

I appreciate the fact that these lottery winners are still humble and down to earth. They deserve a comfortable life. Good things happens to people that are patient.
I gave my lottery ticket to a store owner to check (this was before the winning ticket scanner) and he never gave that ticket back to me. Shortly after, he sold his convenience stand. This was in Toronto at the CIBC building. I still wonder to this day...
If he stole your winnings then that money will be a curse to him and not a blessing, let 'em enjoy it for now, the money they steal will always bring misery to them.
I watched this story when it first aired few years back. I must be honest. It brought tears to my eyes. Of course it was a tears of happiness. Because in in the end right people got what they rightfully deserved. Things like this only happens once in a life time. Sometimes it may happens more than once. However, happy happy for them all.
Anyone who goes public with ANY Lottery Win is insane. Although I believe it's compulsory in North America? In Australia you can remain completely anonymous if you so wish.
Brandon Quatro So true! It's insane! People get killed for winning! And suddenly one has many new 'friends' and relatives asking for and even demanding a piece of the pie!
Brandon Quatro Um, you do know North America is made up of like 23 countries, right? Are you saying you believe all these countries have a lotto like this and that it is mandatory for winners in all of them to identify themselves? I can only speak for America. Here, you can claim winnings anonymously. That's why winners in America who aren't total morons hire an attorney immediately.
Hey Brandon ik ur frm Australia so u may not know this but North America covers 3 large countries. It is possible for the 3 nations to have the same laws but there is no such thing as a North American law so it cannot be cumpulsor across North America as a law unless the 3 natioms just so happen to adopt said law. Furthermor in the United States whether or not a lottery winner can remain anonymous is decided by whatever state you live in. In some states a lottery winner can remain anonymous while in other states the state laws prohibit it.
should adopt the norwegian lotto system you can only play lotto,if you have registered with your social security number and bank account then you recieve a lotto card, you can only buy a ticket using this card and then every time you have won, the money goes automatically into your bank account dont have to worry about lost or stolen tickets and if you win the main prize you will recieve a phone call, also for amounts over 10.000kr they will call you.
Canada is awesome and honest. Here in america that lady would have got 40 years and there would be no investigation into who really won the money. No freakin way they would have paid out twice. I wanna move to Canada, eh?
Virtuitous Vampire - which country are you from? Here in the U.S. we absolutely pay taxes on winnings (I think upwards of 40% if you take the lump sum)
This is seriously the best 'light current affairs' good news story I've ever watched. I hope that pair of geniuses who came up with that method of finding those guys know they are absolute heroes. And those responsible for discerning that the NewsAgent's family ran a scam also deserve great credit. I also hope the lad's decided to pool some of their millions together and since they're already in the field, start a serious big construction company or something akin together, $1.8 million each is enough to be secure for life, but if all or some of them put some of their money in together to start say a 3-6 million construction start up company they will see that money returned to them many times over during the remainder of their lives. It's so important to intelligently reinvest your money not just get caught up buying high deterioration items like cars, boats, watches, jewellery, etc.
It's amazing how Dan's dying Sister had that premonition. Good Luck to these Guys. But hey I wouldn't want to go back to work after winning so much money. Maybe it keeps some normality in their lives.
Years ago my Dad checked a ticket (at home) and it won $20. He later went to a kiosk and gave it to a East Indian lady to check the ticket. She said it was loser and tossed it. My Dad said no it’s not, she laughed and said she was joking. If I had my time back I would have had my Dad report her, it was obviously a scam!!
This is why I always check my tickets online first. Then validate them before handing it to the clerk. Years ago I use to play the $7 649 combination when it was a buck. Once I had 3 numbers so I knew I won $40 and when I handed it to the clerk he said I won $10 and I called him a thief and a liar right there because I knew I won $40. I rarely play those big lotteries 649/ lotomax now because there is no money in the smaller prizes. Take Lottario for example, get 4 of 6 you win $10, get 2 and bonus # you win zilch, bonus # only you win a free play. I think the lottery corp is losing sales on those big lotteries because there only seems to be a 649 winner once or twice a month now. Check out David Menzies' video at Rebel Media and his hassle about claiming just over a one grand prize.
In the States for sometime now, the moment you buy any ticket and say it turns-out to be a big winner: the lottery headquarters of that state can pull-up the video from the location you bought that ticket. So when you show-up to claim your payday they can reveal same date/time when ticket was purchased and "look" at who's standing there. Mystery solved!
@@gibsonsg6201 Then, you'd both show up to claim the prize. But if you were in a Casino and you're taking turns on say, a progressive slot: and it's her turn, hits the jackpot. Then Casinos by their rule will pay the person who played the machine last, even if it is your money you both gambled with! www.miamiherald.com/news/local/article142963604.html
I think everyone missed the part that the original ticket didn’t win money, it won a free quick pick ticket. so if he had signed the original it wouldn’t have mattered because that one didn’t have the winning numbers on it. The store keep the first ticket and days later scanned it and got the ticket with the free quick pick. that free ticket was the ticket with the winning numbers. The guy had no idea that he won a extra ticket with the free quick pick.
they were sentenced prison time in september, appealled their case and the judge granted them bail while they wait on their appeal. The money was sent to North Korea years ago. They have since left Canada to avoid prison. The OLG needs to just charge it to the game. When you give the wrong person the money, it's gone.
What a great story- I love the twist where a woman in a coma comes out to deliver a message to her brother- how cool! So much love to the men who won this- I wish them all the joy this world can give! ( I also hope they invest wisely and not blow it like that Chung woman😂)
A CIVIL lawsuit? Not sure how Canadian law works but us neighbors down south don't take well to these things....criminal charges for sure. They should all be locked up.
Canada is a laughing stock lol . It is all controlled ,I been there for 27 years play a lot never ever that I wins. I Went to Europe last year play one game I have 5 numbers
jpratx Lolololololol so funny!! How’s all that ‘locking up’ working for you guys ‘down south’? I wouldn’t change places with you for 12 million. God help you guys though...you’re a laughing stock now.

The US is a joke.
It was 17 years ago. Not every store would have had it. Plus, they different realize there was a problem until after the family collected, and older-style cameras usually got recorded over every 24-48 hours.
Im so happy for these guys. In the past its so easy for the ticket seller to deceive the customer because when you go to check your ticket there was no machine to check it yourself unless you look through all this set of numbers of winning ticket but when you want to buy an other ticket you just hand it to the person to check it for you. I think thats what happened to me but I didnt know you can call OLG if you're suspicious about it. Thanks to the show, now I will report it. Its less than $100,000 but I want to report it even I don't get the money anymore. I just need to them to know.
I went and had a ticket checked, the machine said exceeds payout limit the guy said the machine was broke, and handed me $5.00. a few months later I saw a winning amount of $300,000. plus can't remember exact amount. But then I knew I had been scamed.

As much as we hate them for scamming the system I appreciate knowing they found a method of winning & it proves the lotterty is nothing more than a scam
Update: September 5, 2018 Ontario Superior Court Justice Douglas Gray sentenced Jun-Chul Chung, the patriarch of the family to seven years in prison, his 36-year-old daughter Kathleen Chung to four years and his son Kenneth to 10 months as the judge found he didn’t play a role in the winning ticket scam.
Very cool story and they seem mature enough to be realistic about how far 2 million will go. Hopefully, they will benefit from the win for the rest of their lives. They seem like great guys.
OLG coming out as the good guys here! How can you determine a persons buying habits where there is no ID or personal info used when buying tickets? They took 7 years to find the 'winners' how did the 'winners' remember their purchase of 7 years back? No proof is provided that this analyzing machine works or that the 'winners 'actually won!

i also caught my chinese conveniance store near me tried to rip me off, getting short before payday, knowing the ticket i had was worth just over 100 dollars would get me through to payday, so went to cash it in and the pos told me not winning ticket, but i demanded the ticket back and took it the following week to the lotto office, they confirmed it was a winner of 197 dollars which i collected from them and told them about this store, after a few months i seen when i attended the store that all their lotto machines were gone, so they must have been doing a long time, now with self check they cant rip you off, because as soon as you run it in the check out it is registered as where the ticket is checked, and if the lotto co, doesnt get a validation from that store then they know the person didnt cash it out there, and since then i have always had free plays or some kind of win 2 dollars, 10 dollars small amounts but still more then i have ever had in all the yrs i have played and still do
Same thing happened to me once, I knew my ticket was $50 winner. The clerk said "not a winner" and I called him a liar, so he started yelling at me in arabic to get out of his store, his coworker came out of the back room, handed me back my ticket and told me to never come back there like I was the criminal!
I always ask for my ticket back after it’s checked, I worked in Bowral NSW Australia years ago where a family owned newsagent/lottery shop was caught holding on to winning tickets, the pretended to scan them then crumple and throw in a bin....only to retrieve them once the customer left. They were Asian also.
Even though this comment is a year old, I thought I would answer for anybody else wondering. All 3 Chungs were found guilty of fraud. The store owner, Ken Chung received a 10 month sentence (the judge couldn’t prove he was involved in the $12.5 million scam). His father, Jun-Chul and sister Kathleen (who were involved in the $12.5 million) received 7 years and 4 years respectively. "And they’ll be back in court next month as the judge hears arguments about restitution and forfeiture. Court heard the attorney general has already seized about $8 million from the family and is seeking a total of $14.85 million - the $12.5 million plus interest that the OLG had to pay out to the true winners in 2011" From the link provided by Mass.Shadows
Happened here in Australia. Two youngish girls won, Malaysian or Korean national in Australia on visa stole their ticket, claimed the money and took off. Luckily (from memory) the girls had taken a photo of themselves with their winning ticket.
What.a great story and a great bunch of guys The man that did the work genuine happiness for helping them get the money made me cry. I hope you received something.
This happened to me: Winnipeg, the Bay downtown on Vaughn street...I lived in a little apartment across the street...the Basement Grocery Store in the Bay I would get my groceries all the time, about 06, or 07 or so...I gave my ticket to the clerk, she had blond hair. She checked my ticket, and fast as lightning threw it under the counter and said it wasn't a winner. I said 'wait, let me see it!!' and she said, 'what! you think its a winner??!!' I asked for the box under the counter where she threw all the tickets into, and she gave me the box (which I THOUGHT at the time, she threw it into the box, but probably had a little shelf she threw it onto instead as mine wasn't there in the box full of tickets, as I had been playing the same numbers for about 3 or 4 years by that time. I told her it wasn't there and then she said 'I put them all In there, in the box.' there was a lineup and she said 'move on, I'm working.' 2 weeks later she was gone from that kiosk and a month or so later was a big sign up in the Bay window saying the Bay lotto had sold a big winning ticket there...it was under a million, I think, but about 5 or 600,000.00 if I remember correctly. To this day, I always think that I was scammed by her.
Tboz Baliol you NEED to contact the lottery service ASAP. You have more than enough info to get them to at least investigate, especially since you know your numbers!!!
I like the Canadian lotteries. They don’t tax your winnings. If you win $2 million it’s $2 million. The US lotteries falsely advertise jackpot amounts. Great to see average joes do well.
sfneurosurgeon It is more like they take their cut before they announce the prize. And you just ignore how inept this OLG Canadian lottery division is when they allowed people to steal other people’s winnings.
Obviously couldn’t have happened to a better group of guys. And I adore the lottery investigator that geared up while recalling the moment the guys got their giant checks.
Good investigators! You made my day, even if I could only dream of it. I am overwhelmingly happy for those man. Spend it wisely. Treat your kids and wives nice. Make good use of it, donate to something where people are also blessed. So happy for you. It makes my heart smile for you all.😊😘🐥😂
On more than one occasion, I've had Asian shopkeepers not bother to give me my validation slip, and when I call them out on it they have the nerve to argue about it, at which point I inform them they could lose their lottery terminal if they DON'T comply with my request. Check your ticket against an online lotto winning numbers website and validate it using an in-store scanner before EVER trusting any clerk.
This couldn’t happen to 7 nicer guys. They are humble and haven’t changed a thing. They helped out their families and kept their jobs. Thanks to his dying sister. My faith has been restored. ❤️🙏🏻😇.
About 20 years ago my sister lived right behind a mall in Barrie, Ontario. She use to buy her tickets in the mall. This one time i was visiting her and we were in the mall. She went to check her tickets at the mall kiosk. As she had them scan it, the machine made the noise it does when you win something. I said congrats, what did you win. She said what do you mean? I said you won something. She said how do you know? I said it plays music when you win. She said its played music before but the staff including the owner Never said anything to her. She inly won a k IU ttke this time but was visibly upset at what she may had win in the past.

I gave my lottery ticket to a store owner to check (this was before the winning ticket scanner) and he never gave that ticket back to me. Shortly after, he sold his convenience stand. This was in Toronto at the CIBC building. I still wonder to this day...

Thats really shaddy. Seems like did rip u off but you never know
That sucks, but if they did steal a winning ticket from you, karma has no concept of time. they'll get what's coming to them
If he stole your winnings then that money will be a curse to him and not a blessing, let 'em enjoy it for now, the money they steal will always bring misery to them.
No time limit on robbery check it out get a p i if you win your money give me a shout hope its you

I watched this story when it first aired few years back. I must be honest. It brought tears to my eyes. Of course it was a tears of happiness. Because in in the end right people got what they rightfully deserved. Things like this only happens once in a life time. Sometimes it may happens more than once. However, happy happy for them all.
In Australia, we can register our tickets. And also stay anonymous if we win.
In Canada you can not stay anonymous.
Anyone can remain anonymous if the winning ticket is claimed by a trust.
Brandon Quatro
Um, you do know North America is made up of like 23 countries, right?

Brilliant! But we lack that :-/
That doesn't sound as fun, I assume. And it's pretty complicated. Would people agree to it?
Canada is awesome and honest. Here in america that lady would have got 40 years and there would be no investigation into who really won the money. No freakin way they would have paid out twice. I wanna move to Canada, eh?
christian yates plus you pay taxes on winnings, we don’t.
Its really beautiful down here. The systems not meant too fail. You should consider it
Virtuitous Vampire - which country are you from? Here in the U.S. we absolutely pay taxes on winnings (I think upwards of 40% if you take the lump sum)

You want to move to Canada because of this story? Wow, you are freaking stupid. Please, GO!
Man. You bruised a lot of delicate egos...
I love that they paid the guys the interest on the years they didn't get their Winnings :)
@kgbme Lottery always pay in installments.

The Koreans who stole the cash got 4 - 7 years in jail! The lady got 4 years.

Wow, it is so whelming to know that lottery company has so much technology to track the right winner..nice video..

Humble? Guys who win the lottery, tell everyone, and then go around on the news and TV shows? Yeah, really "humble".
@@NoName-np8ko You clearly don't know what the word humble means.
This is the way it's supposed to be. Very Happy for these families. a true feel good story.
They should be thrown in jail and assest liquidated to repay the debt
In the States for sometime now, the moment you buy any ticket and say it turns-out to be a big winner: the lottery headquarters of that state can pull-up the video from the location you bought that ticket. So when you show-up to claim your payday they can reveal same date/time when ticket was purchased and "look" at who's standing there.
Mystery solved!
What if your wife bought the tickets and you weren’t in the video?
@@gibsonsg6201 Then, you'd both show up to claim the prize. But if you were in a Casino and you're taking turns on say, a progressive slot: and it's her turn, hits the jackpot. Then Casinos by their rule will pay the person who played the machine last, even if it is your money you both gambled with! www.miamiherald.com/news/local/article142963604.html
Couldn't have happened to a better bunch of guys! Great story.
Check your tickets yourself and keep the receipt of purchase ......purchase at same store .print then ...sign your tickets
I think you missed the whole point of the show...you don't have to be paranoid any more Joe.
@@Veggamattic actually Joe is right. how hard is it to check your own ticket.
Also the lottery states you should immediately sign your tickets.
Seems like a good group of down to earth guys.
They even got the interest for the lost years
What a great story. Thanks for the upload.
Wow congrats to all and to the guy for inventing the DART system to track the tickets...Thats awesome
they were sentenced prison time in september, appealled their case and the judge granted them bail while they wait on their appeal. The money was sent to North Korea years ago. They have since left Canada to avoid prison. The OLG needs to just charge it to the game. When you give the wrong person the money, it's gone.

Did you get the money??

I went and had a ticket checked, the machine said exceeds payout limit the guy said the machine was broke, and handed me $5.00. a few months later I saw a winning amount of $300,000. plus can't remember exact amount. But then I knew I had been scamed.
As much as we hate them for scamming the system I appreciate knowing they found a method of winning & it proves the lotterty is nothing more than a scam

OLG coming out as the good guys here! How can you determine a persons buying habits where there is no ID or personal info used when buying tickets? Do you even know what "racist" means? It means believing a race is superior based on genetics. Please explain how his comment means he believes Asians are inferior because of their genetics. I find that 99% of people who accuse others of "racism" don't even know what the word means.
@T Y Not really. It is actually very true. They should have known better but they were too greedy.
@@NoName-np8ko Modern racism would rather be defined as: "a set of social relations that is used to discriminate against people based on their assumed race . i also caught my chinese conveniance store near me tried to rip me off, getting short before payday, knowing the ticket i had was worth just over 100 dollars would get me through to payday, so went to cash it in and the pos told me not winning ticket, but i demanded the ticket back and took it the following week to the lotto office, they confirmed it was a winner of 197 dollars which i collected from them and told them about this store, after a few months i seen when i attended the store that all their lotto machines were gone, so they must have been doing a long time, now with self check they cant rip you off, because as soon as you run it in the check out it is registered as where the ticket is checked, and if the lotto co, doesnt get a validation from that store then they know the person didnt cash it out there, and since then i have always had free plays or some kind of win 2 dollars, 10 dollars small amounts but still more then i have ever had in all the yrs i have played and still do
Same thing happened to me once, I knew my ticket was $50 winner.

So did the Chun's get convicted?
Even though this comment is a year old, I thought I would answer for anybody else wondering. All 3 Chungs were found guilty of fraud. The store owner, Ken Chung received a 10 month sentence (the judge couldn’t prove he was involved in the $12.5 million scam). His father, Jun-Chul and sister Kathleen (who were involved in the $12.5 million) received 7 years and 4 years respectively.
