David E. Hofmans (January 27, 1943 - July 3, 2024) was an American trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he had a remarkable career in horse racing. Hofmans achieved several notable milestones, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.
1996 Breeders’ Cup Classic: Hofmans trained Alphabet Soup, who pulled off a stunning 19-1 upset victory in the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Classic at Woodbine.
1997 Belmont Stakes: His trainee, Touch Gold, won the Belmont Stakes, securing a place in racing history.
Other Accomplishments: Throughout his career, Hofmans consistently performed well in Southern California racing circuits, leaving a legacy of excellence.

Dave was my favorite person on the backstretch, hands down. Never met a gentleman like him and his love for his horses was obvious. I will miss him.

Sadly, he took his own life. I am so sad. I worked for him in the early 1970s. He was such a great person to be around. He worked for Farrell Jones when I met him, and we both ended up working for the great Bobby Frankel. David was a joy to be around and he never got mad and hollered at anybody , even if we made a mistake. His son is a trainer in Kentucky I believe.
