  • Ghostzapper had one thing going for him Saturday in the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic: He is a very fast horse. But he had never run a mile and a quarter, his trainer was a miserable 2 for 62 in the Breeders' Cup and he was supposed to be caught up in a speed duel that would threaten his chances.
Sometimes, though, this game can be simple. Ghostzapper, a 4-year-old who had not been beaten this year and who had posted incredibly fast speed figures, outran 12 others every step of the way in the Classic. Ghostzapper did it the easy way, going to the front and never trailing, winning by three lengths over Roses in May in record time before 53,717 fans at Lone Star Park.
"He's just faster than they are," Bobby Frankel, Ghostzapper's trainer, said.

I witnessed every TC Winner going back except Citation. I personally saw Kelso run just knee high to my father and I was hooked. Cigar, Fager who I watched in stunning awe. The "MONSTER" Secretariat the Great in the Preakness the fastest move from last to first ever seen and the jaw dropping Belmont all under a hand ride. John Henry at his advanced age. There have been so many truly great horses I could fill this page, some many not have ever heard, their careers cut short. Hoist the Flag who I watched from the rail in a 5f workout at Aqueduct. Jean Cruget the jock of Seattle Slew said in 2011 that HTF was the greatest animal he ever mounted hands down and never again. I believed then that I was watching an amazing animal and HTF was the most impressive 2yr.old I had ever seen. Undefeated and breaks down. I cheered hard for them all for they all deserved it. This Ghostzapper was a unique animal in that a "sprinter" could collect and break track records at every distance to 1/1/4 M. Secretariat, well he is another story from another planet but this Ghostzapper was the "fastest" animal to lay them down @ 6f to 11/4.. How would he have a fared against the "MONSTER"? I would have loved to see it with each horse getting the perfect trip, Castallano going to that whip time and again and Ghostzapper responding while Turcotte letting the "Monster" out a notch with a pocketful of never ending notches.

+fireworm678 One of my favourite horses and would like to see him take on AP over 10f. In his last 4f he closed in an impressive 47.70s. This as a peak 4.5y.o., with a rails run on a relatively fast track.
Big Red as a just turned 3 y.o. closed 10f in 46.40s, running wide on a slower track. The difference between very, very, good and greatest.

+Ecky Thimble I wrote the following on another Secretariat video. With the Belmont Stakes sandwiched in between, Secretariat, starting with the Kentucky Derby proceeded to deliver the most devastating series of six consecutive Grade 1 stakes triumphs ever witnessed at North American race tracks. His last three performances were against the best older horses that dared to face him, open to one and all, in the world. His last two being at 1 1/2 miles and 1 5/8 miles on turf in which he decimated the fields by 12 lengths with times respectively of 2:24.4/5 and 2:41.4/5 Secretariat's Belmont stakes triumph simply put was the single greatest racing performance yet delivered in the history of Thoroughbred racing. His like will not be seen again! Good day!

Interesting side note is that Ghostzapper has a horse in his pedigree that I had never heard of before: Hawaii. He's in his dam line. He was a South African horse with a record of 28 starts, 21 wins, 2 place, and 3 shows. Though he raced primarily in South Africa, he did race some in the U. S. and won 1969 American Champion Turf Horse award. He won 2 turf races at a 1 1/2, the Man O'War where he set a track record and The Stars and Stripes Handicap. He was inducted into the Aiken Thoroughbred Hall of Fame in 1977. In South Africa he was the 2 y/o and 3 y/o champion. Ghostzapper is in Justify's dam line, but Hawaii is also in his sire line via a different mare that came down to Scat Daddy via his sire.

Who could make up this much ground so quickly in a gallop hand ride in a grade 1? This BC race was stacked with some brilliant runners just waiting while Roses in May was supposedly doing his job. ***** That is absurd. Secretariat did not get to race at 4 and could have beaten this group by open lengths even as a three year old. He set comparable times on much deeper East Coast tracks. Spectacular Bid would have done better as well. As for Zenyatta, she would not have caught a horse with an easy lead and would have had to go even wider on the far turn as it was wall to wall horses all the way out to the eight or nine path, even wider than the best horse in the race Pleasantly Perfect.

Vernon France Secretariat had one outlier race (Belmont) and several great efforts; but not quite like the 6-race run Ghostzapper had to end his career. I can see why the speed rating agencies rate him so highly.
Zenyatta would not have had a prayer spotting Ghostzapper 10 lengths at the top of the stretch.

The name of the game is not to have the fastest horses in fractions but the FIRST horse to the wire. All the speed in the world only matters where you spend and who you can spend it against on the track. Secretariat spent his at the wire and his times followed him. Ghostzapper had incredible SPEED but Secretariat had Pegasus powers getting to the wire. DNA test shows that Ghostzapper was
      indeed a horse.
      Secretariat? Still to be determined.

@@silvereyedstacker1842 We never seen Secretariat go full out under a urging whip. He was hand ridden in all his races without being pushed. Ghostzapper put up 128 Beyers and was the fastest horse I had ever seen at classic distances but did need to be urged on occasion. Who knows if Secretariat had to be urged what his fractions may be. Like I said its not the fastest horse that wins its the horse that hits the wire first. I love this Ghostzapper and would put him in any horses class that ever lived. Being pushed by a rabbit and being pushed by a MONSTER who gains power as the race develops are two different things. Red could wear down a mountain with speed fractions and finish fresh no matter the distance. Still the Ghost gives me chills when I watch him run and does remind me of the Good Doctor. I wish they were all still here in competition. Now that would be equine heaven.

Arguably the greatest Breeders Cup performance ever. The chart incorrectly states 3 lengths whereas this was clearly around 4.5. As noted below, the fractions were Secretariat-like. I remember his win a year earlier in the then 7 furlong Vosburgh when he came out of the clouds to win by 6.5 lengths. He should really have been given consideration as one of at least the ten best of all time in North America.

Incitatus I really don't think the two can be compared. AP beat a steady diet of plodders and middle movers and I don't know how good he was. In the one race where they put the wood to him, he struggled. There could have been other circumstances that lead to this but I doubt it. When a horse loses and people talk about the horse being tired, I don't buy it. Top trainers don't run tired top horses. Ghostzapper beat some monsters. All of this is just my opinion and is based on watching tens of thousands of races over the years, but it is an opinion and could be because I dislike both owner and trainer. My guess is that Ghostzapper would blow his doors off and Formal Gold would do the same. I would say the same thing in a match race. The other way to beat him would have been to soften him up with a gunner and run him down with a late runner. Two horses would have been required because his tactical speed is what made him the horse he was. He caught a year with little speed and a few horses dropped out of the Classic. He was a very good horse and beat what they threw at him, but I don't see him in the top 50. Again, just an opinion.

+bg147 In my lifetime I've never seen a dirt horse move the way Z did. He wasn't the soundest horse but on his best day from a mile to 10f on dirt I truly think only Dr. Fager could have ever kept up with him. One thing AmPh did show was that he was a very strong galloper who could carry his high cruising speed over 12f when loose on the lead, and I have doubts as to whether Z could maintain his speed over that distance. AmPh was a very good horse but he benefited from weak competition and no early speed to pressure him. You just can't let a horse of that caliber run 2nd quarters in 24 and change, they're never coming back from that.

@@DanielSong39 Durability is nice, but its also extremely overrated in terms of the GOAT conversation, especially as times go by and standout horses at three are almost never brought back because of risk of injury. Flightline raced one year, and almost EVERY horse racing expert, has put him amongst the greatest ever, and rightfully so.
That aside, im talking about Ghostzapper being amongst the greatest of all times in terms of PURE SPEED. The horse has two of the top 15 Beyer speed figures since the mid 70s, with TENS OF THOUSANDS having raced during that time. He was milliseconds from breaking track records from 7 furlongs, to a a mile and an eighth, which is something extremely rare for any horse to be able to say, and to this day, with ALL the insanely great horses that ran in or won the BC Classic, since 1984, Ghostzapper holds the all time record for fastest time in the 38 years the race has been won.
Ghostzapper was NASTY, and on his best day, he could run with ANYONE in history. Over and over his times prove that. Who cares if he only ran 11 times? In terms of speed and consistency, he ABSOLUTELY should be in the GOAT convo, just as Flightline should and will be.
