  • Sadhguru distinguishes between pathological illness and the “fringe” madness that everyone has. He speaks of how many of us push ourselves into depressive states but also come out it with help.

I can honestly admit that I drove myself into depression, and it took courage to admit that, but it was my first step in getting out of depression, and learning how to live happily. Thank you Sadhguru! I, and solely I, can direct and am responsible for what happens inside of me.

I agree with what he is saying. He's not saying what's happened to you to make you depressed is your fault, but he is saying if you don't wake up and realize you're in a mess, then you can't fix it.... totally agree with that

Soo True sadhguru..!!! That "our physical and mental health is our fundamental responsibility. We have to take charge of both at an early age." If this one thing sinks in our heads...most of them will Never choose to be depressed.
They will use that situation as a fuel to grow in Life.
Thank you Sadhguru for guiding us in every aspect of life🙏

Actually by understanding and accepting that things do not always go the way you want can make you more relaxed and at ease. Also to understand that depression is not permanent and not trying to get rid of the depressed state when it happens, Simply see it as impermanent and not self can really make a difference in your life.

In simple words, One is responsible for the choices in life and life itself. It doesn't mean we dismiss the misery and sadness or depression, but if we don't take control of ourselves and our life, then that's our choice as well..

I absolutely agree! You are in control of how you think and also how you respond to thoughts. If you choose to be depressed it’s because you are trying to force something your way! The natural flow of life does not require force therefore depression would not even be a issue

It is interesting to hear it practically spoken, instead of as an existential shame. Sadness will happen and sometimes we push ourselves over the line and into depression, but if we are patient it will pass. Maybe we sleep some of it off, maybe we write, maybe we get physical exercise, etc. Sometimes it is healthy to pull ourselves out of bed, away from trying to analyze every trauma and "fix it", or push our bodies to their limits, and we just try to be present in this life. We breathe, we watch the animals live their day, we enjoy some tea, and we simply exist and let the feelings pass through their process, rather than fighting ourselves. It's going to happen and sometimes we develop habits that keep us from being present, and instead push us further from sadness and into depression, and that is ok. Let yourself be and remember that you are not your body, you are it's guide, and you may respect the experience your body is going through and comfort it through care.

Another person who wrote in depth into the aspects of ego, pain and depression is Eckhart Tolle. We're fortunate that we get all this understanding so easily now. The mind incessantly thinks thousands of thoughts and emotions a day, most of it repetitive and negative. That itself is in fact a disease, because thinking is using us rather than the other way around. The mind cannot be at ease. Just asking people to simply sit and do nothing except eat, exercise, sleep and stay silent for just 2 days is enough to make most people crazy - that lack of ease is indeed disease. I know, I'm trying.
That girl, by saying that "I'm entitled to my sadness", is investing too much into her emotion - and that's the very mistake Sadhguru talks about. It is only this when it goes so deep that it actually imprints on your brain and genetic structure that it becomes pathological. They differ only in degree.
Many people who are clinically depressed have had a history of negative thought patterns for many years before their minds make it permanent. In fact most of our insanity is simply hidden by the dense physical body even in apparently 'normal' people.
As Sri Yukteshwar Giri put it "Observe you thoughts unremittingly for a period of 24 hours, and then wonder no longer at the absence of God".

this is my opinion. i was always tought that anger is a choice. Also saying MY SICKNESS being whatever it possibly could be. MY EMOTION(sadness, anger, depression, rage) means youve already accepted it as part of you. my cold my cancer. youre taking it and owning it as apart of you already and thats it. so it better to say THE cancer, cold, sadness. etc. like its alone. rather then saying MINE and owning it or taking it upon yourself inside. and it becomes your identity. and pretty much you try to protect it after awhile. Entitled to it. so how do you deal wth something you think is a finger, tooth, nose etc. detach or torn. it hurts and is painful and it becomes a void once its gone. you start missing it. and thus begins the cycle. its not the problem thats the problem its the way YOU look at the problem thaat is the problem. what are we gonna replace the void with? negative or positive? right?

Given these harmful views, it is imperative to reconsider following and listening to someone who perpetuates such dangerous misinformation. A leader who lacks understanding and compassion for mental health issues poses a significant risk to the well-being of their followers. Instead, seek out leaders and sources that provide accurate, supportive, and empathetic guidance. Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, and it deserves to be addressed with the utmost care and respect. Following someone who does not acknowledge this can lead to further harm and hinder the path to healing and recovery for those in need.

    Namaskaram Sadhguru,
I completely agree and realise your words.
But I don't agree that depression is a choice for people in their childhood. This is because a child neither understand spirituality(which they have without any vocabulary) nor can ignore the pain to acquire materialisitic things around them either by themselves or emotionally. So depression does not become a choice for them. I have been suffering from it unknowingly from my childhood and the stigma, financial pressure, conceptual skill development and age timeline made it more worse day by day.

break it down to its simplest form; take some time to consider, depression is only a deeper state of sadness, and sadness is the same as anger. as both are derived from us not getting our way. still like children throwing a tantrum as they didn't get what they wanted.
if one wants to know themselves, they first need to know their Father. we are a Spiritual being and all is of the Spirit. we are emotional creatures who let themselves be ruled by their desires. it is our very own desires that destroy us, for we are like children who have yet learned how things work. we have control over it if we can understand what is going on.

@@amireghbal9892 Wrong. Everyone can & HAS become depressed at one time or another. Everyone knows the world has problems BUT in actuality we are as an entire species far better off than ever in history, please see this. It's only a consequence of our ego that we could ever think highly of ourselves for carelessly overdramatising the faults of society & senselessly burdening the self with those problems. Don't seperate your own suffering from others, like a trophy that you won. Life is suffering for all, even the rich are not happy. Don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution! I was a very anxious child and now I have high anxiety towards life. My family immigrated to Germany and were treated very badly, so my parents thaught me to be very careful, not to trust anyone etc. So now I am taking Prozac. Sadhguru has helped me a lot, I do his meditations and they changed me. Now I am thinking about tapering the medication off. But I am thinking tomyself, If I am born as a very shy and anxious human, is it me who drove myself into that?-as like some people drive themselfes into depression as sadhguru says. Or if I am born like that, maybe I am like those cases which are born depressed, so I dont know wether I should taper them off.

Medication will not cure your shyness, exposure will.
Meds can work for a bit but not for long time .
      I took medication for 6 years .
After knowing that my thoughts need to be changed I came out of it .
A book called: “feeling good “by Dr David Burns will help you come out of depression.

There is something that sadhguru have mentioned in other video as 'identifying' with self concept. By removing the associating identity to the narrative we create, and view it as it is. No right and no wrong. At the balance range. It takes alot of inner work cultivation to reach this lvl. I have not reach there yet.
May you be able to find strength and courage to identify your thoughts and emotions when they arises and watch them. Let them be with no judgment. Namaste

Very VERY few people have legitimate chemical imbalances that require medication to fix. Things like bipolar, schizophrenia, borderline, etc. are extremely rare. And for those people Sadhguru and the rest of us truly feel for and hope they get the treatment they need. But the rest of us, going down this road of medicating every little problem or every distressing thought we have will result in the decline of society.
Just like our bodies, our minds need to be exercised to become stronger and healthier. If we don't eat well and don't exercise, we get fat and develop numerous health complications because of it. If we don't brush our teeth we get cavities. The same is true for our minds. If we don't exercise our minds, eat well, or get our mental floss, our minds will become unhelathy, out of shape, and full of cavities. Sadhguru talks about this in many of his presentations. More and more young people aren't taught how to exercise their minds and as a result their minds become more and more unhealthy as they get older.

Sometimes I feel like the luckiest person alive,
other times I am very depressed. I find keeping
a stable mood for extended periods of time
difficult. I did meditation and realized not being
aware of your own thoughts and feelings leads
to this imbalance. Meaning, the clearer grasp we
have on reality, the closer to truth we are,
and the closer to truth we are, the happier we are.
This is why over indulgence in entertainment leads
to depressions because we are leaving ourselves.
If when you are bored you sit in silence and monitor
your own thoughts, you will be in a better frame of
mind than if you ended your boredom by watching tv
or a movie. Over stimulation secretes excessive amounts
of dopamine from our brains, so that when we stop having
so much secreted we fall to a very heavy depression. Limit
your stimulation, and focus on yourself. you will be happier.

I am not sure I agree with this. I have suffered from depression most of my life. Also most of my life I preferred to spend my evenings ruminating rather than watching tv or some other form of entertainment. I never felt any better from doing this.
These days rather than sit with my thoughts and ruminate I put on a film or watch tv. I am less depressed! I feel more connected with the world around me as I am connecting with others in a way by being part of the way society is.
I was causing my own depression by fixating on my problems rather than distracting myself from them.

Yeah I think this topic needs to be digged more deeper. It seems he is minimizing the effect of environment influences and how parents treat their children. Just like he said in his yoga centre environment is needed to be quiet and silence to provide inner engineering to people. And he has his own way of how to raise and provide to his daughter. What happens outside of us or to us does influence or help build what inside of us. For example how parents talk to their children will become how children talk to themselves. It is true that it's our responsibility to make our mental healthy, but there is also limitation and setback that keep us from building the healthy mental space. I used to know happiness and inner world is determined by myself too when I was younger, but after something happened I went unhappy too. It is our responsibility and it also can be influenced by outside world. My father and mother yelled everyday too.

One thing that I found very powerful in dealing with depression is, our surroundings be it people, places or other things.
I try to be with people that are happy and have positive attitude, who talk about positive aspects more in life.
I found out isolation is one big factor leads to sadness, volunteering helps and a sense of Belonging to something greater generates very powerful energy in us.
Overall, here are other things that helped me in my journey towards happier life:
    - Acceptance
    -Be around happy/positive people
    -ditch news/ politics
    -walks
-Anti inflammatory diet ( most of the time)
    -3-4 day exercise
    -vitamin D levels
-friendship over love ( So called Love 😂)
    -defining priorities
    -Gratitude
PS: I am still trying, inch by inch, life is a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard ✅😊

The end goal for assisting someone with Depression / Anxiety is to strive towards making them stronger and more self reliant, yes.
However...apathy towards their suffering serves nobody’s best interests. We are all here on earth to become the best possible versions of ourselves. But we do so in order to better reduce the suffering of others. Particularly our family, friends and neighbors. That’s the only worthwhile meaning to Life that I’ve found to be indisputable! That’s how we make a little Heaven on earth
