I think it was Epstein who did not want to be allowing his acts to be filmed, because I heard at the NME concert in 1966 they turned off the cameras when the Beatles came on
Also of note at these 64 shows was John’s New Rickenbacker 325 suffering a head stock break and so he received a brand new Rose Morris 1996 import model but he also used his brand new Sonic Blue Fender Stratocaster during the rehearsals
Very enjoyable Andrew. I worked with a lady that went to one of these shows, she brought her program in to show me and told me about the great time she had, this was back in the mid 80s. Hope she's still with us. Happy Christmas everyone!
I was aware of the radio Christmas "messages" from the Fab Four, but not these actual shows..... THANK YOU !! 🚬😎 And Jim Rodford, of the Mike Cotton Sound would later feature in the band Argent: Rodford was Rod Argent's cousin.
Fascinating as ever, Andrew - and hilarious too. Happy Christmas to you and thanks for all the videos this year - they seriously helped me through 107 days of Sydney Covid lockdown.
Another superb video Andrew. The Beatles’ Xmas shows are an often overlooked but fascinating insight to times gone by. I’m sure nobody would expect to see the biggest stars of 2021 appear in a quaint Xmas show. Cliff Richard & The Shadows were appearing in their take on the pantomime Aladdin that same Winter. Such shows featuring the leading artists of the day seem anachronistic now but were extremely popular back then. Unfortunately I was too young to see The Beatles live but a family friend travelled up from Bournemouth to see The Beatles ‘64 show. Many years later he told me that unsurprisingly the best part of the show was the Beatles ‘concert’ finale. Apparently they could hardly be heard though above the sound of screaming girls much to his annoyance as he wanted to enjoy listening to them!
Great video, I’ve never heard that interview before. Between that interview and the new Get Back film, it’s great seeing how even though they were all such forward thinkers, they were also very nostalgic and really lit up when they talked about their pasts. Even though your videos are generally always over 10 minutes it feels like they’re too short because you manage to fit so much information into a very tight and entertaining format. Per usual, excellent job and happy holidays!
There is a book by Lewisohn I believe that chronicles everything the Beatles did every day of their career. I'll have to dig it out and do a video on it, because The Beatles' working schedule was so unbelievable for those first 4 years that I don't understand how they did it. There were days where they would film A Hard Day's Night in the morning, go to the studio for a few hours after that, then travels miles to play a show in the evening. It was just insane. The fact that these Christmas shows went for 3 weeks had to be absolute torture for the boys.
The Hamburg days included gigging several times amounting to 7 hours of playing, and sleeping in pretty squalid conditions. I suspect they thought anything was better than factory jobs or mining. Also, the money was coming in - and records were selling!
Just got back home from a record fair and picked up this small collection of beatles fan club goodie really cheap. and then got home to a parlogram auctions video. BEST DAY EVER! 😂 Merry Christmas everyone!
Thanks Andrew, I enjoyed that video tremendously, interesting to hear The Beatles being themselves after their shows and their messages for their former partners in crime. Paul forgot to mention that Ivan Vaughan (who lived very near to John but went to school with Paul) was the one who introduced John and Paul to each other. The world has a lot to thank Ivan Vaughan for 🙏 R.I.P. Ivan Vaughan. Have a wonderful Christmas Andrew, stay safe this festive season and look forward to being entertained and educated by your videos in the New Year.
I have forgotten to watch this video… until now! What a wonderful video! I love all of the information you give us, this was a real nice deep dive! I will say that this was quite the perfect day: this video, a Beatles book and the let it be lp box set! Have a wonderful Christmas!
Never been a fan of pantomime, but this line up were good. Would have been nice if The Beatles had done a Christmas album, only did Christmas promos. I remember Freddie Garrity from the group and 'Little Big Time' 70's TV actress that was in this lives near me. Nice video.
And a Merry Christmas to you! Thanks especially for the gift here of the television fade away dot. Something I haven't seen in about 40 years or so. Just as I did in my childhood, I didn't turn away until it was all the way gone. Good memories.
Thanks again for another great video, Andrew. Again, a Beatles event I was aware of but not to this level of detail. It was good to hear the interview clips too.
Thanks Andrew. Wonderful video packed with great info, photos and now featuring actual audio of the Beatles. Happy Christmas and thanks again for all you bring to us via your channel.
Even though we don’t have the sketches because they weren’t filmed, at least we do have the Beatles Christmas messages that they recorded and distributed only to their fans and the fan club got the Beatles Christmas records. Have a merry Christmas Andrew, or as they say in England happy Christmas. Do you and to all of Polygram auctions and work there and to your family.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the Christmas video and the story on the ‘64 Christmas Show It was excellent and I loved every minute. Looking forward to more from yourself and Parlogram in 2022 and just wanted to wish you a very “happy Crimble” and new year!
Excellent! So glad you got to put some voices to this vignette! Well done…wonderful story and as usual you are Brilliant! Merry Christmas to you and your family n’friends. Happy Michaelmas!
Great video Andrew! It's awesome seeing your content! Also you're the first UA-camr to mention the rare and first Beatles' compilation called Beatles' hottest hits! I never heard any other beatles' collector bring that Danish album up before.
Fabulous little story Andrew and for once something I hardly anything about at all.You have given me lots of extra knowledge before but usually on things I already know a good amount about but this time all I knew of was the picture which as you said has been used for various single covers and other press but with no or vague details,so all of this is brand new to me which is very rare for me and hasnt happened to me for quite some years. To find a Beatles situation or event that is brand new to me is thrilling, and to actually here interviews and dedications from it,lovely.Excellant, different choice Andrew.Merry Christmas mate
Enjoyable, informative video. I'd learned of The Beatles' Christmas shows decades ago from a book of Beatles photos taken by Dezo Hoffman, which inlcude a Christmas show picture or two. I didn't know all the particulars, though. Thanks for sharing. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular (and longtime Beatles fan)
Thanks for another fascinating episode, Andrew. One small error: Patti didn't become George's wife until January 21, 1966. The wedding was in Epsom, where I happened to live at the time! BTW Mike Cotton and two other MCS members played with the Kinks in the '70s. Merry Christmas to all at Parlogram!😃
Have you ever covered or thought of covering the topic of Beatles 5.1 mixes? you could also throw in some of the 5.1 mixes of there solo material. Love your channel and your encyclopedic knowledge of the Beatles!
There was a lot here that I didn't know about, Andrew, so thanks again for another great video! Wishing you all the best for Christmas and the New Year!
Hi Andrew, thank you for another great video. That was very informative and entertaining. We need the Beatles music and humour even more to help us get through these difficult times. May you have a great Christmas and New Year.
Terrific video, I'd read about these shows, but this adds more of a "you are there" context. I sent the link to a friend who was at one of these shows, and he got a great nostalgic kick out of it (he was 12 and his older sister took him along). I've asked if I can share his comments, we shall see... At least we can get an idea of the Beatles doing panto from the Shakespeare sketch they did on Around thr Beatles, I'm sure it's on UA-cam somewhere.
@@Parlogram Here's what he said in his Facebook comment about this life-changing moment: "Mostly what I remember is bedlam and screaming. I do remember the Abominable Snowman sketch (Seeing it. Heard nothing but screaming). I remember the Yardbirds for sure, 'cause I really liked that band. And Sounds Incorporated, because their road manager lived in a pub that my friend's dad owned. He'd drive us around in the Transit van. That's another story, that involved Cilla Black and one of George Harrison's guitars. I have no memory whatsoever of Elkie Brooks, nor the comedian (what a mistake that was, putting him on the bill). But when the M.C. Jimmy Saville was on stage, and the only act left to play was The Beatles - well, the place was absolutely mad with excitement. And THEN the curtains opened. Never heard anything so loud in my life, to that point. Sheer bedlam, with deafening sound that resembled jet engines at take off."
Love that ghost of Christmas past! Very fun and very interesting video today. I am surprised the tickets did not cost way more to get into the Beatles Christmas special, between it being Christmas and how popular they were you would think they would have charged a lot more. Don't get me wrong, I am not losing any sleep over any of the Beatles not having enough money. LMAO. Has anybody ever been to a concert at that place, any band? Merry Christmas and a very rocking new year to all of the other diehard Beatles fans watching and reading! It was 20 years ago2day,Santa(put the kids toys in his sleigh🎄🌬☃️ Merry Christmas Andrew! Hope you get something nice for Boxing Day and hope you and your family enjoy a happy and safe holiday🎄🌬☃️
Another really interesting video Andrew.I know that when Cliff Richard and The Shadows did a "Cinderella" pantomime in the mid sixties that a cast soundtrack album was released on Colombia.Suprised EMI did'nt try the same with the Beatles Christmas show.Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Cheers Ian
Cliff & The Shadows did 2 Pantos (Cinderella and Aladdin) at the Palladium. I seem to think the Soundtrack albums were only sold at the theatre to the audience.
Absolutely fascinating to know about this, as the only time it really gets referenced is when Eric Clapton speaks about meeting The Beatles for the first time. Then it is hardly surprising that it gets airbrushed slightly when you consider the compere. It is just a shame that the then Maurice Cole was not known or would not become famous as Kenny Everett for a few more years. Strange it was not professionally recorded or filmed at the time, but then no one thought it would be of interest in the decades to come. Married, not until June 1966 for George Martin and January 1966 for George Harrison. Considering the double standards of the UK at the time they did manage to get away with that. Maybe make that triple standards in terms of the compere.
I'm not sure I'd say Magical Mystery Tour was a similar thing to these sketches. It has it's more panto moments, and it is possible that those costumes ended up with a panto company (no one knows what happened to them after the shop they rented them from closed down), but because of all the drugs they were on at time, it's much more twisted and dark. Maybe that's just me saying that as someone who had nightmares for years from that film as a child.
I know as the band make special records only for official fan club and in these records have interviews and message of Christmas. When the band over, these records today are very expensive for buying.Uchino of Japan.Merry Christmas Andrew.
I was a stagehand on that show. Two shows a night for three weeks, with matinees as well on Weds and Sats. I'd be the very last to defend Saville, but you are absolutely mistaken in saying that no-one liked him on the show. There was no hint of him taking advantage of the thousands of fans. Us stage hands used to go and lift weights with him in his dressing room between shows... and he would compete with big Mal, the Beatles roadie, on who was the strongest...Those were the days, my friend....
Andrew, another great Beatles video. I want to wish you a merry Christmas and a healthy and happy new year. I am looking forward to more videos in the new year.
This hole video is just Spot On:"). You know there just isn't that much about this or out there on DVD as well. But I do have the Programs that you did show throughout the video. I sure would love to have or see the whole thing come out on DVD of the 64 $65!!! Now that would be a great video that Appie could put out for Christmas:"). Sad it won't happen :(. Great clip of the Lads too!!! It would be great to get this on CD. I sure do hope that you have a safe and a Merry Christmas cheers mate!!!!!
Great work and very enjoyable! (But is that not what you always do (-: ?) A Merry Christmas to you, and looking forward to your new videos in the months to come! Stay safe and keep your head up during these precarious times.
Gosh Andrew! How do you remember all that? 🤣 Also, how is it possible no video survived from them performing the songs? There are videos from the mime sketch, right? Why not from the performance? 😕 Wish you all the best!! Merry Christmas to you! You've really touched me with your content and your nonstop knowledge! I first found your channel during last year's lockdown in Greece and it was just what I needed. A spark of light in the effects lockdown had on my psychology. Thank you!
I saw Freddie Garrity locally in Panto in 1980 and also saw The Cilla Black Show at Scarborough in Summer 1975 featuring a number of acts. I only remember seeing Freddie and the Panto Gang lining up in the foyer after the show. Which Panto it was is not remembered.
Michael Haslam's sister, Annie, reached progressive rock fame as the lead singer of the band Renaissance. Coincidentally, Renaissance was formed by the Yardbirds' Keith Relf and Jim McCarty when they left that band.
Thank you for this Video. I will understand Not everything, and I'm Not now about christmas Shows...really not... And I 'm a great fan .. I'm born in 1965... Christmas is over..but a happy new year, I wish you ,in these days , too. Lg from Germany, Ellen 👀💫😚
I th ought Ringo had his tonsils out earlier in the year, that's when Jimmy Nicol stepped in for part of the tour. I must have gotten my wires crossed somewhere. UPDATE: He was indeed hospitalized with tonsillitis at that time but didn't have them removed until the 2nd of December. So I was half right.
Anyone know which songs the Yardbirds played? ps Song publisher Ronnie Scott after seeing the Yardie's performance here suggested they record "For your Love". The rest as they say is History.
Marry Christmas Young Master Andrew! P.S. Say nice cheers to your kids, tell them you' re not boring, they'll understand as George Martins nine year old daughter Lucy, who asked where Beatles greater than Bay City Rollers, than they'll know your work.🌲☃️❄️ Fröliche Weihnachten!
One Thing to mention is that Freddie Garrity, of the Dreamers, stole the Beatles version of "If You Gotta Make of Somebody" from the Beatles own arrangement of the song after he visited the Cavern Club. It's my own theory, but Brian's Suicide stems from the night that he was at a drug store with Wilford Brimble, the guy who played Paul's Grandfather in "A Hard Day's Night" and an MI6 agent (Who's name excapes me, but Maggie Thatcher mentioned his name and all the liberals got angry with her). Jimmy Saville brought a couple of boys so they can have some kind of fun with them. The MI6 agent choked one to death. The last time I have heard about this guy is that he was in the building next door where Madeleine McCann disappeared, in Portugal. Brian was very distraught after the murder and he couldn't take it anymore. Goodbye for now and Merry Christmas.
The official reason for Jimmy Nicol replacing Ringo for 2 weeks in 1964 was Ringo’s tonsillitis, yet he had them out in December 2:15 and was hospitalised for 10 days (!)… the plot thickens
Another entertaining and interesting video, Andrew. Finding out new things about the Fabs I did not know before. Thank you for making Sunday mornings something to look forward to. Merry Christmas to you and family. Cheers!!
one thing the beatles did that surely helped their record sales was that nearly every year, from '63 on, they had new product for the christmas market. i think '66 and '69 were the only years they didn't have a christmas release. actually, the parlophone release of "a collection of beatles oldies" was intended to fill that void in 1966. just a side note - that jimmy savile sure ended up being a real a-hole didn't he? your channel is cool. you're just full of obscure beatle info, aren't you, my friend?
OK, I have to ask: what do you use to generate those very cool looking retro/analog titles in your videos? I’d love to use something similar on the home movies I create. Thanks!
Absolutely fascinating, I'd not known about this slice of Beatles history before. Mr Epstein worked those boys hard - at least they got Christmas day off! A Merry Christmas to you Andrew & to all of your viewers.
are u ever going to make a video when the james bond makers were joking about Beatles in the film, 1964 Goldfinger. maybe abit behind the story why the actually said that shitty thing about the lads from liverpool, whats the beatles thoughts about the ``funny comment``. It ended with Paul actually made a james bond song a few years later, wondering why he would after the goldfinger scene. Ringo married a bond girl, sean connery covered a beatles song. he probably loved beatles, so isnt his fault. its the makers behind the james bond. i assume its because the james bond frenchises were supposed to be aimed for older guys, and beatles were like a ``stupid`` teenage band
It's crazy how much the Beatles performed in these short years yet so little footage is available today.
I think it was Epstein who did not want to be allowing his acts to be filmed, because I heard at the NME concert in 1966 they turned off the cameras when the Beatles came on
1:34 I still love how many adverts at the time used studio photos
Love your videos Andrew. I will never understand how Saville was so popular, even before we discovered his true nonceness.
Also of note at these 64 shows was John’s New Rickenbacker 325 suffering a head stock break and so he received a brand new Rose Morris 1996 import model but he also used his brand new Sonic Blue Fender Stratocaster during the rehearsals

That old photographs of teenage Beatles are fascinating. Haven't seen many of them before.
I was aware of the radio Christmas "messages" from the Fab Four, but not these actual shows.....

I've been into the Beatles since I was a kid and know a lot about them, but I didn't even know they did this. Thanks for the info!

Thanks, you too!
So cool!
Michael Haslam's first disc was called "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself". Innocent times...
Cheers Brad - you too!!
Thank you.!!
Great work and very enjoyable! (But is that not what you always do (-: ?) A Merry Christmas to you, and looking forward to your new videos in the months to come! Stay safe and keep your head up during these precarious times.
Thanks, you too!
Thanks Andrew...fascinating!
Glad you enjoyed it, Mike.
@@Parlogram all your videos are informative and entertaining to this Beatlemaniac of 58 years! Keep up the great work Andrew! Happy Christmas 🎄
Gosh Andrew! How do you remember all that? 🤣 Also, how is it possible no video survived from them performing the songs? There are videos from the mime sketch, right? Why not from the performance? 😕
Wish you all the best!! Merry Christmas to you! You've really touched me with your content and your nonstop knowledge! I first found your channel during last year's lockdown in Greece and it was just what I needed. A spark of light in the effects lockdown had on my psychology. Thank you!
John was close to Pete Shotton on throughout some of his years as a Beatle, I believe John bought Pete his own supermarket that was his to own & run.
Shotton! The supermarket was in Hayling Island
@@sirronnitram8937 I thought I wrote Shotton but my autocorrect on my phone must have messed it up
I saw Freddie Garrity locally in Panto in 1980 and also saw The Cilla Black Show at Scarborough in Summer 1975 featuring a number of acts.
She also dated Roy Wood from The Move and ELO for a little while. I think he wrote some music and did the cover art for one of her solo records.
Fab vid TY!! (Patti wasn't his wife until 66...but I'm nit-picking there!)
Danny
Thanks Danny. Nit-picking noted and fixed.
Gary Crimble, and a very new year to you Andrew!
Thanks, wishing you the same too!
Great, fun vid!
Glad you enjoyed it, Carlo!
Merry Christmas, Andrew!
Thanks, Robbe. Same to you!
@@Parlogram Hi
@12:04 - That sounds like John in the background, not Ringo.
WTF???
The official reason for Jimmy Nicol replacing Ringo for 2 weeks in 1964 was Ringo’s tonsillitis, yet he had them out in December 2:15 and was hospitalised for 10 days (!)… the plot thickens
I wonder what became of George's friend, Paul ? :)
Love your stuff, Beatle matt 9091
Thanks Matt!
Another entertaining and interesting video, Andrew. Finding out new things about the Fabs I did not know before. Thank you for making Sunday mornings something to look forward to. Merry Christmas to you and family. Cheers!!
Cheers, Bob. The same to you and yours too!
Performer in the 1960s often had to do things that, by the 1970s, would be considered quite unsuitable for serious artists and their careers.
Is there a video on youtube of the interview?
I wonder if John had a passing interest in Sasquatch/Bigfoot/Yeti?
Clever scratch to Walrus....
one thing the beatles did that surely helped their record sales was that nearly every year, from '63 on, they had new product for the christmas market. i think '66 and '69 were the only years they didn't have a christmas release. actually, the parlophone release of "a collection of beatles oldies" was intended to fill that void in 1966.
just a side note - that jimmy savile sure ended up being a real a-hole didn't he? your channel is cool. you're just full of obscure beatle info, aren't you, my friend?
OK, I have to ask: what do you use to generate those very cool looking retro/analog titles in your videos? I’d love to use something similar on the home movies I create. Thanks!
And, of course, thank you for another extremely interesting and informative video. Required viewing for me every Sunday!
Someone else does them for me ;)
Absolutely fascinating, I'd not known about this slice of Beatles history before. Mr Epstein worked those boys hard - at least they got Christmas day off! A Merry Christmas to you Andrew & to all of your viewers.
Thanks Barry! The same to you and yours too.
Pattie wasn't a wife until 1966.
Noted and fixed.
Is this when George and Eric met?
I am shocked that Jimmy Savile was a part of it
I wonder if Jimmy Savile was already starting his creeper ways in the early 60s when he was emceeing shows with the Beatles?
Paul McCartney writes songs.
Eric Clapton was 19
are u ever going to make a video when the james bond makers were joking about Beatles in the film, 1964 Goldfinger. maybe abit behind the story why the actually said that shitty thing about the lads from liverpool, whats the beatles thoughts about the ``funny comment``.
Jimmy Saville was there? Yuck
